I don't know why, but the broken vessel reaching out to the knight in their last moments was the saddest part of the game hands down. It also explains how they got infected, they had emotions. They didn't want to die

it took me twelve attempts to beat the Broken Vessel
everytime i walked into that arena the theme felt more desperate

The worst is the « accept » when you defeat lost kin
I think thats why The Abyss, and what the Pale King did was unforgivable. They all had emotions. Have you SEEN the sheer amount of vessel corpses in this game? It's almost unbelievable, there were probably about 100 thousand vessels, MAYBE EVEN MORE, all with emotions and a will.
@nuttynutsnutstache Discarded because they had said emotions and will. And ultimately, the Hollow Knight gained them anyway.
Something about this theme just encapsulates the sheer creepiness, but also tragedy, that this fight has. Here is one of your own. Dead and broken and now being controlled by that which you were bred to destroy. You couldn't save your kin, but you can put them down to grant them peace.

I love how the main hollow knight theme is mixed into the main melody, encapsulating the tragedy of broken vessel, and how it failed in it’s quest of becoming the hollow knight
I'm pretty sure Broken Vessel wasn't trying to become the Hollow Knight, but rather he's a vessel that tried escaping the abyss and failed

A little detail about Lost Kin fight:
At the end, the interaction displays 'Accept' instead of 'Listen' as Vessels have 'no voice to cry suffering'. You accept that your kin is dead. You accept that you never meant to live, but here you are - saving the kingdom at finishing what was once started.

Myla getting infected has nothing to do with fighting broken vessel, it's fighting soul master and getting crystal heart that infect her
One of the most emotionally gut-punching prompts I’ve seen in a videogame was the simple “accept” after beating lost kin.
I remember reading an interesting comment on the terminated version of this video on IndiGo's channel, it went something like this:
The names of the dream bosses are from the Knight's point of view. Broken Vessel becomes Lost Kin, as it's a fallen sibling of the Knight ridden with infection, False Knight becomes Failed Champion due to it failing to protect its brethren, and Soul Master becomes Soul Tyrant because of his madness and committing genocide on hundreds of bugs in an attempt to find a cure for the infection using soul.
An even better reply I found underneath that comment said something like
"This implies that the Knight gave Zote all of his titles and I'm all here for it"

Maybe it's just from the perspective of someone else, specifically being the knight's for broken vessel. soul tyrant is from the souls of the many dead bugs, failed champion is from his fellow grubs (who view him as their champion), white defender is from his own view (there's nobody else alive who really has a link to him) and grey prince zote is obviously also from the knight's POV. i mean, that just makes the most sense

One thing that sucks is that I'll never get to fight lost kin the same way again. He was my first dream boss rematch, and I spent hours fighting him since I had minimal upgrades. This theme made it all worth it, the way it would ramp up as you got far into an attempt.
Lost Kin on my second playthrough, without a great nail, is my favourite boss fight in gaming
what a shame that they gave it another theme in the fourth phanteon, it is terrible.
I actually got lost kin on my 3rd attempt, probably because I spent hours on the failed champion
I did back-to-back Broken Vessel and Lost Kin ( I intend to get true ending) and beat them both without dying. Used Shaman's Stone, Quick Focus, Spore Shroom, and Grubsong. Did good on Broken Vessel and absolutely _TANKED_ Lost Kin.

I too got stuck on lost kin for hours (1st play through)because of minimal upgrades.I took a break,grind for a few hours,came back over prepared and destroyed lost kin.

Something I realized recently is, we do not accept a vessel after Lost Kin. They aren't a shade. They are a dream. We accept the child that the shell belonged to

I doubt it, Broken Vessel is just a corpse by the time you find it, its Shade long gone. It's more of a puppet controlled by the Radiance than a slave (like the Hollow Knight).

This fight, together with the Mantis Lord fight, is one of the most climatic moments of the game. Both are serious turning points that bring forth great changes.
But while besting the Mantis Lords in that epic battle a the tune of one hell of a badass music elicits a sense of accomplishment, personified in ALL the mantis tribe bowing in respect to you (that detail had me fist pumping the first time I saw it); the Broken Vessel brings... the stirring of the true evil that slumbers in Hollownest.
Seriously, there is nothing more ominous than seeing the Forgotten Crossroads corrupted. It really drives you to find those dreamers.
In short: Pure, unadulterated epicness. Creepy, unadulterated epic foreshadowing of the Knight.
Actually the Crossroads become corrupted either after you kill one of the dreamers, or after you get the monarch wings. Defeating the Broken Vessel alone doesn’t corrupt the crossroads.
Fun Fact: the marching beat at the beginning matches up perfectly with your nail swings
Out of any boss theme in the game this is by far the most fitting for said boss. Only other that comes to mind near as fitting is the hallow knight phase 2 theme.

