When younger gen kids see this it does NOT have the same impact it had on me when i was younger. When i saw EVH at the Philadelphia spectrum in 1978 it was life changing! NO ONE was playing like him! He was UNREAL to me and i remember going home after that show and playing my guitar all night!

Saw them at the LA Forum on the Diver Down tour in '82. Life changing event. Dave seemed 20 ft tall. Nobody could touch them in the early days. Nobody!!
What is so surreal to me is that this is Eddie Van Halen's debut on the big stage and out in front with the big boys- Black Sabbath. To me- Eddie Vam Halen sounds just like a superhero right out of the comic-books. To be able to see Eddie play what he was playing back in 1978 just sounds amazingly frightening to me. No one was playing like this back in 1978! With the musical ear I have now, I can comprehend what it's all about and what he is playing- but back in 1978 when I was just a kid- this -is just amazing. This is what we call- "an oral explosion for all senses"..@14:20 that's when the brain begins to melt. Imagine seeing and hearing this for the first time back in 1978..Wholy Mooly

Truly the Greatest Guitarist EVER, in the Greatest American Rock Band ever and a legacy with a family history that will never be topped. 3 people named Van Halen, with the greatest frontman in history. It's cool to realize I was just over 3 months old living within about 5 miles of this venue when this show occurred...my '96 high school grad was in the same venue so I'd guess I walked across the same area as their stage nearly 18 years later.
Ain't Talkin' bout love! Roth smashes all other rock singers at this time, he could go off script, out of the safe zone. He wasn't afraid to rough it up, that's where the true magic was with the Mighty Van Halen band. They were confident enough to throw away the training wheels that made other bands sound stagnant, stiff. A live show ought to be.........A live show!!!!!!! Roth being a natural leader, led the band into stardom. He knew there was more to it than just the music, this is Rock n' Roll chemistry at it's finest! obviously Eddie and the rest are as good as it get's on their instruments but, they needed the one and only Roth to shine that light on that greatness. And yes here Eddie Trunk, Roth sounds as good as the record, those screams aren't studio magic, the lyrics, the stage presence, This Van Halen is unmatched to this day!
My older brother turned me on to Van Halen at a very young age. While other bands were/are great, none of them could touch the energy these guys had. Hearing the intro to Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love influenced me to start playing guitar!

I was at that show and for those of you that said how lucky Sabbath was to have VH pulling a crowd for them your wrong. no one knew who VH was at that point they had not even hit the radio in Fresno yet don't get me wrong we was impressed but they didn't draw the crowd Sabbath did that on their own
I saw this tour in Dallas and I knew who Van Halen was.... Already had the first album because of local radio playing it. They opened for Black Sabbath and blew them away! Ozzy plodding around the stage clapping his hands over his head was a real letdown after seeing this performance. Great show but I had seen Led Zeppelin the year before as my second ever concert and it was hard to match that. Early VH was good but they couldn't quite hold a candle to the magic and mystique that was LZ at the time....

Zep played 4 hours without an opening act the night Keith Moon came up on stage with Bonham's drum solo. There was just something very huge about Zep's presence in an arena and how they brought the mystique of their amazing music and recorded history with them along with being from England. Van Halen was still just a flashy guitar oriented party band that could always entertain a new audience and untouchable in their own way compared with peers of their own age. They were nothing less than amazing to new ears.. o;)
To think Randy Rhoads was saving Ozzy Osbourne's career just one year later but here Black Sabbath were being roasted alive must've been humiliating....
Bottom line, who cares who blew who offstage. JUst tink of the bills: KISS open for Sabbath, VH open for Sabbath. Saw them BLOW Black Sabbath off the stage in the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Jacksonville Florida in 78 and again 8 months later after the release of their Van Halen II album in 1979 in Jacksonville only that time headlining at the Civic Auditorium...they crushed it ! Both shows were freaking awesome.
Roth and Eddie had great chemistry. This is the REAL VH. Every other VH is a weak imitation. Roth was the perfect counter part to Eddie. You need a giant showman like Roth to complement Eddie. Sammy sort of watered down Eddie. Roth brought out Eddies best. He sort of bugged Eddie, but their edgy relationship translated well musically. Roth seemed to be constantly pushing Eddie to the next level.
they'd hate to admit it, but that's why they both came back and played with each other despite the fact that they both can't stand one another. cuz when they're on, it's musical bliss. and they know it.

Just a quick FYI, this footage is from the September 22, 1978 show in Fresno at Selland. It is widely reported that Van Halen did play 1/28/78 in Fresno, and also 3 dates in February, there is no footage and no pics of these gigs. The black/white pants Dave is wearing in this video, and the white shirt Ed is wearing, they began wearing on March 3, 1978 when the first tour started with Journey. If this video were from a gig on 1/28/78, Dave would have most likely been wearing his black leather pants, and Ed would have been wearing his black shirt with white stripes, as they did for their 12/30/78 and 12/31/78 shows at the Whiskey.

the date is wrong. they didn't play on a tour opening for anybody 1/28/78. they were still doing an occasional gig in LA, preparing to go on the Journey/Montrose tour. the album came out in early march/end of feb.. they didn't join Journey/Montrose in Chicago until end of Feb/'78.. this concert was later that year.. and yes nobody wants to go on next. The energy level and entertainment factor is amazing. It's so f'ing exciting. purposely. They understood the concert is a huge party. If you want sedate perfect playing "go to the philharmonic. this is rock n roll."

@@theconstruct77 I"ve heard all that Hendrix stuff.....not even in the same room with Eddie VH........Eddie took it to a whole other planet when he hit the scene. Changed rock guitar more than any other player in history. Then Yngwie did it again for heavy metal guitarists in the early 80's.

the date is wrong. they didn't play on a tour opening for anybody 1/28/78. they were still doing an occasional gig in LA, preparing to go on the Journey/Montrose tour. the album came out in early march/end of feb.. they didn't join Journey/Montrose in Chicago until end of Feb/'78.. this concert was later that year.. and yes nobody wants to go on next. The energy level and entertainment factor is amazing. It's so f'ing exciting. purposely. They understood the concert is a huge party. If you want sedate perfect playing "go to the philharmonic. this is rock n roll."
