      Don’t quote me but at 5:30 I believe you only need a 1099 if you make over $600. Maybe they send the form anyways, but you don’t need to log it unless it’s over $600. My dad is an accountant and told me if I didn’t make over that then I didn’t need to include it in my taxes. Again though, don’t quote me because I might need misunderstanding your point.

    • @SarahLarson

      @@TaylorHaselton Thanks for pointing that out!! I know they’ll send you a 1099 if it’s over $10 and you’re a US resident, but I’ve also read that if your business doesn’t make over $400, then you don’t need to worry about taxes. But maybe it’s more specifically $600? Not positive, but either way, doesn’t hurt to include it in your taxes! Somewhat depends on what people are most comfortable with. :)

    Hi Sarah,
    I've been watching some of your videos and have found them to be so helpful! I don't know if you've answered this question before, but I'm just curious ... do we have to collect and pay sales taxes or does Amazon KDP do that for us? Good day to you, Sarah! In the sea of click baiting videos to earn big sums on KDP, you are a gem. No one is talking about real hard stuff like taxes. I am non US resident, and just found out how to make that 30% tax withholding go away. So, from what I have learned, Amazon is taking 30% from all KDP earnings, and I gotta pay taxes to US on that rest of 70%? What percentage are they taking away, yearly or quartaly? Also, my native country is taking 45% from what is left... So, I am trying to decide whether to go in this advanture. I dont know anything about paying taxes, how to write accounting book. For whole my life I am dreaded of paper works of official institutions (goes naturally in my country). So this is a big hurdle for me. Please, help if you can. Thank you so much! Best regards. • @SarahLarson
      @SarahLarson  Год назад

      Hi, Snezana! Thanks a million for your support! I really appreciate it. First off, I'd like to preface this by mentioning I'm no tax expert, especially for other countries! I've got a decent idea of how things work in the US, but I can't say for other locations. However, I am pretty sure that KDP doesn't withhold any of your earnings for tax purposes. You'll receive your full royalty, which you'll be personally responsible for paying taxes on. Either way, definitely give KDP a try! For me personally, I pay about 15% for taxes on anything related to my business income, including KDP, which still leaves me with plenty. But make sure you understand the laws, especially if you exceed that minimum amount. Sorry I can't provide you with the most specific information, but I hope that helps you get on the right path! Wishing you all the best!

    What kind of expenses are you talking about? So far, I have published 3 journals/sketchbooks (1 sale) and 1 coloring book (no sales) on KDP using Canva, so the cost of Canva would be an expense, right?

    • @SarahLarson

      Great question! Yes, if you have the Canva subscription, that would certainly be an expense. Other possible expenses include other subscription and software services, such as Book Bolt, Helium 10, and InDesign. Or if you commissioned someone on Fiverr to design a book for you or you purchased templates on Etsy, those would also be expenses. Ultimately, whatever you use to sell your books! :)

    Thanks so much for this video!! If you don't mind, I have a question... When filling in my tax information, I'm assuming I should click "individual" since I'm just one person who's selling and doesn't technically own a business or anything. But... It says "individual" includes "Sole Proprietors or Single-Member LLCs where the owner is an individual." I looked into that a bit, and if I understand correctly, a single member LLC just reports all income on their own individual tax return as if the LLC doesn't exist. S O l ol, that would mean I don't need to go in and do any formal paperwork to create a business if I wanna sell through KDP, right? Lemme know if that's at all confusing; my main concern is I just want to know I don't need to go in and get some tax business ID number and all that, at least not yet. (You mentioned in your video how after a certain amount you gotta figure that stuff out since you'd be making a significant quantity of money, but that's not really a concern for me as of right now since I just wanna try doing some low content book selling and see how it goes heh.) Thanks again !! 🌱

    • @SarahLarson

      Social security is probably better! But again, it depends on where you're at in terms of your sales. If they're low enough, you may not even technically need to report them on your taxes. An LLC is really only important for protecting yourself from liabilities, and given there are few when selling through KDP (at least to my knowledge), it's not a necessity for most people. :) Hope that helps! I just operate under a sole proprietorship and probably will continue to do so for a good long time; it makes things easier legally, in my opinion. :)
