Hello! New to RC here and I was wondering if a slash would be a good car for starters who would drive it on Asphalt. If not, what other cars would be a good choice?
If I were to do it over again, I’d start with Arrmas as the value is better for the quality of RC you get. If you’ll just be on the street, I’d recommend an Infraction 3S, but if you wanna hit some jumps and street bash, the Vorteks is pretty nice too. They also make some models that are upgradable as your skills advance and as you progress in the hobby. The upfront cost of those models are cheap, and you can upgrade them to be more advanced later for a good price too.
Idk if the arms are neccessary because they are similar to the 2wd ones, but I've put the hubs and driveshafts from the 4x4 on a 2wd Slash and it worked well for brushed power.
I fear lipos. I normally drive crawlers with nimh batteries (I know some out there will laugh about it). Nevertheless, the slash is growing on me, and I'm thinking of buying two, and considering buying the recommended lipos you mentioned. My question is, how much run time do you get out of each lipo?
So lipos are only dangerous, If you don’t use them right. The easiest ones to use for a slash are the Traxxas ones, as they have safety features. I have a video explaining lipos in great detail. Runtime depends on driving style could be 20 to half an hour of run time.
No the 3000mAh NiMH battery will last a few years at least, but it has less runtime than a 2S LiPo, and loses power throughout the run. With LiPos, the speed is constant the whole time and when the battery dies, it cuts almost all power from the battery.
In my experience the only thing that you need to upgrade is the shock caps. Tires work fine, non lipo will be good for a year or so, don’t get lcg chassis if you jump it a lot, and don’t upgrade the shafts if have a brushed model, they don’t have enough power to break themselves, save your money and get a metal spur gear.
Shock caps are the biggest one for sure! In our opinion the tires are bad. We used them for a year when we got our first Slash and once we got Badlands we didn't realize how much they would change the characteristics of the truck. The LCG chassis for us is a must-do because we like to go fast, and the stock chassis isn't great for that. You can get buy with the plastic shafts on the brushed model but once we stepped up to 2S we broke them more frequently. Although the metal spur is more durable, we like to keep ours plastic because on a hard impact it will strip instead of ruining an expensive metal part. Thanks for watching!

I would get the Traxxas 2S 5800mAh and one of there chargers. I'm assuming that you're somewhat new to the hobby? If so, I would definitely recommend that setup. Works great and is simple.
I don't have a Slash with the stock driveshafts anymore, and I'm getting ready to sell my Stampede 2wd which is the same process. It's very simple though. Yes, you can run a 2s lipo just fine, you will need a new charger, Do not use the charger that you charge your nimh batteries with, that could/will result in a fire with lipos. And make sure you set the ESC to lipo mode, you can't run lipos all the way down to 0 or they can be damaged or worse, the ESC has a built in "Low voltage cut off" that will slow your truck down a lot once it gets to that point, get the truck back to you and unplug the battery and put it on charge, do not keep running it when its goes to low power mode. I actually would. It is a great platform to learn on, but you can’t be afraid to throw $500+ at it to upgrade it to be faster (45ish mph) and reliable.
So I have a slash 2x4 fox edition but the electronics are basically f*cked and do you think it would be smarter to buy a cheaper offbrand rc or upgrade the internals on the slash. I'm leaning towards the slash but I don't know where to start. I want a brushless system under 250 but I want to find like a whole kit that's ready. Or could you maybe find me whats best for it that could make it go like 60 and Is water proof? Please and hopefully thank you😁
I wouldn't get a cheaper off-brand RC. You really get what you pay for. I would suggest that you pick up a Hobbywing system It's also pretty impossible to make a Slash run 60mph for bashing. 40mph is plenty for a Slash 2wd. I've found that mine started breaking a lot more and handled aweful when I had it set up to go 50mph.
I think the stock tires aren’t the hugest deal , the shock caps for sure, maybe driveshafts, upgrade spur , +2 tooth pinion 2s, rpm arms for everyday bashing, aluminum hubs, full bearing kit , or upgrade to gtr shocks , only lcg if you’re racing or rarely off-road
We feel like the stock tires are garbage. Once we switched out the tires it was a complete difference. All the things you said are still great upgrades.
Yes hobby shops carry them. They don't always have a lot of selection though and they may not have them in red. It's a good ideas to call ahead of time and see if they have them in stock. It just depends on the shop.
