    Honestly, if I got my neck snapped by an 8ft, 350 lbs grown alien man on a foreign planet at the age of like 4 or 5, I'd retire to study bugs also. This is why Gohan is still my favorite character. As a child, he was kinda forced to grow up and become a warrior to protect his loved ones and the innocent, getting beaten and bloodied by people way above his age and weight class from elite soldiers to weaponized killing machines. Then, there was a point where Gohan was the strongest and took on the responsibility of guarding the planet, but he chose to do it his own way by becoming the Great Saiyaman so he can study as himself in piece. Finally, we come to Super, where Gohan is living his best life with his family. He's able to live the life he wants to live comfortably and without fear that he and his family are in danger because he can rely on and trust his dad to be there for him, but he also isn't afraid to step up and fight when he's needed. This is why I never understood the whole "He fell off" topic. Gohan didn't fall off, he grew up, he went to school cause he wanted to go to school. He's studying bugs because he wants to study bugs, and he stopped fighting because he never liked fighting to begin with. Hell, no one realized that Gohan needed glasses until after he graduated high school. Gohan will remain my favorite character because he forged his own path and chose what he wanted to be. Chichi pushed him and helped him towards his goals, Goku understood and supported his dreams, and Piccolo is a really cool uncle. Gohan never fell off. He soared above expectations.Sorry for the rant.

    Real shit about ChiChi. That was always the joke since ChiChi was introduced was that she was hyperemotional and jumped to conclusions, having said that…the first time she let Goku and Gohan leave the house and go see his friends Goku is murdered and Gohan is kidnapped by the guy that just tried to murder her husband for a year and left to fend for himself out in the wilderness. When Goku returns to life Gohan is nearly killed, Goku is nearly killed and immediately and then they’re just like bye Mom were going to space OH SHIT THE PLANET IS BLOWING UP…and Goku is probably dead again. Chi Chi is honestly low key the most relatable person in the show.

    To add to the Chi-Chi point, I believe it really helps her character when you understand that she's the equivalent to a country bumpkin. She wants this idealized image for her family that, for the comedy in the series, she hardly ever gets. She wants her son to be a rich scholar and her husband to be a hard working man because that's what she thinks families are *supposed* to do. Anything out of that mold upsets her greatly, like her son and husband dying their hair yellow like delinquents typically did in Japan.
    And it's nice to see her eventually chill out after accepting that her family just ain't normal.

      Ngl idk if that even works. I mean she was living in a castle till she was a teenager. But when you look at what Gohan was going through and at the context of being a parent, Chi Chi's behavior was more than warranted. When you look at the difference between the settings around Gohan's childhood vs Goten's, it makes sense why she mellowed out some (certainly not because hes the 2nd son or whatever)

    • @PatlandOneTwoThreeFourFive
      @PatlandOneTwoThreeFourFive Месяц назад +10

      @@thelightspeeddash6329 Her behavior is definitely warranted, no disagreement there.
      I just find her to be a comedic stereotype of the country bumpkin trope because of her lack of formal education, grand visions for her children and farming lifestyle. Her living in a castle doesn't make her exempt from the trope.
      It's a common idea that people who grew up in the countryside want their children to be successful by the ideas of "the big city." Instead of asking what Gohan wants, she pushes that idea into him because that's what she thinks is best for the family. Why does she think that way? Because she could believe that that's what big happy families are supposed to be like.
      I just think Toriyama took that idea and made her a gag that works in both comedy and realism since it makes sense that a mother would hate all the violence around her son, but that's just the name of the show so it's unavoidable.

    One of the Broly theories that I’ve heard is that Broly is basically jealous. Both Goku and Broly are based on Sun Wukong from Journey to the West, Goku inheriting Wukong’s positive traits, his peaceful nature from the end of the story, and items, the power pole and the flying nimbus, while Broly inherited Wukong’s negative traits, Wukong’s rage, and items, the control headband. Also, while Goku, a weak, low class Saiyan received a peaceful life on earth, Broly, the strongest Saiyan(at that time) lived a life of pure suffering. And to top it all off Kakarot, that low class warrior with the insolence to cry over his circumstances, is now the only one who can rival Broly, and Broly can’t stand it.

