I don’t know man, dota 2 had a similar development cycle with an invite only beta and it’s player count never dropped like a rock. I think sadly in this day and age there won’t be another ’big game’, everyone already has a main game and they’re all bleeding players. Multiplayer as a whole is seemingly dying because of cheaters, sweats, microtransactions and overzealous moderation.
You might be right about there never being another 'big game' on the scale of stuff like Peak Halo 3/ COD4/MW2 / PUBG/Fortnite or even stuff like WoW or League. Valorant is possibly the closest, but I think it's a but presumptuous to put it the same category as the others, especially as it's similar to Deadlock - a mashup of genres. (TacFPS + Hero Shooter) People are hopping from game to game searching for that exact thing - the next 'it' game. Problem is, the industry is just rehashed versions of old ideas. There isn't anything new to play. Even Deadlock is fundamentally TF2 + Dota. Spectre Divide was CS/Val with a useless gimmick. Marvel Rivals is just Overwatch with a comic hero skin for normie "nerds". People have played the components before, and just mashing them together doesn't make the core ingredients taste any better. Innovation in gameplay is practically non-existent in mainstream games now. Until the gaming industry at large goes back to trying to take risks that lead to games that break the mould, this may just be how it's gonna be from now on. Everyone in the mainstream just hopping from new release to new release and not sticking to one game. The gaming space is now by default fragmented, and only gathers together for one massive phenomenon that DID take a risk every few years, if not longer now. I think on PC too there is an age/economy component - the players who arrived in the PC gaming boom in say, 2015 through to COVID are likely now into their late 20s/early 30s and not gaming much if at all. They'll try out a new game for a day or two at best and end up not being able to invest time into them, and just play their fave game on the weekend for a couple hours at best instead. Economy is all sorts of fucked up now too, so PC gaming is less and less attractive to newcomers, especially younger ones. Combine that with the past few years of AAA fuckups (and subsequent layoffs) and it's obvious we are living through the second gaming industry crash and have been for a year or two by now.
The game shouldnt have been as open as it was. the devs were pressured into opening up the game more, adding ranked, adding party queue, and it thinned out the player base to fast and soon. Im glad its one queue now so the scope of the game can stay narrow to make things easier for the devs.
20k concurrent players, down from 165k. i just spent 30 minutes to find a match and when it found a match, game bugged out like it does half the time and we had to wait 3 more minutes in-game waiting for the server to realize what all of us in the lobby already knew.
An early Valve video game playtest with no players becomes free to play for pretty much anyone with a steam account has considerable growth in the beginning. Later on (while still in playtest) some people leave it because it is unfinished. What a shocker.
it's really good to finally hear some logic from someone. People are going crazy over ranked changes bro you are playing a test game just fucking enjoy it.
you can't force people to enjoy something that they don't like just because the game isn't released yet. everyone is entitled to their opinions and feedback is literally the sole intention of even making the game playable. i haven't played much since the latest patch because i just don't enjoy the game in its current state. i accept that the game is unfinished and i've decided to take a step back from it and play other titles for now. there's nothing wrong with that and it's nonsensical of you to expect me or anyone else to ignore the game's issues just because it's in an unfinished state.
@@eebbaa5560 I am not talking about "that item is broken, that hero is too strong" feedbacks, I am talking about the crazy "fuck you valve I am playing hardcore in ranked and you just keep changing the rules did I waste my last month grinding" people. Even you not playing the game after a patch is a feedback to them to fix what went wrong so I totally agree with you about not forcing people to play an unenjoyable game.

Literally every competitive multiplayer game I played had this “dead game” narrative around the community. But most of them were games already released games, the fact this talk is happening during alpha just shows how many people care about this game
DOA they managed to kill it before it even released by removing ranked, matches are plagued with people intentionally feeding to get into lower matches ruin any balance the game once had then they locked every one out of hero labs again forcing them to play with these people that they refuse to ban for abusing the matchmaking system as it is game went from 7k people watching matches to 1k in 2 months do to piss poor management and changes being made that are "supposed" to make the game better
i wouldn't call deadlock dead or dying, but i will admit that i've steadily been losing interest in the game after playing it for 250 hours over the past two to three months. especially with the most recent patch, many of the balance and matchmaking decisions seem perplexing and contrived. i understand that the game hasn't been released yet, but i've taken a step back from it lately in favor of a more stable experience with other games. i do want this game to be successful, but i also can't blame anyone for getting tired of it at this point either. hopefully deadlock improves as it gets closer to a definitive launch state.