Steel drive shafts are not really necessary on a 2s to be honest even with grippy tires, you should adjust the slipper clutch accordingly, there is no perfect setting for it.
If you want to stay with plastic because they are cheap, and only run on 2S, then the Rustler 4x4 driveshafts are a great investment. I'd try out a set of those. Just make sure that you get the rear and not the front.
@@traxrc yes... this will be on my brushed raptor... my kid like to run this truck... not sure if I will put brushless motor on this since my 9yr old uses this one... do you have a part number
Yep! Make sure you don't go too short though because the longer an antenna is, the more range you have. I like to set mine up so that when you flip the RC over on a solid surface without the body on, the antenna barely touches the surface so that it is just the body mounts. Makes wrenching a whole lot easier!!!
The brushless model has more power and can run on 3s LiPo. Personally, if you are wanting a 2wd and are even considering going with the brushless model, I would save up and get the Slash 4x4 brushless because it handles the power so much better. You could save a little and get an Arrma Senton 4x4 3S, which is the equivalent to the Slash 4x4 VXL, just much cheaper and needs almost nothing. The Slash 4x4 VXL will need at least metal driveshafts. But, if you want to stay with 2wd and Traxxas, I wouldnt get the brushless Slash 2wd. It needs way to much done to it to hold up to the brushless power. By the time you upgrade it you can get something like a Traxxas Maxx or if your like me, an X-Maxx, which hadn't come out yet. I hope this helps :)
I’m looking to get into this hobby with my eight-year-old autistic son who likes to tinker and take apart his toys is it pretty simple to work on these cause I’m hoping not only to introduce him to a fun hobby but some thing that will let him be creative in build
It's very easy. At first it may be confusing, but once you get familiar with your RC, it's a breeze, and kind of fun! I've never taken an RC to a shop for general maintenance. I've only taken them in if it is something that I can't figure out.
Oh. Aluminum driveshafts aren't a good idea because Aluminum is weaker than steel. Also, only cheap, low quality brands make them for the most part. That's why brands like MIP and Tekno RC use hardened steel, which is even stronger than just steel.
From what I know (just got back into rc so still catching up) I’ve only had to change the spur gear, shock caps and rpm plastics and the car was bullet proof. I haven’t broken a bulkhead yet but people say that’s a weak point too. And your right about the tires but their only good for loose dirt other than that 👎 also a brushed slash doesn’t need driveshafts my slash ran stock driveshafts for 2 years and they never broke I got tekno but my stocks never broke
Yeah we always thought that a Slash was durable when we first got ours but when we progressed in the hobby we realized that it wasn't. The driveshafts on a brushed Slash arent very important, but they set you up right for the future if you go brushless, and you'll never worry about them again.
The only thing I've broken on my 2wd brushed slash in 4 years is the small pin on the gear shaft assembly. Shock caps are annoying, but i just re-oil them every few months while I do a deep clean and it's fine.
Agreed. once I went brushless I though stripped 4 spur gears, those things are horrible. Never had driveshaft issues though but then again I don’t drive it Like Kevin talbot lol but great vid happy New Years to the team 👍🏿🎆
We don't strip spurs that often but every once and a while we do. If you set the mesh good it's not a problem. But most of the time when we strip a spur it's because the pinion moves on hard landings, or rocks/sand got in the gear case. We've seen that Traxxas sells peices that stop the motor from moving and give you perfect gear mesh.
You don’t need to upgrade drive shafts if you have the brushed motor. My suggestion would be to get the velineon or castle brushless right after the 2s battery. The stock driveshafts last quite along time with the brushed motor.
We agree with you! However when we bash our brushed Slashes we brake the driveshafts. It isnt a major weakness but it happens. They wear out over time though with all Slashes, and dramatically reduce the performance after a lot of use, witch also leads to them being more fragile.
Trax RC yes I am agree with that but I personally put the $40-60 dollars you would spend on shafts towards a brushless system first. On a side note i have had the vxl in my slash 2wd with badlands for about 6 months and I have only broken 1 yoke landing a jump with power on.
The brushless is very nice, and really makes the truck more enjoyable. We just said that driveshafts are a weak spot because most people upgrade to brushless, and why not upgrade what you have first that you know wont last so that you don't have to end driving early for something that could have been prevented. Just our opinions from experience. Thanks for watching man!
bro i run stock drive shafts on a 2wd vxl slash and it’s fine you don’t need to upgrade unless they snap. i bash my slash all day through dirt and on a brushed you most definitely don’t need it
The only reason why we included them in this video is because most people with the brushed system upgrade to brushless, and then you need them. Also, it saves money in the long run because you will never have to worry about them again.
