    I've finally been able to catch up with your invaluable video tutorials. I am cultivating about 3 - 4 terrestrial orchids: spathoglottis plicata, a host of reed stem epidendrum, arachnis (epidendrum?) and a couple more of whose names are not available. I am waiting for them to bloom to properly ID them. The media I use is my own compost, mixed with a little sand (we don't get perlite all the time here). So far my spathoglottis and epidendrums are doing well; for now they are in large pots with their future to be used as "barrier" landscape, and/or at the base of my two mango trees. I fertilise them with an aloe vera mixture, as they are still growing - in full sun. So far, so good - they are good, no problems at all, except to remove aged leaves.

      Hi Lyn 🥰💐 sand is a great added media to loosen up any soil mix! I add sand in my gloriosa lilies and some of rupicolous laelias I use it as a top dressing.. its good stuff! If there is no cactus mix available, then sand is the key ingredient to faciliate drainage 👍🏼 I am hoping to see one of the bletillas bloom in 2023. I have never seen bletilla blooms 😃 really appreciate your added information on alternative media mix. I hardly use perlite anymore. I used to when I was growing in organic media and still have some left from those years 😅 it is truly long lasting 😂 hope your day was fabulous!! Thank you so much for watching 😍🌸

    The iris reference is wonderful, especially so because of the relation of Orchidaceae and Iridaceae, both being members of Asparagales. Very strong synapomorphies in this gigantic monocot order.

      Stefan 🤩 hi! 💐 it has been a hot minute since I got to say hi to you!! Woohoo!! It is good to see you again 😃 I hope that you are doing well. And thank you so much for your feedback on the reference to the Iris in this video 👍🏼 👍🏼 I used to grow so many Iris in my garden, once upon a time! I could say that, I used to collect iris the way I collect orchids now. LOVE me my iris. Thank you for watching, Stefan!! So good to see you again 👍🏼👍🏼 hope the start of the new week was good to you 🥰🌸

    A very interesting and informative video Nina!! I don't have any terrestrial orchids, but a friend of mine has flowerbeds full of all the colors of bletilla, or commonly known as Chinese ground orchid. They look just like a super mini Cymbidium flower and only bloom in the spring, rest of the year they look like grass tuffs. All get early morning sun, and shade the rest of the day and since she has a pool nearby, lots of humidity. 😁
    Thanks Nina, and hope you had an awesome day... 🌴😎

      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +4

      Robert, hi 😍💐 oh.... to have the luxury of having flowerbeds of these orchids! I would do what your friend does... all the colors, and dec out my porch with potted ones 😂 Love the foliage on these, and note to self for 2023.... July August, they are going indoors to see if I can protect the leaves from drying out at the tips. 👍🏼 she has a pool?? I'll bring the beverages 🥳😅 I did have a good day, yes. Couldn't get everything done that I wanted to because my houseguest was leaving today, so the rhythm of the house was out of wack, but... I managed to get something done, which was a bonus. The rest of the week is to start a major cleaning operation, zone by zone, because I need to sort the dining room out for when the 'chiddos come inside from their summer camp. Xyliano will have to fly on his own for a couple of hours a day, because I cannot see myself sitting with my derriere supervising him when the week is chocka blocked with things that need to be done! Hope your day is going your way, Wingman, and that the rest of it continues to do so! Say hi to your friend... 😉😂😂😘 thank you for watching and your kind feedback ❤️

I was NOT expecting to see you here today, and yet... you watched 3 videos, thank you so much 🙏🏼 usually, when I come back from the eye doctor, I cannot look at any screen without irritating my eyes, so... seeing you here was a nice surprise 😘 I hope that you are able to have a good rest and that the drops do what they have to! 🌸

    Hey Nina, great video and tips! My bletillas are already turning brown as well! I grow them outside in a mixture of garden soil, peat and perlite and they do great :) They are also very hardy - in my region are very low winter temperatures (below zero) and all my 4 plants survived during the winter 😊 And the flowers are stunning! Very happy with bletillas ❤

      HI Mila 😍💐 I am so glad that you added the temperature tolerance for bletillas in the comments' section. I appreciate that very much. Seeing as I do not get to freezing temperatures (I hope I never get down to those) I cannot speak on the experience, so your information is great to add to the body of the video. I would love to have a garden and get the whole lot of them... I would also put them in containers on the porch 😅 thank you so much for watching, Mila! Hope your day was fabulous 🌸