Hornet's theme isn't that fitting? Dung/White Defender? Radiance? Those 3 definitely have very fitting themes
Honestly all the bosses have amazing themes which are fitting
I would actually say this is one of the least fitting. It fits, and is one of my favorites, to be sure, but when it comes to fitting with the boss, I'd say it's probably in the bottom half.
@@thearcanehunter2736 It's my opinion but I say it fits do to what you're fighting is you're sibling turned into a zombie if could actually happen that would be rather depressing and messed up thing to be forced to do so the use of heaver tones used to make a darker and eerier feeling makes a hole lot of since and the second major thing is the strong use of hollow knights main motif because this is knight sibling that almost looks like carbon copy of the knight and who died doing the same main goal or previous goal the knight had. I guess what I'm trying to say is the fact it uses heaver tones and strongly uses the main hollow knight motif makes it in my opinion dang near perfectly fits the situation at hand when it plays.
Final just curious but what makes ya think it doesn't fit the boss im curious and ya could have a point my monkey brain hasn't noticed on it's own.
I love when games include leitmotifs in tracks with completely different vibes to tie them together
The fact that team cherry effectively put Ghost's maimed sibling in front of us and went "Hey pass me the aux cord real quick" will never cease to be funny to me
This fight felt personal, especially after what happened to Myla. It was like I was clashing nails with the plague that had brought so much pain itself
Trying to set up context for each hollow knight song in this playlist before the song ends:
It looks like you. So why is it attacking? Every move this creature makes is filled with sorrow and bitterness. It doesnt want to be saved from this fate. It didnt choose this, but it’s accepted it. It has fallen.
I love how the way the crossroads can become infected involve the killing of one of the dreamers, weakening the seal on the black egg, increasing the effect that the trapped god has over the outside world;
or a bunch of little infection seeds escaping after you beat them out of your dead cousin.
My theory is that Hollow Knight had a "message" when BV reached out for the knight, like how the knight got a message when HK's shell cracked, causing him to go to dirtmouth and start the adventure.
This would then make Hollow Knight feel more emotions, making Radiance feed herself more on it, infecting HK further, making the infection spill out faster (especially since he must have felt the feeling of his brothers dying for a lot of other killed vessel previously, might have actually been the reason behind his shell cracking, too, but whatever)

It fits in having none. Neither the HK nor Broken Vessel have any, they are vessels, after all, designed to feel nothing and lack an opinion and will of their own.

1:05 this part gives me chills down my spine, this is such a good theme and I think it captures the despair of this vessel
both sealed vesel and broken vessel themes are amazing. Perhaps silksong will add a ''lost vessel'' to that list
God, this theme is forever burned into my memory. Reason being: I accidentally went down to the Abyss with only a +2 Nail. I thought I could just get back out if I needed to, but nope. It took me an hour to beat Broken Vessel, and the attempt I did, took a total of 10 minutes. 10 minutes of chaos and precision. After that, I mentally made a note to NEVER go down that hole in the City until I’m absolutely ready for what lies beyond

It's possible to pogo out on the spikes lol, I had to do that for my brother because he gave up on BV with his nail he never upgraded
i beated broken vessel in my third try with lvl 2 nail i accidently go here btw
I played this game going in completely blind so i had no clue the city of tears or the nail smith existed so when fighting this boss i did it with the worst nail possible

The song reminds me a lot of "papers please"
When I beat this dude and got the wings, I ran back and rode the stagway right to Dirtmouth, and when I was done there I saw the ominous orange glow coming from the well and went "Oh that's weird, wonder what that means!" And then was promptly very upset when the Crossroads had gotten rekt. Though I had recently found the Glowing Womb charm and i kept forgetting to pay attention in dialogue and cutscenes and had taken a long break since the beginning so I just thought it was the orange flies' fault.

This music mixes creepiness,tragedy,aggression,and royalty all in one go and i love it
Really wasn’t into this boss when I first met it. It was difficult and it felt Iike “another boss”. But after learning the story and beating lost kin, broken vessel is definitely in my top 3 bosses. Rest in peace little vessel, you will never be forgotten.