6852A axles... 3X cheaper than metal axles. Extreme heavy duty & fits most 2wd vxl cars (not the bandit) & trucks... I have them on my rustler & both of my stampede trucks + no mods either! I broke so many of the factory axles these are great so far
@@traxrc I have the technos on my truck now with the bearing carriers but i hate them pins breaking & wobbling around. You must be doing something crazy with your 🚗 because 2-3 guys at my local RC shop run them on their slashe's & I have yet to break one but of course I believe you because it's only a factory part lol. Keep up the good work. Many years ago 7+ I think I remember my buddy doing this upgrade in his slash with the X0-1 diffs but I did not do it. I think the truck should be pretty good if you're running 2 or 3S on factory parts but for the 💰 $20 per diff it's say it's worth it!
Yes! Very easy! Just costs money for the system and more aftermarket upgrades to strengthen the drivetrain! I have another video titled, first 10 upgrades specifically for the brushless models!
The traxxas batteries are both double the price of other batteries and not as powerful at the same time ie, the traxxas batteries cost around 80 a piece for a 3s and a pack of two really good 3s batteries with more power than the traxxas (look at the cc rating) will cost around 65. The chargers are so over priced just get a solid charger for 80 dollars instead of the 130 that the traxxas costs.
Again, I agree with you, but this video is geared towards beginners that don’t understand how complex charging a LiPo battery actually is. The Traxxas chargers completely eliminate the extra steps, which keeps everyone safe. I think that this is very important for new hobbyists.
@@traxrc okay bro so I'm new to this RC Traxxas stuff I love it but I just bought me a truck I got the Traxxas Slash RTR now all my friends have the Traxxas Slash VXL or whatever I know mine's not as fast as theirs so what I did was I bought a motor and servo that's the vxl3 by putting this in this truck will it make it as fast as theirs and is there anything I need to know when doing this upgrade
@@traxrc I want to send you a picture of what I bought and the motor and servo I'm looking at buying so maybe you can tell me that it will work in my truck
Upgrading to brushless, which is the VXL system, will make your car faster. I think that you are getting confused though with the servo and ESC. The servo is what steers the car, the ESC is what you plug the battery into, and it stand for Electronic Speed Control. Then the motor obviously drives the car. If you want to send us some pictures, pm on facebook! Link is in the Description of the video :)
Gotta be careful with your upgrades if you intend on getting into racing cause a lot of clubs and shops have a stock slash class which is great for beginners but they do restrict the mods you can do because it is supposed to be a stock class. For example the track i sometimes go to you can only use traxxas wheels and tires.
Ok, i get when people say upgrade that, upgrade this, but why do it if my rc still runs great? Like why bother changing things and spending money if nothing is broken yet? I agree with performance related parts, but not suspention or others. I just order some spares before something brakes and only then replace. Why bother buying 50 $ metal hub carriers if i brake one pair once a year? Just replace that 5 dollar part once a year and save some money for motors or batteries. Just my opinion. Thanks for video
I lot of it is preventative and if you change out a power system for more power, that puts more stress on certain components so it's a reason to upgrade. Also, Most RC's have very poorly designed/weak parts installed from the factory and those should be swapped immediately so that you don't have issues.
So you spent more on a battery and charger than you did on the truck? traxxas batteries and chargers are way to expensive. Don't replace anything unless it breaks, your wasting money. Their anit a dam thing wrong with the stock tires, again run them till they are wore slam out.
naaaaa, why spending on a garbage, only thing worth spending is lcg chassis and sterring servo, that's all... get the 2bls brushless, put servo and lcg and that's it. If it's to spend, do it in a better car... there is absolutely no point in spending in a slash.
Most of the time you can cheap out a bit on batteries, but never a charger. High end chargers have safety features that you definitely want to have. We have a whole video on this topic, it is our most viewed video on our channel so if you go to our home page and go to popular uploads section it will be the first video. Traxxas stuff is really overpriced, mainly their cars. For what you get with your money isn't the best. Their tools are very high quality though and worth everu penny. If you look at Arrma for example, you get a lot more bang for your buck Thanks for watching man!