  • @ferndiesel
    @ferndiesel Месяц назад +54

    To add to the Chichi and Gohan points:
    Gohan's first encounter with violence was as a toddler, getting kidnapped, trying to save your dad while still not understanding what's going on, and next thing you know, your dad is dead and you're off to live and grow up with a man you'd never met before this traumatic event. It's incredible Gohan could even fight at all.
    And then imagine all this happens to your first born son at such a young age!?
    AND THEN THE NEXT TIME YOU SEE HIM AFTER A YEAR, YOU FIND HIM UNCONSCIOUS, BEAT UP AND NAKED?? Dawg, someone would have to pay lmfao
    That said, it's totally understandable why Gohan and Chichi aren't huge on Gohan fighting. It was never really something Gohan was able to enjoy, more like preparation for traumatic events.
    Also, one of my favorite details about Vegeta's sacrifice in the Buu arc is him doing this full well that he's going hell and there's no wishing him back. He accepts that he can't be redeemed and decides to make that decision for the people he loves anyway.

      I would go further than that, Dragonball has a good plot. While the details can be what gets things muddled, there is a distinct narrative through-line in each of the arcs and Toriyama managed to utilize thematic/idealized characterization (making a character a representation of the themes or ideology) seldom breaking a character's established traits and personality.
      Goku alone has been the representative of many themes through the entire original run, and I don't think anyone would ever say Goku stopped being in-character. That is a skill that even some of the greatest writers in history could never accomplish. You typically only see a writer do this with either a single completed work or a completed works that are only published after all works are completed, Toriyama did this in a fast-paced environment (manga), for many years, in an incomplete work (meaning it was ongoing), and did it for 519 chapters.
      I would say Toriyama's flaws are nothing compared to his actual writing prowess.

      Yeah I think that is true as well cause Yamcha only stared hanging out with other female partners after having an falling out with bulma during his early days of his Titans league baseball career during the saiyan saga and post into the later arcs so for the most part Yamcha was pretty faithful overall, which is kinda crazy cause Yamcha was there for her when she wanted too find a boyfriend back in their teen days but when Yamcha just wanted bulma too come see one of his baseball games she ultimately didn’t ended up deciding to go which is kinda ehh and plus when those groupies would come around him when he would originally get fame as an handsome martial artist from the budokai tenkaichi events he would always been shown and stated too avoid them while being in a active relationship with bulma at the capsule corp. headquarters residence so future bulma was just overreacting by calling Yamcha a playing the field type of guy because of their argument situations where it looked like Yamcha was being unfaithful to her when in reality he wasn’t in fact this trope played out a lot in O.G. Even if he could potentially save the planet, I understand she'd rather leave it to Goku and his friends as it's their duty but just leave her baby out of it, that seems fair.
    Mind you, I like Gohan as a fighter, I think he's cool. But it would be weird if Chi chi never put up an argument about her son fighting in all these Death Tournaments

