Absolutely not. Neither Shawn or Taker were the main draws for WWF in '97. Doesn't really matter either way because WCW could've thrown a trillion dollars at Taker and he still would've said no.

I was born in 93 so I barely remember the late 90s matches I barely even remember wcw so I was never really a fan of wcw! I remember some moments from 99 but 2000 was (looking back) the first year my fandom really started! I didn’t really know hbk or his antics from the 90s so once he returned to face HHH at Summerslam that was the first time seeing hbk and he quickly became one of my favorites! His work in the ring was some of the best throughout the early 2000s & his feud with HHH is easily in my top 5! Even after going back & seeing clips/reading about his antics in the past kinda sucked hearing but even still you can’t deny his in ring abilities!
In wrestling terminology, a "shoot" means something is real. Shoot interviews mean wrestlers can speak their minds, usually they do not have to be in character.
Shawn is one of those guys it's fashionable to hate on, but why? Bret let his pride get in the way of business, that's his problem. Shawn also made it quite clear he didn't like Bret at all so it's not like it was even a backstab.
People hate on him because everyone - from Shawn's best friends to Shawn himself - has acknowledged how much of a dick he was back then. Hell of a performer - easily among the greatest of all time - but a total prick and political gamer backstage.

It’s always amazed me how stupid people are. What screwjob??? Bret was leaving the company for the rival. What was Vince supposed to do? Let him walk out with it? Bret didn’t wanna drop the belt, Vince did what he had to do & so did Shawn. If anything in my eyes Bret is the asshole here if anyone is an asshole
Bret said he'd drop the belt to anyone else, he even said he'd drop it to Shawn the next night on Raw. Shawn certainly wouldn't have dropped the belt to Bret, were the situation reversed. In fact Shawn went home with the IC belt and no showed for a while, which is why the ladder match with Razor had two IC belts hanging.
Bret Hart is old-school wrestling royalty. His family was in the business for generations. He was truly a phenomenal wrestler. Bret was one of the biggest Superstars in the history of the business and Shawn contributed to publically burying him. Easy for HBK to get over it because he retained his paycheck at the company while Bret was excommunicated. Shawn Michaels will forever be a soulless snake.
It's a shame Bret couldn't have stayed. I would've loved to see him turn face again and get in a storyline where he and Shawn team up to battle against some bigger foe. OR BRET RETURNS AS THE HIGHER POWER! LOL
Who's the moron who thought it was a good idea to stand 4 water bottles in the middle of the frame of the main speaker on the stage. Great job! (The most sacastic 👏 ever!!)
The belt is a prop that WWF owned, and Brett Hart ascribed some asinine value to. When I quit my job, they aren't going to have to fight me for the laptop they gave me. WWF owned that belt. Brett was going to greener pastures. WCW was happy to let Brett play with their fake belts for a while. As a business, the WWF didn't need their prop being desecrated on a competition's live television show. That belt was not Brett's to keep. The fact that he got caught up in the fake value of that belt is of no concern to WWF. They took their toys back from the petulant child who didn't want to give them up as he was leaving. That's Brett's problem. Shawn deserved none of the heat he received. I would argue that it worked out for him in the long run, but he was the tool that got the job done, that's all.
I think it was more about respect than it was about the actual title. Also, in regards to the value of the title, I'm pretty sure being the champion comes with additional perks, eg payrise, higher exposure (which helps with merch sales), etc
Who are you even talking to? Oh, yourself. Brett is on the record ad nauseam saying he’d leave the belt with Vince when we left after Montreal as long as he went over and was able to walk away clean. It was about respect for all he had done for the company. He didn’t give a shit about the belt. It was about standards.
Yeah, Brett just didn't want to lose to Shaun in Montreal, he has said numerous times that he would have gone out on the Raw on Monday and left the belt in the ring. Raw was pre taped earlier in the day back then and WCW was live so he could have appeared on both if he opened Raw and then went and jumped on a jet to wherever
@@MadeofteaHow dumb would you have to be to think that it would be okay to NOT lose the championship on your way out the door to the RIVAL promotion? He kind of wasn't though. 94-97, Shawn's biggest years, were the lowest-earning years in WWE history. How much of that is Shawn's fault I don't know, I've always loved the guy myself, I just know that the "new generation" era is always cited by everyone as the most financially troubled of all WWE eras.
People only remember him hogging the World Heavyweight Championship (and the spotlight by proxy), and how he kept burying talents that challenged him for the title. Selective memory recall at its finest, cause people always forget that he did have a few good matches, and put over talent near the end (sadly, one of them cannot be mentioned any more after the events in 2007). But yeah, if you asked any WWE hater (especially AEW hardliner fans) what they think of Triple H, they would either say "too many rambling promos" or "championship hog".
@@kennycai8695 I tend not to focus on haters, they're a sad bunch and frankly they don't even matter. Lots of wrestler respect Triple H and agree he is a hall of famer and one of the best. I think he's MJF's favorite wrestler.

Growing up as a Bret mark and hating Shawn to see him come to Christ while Bret is whining to this day like an entitled teenager about how unfair everything is, HBK became a man and Bret got emotionally stunted about the screw job. It's as bad as Bret crying about WCW not having anything for him when he got to do long programs with Macho Man, Sting, went over on prime Goldberg, elevated Booker T and Benoit. He's just a miserable person.
The difference is with Bret his story never changes and he's actually entertaining in interviews. I listen to HBK and I have no idea what the hell he's talking about.
It's a shame Shawn spent his prime wasted on alcohol and drugs. That stuff just brings the worst out of people. It should have been the best time of his career and I would have loved to see the 3-match program that was originally intended between Hart and HBK which got scrapped after Shawn lost his smile. Shawn actually screwed himself not wrestling Hart at WM13 because Steve Austin stepped in as THE guy going forward after the double-turn at WM13 and really never looked back.