So, in summary, the slash is great... once you replace everything except the front A-arms?
For the brushless model yes. For brushed it's different because less power. A lot of the parts I said in the video are to make the transition from brushed to brushless easier because most people do that swap.

Where did he get the mud flaps from?
They are made by RPM
Would you recommend the slash for a beginner? Looking for something off-road, can be upgraded to go fast, and isn’t above $250 starting price
Please and hopefully thank you😁
Alsoooo I don't want to do any sodering. And tell me if I have to if I do have to
I wouldn't get a cheaper off-brand RC.
@@traxrc , for most intensive purposes of hitting every surface except super loose stuff or mud I think the stock tires will slide and be sick
They are pretty awful in grass too. That's where we run most of our RCs
@@traxrc me personally I run everywhere so I use my redcat blackout xte , it runs really hot in grass
That's Redcat for ya lol. We've never had a Redcat basher. Do you have durability issues??
I got a brushless slash 2wd I got the suspension upgrade I might upgrade my motor idk whats the best upgrade yet
Don’t upgrade the motor unless ur experienced. Every crash will be a broken part if u go too crazy with the motor. LCG chassis is a great upgrade.
Ah ok I used to own a wide body max it was fun to jump with, I'll probably check out the LCG chassis thanks
There are so many great tips! Thank you!
Ur welcome and any time!
Do local hobby shops sell the red rpm a arms and bulkhead or do I have to order them online?
Yes hobby shops carry them. They don't always have a lot of selection though and they may not have them in red. It's a good ideas to call ahead of time and see if they have them in stock. It just depends on the shop.
@@traxrc Ok thank u
👍
Steel drive shafts are not really necessary on a 2s to be honest even with grippy tires, you should adjust the slipper clutch accordingly, there is no perfect setting for it.
I've had many plastic driveshafts break on 2S. It's not so much they break but they wear out fast.
@@traxrc is the stampede driveshaft the one that needs no mods?
If you want to stay with plastic because they are cheap, and only run on 2S, then the Rustler 4x4 driveshafts are a great investment. I'd try out a set of those. Just make sure that you get the rear and not the front.
@@traxrc yes... this will be on my brushed raptor... my kid like to run this truck... not sure if I will put brushless motor on this since my 9yr old uses this one... do you have a part number

Nice video man, thanks for the info, new to the game, Trying to soak up tips. Liked and subscribed!
Glad I could help dude! 👊 Thanks for the sub🤘🤘
I use the new rustler tires on my slash
The 2wd or 4x4 Rustler tires?
@@traxrc I believe the 4wd
Those are good tires! I bet they look sick 🤘
@@traxrc yes! I just need a new body… sadly I can’t get one as of now
Sounds like you got a cool build
If you have problems with flipping you should look into get sway bars for the front and rear.
Only ones you can get is Hot Racing, but the best way to stop it from rolling easily is to get the LCG chassis.
@@traxrc that what I have on my slash with sway bars.
How do you get that short antenna on the slash on the right? With the red antenna
You just push the extra wire into the reciever box.
@@traxrc oh wow I didn’t know that I will defiantly to that on my slash Tommorow thanks!
Yep! Make sure you don't go too short though because the longer an antenna is, the more range you have. I like to set mine up so that when you flip the RC over on a solid surface without the body on, the antenna barely touches the surface so that it is just the body mounts. Makes wrenching a whole lot easier!!!
@@traxrc awesome thanks for the help!
No problem!
This helped alot I just got a new slash 🙂🙂
Cool!!
I have the traxxas slash 4x4 vxl do you have a video about that model
No sorry, I actually have never even drove one lol
If you think about it you only need a single charger because you can charge one then while your using your rc you can charge the second battery
It takes longer to charge then to drive though
Yeah I guess
Also I can’t decide between a brushed and a brushless slash what is the difference?
Thank you so much, so for the arrma Senton 4x4 you say it needs almost nothing what does it need? A battery I’m guessing?
I’m looking to get into this hobby with my eight-year-old autistic son who likes to tinker and take apart his toys is it pretty simple to work on these cause I’m hoping not only to introduce him to a fun hobby but some thing that will let him be creative in build
That's awesome!!! I'm sure that your son would love to work on RCs with you!!