    I completely agree at first I wasn't a fan of Chi Chi. But as I got older I realize she just want what's best for her son.
    Vegeta getting on Gohan for me was valid. Because it this point the planet is at risk. Gohan just defeat Cell where you would think Gohan would understand and learn to take things seriously. But instead Gohan is just playing around as well him slacking off on his training knowing good in well he needs to train to not only to stay stronger but to keep his planet safe from threats.
    I agree Vegeta development from the moment of his debut in DBZ to the end was the best. I was just disappointmented that his sacrifice against Buu was wasted.
    This is my first time hearing the Broly conspiracy. Every story is gonna have a plothole. As long as the story has more positive and negative. It all good. Writers aren't perfect. i think there was potential for a hella deep character motivation w Broly that they just totally bungled bc it was a movie plot... like, i think the idea was that he was intimidated by Goku's confidence and strong cry, despite being of low power level and low birth... meanwhile he's got all the power and higher status, but is too scared to make a peep... kinda reminds me of how a lil dog can chase a big dog away if it's just got the guts to confront it, bc the big dog isn't expecting it... idk there's so much cool commentary on class and hierarchies that could have been involved w his character, i feel like someone working on it was really tryna make it deep and it just got ruined somehow. funny how it ended up being kinda the epitome of what dbz haters thought the whole show was, all flashy form, muscles and powers, and no substance...
      don't get me wrong, i fuckin love that movie too, the animation is SOOOOO gorgeous, honestly peak for me. the music was tops too, i mean it's kinda butt rock nu metal stuff but you can't say it doesn't fit the content perfectly. and there's actually some good writing... Vegeta getting utterly fooled by Paragus appealing to his ego, and then just fucking collapsing into a stuttering mess when he witnesses real power, is fuckin GOLDEN, classic Vegeta getting shown up plot. and Broly had some good lines too!! like there's one part where Goku says somethin like 'hey, how about giving us a little mercy?!' in that tone where he's tryna be humorous, to deal with the fact that they're probably all about to be murdered by this psycho... and Broly responds 'is that another word for coffin?' in the most sinister voice as he just blastin them away... aaaaaahhh i don't care what anyone say, that movie was a DAMN good time

At no point before the android saga is Yamcha shown or even implied to be a cheater (Bulma's past accusations of this were originally meant to be her simply being irrational). If anything, Bulma was consistently shown be a lot hornier than Yamcha. Seriously, if you told me one of these people cheated on the other, I would have to assume it was Bulma, always lusting over other men and barely keeping it in her pants. Then, she would have the nerve to get all bitchy when another woman paid Yamcha the slightest bit of attention. Awesome vid. You nailed it. Dbz hits a lot different after growing up and facing adversity. The buu saga was more about reprising the original sayain saga. Vegeta turning back to evil crushed me. His fight there woth goku was just brutal and so deep. His atonement and then finally accepting goku as a true friend and working together to defeat buu is sayain pride redefined. That thumbs up they share is just everything. Vegeta being too proud and angry to admit defeat against buu when goku was charging the spirit bomb was incredible. I feel that would have been a perfect time for him to go ssj3. I always got mad at gohan haters. His power comes when he needs it the most. He doesn't want to be a fighter, but when he's pushed too far, his power just explodes. Sure, he could and probably should train more, but his power can always just jump to where it needs to be. I think there are too many people arguing about could “Goku beat ..” or the “Super vs GT”. They are just missing the point. It’s those we cherish at the end of the day that make us strong. It’s why I think the message of the final arc of each section after Piccolo Jr was showing that being the strongest means nothing with out those around you. It’s why I think Kid Buu, Omega Shenron, and Anime Jiren are some of the best versions of that message. Cause no matter how much I can bench press my family and friends is what’s giving me strength to stay in the fight(life).

    On the note of Gohan and Chi chi, I feel like a lot of people who complain about their writing forget the fact that *Gohan* wants to be a scholar. Yes, it can be interpreted that he's just parroting Chi chi's words in the beginning of the show, but you can so clearly see his passion for his studies later on. And the entirety of the Android saga was centered around Gohan not wanting to fight. In the terrible apocalyptic future the Androids created, Gohan is a fighter because he has no other choice. In the peaceful world created by Cell and the Android's defeat, Gohan becomes a scholar as he always wanted from the very beginning. Chi Chi is just supporting Gohan in pursuing his dreams to the best of her ability, and rightfully gets mad at Goku for constantly trying to derail that.
    And on that note, this is also why Gohan seems like such a terrible father in Super Hero. He *does* have Goku's passion, it's just focused on his studies rather than training. He treats his studies the exact same way that Goku treats his training.
    It's kind of crazy how little the fandom actually tries to understand the show and its characters. So many people say they did Gohan dirty, but they really just want Gohan to be Goku, and we already have Goku.

