    years ago, i had a therapist who is deaf and she taught me a lot. She wanted me to lift my face so it is eye level and she can read my lips. I was having emotional issues that made me turn away a lot and made it hard to speak clearly or speak at all so we would write on paper. It worked well for both of us. Now im facing hearing loss myself and i have so much new appreciation for her.

    a couple of days ago i was officially diagnosed with sever hearing loss in my right ear. It was extremely scary to me when my audiologist told me that my hearing was permanent, and there was no way to reverse it. Now im having to get blood work done and MRI scans and a whole bunch of things done because they think i might have a tumor that is stunting my hearing, but no matter what i'll end up getting a hearing aid. Initially i was mortified of the thought of having to go to school with a hearing aid, and i have very short hair so its not like i can hide it from my piers, but after getting in contact with other d/Deaf and hard of hearing people online and in real life, im not so scared anymore. Thank you for putting out videos, i subscribed to you last night after seeing your "Why I decorate my hearing aids" video, and i really appreciate your optimism!

    Sadly I'm 12 years old and have hearing loss but I'm never a Debbie downer about it and I'm always trying to be happy with the way god made me☺️ I wish people at my school saw this because if I don't hear what they're saying or I can't understand they won't tell me or they will laugh:( But your videos always bring up my spirit because I know I'm not alone and there are always ways to deal with challenges thrown in your way

    I've recently found your channel and I love it!
    I'm a hearing person who is interested to learn more about Deaf culture and your videos are really good - informative and fun to watch.
    I started learning ASL and very much enjoy seeing you sign as you speak.
    Great stuff :)

    I absolutely love you videos and your energy. I have hearing loss and I have to say I love your point about facing those you are speaking to. I use the little hearing I do have mixed with lip reading to be able to hold conversations with those around me. I am learning ASL, as are both of my children. My youngest is nonverbal after an in utero stroke, but ASL helps him as much as it does myself. Your upbeat optimism paired with your humor makes everything seem more bright! Thank you so much!

    I love the app marco polo. It's super helpful for my friend to sign to me and then text on screen what the signs where in case i am not sure what was saif. This way i am learning all the signs and staying in the conversation.

      Jessica Flores Thank YOU!!! 😃
      I thought of something that is a thing for hearing people NOT to do when communicating with a deaf person. When a deaf person asks the hearing person to repeat themselves, they should NEVER say, "Never mind," and break eye contact. Feels like a slap in the face.

    Hey there Jessica thanks for another awesome vid. One approach that I think people could also do is to use captioning apps like Ava. I'm trying to get my family to use something like this for big family dinners so I can be able to understand who is saying what. I think it's important for friends and family members to at least meet us half way in steps like this. Although ASL would be the best method, this can serve as a nice middle ground.
    Also update, I just got the final paperwork through the IDHS and I should be getting a call from my audiologist to tell me when my hearing aids are ready pretty soon! Now that this is almost taken care of, I'm going to enroll in my local community college to take ASL classes.
    Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction. You really helped me out here.

      MrZero405 Thanks for sharing this! AVA is a cool app, I use it every now and then. Also hope you enjoy the hearing aids, as always feel free to let me know how they're working out for you. Stay Cool!

    Thank you soooo much! I was just diagnosed with a hearing loss and scheduled to get hearing aids on Monday. I have been told that it is probably going to be a bit overwhelming at first with all these sounds bombarding me that I am not used to. I have not heard ambient noises, (birds, leaves, wind in trees, traffic, plus alot of other stuff for along time!) Anyways, you are so reassuring and helpful! I might post a video of my experience, just to share. Thanks again!

      I know this comment is from two years ago, but I wanted to add something funny. When I finally started wearing my hearing aids again a few years ago, after not wearing them for so long, I was running from vacuum cleaners. The sudden, extremely loud noise had me running for the hills. If I saw someone pull a vacuum out or go near one, I tried to be gone as fast as I could. Now I know how dogs and cats feel.

    It's weird being a middle aged adult who is starting to lose their hearing. And am thankful to have a spouse that has had several years of ASL in college.

    awesome video Jessica! my dad lost his hearing in one ear and is hard of hearing in the other. I keep encouraging him to learn ASL with me since I'm an ASL student but he won't. My mom keeps nagging him to get hearing aids but he refuses. Do u have any advice of how I can convince him to learn even a few basic signs?

    • @JessicaFloresLimeMoney
      @JessicaFloresLimeMoney  5 лет назад

      I get this question a lot and one piece of advice I always give people is to keep using ASL but don't force it on someone to learn it. People don't like to be forced into doing anything. So try to just speak and sign at the same time and use it around him as much as possible. The idea is that if he sees you signing more and using it over time he will want to try and learn a few things every now and then. But let him come to you if he wants to learn something, don't force him to learn it. Hope this helps a bit!

    My dad refuses to accept he is lossing his hearing. My mom, me and my sister's have been learning sign language but he doesn't want to. I'm sure if I started drawing on a peace of paper he would be mad. Thankfully he can read lips pretty well but I just wish he was more open to learning.

    • @JessicaFloresLimeMoney
      @JessicaFloresLimeMoney  6 лет назад +3

      Not everyone is going to be open to learning it. Some people feel like learning sign language makes them feel "more disabled" but when really they just haven't been exposed to sign language at a early age. That's why is another video I mentioned that it is a good idea to learn sign language but don't force anyone to learn it because no one wants to do something that everyone is pressuring them to do. Just sign and maybe eventually he will come around, if not at least a whole bunch of other Deaf/HoH people will benefit from you guys knowing sign language.
