There are 4 chargers and four "EV Only" spots (two with cars charging, one where the Hummer was parked and one open spot). The Mustang was parked in a spot beyond the border of the EV charging spots.

    Seeing your excitement to go off roading at Moab and knowing what's to come makes me dislike this vehicle more. The extreme price of this vehicle and it's unreliability really shouldn't be acceptable. It'd be different if you'd spent $10,000 on an FJ with 200,000 miles on it and it broke down and ruined your trip. But to spend what you did on the Hummer I would expect perfection. Granted, my FJ did have to have a water pump put on it at 190,000 but it gave me plenty of warning for weeks with the squeaking of the bearings. With all sincerity, I would trust my FJ far more than I would the Hummer. This is not an EV rant. It's more of a manufacturer rant. I like EVs. Thanks for being so transparent with all the issues with this vehicle.

    I'm just going to say, if it's stock tire size was 35 and it struggled off-road, it's got more design problems than what sizing up tires will fix. My old ZR2 had 31s and I never felt it needed bigger, but thats also probably because it followed the old school off-road design philosophy of be as small of a footprint as you can and what you can't go over you can go around and to be efficient with what power you have. New off-road design is basically build the most offensively large, heavy and powerful vehicle possible and just mindlessly crush everything under massive tires. There's a point where that alone stops working, and the Hummer clearly went passed that. In a way I find it beautifully poetic that the Hummer EV can't be trusted to handle trails that my current Jeep Renegade can't handle at like a third of its size. It's just a massive Soft-Roader that uses size and tech to disguise the fact that it's basically a crossover in terms of performance. Rivian has proven an EV off-road truck can work, so this isn't a dig on EVs, but rather the Hummers massive unapologetic size and weight being it's Achilles heel.
    All that said, if someone where to gift me one is have a hard time saying no. Despite it's unmanageable size, lackluster performance and extreme inefficiency there's still something attractive about the truck itself to me. Perhaps like Roman, I just like the way it looks.

    • @rickberger3213
      @rickberger3213 18 дней назад

      First off, if you spent that much money on a truck, why would off-road it. This is not an off-road vehicle per se. It's a road vehicle that looks like a tank. And 37's for on-road use is going to make the vehicle ride worse and be much more road noise. It's just stupid to think it's an off-road vehicle

    With current battery cells technology, big heavy SUVs don't make any economical sense. Doesn't help too, the current trend spread by Tesla to have an iPad on wheels, full of tech gimmicks prone to failure. Automakers should do the Power tools route, simple and robust, with batteries interchangeable.

    • @smokeymotorsport
      @smokeymotorsport Год назад

      Big heavy SUVs are what DOES make sense to car makers - that's the largest market buyers want, and a big car affords you the space for a big heavy battery. As for the technology, Tesla were early adopters but pretty much every manufacturer now uses big screens, touchscreen everything etc so I wouldn't pin it on Tesla, it's "market-approved" now it's so widespread. I agree it does mean if it fails you've got nothing, you no longer just lose your nav and maybe your radio, in a Model 3 or Y you couldn't drive the car or even open the glovebox.

      Caveat: I understand why manufacturers err on the side of showing faster than true speed because they have nothing to gain by trying to be truly accurate only to have the margin of error mistakenly show you going faster than the speedometer because the lawsuits that would arise if you get a ticket for going faster than the vehicle indicated. Use Waze to get a 2nd opinion on MPH distance traveled. They may both be wrong, but at least you'd have confirmation that at least one number was wrong.

    Roman, have you guys calculated the efficiency ratings using GPS and the kWhs from the charger to validate the mileage/kWh ratings shown on the vehicle dashboards? I know the ICE vehicle fuel economy computers are always different from your manually calculated numbers when you test ICE fuel economy.

    • @anzew88
      @anzew88 Год назад

      If my math is correct, this is not more economical. At 1,5 MPkWh, the cost per mile is 0,28$ (EA price of 0,43$/kWh). But if the gas truck does 15 MPG at gas price of 3,8$, the mile costs 0,25$...
      So it's cheaper to run gas offroad truck compared to Hummer HV. I am presuming the gas truck does 15MPG, with 10MPG your per mile cost is 0,4$... but also gets cheaper as MPGs go up.
      On the other hand F150 Raptor with 18 MPG highway cost per mile is comparable to its electric brother Lightning at 2MPkWh...
      So how is EV a more economical choice without even considering higher initial cost to buy.
      I'm sad to see EVs going down the drain.
      It's much worse in Europe, with almost twice as expensive EV charger rates...

