RV Black Tank Valve Will Not Close - I fixed it!

  • I dumped my black tank and the next thing I knew I couldn't get it to close. If this happens to you there is a good chance you might have tissue blocking the valve. This is the simplest fix. All you do is flush your tank really well. Hopefully, you have the Rhino Blaster Pro which I have listed below. If this doesn't fix your issue then you might have something blocking the valve which is what happened to me.
Below I've listed some of the tools that are very helpful in using your black tank and fixing it.

    Sewer Hose: amzn.to/2REhKkN
    Flex bit holder: amzn.to/2X1LSaV

Here's a little tip for when you have to remove or do this kind of work on the sewer system. Obviously, drain your tanks best you can. Then, use your stabalizers and tip your camper, the opposite way, so that fluids don't want to flow out of the pipe.

Suggestion, always put silicone plumbers grease on any seals like the rubber rings. Never use vaseline - it causes the rubber to swell. Use a clean q tip to get some grease from the container. Not your sewage covered hands.

Good advice. Cuz, I watched one video the guy saying to Vaseline to lubricant it.

This is a tremendous video. No fluff. Just great facts and detail. I have a Winnebago View and the valve is behind a wall. That should make it more complicated. Thank you for the great video.

Same problem, hard stop trying to close. I thought the gate valve came out of the groove. Fix is next. Thanks for putting this up,it saves s lot of grief for many of us new to this.

Have seen tours of manufacturers where they're doing the tanks installation. Hole saws making openings for toilets, drains etc, NONE of the waste plugs are bothered with if they fall into the tank. So sooner or later you wind up with your situation, a big chunk of scrap that fell off somewhere during assembly.

Thanks for making this video. Just got a travel trailer and mine is hanging open about 1/2 inch. Didn't know if that was normal or if that was a problem. Yikes, I might have to look into this before using this black tank.

If the bolts are shoulder bolts, then they can be tightened up. If not, they were not torqued down so valve would work freely.

Very good video. We've been RVing for over 25 years so have done the valve thing, but this time replacing the black and gray tank valves with electric ones. It's a little more taxing since it's a fifth wheel and have to drop the chlorplast corrugated stuff to access the tanks. I decided on electric valves because of recommendations of others. It's really a pain to access these valves, not difficult, just a pain.
I don't do gloves. Comes from my farm days. That's what soap is for.

So, on the way from working on the black tank valves to clean your hands, you touch the tools, the bins, the hatches, the door handle, the sink, the taps, the soap..... contaminating every one of those items for the next unsuspecting soul that comes along. Do your friends and family a favor, and wear gloves when messing around with this stuff.

that rhino flusher is the best because it stops the water from coming out so you can deep rinse , the gate is the trick on this . Some rinsers do not have the valve gate.

Yeh, mine is doing the exact same thing, I don't want to touch it because it's only 2 months old...still under warranty, so I have wait for a tech to call me back and go from there, otherwise I would have already had it fixed by now. Great job though.

Easier if you put the seals in place on the pipes first then put the valve it. Great video

You own a rv long enough...you WILL have to mess with or replace valves eventually. Not the most enjoyable thing but good to know how to do.

Not surprised with the zero quality control from the manufacturers. Pulled both of mine apart today (1.5 & 3"). Both were leaking after 9 years. Cleaned everything up but I had to take things apart a good five times because if the black rubber seals don't perfected seat into the grooves in the valve and both flanges on either side the valve will leak from the bottom or when closed it still leaks. Next time I'll just buy a completely new valve which has to be easier.

That valve design really needs a rethink. Typically wet wipes are more the problem than paper, being heavier they dont dissolve like paper will.
Good job getting an unenviable task done.

I think that happens with every new rig. Our last brand new travel trailer had that same issue. it was a plastic disc. You would think they would make sure the tanks are clear of debris, but I guess not. This is a very common issue... Glad you didn't get anything in your mouth😳. Nice video!

Should have lubed it first. For not only installation, but also for workability. Train your wife to do these menial tasks and pay her less.