My standards for what make a great wrestler are personality, worker, technical skill. Shawn Micheal's had the personality, and the skill, but he wasn't a great worker. Hulk Hogan is one of the biggest stars and he was a shit worker and he was shit in the ring. Shawn Micheal's was one of the best overall wrestlers of all time even if he was an asshole.
Hbk trying to play the victim here doesn't really work with me. He was never single or alone for a minute. Between sunny and everyone else he had plenty of company not to mention being part of the most influential click in wrestling history. Not to mention that he was Vince's boy and could do no wrong and had a ton of support. And given the fact that he was the lowest drawing champion of all time at that time It's wild to think what he had to do to get there. I'm sure between all the drugs and the fact that he was tied in with Pat Patterson and who knows what else he had to do to stay on top that we haven't found out yet we will learn in due time. But HBK doesn't deserve to be on anybody's Mount Rushmore. The people who have him there don't know a lot about the inside part of the business. He nearly destroyed everything and the ramifications of his mark on the business are still being felt today. AEW is basically a very HBK friendly place if you know what I mean.
I always thought it was interesting how he pretends nothing happened with Sunny. Zero mention of her in his book, interviews, etc. He pretty much erased her from his life. I don’t blame him tbh. I think he’s embarrassed about it now.
Shawn can't help Bret is a whiny bitter baby. Bret Fart didn't win those belts, the wwf owned that belt and when the boss says drop HIS title, u drop it, especially when u r going to wcw to make even more money. Bret has a hitman pool table, thousands of pictures of himself in gimmick all over his hitman styled home to this day, dudes unbelievable and a mark to the core. Bitter baby Bret even has the belts in zipper suitcases and presents them nowadays "I won this belt" lol. Out of touch. Once 1996 hit, Bret fart was yesterdays news. Promos were boring and whatever company he was with would lose the battle, no coincidence. What I'm saying is, it didn't need to happen like it did. And WWE has done a phenomenal job of brainwashing ppl over the years into believing that narrative. Bret wasn't the kind of guy that would take the belt and leave. He wasn't a douchebag like that.

@King_JappyJoe I don't mind the topic but there's so many legendary matches, Montreal screwjob is a chapter in a novel of accomplishments and pitfalls.
Shawn botched a crescent kick to a jobber. Doink beat Bret on a house show. Luger had stiffed Brody in the cage, in the humidity of Florida. Tempers flared and THAT’S why Bruiser no sold, and THAT’S why Lawrence Luger ran away. Heenan was supposed to go over Warrior in an upset. A one shot deal, ala Genius/Hogan. The LOD vs The Powers was the classic. Bob Holly was a mark for his drop kick. And Bret was pissed with Hogan before SS93. Hulk promised the title shot, then nixed it at the last push. Yes sir. Yes indeed. Spivey/HHH where known to be stiff. They’d tag jobbers for real if they didn’t sell their offence properly. Vince ribbed Jim with the ‘WHO’ gimmick. Candido stiffed Horowitz when Barry used Chris’s finisher without calling it. Crush’s heel turn WAS best for business, looking back.
The Montreal Screwjob is the most misunderstood thing in the last 30 years in pro wrestling. It was Bret’s fault, he got exactly what he deserved, and Vince had to do it. It never would have happened, and Bret could have lived in peace, if he hadn’t been such a mark for himself. Asking Vince to risk Bret leaving with the belt is simply not reasonable, and that is what Bret asked him to risk. He got what he got because of that childish decision on his part.
Did Shawn Michaels deserve all the heat he got from the Montreal Screwjob? Let us know in the comments below!

Shawn the Goat
The goat at backstabbing
Crazy conundrum. Shawn is the greatest of all time on many levels and is still very underrated. HBK
What does shoots mean?
In wrestling terminology, a "shoot" means something is real. Shoot interviews mean wrestlers can speak their minds, usually they do not have to be in character.
And the opposite is “a work”, which is mutually agreed upon event/storyline/feud/ending of a match.
I can relate so much. I have the same chip on my shoulder that he had.

@@chillpengeruBret was supposed to put Austin over the next night on RAW. That was the original plan.

Bret Hart is old-school wrestling royalty. His family was in the business for generations. He was truly a phenomenal wrestler. Bret was one of the biggest Superstars in the history of the business and Shawn contributed to publically burying him. Can be hard.
You wrote a story and have no idea. Poor guy.
No one leaves as the champion, no one except Blaze of course, and we all know how that went.

Shawn Michaels was a draw. At the end of the day, that’s what matters most.
Triple H was the top heel during the Ruthless Agression. People forget how fun he was.
For who?

Dense comment
The Montreal Screwjob is the most misunderstood thing in the last 30 years in pro wrestling. It was Bret’s fault, he got exactly what he deserved, and Vince had to do it. It never would have happened, and Bret could have lived in peace, if he hadn’t been such a mark for himself. Asking Vince to risk Bret leaving with the belt is simply not reasonable, and that is what Bret asked him to risk. He got what he got because of that childish decision on his part.