    • @shitloveaduck
      @shitloveaduck Год назад

      @@anzew88 - EVs are not fully about the economic benefits, but they really are cheap because most, if not all, of your charging will be at home and not these stations. The only exception is if you are on a road trip. The BIGGEST reason EVs are so important is the lack of emissions. It’s the emissions that are contributing to global warming.
      Going with a PHEV like the Jeep 4xe models available, are a great alternative. You commute and shop etc all week driving as an EV only. Then on days off and if you are road tripping, drive it as a hybrid! Much better fuel economy than the similar ICE engined vehicle, wayyyyy more hp and torque, and quick fill ups. Then when you get home, plug it in and get ready for another week of EV commuting. Best of both worlds and you are greatly reducing hydrocarbons etc in the air.

    • @anzew88
      @anzew88 Год назад +1

      @@shitloveaduck I'm merely commenting on Romans nonsense babbling...
      I do own a first gen Leaf, I'm very happy with it, but in last year home electricity rates tripled and public chargers went from free to 3-4 times the home charging rates. Still is cheaper per kilometre, but as I said, I'm sad to see EVs go down the drain, because why would you pay double the initial cost for a car that delivers half of what a half cheaper ICE alternative would cost you to buy new.
      Our Leaf has a very specific runabout role in the family, outside that it doesn't make any sense to run an EV anymore.
      The carbon footprint coin has two sides, so that slope is slippery. There is much more to that, but yes you do lower intown emissions, for overall emission to get bellow a similar ICE, that's a long road still, for Leaf about 150 000km before it equals for a bigger battery car, closer to 250 000km... And I'm affraid the Leafs battery won't last until 150k...

For example, is the difference in fuel efficiency between an ICE vehicle at 75 mph up a steady climb versus if you drove at say 70 mph better/worse than difference in efficiency of an EV at 75 vs 70 mph up that same climb? Are you losing more gas or electrons relative to the driving task? Yes, it's less of a worry to lose mpg vs watts because of the ease of refilling. But which vehicle is actually more efficient?

    I get what you’re saying re: automation, but I think we are a very *very* long way from seeing fully autonomous vehicles in general use. We’ll see a lot of what you’ve already reviewed: vehicles that can drive themselves on good highways in good visibility. As time progresses, what constitutes “good” will broaden, most likely. We still have cars running into stationary objects because computers, it turns out, aren’t actually good at recognizing the difference between an object and a shadow.

    Assisted driving may seem like a threat to those who like to drive, but if I had to guess, most people would agree that they would prefer to not have to deal with heavy stop and go traffic in urban settings, or conversely long straight highway drives, where having the vehicle take over IS exactly what people want. Then factor in situations like being out at night and having a bit too much to drink - letting your car drive you home safely. Of course we’re not there yet with the technology, but improvements will happen over the next decade that make these things the norm, not the exception.

I love following dirt roads back to small creeks to find that one hidden trout honeypot, I like taking a nice cruise through old growth forest to get to that special hiking trail with the great views. I do not like the miles of uninspired empty 4-6 lane roadways I sometimes have to travel to get there. And when my in-laws decide to vacation in Ocean City? That's a 6+hour boring drive. That's where driver assistance technology and self driving is at its best. I feel Ford and GM know this better than Tesla, since their self driving systems seem to focus on these areas almost exclusively where Tesla wants their self driving tech to work everywhere, even where I have no desire to use it, nor feel I can trust it (hard to trust someone else driving let alone self driving car on a gravel roadway hugging a cliff edge with the only barrier being a braided steel cable that hasn't been maintained in 40 years.)

Most folks on this channel know about how air resistance increases exponentially with increase in speed, but don't consider that the top of you tires are moving TWICE as fast thru the air as the rest of your vehicle. If you're driving 75 mph, the top of your tire is resisting 150 mph of wind resistance. AND those lugs have a much higher coefficient of drag than the rest of the truck.
