    It is a hot hot hot day here today in July 2023 and I just watched your video that was so refreshing and cool. I purchased a Masdevallia in the Winter and it did well in the room I had it in with my Phalaenopsis orchids - no blooms, but lots of new leaves. It encouraged me to get two more of them. Then Summer hit and the Masdevallias went down hill. I had not anticipated the change of seasons doing this. I moved them to a cooler room, watered them more, and then started misting their leaves which honestly caused them to bounce back brieifly for about 3 days. Now they are back to struggling again. One died, one is losing it's leaves and one continues to get these strange brown/yellow spots all over the leaves. As I type this I gave up and put them in a plastic bag and put them in the refrigerator.....hoping for a miracle. It's so nice to see someone's collection of these beautiful orchids and who has the right set up for them.

      Sorry to hear you’re problems, I can only suggest that you hold off watering and find a cool room with decent light not direct sunlight they really are cool growers and the yellow leaves and leaves falling off are usually associated with overwatering “ which we’ve all done” at some point, so give them a good watering in the early morning and hold off the next day and water again on the third day so the plant has a short dry spell if they remain too wet they drop leaves hope everything gets sorted you could also check out the website there’s plenty of information on there www.micksmasdevallias.co.uk

    I've been done in the same way Mick, in regards to being sent the wrong plant. I even had the photo of the original plant for sale on eBay but when it bloomed after five months it was clearly a different variety. I did approach the seller but they weren't interested one little bit because so much time had passed. Very irritating. Great tour. Really enjoyed it.

      It's so frustrating having to depend on eBay sellers, I only have two other growers here in Nottingham so not much choice, but I do believe some sellers are aware of what they are doing because as you say by the time it blooms it's too late.

    That's a lovely display Mick, I love your Carol Tarlow. Masdevallia notosibirica has flowers with curly ends and it's one of Carol Tarlow's parents. It seems to impart that curl, along with its colour, quite strongly - I have two different hybrids with notosibirica as a parent and both have the pink and white flowers that curl on the ends.

    Great video Mick! How long did it take your Dracula spikes to elongate and open? Mine is taking forever. It’s been weeks and the 3 spikes are so still only ~2” long. I’m fully expecting them to blast any day.

    Lovely plants Mick and I love the flowers on the Inca Prince, for some bizarre reason I have never bought that. I too have Golden Monarch and I love it, but like you it only puts up one flower finishes and then puts up another one. Carol Tarlow always curls the top and if you look at some of the coccinea they do it as well. My Coccinea Dwarf Pink has flowered to-day and top is tightly curled. Will post pic on the group later. Never seen the like of Filaria Red, it is strange and a bit like one I have which stands up like that but no pouch at the front. It is so lovely, is it temperamental or does it grow ok? It reminds me of Masd saulii and Masd fuschii but the red is more striking. Our plants are getting so much more attention currently. Stay safe.

      @MicksMasdevalliaorchids  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Lynn, Filaria Red seems any easy grower I’ve only had it about a year as a small division just repotted it today and had a decent root growth, you have to admit massies are no long “ the poor mans orchid” as a friend of mine calls me in our club, looking forward to pics, the more the merrier.happy growing Lynn and stay safe.

    What temperatures do your roof vents open? Mine open at just 18 C which is too low for me really. I could buy special 'orchid' openers but it's yet more expense.

    • @MicksMasdevalliaorchids
      @MicksMasdevalliaorchids  4 года назад +1

      Geoff mine open at 25c you can set them by twisting the cartridge and the ring clip it’s not spot on but they usually open at that.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55 4 года назад

      @@MicksMasdevalliaorchids I had a bit of a 'tussle' with Rhino over these tubes because 18 is the highest that they'll start opening. Any adjustment just makes them open at even lower temperatures! Just shows - even expensive kit sometimes isn't the best. :(

    • @MicksMasdevalliaorchids
      @MicksMasdevalliaorchids  4 года назад +1

      Sometimes the best is not always what it’s made out to be mine we’re cheap off eBay and quite easy to fit and work that’s the main thing buddy, probably manufactured for overseas climate.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55 4 года назад

      Mick’s Masdevallia orchids yeah my old Elite greenhouse had more of a range in adjustability of the auto vent openers. These greenhouses are manufactured right here in the UK by an English company, so god only knows what they were thinking with these openers!

      Obviously not designed for orchid growers probably for the vegetable growers out there as we know at about 20c tomato plants keel over.

    Hi Mick. You really have a lovely collection and great to see them all 😊. I only have the one Masdevallia.... at the moment 😁 but I have a couple of questions if you would be so kind.
    I've had mine for nearly 2 months now and it's grown several new leaves in my care 😊. I repotted it in pure moss with some crocking at the bottom for drainage and it seems to like it. However, I don't keep anything else in moss and I'm a bit worried that it's taking too long to dry out. It's not soaking wet but is constantly moist, taking about 2 weeks before more water is needed... Is this OK please or should I mix moss with bark so it drys quicker?
    Also, how do I spot a flower spike as opposed to a new leaf? Is it really obvious or do they look the same until a certain point? I've loads of new growths springing up but not sure how to tell the difference until its obviously a leaf and disappointment sets in lol. Many thanks 😊.

    • @MicksMasdevalliaorchids
      @MicksMasdevalliaorchids  4 года назад +1

      Firstly Maxine thank you for spending your time watching my video, a lot of growers use sphagnum moss for all their Masdevallias, my greenhouse is quite damp and I could never get them dry, so I use a mix of small bark, perlite and moss this suits my conditions. your plant at present seems to be doing OK, so I would not change it just don't get over-enthusiastic when watering so long as it's moist it will do fine, you can even try a pipette just to give it a little drink. Flower spikes will come out from the sheaf of an existing leaf you will see it pushing upwards as the sheaf swells and widens. Hope this helps Maxine. Happy Growing.

      @maxineevans9179 4 года назад

      @@MicksMasdevalliaorchids Ah that's brilliant... Thank you 😊. I didn't realise they came out from an existing leaf so that's one to watch definitely 😊. A pipette is a great idea! Never thought of that and would be alot easier than drenching it each time lol. Many thanks Mick and loving your videos. Stay safe 😊

      @MicksMasdevalliaorchids  4 года назад +1

    • @j.d.8075
      @j.d.8075 4 года назад

      @@MicksMasdevalliaorchids It actually makes the trees feel a little more natural, to be honest. Living in tropical Aus, stuff, tends to grow on trees in the bush and the rainforest but "yard" trees seem to be kept sterile [free of these natural epiphytes], so many of my trees have Dendrobiums, Vandas, Brassovalas, Cattleyas and a couple of other genera growing on them now. And with them flowering at different times, you usually can find something in flower. My Vanda tricolor currently has two developing seed pods, which is exciting.
