  • Dashcam power bank relay.
    www.ebay.co.uk/itm/116025882226
    Power your dashcam from a USB powerbank when parked.
    This device fits in line with the 5v power supply to your dashcam, the dashcam will power on and off using the car power as normal (power bank does not need to be fitted).
    When car power is removed, the relay will automatically switch over to power the dashcam from the power bank if fitted.
    This will allow you to easily film when the car is parked without draining your main car battery.
    If used in conjunction with a hardwire system (connection to car battery) this can be used as a backup battery. When the hardwire voltage cut off occurs and recording would normally stop, the relay will switch over to the power bank allowing for continuous recording.
    Easy connection using USB type A connectors.

    Really good idea, I already have a inverter in my car that is plugged into the lighter socket, so that only kicks in when engine is on I can then from there run a usb cable to a powerbank that i have for my laptop and hardly ever use so would be interesting to see if the powerbank can last a whole weekend because basicly my dash cam won't go into park mode and will stay on. but i can turn the screen off so that should help.

    If I buy this relay, which power bank would you suggest me to buy? I have cold winters and hot summers where I live in the US and I'm afraid of leaving a lithium battery pack in the car. However, I know there are specific power banks that can withstand extreme weather. Should I get one of those camping power banks that have the 12v usb outlets as well as the 5v?

    • @lowfinger
      @lowfinger  2 года назад +7

      If wired as in the video it is not connected to charge.
      As the relay isolates the power bank output it is possible to charge it while the dash cam is on car power with an additional 5v connection to the power bank charge port.
      However...
      Depending on the model of power bank you use, when the car turns off, the power bank stops charging and the relay switches to power the dash cam from the power bank, some power banks will not detect the load of the camera until a fixed time from the charge stopping so it may not power the camera, if you were to unplug the camera and plug it back in again it would then power from the power bank, on some power banks you can just press the charge indicator button and it will start to output in this condition.
      Also if the 5v power supply that is charging the power bank is a different 5v power supply to the one powering the camera this will increase the chance of the switch over working as desired (this is advisable also due to the load the power bank charge and camera would put on a single 5v supply.

    • @lowfinger
      @lowfinger  2 года назад +1

      The slow charging rate of LiIon means that even with long drives it is hard to keep the battery with enough charge so rotating two high capacity power banks is the best option. This is not as convenient as the dedicated products using fast charging LiFePo4 batteries but this is still much cheaper than those units.

    Does it charge the power bank when the car power is on?

    • @lowfinger
      @lowfinger  Год назад +1

      As the relay isolates the powerbank output it is possible to charge the powerbank when the relay has car power. However when the car powers off, the powerbank stops charging and the dashcam is connected to the powerbank output, the powerbank may not enable its output in this circumstance.

      @@lowfinger just plug it in and it should charge the power bank when the car is on since its not in use?

    • @lowfinger
      @lowfinger  2 года назад +2

      @@MadSilence the power bank will charge just as you describe, however when the car power is turned off and it stops charging, the power bank will not give power out to the dashcam as it will not detect the load. I have built a version that solves this problem. There are a few downsides, there is a 5 second break in recording, the charging rate of LiIon power banks is quite slow, you have to have a good quality high current 5v supply that is capable of powering the dashcam and charge the powerbank simultaneously. On balance I think it is best to run two power banks in rotation and charge externally. This is still cost effective and flexible against the capable but expensive all in one solutions.
