    Caught my first fluke on live mummichog. My girlfriend was standing next to me asking how we do this, being a new type of fishing for us, and I explained while casting “you’ll let the Carolina rig's sinker go down, then pull the line semi-taut, then you’ll feel something weird or slack with the line when there’s a bite (actually starts happening)… ???just like this??? And set the hook like THIS!! (Fish is on)"

    Great video! I haven’t fished with killies in years. The fluking has been so slow this year. Eastern N. Shore LI. I think mainly due to water clarity. I’m going to give this a shot this week. Thanks!

    Live killies outfished gulp 3:1 on Saturday at this same spot. Well, close to this spot. Not only did the killies outfish, they got the bigger fish while jerk shads caught all shorts. Fish seemed generally lethargic so maybe the rain, east wind, and 59 degree temps had something to do with it. Likely an anomaly, but in my view worth noting.

    • @CookingandFishing
      @CookingandFishing  Месяц назад +1

      It could seem that way early season in sub 60F water - I mean no offense saying this but it does matter how you're jigging that gulp. My experience is once you get that cold water technique down the average size is night and day vs killies. Ofc it's fishing so many exceptions to every rule.

      I just moved to the VA Beach area and I was surprised how cheap killies are here. I think they're $3 a dozen. And they're probably easy to catch in a minnow trap. I catch them in a cast net.

    Roger. Have you experimented with the 7” jerk shad? They are hard to come by in a smaller package. I can only seem to find them in a pint size.

    • @CookingandFishing
      @CookingandFishing  Год назад +1

      The 7" JS was my go to Ambrose bait back in the day - they were discontinued and now brought back. Not a bait I use from shore, you need different gear just to throw it, the thing weighs over an oz alone iirc - the 6" is perfect.

      @@CookingandFishing I actually want to try it out from the boats in deeper depths , with a single jig head. I think it would be killer. Like you said , Ambrose rips 👍🏼

    good content as usual...im sure u have used gulp shrimp at sumpoint..reason i mention it is because i fish alot of the same areas you do and i have one spot in particular that i fish alot and that spot is the only place ive fished where early season with hardly any bait around that new penny color gulp shrimp on your typical single jig has just punished fluke! those magical days if you didnt have gulp shrimp dont bother fishing..ive experimented alot on those days by using other forms of gulp and not even close to the hookup ratio..ive only had a handful of those days but my goodness the bite on those days with the rite conditions was just ridiculous..like triple digit numbers ridiculous which im sure people who read this are gonna say bullshit but im sure you know those kinda days are possible with rite equipment and technique..this yr its been on fire thank god compared to last yr for me anyway..

    Thank you for your content.We boat fish a lot Eastern Long Island bays. Wind with tide incoming or outgoing morning is my favorite conditions. My wife likes squid spearing standard fluke rig, We both fish shimano twin powers with Skinner, Dark matter rods 15 pound braid 20 pound leader mono . I would like your opinion.I fish, both 5inch gulp bucktail on hi lo and 4inch on teaser with accurist on a 2nd jig bounce rod. On the spinner Ill use single w jig strip and spearing. This year shes high hook w a 6 pound 26 in. . I've got one 23 in. 3.5 lb. The ratio of keepers to shorts is about 20: 1 this year for us.. What is your view on best rig bait for Eastern Long Island Bays to increase keeper ratio with our rods? I also fish high low with the bucktail and teaser top or straight single wgulp. I think I know the answer but I find sometimes the big ones come up and grab the teaser. Thank you

    I still use live bait depending on the situation. Sometimes crowds will prevent you from really working the Gulp properly so I'll adapt.
    I mentioned this in another video but I still have an issue with the Gulp when the bait is so thick in the water that you can walk on it. I have to give up, net the live bait and I will slay them that way. Also I will say live mullet can be killer in Sept at times.
    That said Jerkshad Gulp is best by far overall for weeding out small fish.

      My friends think I’m nuts when I told them about a trip close to an inlet where I saw birds diving and when I got closer there were fluke chasing bait to the surface like blues or bass. It wasn’t just a few fish but a few dozen. As I watched in awe I quickly grabbed my stick and made a few casts in and around the blitz but they didn’t want to hit my bucktail and before I could change lures it was over! In all my 55 years worth of angling I have never seen fluke blitz like this and chase the bait to the top especially when the water in that particular area was between 15-25 foot deep!

    Drop-shot with killies! I would be stressed out about gut hooking them-that’s why I don’t enjoy wet fly fishing for trout. I guess with fluke you have a window to set the hook shallow…still it would stress me out. Great video though

    Hi Roger,another great vid. Question. I fish off a jetty where it’s at least 10-20ft deep. When it rips, it super hard to even a keep a half ounce down. Unfortunately the Gammy round jig only tops out at 3/8. Any recs for ball style jigs in 1 oz?
