If it doesn't at least get nominated on its technical merit alone. Then we will pretty know where the academy stands on our industry. Personally I think it's about damn time. SFX artists get the respect they deserve.
As much as I agree, I think Any Serkis proved that the Oscars don’t nominate mocap roles
Shanker R Pretty sure it would get a Nomination for Best Visual Effects next year, but it most likely not get one for Rosa Salazar as Best Actress. She will have her time, just not now.
Maybe if Disney buys out Fox, until then Disney will keep paying "Critics" to shit on anything non Disney and Oscar nominations will be a definite not happening. Oscars aren't won on Merit they are won on political stand points.

That is why so many people are watching it so much besides the action.
I wish I had an iMax near me, the Sydney ones shut for upgrading until late 2020. The next closest is Melbourne and I'm not traveling that far just for a movie.

@@xynystervolt I've seen the movie. Just when I looked up a time to go see it at the Sydney iMax I found out it was closed for rebuilding a bigger more up to date cinema. It hadn't had any major upgrade since 1999 when it first opened. Only other iMax is in Melbourne (1000Km/620miles away), it's a good movie but not that keen.
Rosa did a great job.
Might sound weird, but even Rosa's voice sounds exactly as Alita in my mind, even though the OVA has a high pitch younger girl voice. The casting for this movie is beyond perfect.

I don't know why but I feel so moved, emotional and attached with this film. Perhaps because I've been waiting 20 years for it to be made. And the fact that they have done such an amazing job doing it. Beyond expectation, even. I can't wait for part 2 and part 3, and then collect them all in the best resolution possible.

Not trying to be cliche here but this movie actually helped me in life. I used to join martial arts class when i was little and i always take it for granted. Eventually, i quit because it was "boring" when in real life, i wasnt even paying attention.Years later, in 2019, after watching Alita: Battle Angel, i was just so inspired to be a badass like her. So, .................................... i signed myself up for a martial arts class (not karate or taekwondo. Something far more superior than that). What i'm trying to say is, this movie BROUGHT MY PASSION OF FIGHTING BACK TO ME. Currently trying to restart life again. I dont wanna be a timid and small teenage girl anymore who gets picked on by friends and families, calling me "short"

Its funny because I was a former wrestler and one of my favorite woman mixed martial artist named Rose Namajunas pulled off this huge upset to win the UFC championship and that really inspired me to start training again just so I can be in good shape. The thing is I knew Alita would be good movie going in but it was a great movie. One of the big things was Alita reminded me of Rose Namajunas the way she can have tears one moment and be a complete bad ass the next. Also they both have a certain lovable awkwardness about them. So Alita has also inspired me a lot.

I watched it and fell in love with alita, please try this movie first, then you decide you like it or not. I personally WANT A SEQUEL, so if you love this movie too, help spread the word, though it's not perfect, but it's a great movie, alita deserve more love!

One of the most memorable sci-fi movies I’ve seen in a long time.
This WAS an anime come to life. It's a film that gets the source material right but respects it too. Truely an amazing film! I really hope they move forward with a sequel.

OMG. Rosa's response at the wrap scene brought some tears to my eyes too. She is just so genuine, so relatable, so sincere that you cannot help but connect with her performance. I doubt that the Academy will recognize her, and it will be another travesty of justice when they don't. This movie would have been good without her, but with her it was great. In the words of Kishiro-san, she IS Alita.
Great movie, saw it 8 times, first time ever I've seen a movie more than once and I'm not a regular moviegoer 😱 I love Rosa's Alita and the crew that put these two together gets my full admiration ❤

I have seen the movie twice and i loved it very much. I'm also a big fan of the soundtrack but i noticed that the movie has a lot of unreleased scores. Does anyone know if theres a chance that they will release them at some point in the future? Please i want to know!
I wonder how they recorded the motorball scene (i mean on the stadium)
CG doubles being animated frame by frame. Maybe some perf-cap for close-ups and roller-skating movement references but it wouldn't surprise me if 99% of the motorball sequences were full CG animation as the camera makes a lot of quick impossible moves in one single take/shot.
I saw one interview that there was a real stadium during the shoot and yah know they enhanced it to look more Alita Battle Angel vibes
It took them 3yrs to develop the motorball scene.
Actually, they put Rosa and all the actors in a mocap suit in an empty hangar. Then Katie Ketchum, a professional rollerblade champion and acrobat did all the actual skating while Rosa was off to the side doing all the facial expressions for the close-up shots while pretending to do the same movements. They combined Rosa's facial performance with Katie's rollerblade performance. The stadium is CG and the crowd is made of few extras on green screen being duplicated to fill it.

Watched it 2 weeks ago and second time today with my 16 year old son! It's the first time he didn't reach out for his iPhone from beginning to end and he said it was the best CGI film he has ever seen! I hope they will come out with a sequel!

Sorry for the long post but here's my take. :)
Motion capture has been around for a while but nothing quite on this scale. There's only one other film I've seen that comes close to this. L.O.R.D. which was a Chinese film was actually quite amazing.
Battle Angel however is on a completely new level here. CG SFX I think has lost some of its cool factor over the last few years. Maybe because of Marvel's overuse of it. Animation certainly has as well such as with Pixar.
I mean don't get me wrong I love Pixar. But they really haven't pushed the envelope that much. As an animator this is a bit disheartening. Because you really feel that all your hard work is for not.
Especially when the academy itself. Seems to only have it in there to fill a time slot. I don't really think they consider animation as a legitimate art form. That I like to see change.
However BA within about the first 10 minutes. I kind of forgot that she was actually a CG character. It almost reminded me a bit of the navi from Avatar.
But actually maybe just a little bit better. Uncanny valley was nearly non-existent and frankly I had a pretty big smile on my face. Didn't quite understand the eyes at first but now kinda do.
Anytime you can take actors & put them within the CG space. Along with other actors interacting within that space. That is a benefit of the entire production. Rosa Salazar's performance was outstanding of coarse which helps! :b

I have the OVA and manga first volume. I just finished watching the new movie. Loved it. I could write an essay why I enjoyed it, but it can all be summed up with, “Loved it.”
Alita is EPIC ...THE NEXT ONES NEED TO COME OUT...ITS A STORY YOU ARE SUCKED INTO...AND REALLY SAD FOR LOSE OF HUGO...WE HAVE WATCHED 60 PLUS TIMES NOW

The story behind alita explained by James Cameron on DVD is awesome and very cool the original manga creator loves I and that it was adapted to live action, the creator of alita wanted to make a live action film but wasn't able to do so in Japan at the time
