Lovely, hoping to have a chance to grow these when I get a greenhouse. I live in S. Florida, and it is not cool here. One day. Thank you for sharing.

Great video. Just subscribed. I'm picking up a Cheryl Shohan this weekend. I was thinking I might move it to the basement in the summer under artificial light. What are your thoughts on this and if you think it doable, what kind of light should I use (fluorescent, grow light, etc.)? Thanks and keep up the good work!

First, I'd like to say that Cheryl Shohan is an incredible bloomer when it gets to a decent size. Mine is now in a 4" pot and normally has 5 spikes all the time! Basement culture for Masdevallias and other cool growers is a good proposition. Be sure you have lots of air movement and also a fresh air exchange. Fluorescent shop lights are strong enough (2 2-bulb fixtures). Also, we now have LED and T5 fluorescents - both of which are more efficient but have a higher initial cost. Be careful that you are able to get a 10 - 15 degree temperature difference between day and night especially for cool growers. Here is a public webinar from the AOS: www.aos.org/orchids/webinars/public/growing-under-lights.aspx If I can be of further help please contact me.

Wade's Orchids thank you so much for the quick reply and the encouraging info about the Cheryl Shohan. I really appreciate your guidance about keeping it in the basement. I think that will be the only way I can get the temperature variation next summer. Cheers!

Wade thanks so much for your help. Can you give me some advice on Vandas? I went crazy and purchased 5 imports from a well known seller in Florida. I really love your very informative videos and just wondering if you have any on Vandas. These are supposed to be award winners front Bangkok. Any advice on Vandas? Or good videos to help me out. Hey, I'm getting a greenhouse built next week! I'm so excited to take my orchid passion to the next level!

Well, you're certainly on the right track with a greenhouse because they provide the light and humidity that they need to flourish. You have to realize that these plants have had a LOT of travelling lately and are a bit shocked. You need to do what is the essential part of orchid growing... You have to grow the roots! Don't worry about flowers at the moment. Give them a bit more shade than what they would normally like. Since they need their roots open you need to provide lots of humidity along with air movement. They will need to be watered every day - maybe more. Don't worry about fertilizer until you have active root growth. Also, warm days and cooler nights. Best of luck!!!

Wade how about fertilizing? I have a few of them and don't know how I should be fertilizing them I am using the double pot to keep them cool.

Masdevallias don't take a rest so the get fertilized all year. I'd use half strength of whatever you use.

What about fertilizer? I am a little afraid of using too much fertilizer which may be why I am not getting blooms. I have mine cool and humid.

+Karin Christensen Hi Karin. Sorry that I didn't mention fertilizer. I fertilize less in winter than when most of my plants are actively growing. For me, when I fertilize, it happens to all the plants in the greenhouse except those which need a winter rest. Having said that, the Masdies are very much in an active period in the winter. Ideally, they should get a complete fertilizer (with micronutrients) year around. It is MUCH more likely for a plant not to bloom because it needs more light. I have seen plants bloom without any fertilizer for 3 years or more. If you'd like to talk more about it, please send me a pm.