      HI Anita 😍💐 good to see you again!! Hope that you are doing well 🤗 I am so glad that this video was helpful and thank YOU so much for letting me know. I have become used to some of the imperfections that orchids have in my collection. Be it, because my climate is too harsh, doesn't have humidity etc, but, as long as they bloom, and are healthy in other aspects, then I am ok with that. Bletillas look so beautiful when they are fresh and green in spring, but keeping that going is tough... no more scissors 👍🏼👍🏼 they are what they are and as long as they bloom... that is most important thing 🤗 thank you so much for watching, Anita! Have yourself a fabulous day 🌸

    Good evening Nina. You video comes just in time for me😃. Just today when arrived at home I looked at my Bletilla and saw the starting of brown leaves. I hoped it was because of autumn, which is now confirmed thanks to you video. She passed summer here in Fuerteventura very well in semihydro, potted in normal Seramis. Let's see how she will get through the cooler months. I'll hope for the best.🤞🏻
    Have a good start of the week! Morena

      Hi Morena 😍💐 good evening, although a day late! I am glad that the video confirmed your suspicions that the season had something to do with the browning of your leaves. 👍🏼 I assume that you have not had your's bloom yet? I am looking forward to year 3 and that 2023 will be the year that I get to see mine bloom. Thank YOU so much for watching and, have yourself a great week as well ❤️🌸

      Hi Nina. Nooo, no blooms yet. I bought my two plants only this year from a local garden centre. I have no idea when to expect them to bloom for the first time. So far I'm happy to keep them alive. 😂
      Have a good bank holiday tomorrow. 🌈

      I spent the day cleaning! Seeing as the electricity is cheapest on a bank holiday, I get to use the vaccum cleaner and do laundry during the day and not have to wait until midnight 🙌🏼 but... it was a good day. I am glad that I did not have to mess around with a broom. So... bring on spring 2023, and I hope both our bletillas will bloom then 🤞🏼👍🏼

    🦒❤️💁🙌 Hello neighbours 😄 The leaves of our Beltillas look a lot better than mine. Mine looked awful all through summer. At first I thought it was a fungus but then I realized it might be the sun but I wasn't sure and so it is good to know that you grew them in the shade and that the leaves like it better.. I don't have the heat and there's plenty of air flow. Humidity is not bad but the afternoon sun takes it's benefits all away. That's it, they are going in for a shady spot next year. Presently, like it happened last fall, new plantlets are starting to emerge. They seem to think it is spring 😉😂 but soon they will have to go back to sleep💤💤 Thanks for all the information, amiga mia. Have a lovely start to the week ❤️😍🤗

      FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good evening, meine liebe Freundin 🤩 the leaves stayed undamaged until mid July, at which time the warmth and dry air got a little too much. The tips started to brown, but other than that... happy days, and high expectations for 2023 🤞🏼 Unless I grow them indoors during July / August next year, this will be a reoccurring feature. I will have to remember to give that a go.... plenty of light indoors as well and if they bloom, then the blooming would have finished 🤷🏼‍♀️ I like orchids that loose their leaves for the right reasons 😂 oh goodness, your's is already sprouting again! Some kind of ambitious cluster, huh? I am looking forward to getting the albostriata in pot, and... am kinda toying with the idea to pot them all up into the same pot. If I can find something big and shallow, like I have for my myrmecophilas... actually... I have a huge white one that I bought back in the day when I thought I was going to repot Cousin Itt...mmmhhh, I may need to get that out of the shed and see if I will do a community pot. 😃 it was a good day today, somewhat detached from the norm, but a good day. Tomorrow I start to clean areas as and when I can and then it is time to move the chairs back up into the spare room. Prep the dining area for the incoming cold weather, but, for now... it was another nice day outside. I hope that you had yourself a nice day as well, amiga mia! ❤️ thank you so much for watching. Have a lovely rest of your evening 😘🌸

    Those brown tips are commonplace if you try to grow Bletilla this far south, they just don't like the constant high day and night temps for months on end. The Spathoglottis love the heat, but they do like a little shadier location. They get weak in full sun but with some afternoon shade they grow big quite quickly, but it does reduce the amount of blooms so it is a trade off. On the plus side, they stand up to a hurricane pretty well.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +3

      Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! I have accepted any browning for what it is, as long as it is not because I made the mistake of exposing orchids to direct sun for them to burn. That annoys me. Climatic issues... can't change that, and I have to accept what happens... hakuna matata. Good to hear that spathoglottis are tolerant in hurricane conditions... wow! 🤪 thank you for watching, amigo!! Hope your day is already off to a great start and wishing that it stays that way ❤️🌸

    Thank u for thus video. U have put my mind to rest. I hate the brown spots but I now understand what is happening. I had taken to giving the leaves a haircut removing the brown parts.
    There is an unusual occurrence with my mini dendrobium ID Dan. New Hope Mini. It spiked and while spiking, it sent up a new bud. The bud died it became water soaked during hurricane Ian. Later, the plant spouted a new bud AND a new spike in the same place where the current spike is. Alas, a few days later, the bud disappeared but the new spike is growing vigorously. Is my plant in danger?

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +4

      HI Debbie 🥰💐 I am glad that this video put your mind at rest! Thank you so very much for letting me know, I appreciate the feedback 🙏🏼 I never cut any brown tips back, even if it happens during the season. I would recommend not to cut them, because if it is an environmental issue, as in my case my climate being too dry, then eventually, the area that was cut, being at the edge, will go brown... so, that would then mean to cut that part off again. Eventually, there is not much of a leaf left. If it is an environmental issue, as in my case, the brown tips will eventually stop and then just be brown. Just a thought 😃 there is nothing wrong with your beautiful dendrobium. Hybrids like these will produce a spike from the same area that they already had grown a spike and the older the orchid gets, the more it will do that, making for an amazing bloom show as the orchid matures. These hybrids are bred to bloom... and they have done that successfully, so... I am happy to hear that you have another spike growing vigorously, after the unfortunate damage caused by Ian with the first spike. I can almost state that, the orchid would have grown another spike at that point, even if the first one did bloom. A beautiful orchid that just wants to please 😍😍 nice! Thank you so much for watching, Debbie!! ❤️🌸

      🌸🥷🏼Kris San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 hi! I have been checking daily on the site itself, since my gmail notifications had some issues, which started mid September (methinks it is resolved by now, because I have since received form notifications in my email). I did not receive anything from you, no 🫣 if you sent yourself a copy of the form, as is possible, please could you send it to me by email to save time? I am so sorry... I will be on the lookout to see what comes through. I am working for another 3 hrs,... just in case you don't have time before I shut down. Or, if you send it after that time and don't hear anything from me, then know that I will look for you in my email or go straight to the submission page. Hi Ann 😍💐 Have you changed your name? I am not trying to be nosey, but I have not seen a viewer named Ann D. for a very very long time, and if that is you, but you have added to your name, then it is so good to see you and I hope that you are doing well 🫶🏼 if it just so happens to be a coincidence, and it is your first time here, WELCOME! A warm warm welcome and a big thank you for being here, for watching and your comment / question! Your ground orchid should do really well east facing in your climate, yes! With vandas growing well there, that is a signal for excellent light conditions which this orchid loves. Your humidity will also buffer against the drying out of the leaf tips prematurely! 👍🏼 I hope that you are having a great day in beautiful FL! 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      Hello numbat 🤩💐 welcome! First of all, a warm warm welcome and thank you for being here and for taking the time to watch my video, provide feedback with your comment. I appreciate it. I went to your account to learn how to do better videos, seeing as your comment was giving me constructive criticism, but I do not see any videos on your channel, so...🤷🏼‍♀️ while some videos of mine have a lot more hands on visuals, some are a just information, which result in less hands on visuals. You came across one of those with no hands on visuals. I also provide content for subscribers on my channel that have visual impairments, and it is videos like these that help them not feel as though they are missing out! I hope that the information provided, however, was helpful to you. Just a head's up on my content in general, some videos are longer than 20 minutes, and I do a lot of talking on those as well. I would not know how to otherwise convey the information. By written text? That would exclude the visually impaired subscribers and that is not my modus operandi! Any suggestions on improving a video that is in actual fact visual.... to be more visual, is greatly appreciated! Thank you! I hope you are having a fabulous day 🫶🏼 and once again, welcome! 🌸
