I work for a tire company and you’re half right. We have say 2 different tire compounds but the same pattern on the tire. The lines help the computers tell the other computers where the tire should go in the plant. Or if we are hunting a tire that got lost in the plant. The little red dot and white lines on the side tell us where they are heading.
It also identifies the construction of the tyre carcass before moulding, to differentiate between a standard car tyre , a high performance tyre or a commercial tyre that may have the same size , but different construction /tread compounds etc
Tires have a few other things on them that are equally important. And that is the Date Code. The date code tells the consumer what year and month that tire was made. It is mandatory by the Federal government for any tire sold in America. So if you are getting some really amazingly cheap price on your tires, check the day code. Could be they are a few years old and they are trying to get rid of them out of their inventory... The date code is made up of four numbers. The first two indicate what week it was made, while the last two numbers are the year.
Before I was thinking that those lines can show early uneven wear of the tire if the geometry is not set correctly. Thank you for shining light on their true purpose.
There is one thing that you should pay attention to and that is the DOT number on the side. It tells you the month and year of manufacture. Don’t buy tyres that have had a Long shelf life. If it says 0924 they are brand new.
Has been working in tyre manufacturing for more than a decade and I can say the information is correct. The colour line is useless for consumer but useful for manufacturer and distributor. In modern tyre factory, colour line may not be a good choice as they comes with their set of problem as well during manufacturing process. Modern tyre building machine may opted out using colour line for quality control and tracking of the tread component and the tyre itself can be tracked by a tag and barcode/serial number that is stick to it. However, some distributor or rim assembler may request for colour line to ease their inventory management.
Fascinating video. I love this site. It gives me plenty of interesting and useful information without bogging down in technical minutiae. Well Done by all involved.
I thought they were just there to show that the tires hadn't been used yet.---- Wearing off the first time, so they couldn't be sold as NEW if driven even a little bit before.
My new bike’s tires had 2 yellow stripes on the outer sides each tire. Unfortunately I managed to remove 7 of the 8 stripes with one on the right front not yet removed. My only guess is I’m still not leaning the bike over far enough into corners. Have been riding on and off since the late 60s and this is the first time I’ve ever had a chicken strip.
There is also a rating for speed the tire can withstand. I see many drivers pulling trailers above the speed rating and wonde why the rire has a blow out or tire disintegration .
For anyone who can see this. I was looking at pics on an old SD card but before I inserted the card I turned off my WiFi on the device. I looked at the pics to see what they were and that was all. I didn't save any of them and I don't even have a photo app on my phone, I also have the google app disabled and yet somehow once I removed the card and turned WiFi back on and started watching yt I noticed that I was being recommended videos based on what was previously in the pics on that card. How is it possible since nothing was saved and device was offline while I had the card in. So apparently even when you disable the WiFi everything you are doing still gets recorded and used either for or against you anyway.
It is more about the raw tire ID before being vulcanized in the mold. There is no real purpose after it has been molded, all of the tire info is molded into the tire by then.
Chocolate makers use shape and “drip pattern” on the top of a chocolate so they will know what’s inside the chocolate. Now you know how to find the chocolate you want in your box of sees candies. Don’t worry, the drip pattern will disappear on the first bite!😂
In other words, the colored lines are a form of BAR CODE , for tires, colored lines can be stretched and deformed WITHOUT changing what the code says, as a BAR CODE CAN!!!?
Worked in dozens of factories both as an employee the as a contractor. Have to make it simple for workers who cannot read, do not give a sh**, or just plain dumb! On machines where we wired in a reverse push button had to paint it yellow so they would know red button is stop, black or green button is forward but they call it " Go button " like a traffic light. Eventually most of them could remember or read label that the Yellow button was reverse.
They tried colored tires in the 50s but they just weren't anywhere near as durable as black tires. The issue was that black tires absorb heat much better and allows the rubber to flex more easily with less cracking and crumbling.
You should drive a bit slower and carefully until the lines wear off, not due to the lines but due to the mold releasing agent wich as you can expect from what it does is very slippery.
The tread compound lasts longer than tires ever have. Having tall tread is dangerous after a certain point. There is a good reason why race tires get shaved down prior to use.
I can now die in peace knowing that life's greatest mystery has been solved. Thanks again.

The four number date code shows the week and year the tire was made. E.G. 3922 means the tire was made in the 39th week of the year 2022.

I just bought new tyres, was sad when the lines disappeared.
Coloured dot is to mark the high spot for installation of the tire so you can use less balancing weight
I just found this channel. I think it may be invaluable for those of us that question everyday things; such as why there is no channel one on a TV.

Very cool and very informative and interesting video…thank you for sharing ❤
One other very important indicator is the production date code. I never buy tires that are more than 6 months old.

From WC, so where do you mount the tire on a steel or alloy wheel using the colored dots?
Interesting. I figured they were to check alignment but also for roundness, but that was just a guess. Thanks for this video.
Used to manage tire stock. Knew the tire model in a stack by the stripes 😂
I have tires on my pickup truck that still have blue lines in the tread after three years and many miles of use????
Now I would watch them do the tyre balancing and make sure the lines don’t wobble. 😊

Appreciate the video on what I've wondered about. Thank you very much.
Thanks for the video , [ As they say / Every day is a school day ] .
Great video
Follow the lines You will NOT lose your way

I always thought they are there so that you know you are getting brand new tires.

The lines are the work of the tire police.
You can't say "colored" lines, they are African American lines.
Thank you!!!
Great 😃😃👍 video 😊😊😊 from Malaysia 🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾
There is a tread code and the line means that is the top of the tire. In other words this side up when it is placed in the curing mold.

It's very simple answer: colors is a secret codes for manufacturers.
In other words, the colored lines are a form of BAR CODE , for tires, colored lines can be stretched and deformed WITHOUT changing what the code says, as a BAR CODE CAN!!!?
I heard the wavy lines were best ?
Odd, mine has two black stripes also.
Unless you live next door to the tyre shop the lines will have been worn off by the time you get home

Lines of Color
Maybe you should be able to buy custom tyres with coloured rubber so you car stands out from the crowd?
They tried colored tires in the 50s but they just weren't anywhere near as durable as black tires. The issue was that black tires absorb heat much better and allows the rubber to flex more easily with less cracking and crumbling.
You can already
You see on spare tire
You should drive a bit slower and carefully until the lines wear off, not due to the lines but due to the mold releasing agent wich as you can expect from what it does is very slippery.
I only buy tyres because of the lines ...when there gone i replace
So why do some tyres have two different coloured lines ..?
Colored line dont care what ppl think
It's ridiculous how shallow the tread is on tires these days... You know they're screwing you

Stick a label on the new tire w/all explications about the manufacture secret.
Let’s hope the tires are built to last. Maypop Tires . May pop , may not .
Lets customers purchasing new tires know that the tires are in fact NeW
The most boring job I ever had was putting those lines on. 😅😅😅
just type the title into Google and save 9 minutes of your life
Sometimes these colored lines mean that it is a directional tire type!!
Boy was i way off, i thought they were showing the rainbow people of the world had a job making tires. Sorry, cough, not sorry 😂
You can't say colored any more.
First but certainly not last!!
are we running out of stuff to fill the internet with?
clearly I am not benefitting from all of this information as a customer...
Ghee how did I make it 74 years without giving a crap about the colored lines on tires? Thanks for the useless information.
Those Coloured Liones on Tyres are just to make themn feal new, just lyke the per-Fumes thay be putt into themn Týrés
There are no perfumes added to a tire. You need to educate yourself kid
Pride stripes😁✌️
Send them to work camp
