The F40 revolutionized car design like nothing else in time. Both sides of the pond. So many newer people reviewing cars literally have no idea how much the F40 birthed the cars they're giving nothing but loves to.
The ultimate! Was then and still is. The outrageous back wing works because it's actually an understatement of the car itself.
Why compare the 2, when one is obviously so much older, and wasn't build for the same purpose as the F40. Please bring on the 9five9 we can never get enough of these 2 super Heros!

doalwa Its a big go kart with wings, a lot of flair, lovely engine, and a lot of pedigree. The F40 has that ugly squary look but that makes it even more unique and beautiful in the end. Its incredible how the fact of being what it is changes our perception to its beauty. Like Matterazi said, if it doesnt perform like it does people would not love it. But being the faster and beastier makes it even more special. Some people say that it seems to have more than 1000hp than the 480hp announced. Probably due to power to weight ratio. Have in mind that it weighs 1100kg in a very large car with very large tyres.

@@fernandofragoso4118 I'd disagree with your post. The F40 are squarish in a classic antique way and that is a proven timeless beauty. Look at antique marble temples and columns, it's all square but the proportion are just right. The F40 is probably the most beautiful looking sportscar ever.

***** you're fried, this broke way more ground than an f1 furthermore, the italian approach to cars is way more passionate than any other car building nation. in italy (and I'm italian) its not a car, its a moving piece of art, the art work is in the craftsmanship and the design and thats why makes it special. the f1 was just built to be a fast car

Yes i like his personality much better than **cough** Chris, I can't stand that monkys antics behind the wheel but watch Chris video driving the F40, just woaw his oversteering of the F40 was absolute perfection driving. Here Tiff seems not a good and confident enough driver to push the F40 to that level.

The F40's rival wasn't the Countach, it had already been out for a few years, and I'm guessing Ferrari already knew it wasn't that good. The car the F40 had to beat was the Porsche 959.

+mermaltim68 While I know what you mean by that (I still remember my Road N Track mag that pitted the two head to head... boyhood wetdreams) but because the F40 was released some 3 years before the Diablo, and the F40 was nearing the end of it's life cycle production wise, that's why he said the Countach 5000qv was the rival. Might have been better to say the Porsche 959 as the rival, but lets face it, when you say rival and Ferrari you only think Lamborghini.

Every supercar should be made like the Ferrari F40 or the McLaren F1. Manual transmission, lightweight, RWD, and no driver assists. Just a pure raw element of its own. They say that you shouldn't meet your heroes. But the F40 is different. It is one of the only cars that you will not be disappointed when you meet it or driven it.
The Ferrari F40 is the best-all-time-car or that is my opinion, yours?

He drives like that for show. If he drove properly mixed with their editing it would be boring as hell.
Actually altough i don't like his roller coster and fake shouts and talks behind the wheel, chris harris drove the F40 the best. You can see him oversteering so perfectly in the entire curve, something tiff is unable to do and looks frisky and lacking in his own driving skills here. Let's not talk about Clarkson.

The QV came out in 1985 and was at the end of its life cycle. A 288 Gto would be a fairer comparison which came out in 1984.

Theres a couple of problems with getting old cars built again. Firstly is the costs of re-tooling for manufacture. If cars a getting refurbished it might just be with a stock of spares. But assuming you had unlimited funds and made it worth their while, even if they built you a car you might not be able to legally register it as it would not comply with safety and emissions standards today. But hey, if i was that rich id have it as a track car for sure. if only.
+TheBeardedMan if they did remake the f40, it wouldnt be street legal. for one, the headlights are too low. in the 90s they made a rule where headlights had to be a certain height. thats one of the reasons why so many older cars have flip up headlights so that they are higher

+TheBeardedMan Even if the street legality of a modern day F40 was not a problem I don't think Ferrari would do that to its customers. Ferrari is aware that many of their buyers are actually investors and if the market was flooded with aditional F40's their prices would fall and they would have a lot of dissapointed loyal customers.
The same thing is with the luxury watches. Rolex and especially other more luxurious brands produce only limited amounts of their watches so if you buy one it does not lose value.
of the 27 thousand people who've watched this, I really doubt there is even one that will buy a f40.

