    Thank you!
    Awesome video - it's right on spot for me :) You covered exactly what I was trying to figure out - I just got me my first terrestrial orchid, it's noID so i have no idea what it is, but it's not doing well and I'm thinking about repotting it. I've made a short video of it trying to get any advise on what to do with it, it has some weird brown spots that might or might not be some kind of rot, and the bud's not opening for 3 weeks; no luck ID-ing it yet but I'm not losing hope... I was told on orchid Nature's forums that it's either Phrag or Paph, I can't tell the difference but since both are terrestrial i should be ok to repot in your terrestrial mix.
    I also got 2 Zygos, both are ZNS Roquebrune x Acacallis Cianea, both are not doing well either, I broke one while trying to repot it after killing it's new growth and now I'm afraid I'll have to repot 2nd one as well. It's leaves are developing yellow spots at the tips and the roots that are poking out of the pot are all brown, almost root-burn kind of brown. I didnt know Zygos are terrestrials... I guess I should've put some sp.moss in the mix, I used the regular Phal mix from Loews...

      Marian, Paphs and Phrags may look similar but they take vastly different cultural methods. Also, they are semi terrestrial as well as the Zygopetalum group. Most Paphs as well as Zygos like moderate shade and even moisture (meaning the potting mix should be damp and never dry) whereas Phrags like bright light like Cattleyas and actually need to be wet! The leaves on Phrags should be smooth and light green. Hope that helps.

    Thanks Wade, that help a lot, I'm having such a hard time with Cymbidium. I just can't get it to bloom, not enough light and or cool temp. At least I know that my potting mix is pretty good.

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  8 лет назад +3

      Some are harder to bloom than others. If you summer your Cymbidium outside, when fall comes try wetting the entire plant down every evening. It will give it a more pronounced temperature drop and the Cymbidium will love it. Don't bring it in until temps are in the 30s at night.

    I just planted mine in cactus mix with extra pumice pearlite and orchid bark in a terracotta pot so hope it works. Found it in a garden centre planted in soggy soil I thought too airy of mixture might shock the roots. No clue what kind of cymbidium it is

    Good morning Wade this was a great video. I have a Phaiocalanthe Kryptonite Chariots of Fire orchid. Would that be considered a terrestrial or semi-terrestrial orchid. Thanks

  • @georghedin2353
    @georghedin2353 3 года назад

    Do you use the terrestrial mix for Stenoglottis longifolia? And could the more semi-terrestrial mix also work for S. longifolia? I have one but I'm afraid it is in a too water retentive soil (small bark, potting soil and pumice stones, although it seems very "dense").

    Great video Wade, i have been wanting to try cymbidiums, this info is of great help. did you say you sell this mix? or just the kiwi bark? thanks and please keep the videos coming, i have started on my green house, so finally all my orchids can move out of the house!

      +The Green Path Officially I'm just selling the bark but if you would like me to make some Cym. mix for you I think I could do that. The bark is arriving this week and I am considering selling smaller quantities. like 1 cu. ft., for those who want to mail order it. I really hate the price of some things but I guess "it is what it is". Send me an email at wadeh1954@gmail.com and we can determine what shipping prices, etc. are.

    Thanks Wade for the information. Does it mean that cymbidium won't flower if the climate is warm throughout the year?

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  8 лет назад +1

      +Jokha Mohamed Yes, at least in some cases. If you have a tropical climate you might do ok with those that are warmth tolerant. The only way to know is to ask if they are. One of the tricks is to water them every evening in the fall. If your winters have 70F (21C) nights that won't help much.

    Is Kiwi Bark and Orchiata the same thing, sold by two different brands? I heard one of my favorite nurseries is going to have Orchiata later in the Spring, and I'm looking forward to buying some, since everybody has been talking so much about it. One thing the nursery's owner told me is that the media dries pretty pretty fast, so it might be necessary to water the plants twice as much than with regular bark, at least in the beginning. Depending on the kind of orchid, this might be a good thing, if it's one of those that wants to dry fast. The kiwi bark lasts for years, but isn't it necessary to change the media still because of salt accumulations? I wonder how much salt we can remove from the pots by flushing them?

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  8 лет назад +2

      +Orchids & a Dutchy Kiwi Bark and Orchiata are made from the same material but processed differently. Still, they are a similar product when compared to other bark. Pinas radiata is the species of tree. It is harder than other bark and breaks down very slowly. I find I do need to water more often but I don't find that to be a problem. It is a very good media to grow orchids. I don't have problem with salt buildup. It helps that I have good quality water and my tds (total dissolved salts) when I fertilize is at about 250. The fact that the bark is hard means that it does not absorb as much salts. I think that combined with the additional waterings help to keep the salts from building up. I like Kiwi Bark the best, but Orchiata is also good. I think you'll like it.

      I have Zyg. Louisendorf. Zygos grow in straight sphagnum moss for me. As long as you don't overpot they should do very well.

    hi Wade... can you explain to me please your thoughts on besgrow orchiatra bark please as watching their videos on the method used for production and the reviews from orchid growers seems the best product
    here in Australia cym growers recommend to use bark /perlite only with a slow release fertiliser pellets ?? your thoughts please

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  6 лет назад

      Orchiata is a very good bark. It lasts longer than traditional fir bark. The only problem with it is that it is pH neutralized by the addition of lime which is leached out after about 6 months leaving the mix acidic. You may want to add a bit of lime as a top dressing a couple times a year or add ground up oyster shells to your mix if this creates a problem. You can test the pH by flushing a pot thoroughly and then run water through it the next day and catch it in a cup. Then use a pH test strip to determine the pH.

      conrad starks it might be just a bit large but try it. If it wicks up the water you’re good! I know it won’t hurt the plants because I’ve used it many times in the bottom of pots for ballast.

      I also used gravel.
      I used orchiata, spagnum mos, gravel and normal potting soil.
      My plan is, that its temporarily, because i had to repot my new cymbidium, because there was no soil left in the pot for hydration, and i don't have a good terrestrial mix yet.
      I can get a good cymbidium soil saterday.
      But quite a bit orchiata went in, and that is quite expensive.
      So if I can leave it that way, I'd rather leave it that way.
      Can he stay in this mix with ordinary potting soil?
      It is Cymbidium Sarah Jean "Ice Cascade"
