the soul sanctum is by far some of the best tonal whiplash i've seen in any game, and it succeeds not just the city of tears, but the entire game, up to this point, every area in this game up until how has had a music that feels whimsical and mysterious, like you were on some amazing adventure through a lost kingdom, this area was the way to remind you that the kingdom was abandoned for a reason, and the whole atmosphere of the soul sanctum says only one thing

@@dub7122 There's also the sad implications of the spells you can acquire in the Sanctum. After you get Desolate Dive and return to the Ancestral Mound, the Snail Shaman who gave you Vengeful Spirit comments that Desolate Dive reminds him of his bad-tempered third uncle, meaning the Soul Master first got ahold of said uncle in order to force it out of him and use it in the first place. Then when you beat the second Soul Warrior behind the Elegant Door, there's ANOTHER Snail Shaman hooked up to machines, and it cries out and disappears to give you the Shade Soul.
Something tells me those two were far from the only Snail Shamans to be kidnapped and experimented on by the scholars in the Sanctum. Maybe the one in the Crystallized Mound (the fourth aunt of the one in the Ancestral Mound) sealed herself in crystal to avoid being taken.

I ventured in on my first playthrough. And instantly regretted it.
Hello minos prime :3
Much like Sealed Vessel, this theme also seems to tell a story
The intro arpeggio plants Ab major in my head rather then C minor, which in turn exudes this feeling of beauty and wonder instead of creepy. To me, this reflects the wonder and beauty of eternal life, which was one of the goals of the scholars, and as the C sets in, changing it to C minor, it seems to induce desire, that want for eternal life. Or perhaps to stave off the infection?
Either way, with their goals in mind, it switches to F minor, almost as if to say: _"There has to be a way to achieve it"_
The Ab chord once again reflects the beauty of immortality, and the Eb seems to bring us back to their desire, while also adding desperation to it. The return to the F minor chord plays as they start brainstorming, and as we land on the G chord, they settle on their brutal, horrifying plan.
The full organ starts at 0:43 as they follow through with their plan, stealing the soul of others and injecting it right into themselves.
And the shifting arpeggios in the background seem the change as their plan appears to work more and more,
The key change at 1:40 seems to invoke melancholy. Perhaps some slight regret or guilt? I can imagine the soul master late at night at his work desk, while everyone else is asleep, silently crying over the crimes he committed, but still working to progress.
But then at 1:58, it's all revealed, and all for nothing. All the lives lost, the soul totems that were stolen, even the kidnapped snail shaman, all that for nothing. The plan was a failure from the very start. Now they're all infected, moving about their old sanctum like slugs, knowing that their plan failed and they never succeeded.
This needs so many more likes
What about part 2 the battle theme?

@@fancyshoes002 That´s just madness. The infection has take total control of each and every single one of the members of the sanctum, including the master himself. Now they don´t have a will to break free. A voice to cry suffering. They only thing they have in mind is kill.
Kill the empty one.
And they´ll do whataver it takes to achieve it.
Funny words, magic man
3:10 The slightly off-beat notes help convey the true horror of what you're fighting against. This place used to be home to those who studied soul, only to be corrupted, disfigured, amalgamated into what you see in the fights with Soul Master and Soul Tyrant. They played with death and this is the result.
The track of the Soul Sactum perfectly conveys the feeling of the place. The creepy mysterious atmosphere, the enemies, the events that transpired there. All wrapped up in a creepy organ piece topped off with an epic orchestral boss theme. Perfection.
The fact that it has the melody of the city of tears put in a completely different context to give a completely different feeling is so cool
the sound of losing your 1000 geo for the third time
knowing the lore of this place, it reminds me of the true lab (undertale)
True, and in getting all of the endings the story for both of them is similar, trying to hear yes the power inside of love bodies.
Soul Sanctum reminds me only one thing(or two) - Healing Church/School of Mensis from Bloodborne. Both Soul Sanctum and Healing Church are groups of scholars who wanted to ascend by consuming supernatural substance but it lead them only to suffering of them and others. And like in case of School of Mensis Soul Sanctum leader was also obsessed with their goal, went mad and after death became imprisioned in dream world.
Ah yes, melted bodies that shouldn’t be alive. I’ve seen that twice now

Ah, what a calm-yet-sinister track. The second part really conveys that “I’m constantly running from at least 3 Soul Twisters at all time, walking into one room that I haven’t explored yet, then going all the way back to the bench to update the map, then maybe going back for another room, repeat process, then getting my butt kicked by Soul Master despite having Shade Soul, Abyss Shriek, Coiled Nail, a handful of useful charms, and literally 50 hours of experience. This song hits very similar to the Dungeon Theme of NES Zelda. This was one of my favourite locations in Hollow Knight.
Omg yes. I was waiting for someone to point it out
whoa, you're right!
Absolutely. I always thought this sounded similar to the Dungeon theme of NES Zelda
I think its a Pokémon mystery dungeon theme
This was the first hollow knight song I was introduced to, and remains my favorite Hollow Knight song.
I love this track so much
this is honestly the bit i fell in love with the game. I was kinda under equipped and I hadn't properly developed mechanics for this. I remember everything felt so scary and dangerous in here, I remember spending so long just getting past the soul warrior, thinking this was the end game. Good times.
This reminds me of the Zelda 1 dungeon theme, especially at 1:11. Also, I can't be the only one that struggled with the Soul Master fight, right?
You're not
I just beat him for the first time last night, and it probably took me 20+ tries to finish that little bugger off. Especially when the battle *kept going*! At first I was scared of going all the way through the Sanctum again, but then the Soul Twisters just got annoying. Muscle memory for the win.
the progression and a lot of areas of the song are almost identical, so I can't help but think maybe someone at Team Cherry is a Zelda enjoyer themselves, even if they didn't realize the similarity to the song when they made it!
I also get old school Zelda vibes from this song
No, you're not the only one that struggled with soul master
Trying to set up context for each hollow knight song in this playlist before the song ends:
Something about this place makes you feel unwelcome. As if something is watching you. You hear unnatural sounds all around you, and the blast of pure energy being released and hurtled towards you startles you out of your trance. You shudder at what must have been done to gain this kind of power. Surely something terrible. Like getting absorbed into a book with no end. A desperate attempt to finish something whos end doesnt exist.
I'll never forget my first playthrough. I didn't even finish it yet but exploring and discovering all places, although sometimes afraid, is a one-time memory. I can't wait for Silksong
3:23 I like how this part is just so menacing
My whole experience was... interesting.
If I recall correctly it started with a small boss, or perhaps one of the soul twisters. I at least thought it was a boss.
Beating the surprisingly easy boss and moving forward and suddenly it appears again. Beating it and another one appears later.
It was honestly a really fun concept that I really loved. A boss that you beat that suddenly just appears again later out of nowhere, out of the boss room as if trying to chase you.
And after that you face the so called boss that you beat over and over with it coming back each time. But this time at full power and kind of a true form.
If was amazing...
And later I discovered that those things that kept coming back were really just different and separate enemies from one another. And the big one is the master.
I was disappointed, my favourite boss and I love the place, but can still feel disappointed that what I felt like happening wasn't really the case.
same
Don’t forget the most important part. The echoes that have occurred for an untold millennia in a language foreign to the bugs of Hallownest. The ancient cries bearing the message,
“When will Silksong release?”
It sounds like mixture of vibes of church and heavily cemetery gives while it slowly turns into combat and madness theme