Well now that we have the formalities dispensed with...
All Lotus would have to do is make a Hennessy Elise with half the power of the US version, presto one F40 killer. What will Ferrari do? I know how about a four door F12 or maybe a hybrid instead. Lotus seems to be the only company around that can make a car that is light enough. So what do you think is or will be the successor to the F40? Doesn't have to be Italian or made by Ferrari in my book.

I can't stand Jeremy Clarkson and his terrible jokes, not to mention he is always making a buffoon of himself catching the wrong attention. Tiff he is a racer, years of experience driving super-cars, has a approachable fun way of presenting on tv. Top Gear would so much be better if they got rid of Jeremy and brought back Tiff, otherwise fifth gear should stay as it is very enjoyable to watch!
Fifth gear is for people who want information about cars delivered expertly and answering all the little questions we should know.
Top Gear is for petrol head hooligans who love cars for the fun they provide. Personally i enjoy both. And why not enjoy both? They are both great for different reasons.
Why do people have to categorize things and/or people and box them up in neat little packages of what they like and dislike. This video was simply about the incredible F40 yet the only thing you came away with was the need to make a moaning negative comment about a totally unrelated topic.

The Diablo is what I remember as a kid being the Lamborghini equivalent of the F40. 202mph for Diablo & 201mph for F40....

This is why I'm not really interested in cars. They just don't build them properly anymore. This truly is one of the last proper cars. The KTM X-Bow would be one, if it had a roof.
If you had purchased one of these when the video aired, almost 12 years ago, even for absolute top dollar, you'd have quadrupled your 'investment' at the very least, some people have seen appreciation in the 8-12 x range.

Good advice back then, selling for over 1 mil US today. F40's DO NOT have rubber fuel cells, and do not need to be replaced every 10 years, shame on whoever told you this... Love your enthusiasm for the car, I feel the same way...

The Countach is still better by the looks and design. Just stunning. I'd take it over the F40 anytime.
The F40 was not only faster and better than the Countach.............It's also better and faster than the later F50 and Diablo.....

I don't agree that the Countach was a rival to the F40. The Countach was more a rival to the Testarossa. They were larger and heavier more like GT cars. The Porsche 959 would be a more appropriate rival for the F40 with both being more race oriented.
im a big ferrari fan born into the passion for the brand, but i love lamborghinis. theres something about a lambo that other don't have, if i couldn't get an f40 or a 288 my next choice would be a countach. and i would only buy an analogue super car if i had the money because they're still super car fast and the drive is way more involving and because of that they're plenty fast enough. by adding all these computer systems they're replacing the involvement of driving with sheer speed, theres nothing wrong with that but id rather have an analogue car. but at the same time i find ferraris and lamborghinis are not comparable, the lambo is all about raw power, nothing else matters. its built to go fast and it executes what it was designed to do perfectly, the ferrari is a raw racing car experience, specifically the italian racing car experience.

The only one I saw ,years ago ,had to stop at each traffic lights and restart when people stopped blocking the road while taking photos of it :)

They are worth at least 1 million dollars now. Some of the best kept one's with a great history of famous owners or one's that have raced can be worth up to 2 million.

Some people have got about 600 hours by increasing the boost and with that power and its lightweight can only imagine.
scan the parts and 3D print them. Build an brand new one and call it the F40R !!! Yes. With current day scan and print, we should be able to build this car new for around 50k !! Make it electric power!! YES!!!

Well my friend, you can carry on with your dream imo, but in the end, having 1 million dolar of spare money to spend on a not-so-easy to find car is not so achievable in the average person life. If I ever have the money I would definetly go for the f40 also.