Thank you for responding is the maintenance and modifications fairly easy to do yourself? Or do you take them to a RC shop?? Thank you again
It's very easy. At first it may be confusing, but once you get familiar with your RC, it's a breeze, and kind of fun! I've never taken an RC to a shop for general maintenance. I've only taken them in if it is something that I can't figure out.
@@traxrc Thank you just picked up my son new slash and I’ll be heading back to the RC shop to purchase the recomended upgrades
Awesome!!
Why not aluminum? I was about to buy a set for mine.
Which part are you talking about?
@@traxrc driveshafts
Oh. Aluminum driveshafts aren't a good idea because Aluminum is weaker than steel. Also, only cheap, low quality brands make them for the most part. That's why brands like MIP and Tekno RC use hardened steel, which is even stronger than just steel.
@@traxrc thanks. I bought the MIPs. Pain in the rear to install but hopefully only will have to once.
Great choice! They are easy on one side, but on the other it takes longer because I'd the spur gear and gear cover.
On a brushed Slash you will break less parts if you drive responsibly. When your brushless it's a completely different story.
Agreed. once I went brushless I though stripped 4 spur gears, those things are horrible.
Yes
Trax RC ya. I’m not saying anything against what you said. Nice videos man
No worries dude, to each their own!
We work very hard on our channel and glad you enjoy it:)
bro i run stock drive shafts on a 2wd vxl slash and it’s fine you don’t need to upgrade unless they snap. i bash my slash all day through dirt and on a brushed you most definitely don’t need it
The only reason why we included them in this video is because most people with the brushed system upgrade to brushless, and then you need them. Also, it saves money in the long run because you will never have to worry about them again.
Do tires come with four or just two?
Just 2! You'll need to order 2 in order to get 4.
6852A axles... 3X cheaper than metal axles. Extreme heavy duty & fits most 2wd vxl cars (not the bandit) & trucks... I have them on my rustler & both of my stampede trucks + no mods either! I broke so many of the factory axles these are great so far
I have actually broken those ones but if ur on a budget then they r great. If u have the money techno is the way to go.
Where did u get the front shock guard
They are made by RPM
Can you post the battery link please?

Can u transfer it to brushless
Yes! Very easy! Just costs money for the system and more aftermarket upgrades to strengthen the drivetrain! I have another video titled, first 10 upgrades specifically for the brushless models!
@@traxrcwhat is the brushless system called?
2:11 “And probably the charger and the battery will catch fire”
Love your intro btw
Thanks dude!
@@traxrc I agree
Hey bro I have a question ⁉️
Ok what's up?
@@traxrc yes didn't mean servo but speed controller.i was using text to talk so it put the wrong word.ok thanks bro.
Anyone watching this I’d recommend buying a brushless car because it’s a fact that you’ll want to upgrade at some point
I agree!
Very true! I've never raced though and my channel is primarily for bashing.
You Should have bought an ARRMA
Yes… I know lol. Arrmas weren’t mainstream when I got this RC though.
I’m not made of money so hopefully it doesn’t break and comes with a battery
Slashes don't come with a battery and as long as you don't beat it you won't have major problems.
I have the Traxxas Ford Raptor and these tips were great and you convinced my to subscribe.
Thank you so much! Glad we could help!!
Guessing you kinda new too?
Not at all. Been in the hobby for 7 years.
@@traxrc cause you seem like it
Not really but ok.
So you spent more on a battery and charger than you did on the truck? traxxas batteries and chargers are way to expensive. Don't replace anything unless it breaks, your wasting money. Their anit a dam thing wrong with the stock tires, again run them till they are wore slam out.
First upgrade: remove traxxas radio equipment, no throttle trim or throttle reverse is absurd.
Nah. Traxxas radios are good. Only downsides for me is the range. You can still reverse it too, just not with a button.
@@traxrc I'm going to put a DumboRC radio with a gyro in, solve all of those things and more for $50
naaaaa, why spending on a garbage, only thing worth spending is lcg chassis and sterring servo, that's all... get the 2bls brushless, put servo and lcg and that's it. If it's to spend, do it in a better car... there is absolutely no point in spending in a slash.
I agree with that but if someone only has a slash then these would be the best upgrades without getting a new car.
I got a commonsense 2s and its great the traxxas battery stuff is overpriced just get a dynamite charger and just pay attention to it.
Great vid, i really wish this was out when i got mine last year. Its such a great car! The traxxas isnt bad its just super expensive😅
@@traxrc yeah, true especially with lipos⚡🔥