Lost kin can be very frustrating, but that one perfect radiant run…
There’s nothing like it, by far the most satisfying boss to do radiant.
I’d beg to differ. Absolute radiance. I spent 2 months on that agony of a boss, I got past the climb, and to where I died before. The barrage. Instead of jumping and pogoing, I attacked from the sides while dodging. 30 seconds go by, and the radiance teleports to the middle. The knight swings wildly and I hear the scream of the abyss. I finally did it. Seeing her bleed her dream essence felt amazing after all the suffering I endured. I was shaky as hell.
(I was on radiant by the way.)

This is such a simple mid game boss, especially compared to the absolutely insane fights you see later in the game, but honestly, this one might be my favorite.

The reason why the vessels were thrown into The Abyss was because they had feelings and would fall to the infection without containing it

All vessels had emotions, minds and will. That was the flaw in the Pale King's plan. He expected that by contaminating his children with void they'd be empty, but he really just created a bunch of not-alive-not-dead kids that still could feel and think.
Not really. The Radiance was able to take control of the Hollow Knight's living body because it expressed emotion. Broken Vessel on the other hand is just a shell without a shade, effectively a corpse. It is in a way ironic, that the body that was once controlled by the Void is now in the same way controlled by the Infection.
My favorite indie of all time. I can't love it enough!

One of my favorite bosses, a challenge but for me, but still not so hard it took a million tries like Mantis Lords.

The main theme of Hollow Knight makes a lietmotif in here. I'm not sure if it has any meaning but I just found this out while waiting in the title screen.
it definitely has some meaning. all vessels were created in an attempt to be chosen as the one true hollow knight. it's just that only one vessel was capable of doing so.
take a look at the sealed vessel theme. it got very close to becoming the true hollow knight, but it failed in containing the infection completely. it got much farther along its journey than the broken vessel did, so that's why sealed vessel contains more of the game's main theme, yet not all of it.
i imagine the entire main theme is associated with the player's vessel, because in the end, we're able to completely contain the infection.
i'm not gonna think too hard about the pure vessel's theme, cause PV is only in the godseeker's mind.

i'm suprised, i'm in my first playthrough right now i beat him like 4-8 tries with 6 health/mask and i thought "damn, i sucked at this game" and "what am i doing wrong" cause i'm stuck at hornet sentinel with still 6 mask.

@@act01 you can find quick slash near the top of kingdom's edge and it's one of the best charms in the entire game, it basically doubles your nail swing speed.
I'd definitely reccomend a channeled or coiled nail for hornet 2.

On my first playthrough I was scared out of my mind when I jumped into the stag station and saw the orange smoke coming out of the crossroads, but now I love the crossroads, do you know how much money infected enemies give you?

Broken vessel battle cry is just the radiance cry but quite than hollow knights which keeps me thinking if vessels in general don't have a voice why did the pale king bother mentioning it ( I think it was said to sound cool n cryptic)
I just love how the first part of this track captures the essence of something broken, running on its last legs, yet relentless.

If you listen close enough to you can actually hear the main menu theme being played at 0:22 since this is the music for hollow knight and the ost for the main menu ost is called "hollow knight" aswell

This is the first case I know where A dark being (in this case, Broken vessel) gets possesed by a being of light (The infection, a.k.a. The Radiance).
@Deadpoppin But Myla is a normal bug, we can assume she was born in a normal, biological way. On the other hand (SPOILER)
The knight, Broken Vessel and Pure Vessel were born in special conditions, having the void substance within them, (which is a manifestation of pure darkness, so by having access to it, it gives them the category of a "Dark being".
This is not my favorite boss of Hollow Knight (hard to choose), but is my favorite soundtrack of boss fights

This song just portrays sadness regrets and anguish all from this seemingly dead vessel but at the end of the fight you see the broken vessel reaching out to you and that combined with the fact that it is your sibling really just exemplifies the impact of the song

I'm a different person, IndiGo was the uploader of the OG HK OST but their channel got terminated for copyright strikes. Probably because they also had Nintendo music on their channel. I won't make the same mistake!

You can also hear the leitmotif of the main theme of the game. It shows you how the Broken Vessel is one of your kind, another failed vessel just like you. It’s brilliant.
@@nicoarrigoni3898and i love the fact that it's only a small section of the main theme. it conveys that the broken vessel wasn't pure enough to become the true hollow knight; same logic applies to the sealed vessel theme. obviously, the main theme IS the entirety of the main theme, which is a nod to the fact that we are able to completely seal the radiance and become the hollow knight