    Another good thing about Hercule/Mr. Satan taking all the credit is that it keeps the attention away from Goku and the others. It is impressive how he's able to fool everyone, but then again it does seem like a lot of people (with some notable exceptions) seem to have forgotten when shooting Kamehameha Waves, Dodon Rays, and Spirit Balls were a thing back then. Though now that I think about it, were those tournaments televised?
    I kind of side of with the first theory about Broly. IIRC, he had his eyes shut and all he could hear was Goku crying. Then he gets picked up by his tail, which is extremely painful for saiyans, stabbed, then tossed aside to die with Paragus. I think he associates the pain he experienced with the crying. I do wonder alongside that power, is why he became so unstable.
    Considering Toriyama was writing and drawing Dragon Ball weekly for 11 years, I'd be honestly surprised if there wasn't any plot holes. Same goes for most mangaka who had to work in similar conditions. The manga industry is brutal. What we got from Toriyama, while not perfect, is still a fantastic series and I'm glad I grew up watching the series.

    aight now in defense of the Yamcha thing, he cant talk to women. He is physically incapable of cheating on Bulma and it was always a weird reason for Bulma to leave him.
    And Broly's reason was never actually stated in the movie. No one says that the reason for hhis rage was Goku crying

      @@GiveMeAReason2 if we dont take filler into account we actively dont see him with girls that he himself are firting with. And is it cheating on Bulma if he wants to meet with women post break up? Is the man not alowed to move on? Anyway the only time we hear about some woman its mentioned he has a gf in the cell saga (we never see her let alone know if its the so called Mistress that caused the break up, if hes such a womanizer... he has ony 1 gf) and when gohan apologized to yamcha about the necklace wish Yamcha goes on to say he was joking. If his joke was to hide he was cheating why in earth would he say he needed a neckalce for a gf in the first palce (plus no one responded negatively about his new gf).
      Then theres the interview Toriyama has i think during Super's early run where he states Yamcha is actually *still* afraid of girls, yes still. Not that the fear resurfaced, he aways still had the fear. its so bad he can't keep a job. And then just randomly brings up that Yamcha goes to visit Tien everytime he gets fired or something which like.... Aight...
      If Yamcha cheated i dont think it was a Mistress.
      To add to that going by how DB tends to work with couples, if Yamcha was such a womanizer and ladies man there'd be... tons of proof if you know what I mean.
      my issue with the yamcha cheating shit is the flip flop of it, either commit to the character assination or don't (and even if its not character assassination for Yamcha, it definitely is for Vegeta. theres a reason All 3 VAs were confused about this not just Furuya)

The guy who would have done anything to win and would just merk people. The guy who had at least some great feats like how he stole the Dragon Balls from Frieza right under his nose, and throwing sand in Zarbon's eyes and ripping off Android 19's arms and coercing Android 20/Dr. Gero into a retreat, things like that. I miss that Vegeta.

    Well, Goten and Trunks also end up doing well, even despite their fumbling. But they’re literal children, so it’s still impressive what they accomplish.

      Like SSJ Goku was built up throughout the Saiyan and Namek Sagas where the words "Legendary Super Saiyan" "The Legend" and "The Super Saiyan" keeps getting thrown around.
      Same with SSJ2 Gohan, Where the Saiyan, Namek, and Android/Cell sagas keeps hinting and stating about Gohan's true potential and also the word "A form BEYOND Super Saiyan" is mentioned.
      However, We don't get this build up for SSJ3...

    When I was younger, Ithought Chi Chi was just annoyingly angry, as I grew older and watched Dragonball, I realized that she was a stalker who was angry because the boy she arbitrarily fell in love with didn't conform to what she thought she could turn him into. At least she tried to train Goten once... until she gets freaks out when he went Super Saiyan. Tbh, the Ox King must've warped that woman. She made her bed and it's good when she finally accepts the "sleeping" conditions.
    In Vegeta's case, his rival received a seven-year all-expenses paid trip to the divine training camp, something had to level it out. Even then, the MF'er keeps on managing to bruteforce his way into new transformations without any "Power of Friendship" magic. He already had SS2 by the time Babadi got to him. It's almost like he secretly hid from Toriyama so he could make progress on the down-low.
    Hercules a human without the usual masters with a 180 power level, nuff said.
    Agree with the rest.

    Hercule taking the credit for Cell allows Gohan to have the life he wants to have with his family. He keeps the media off of the Son fam and others. 9:38 theres another theory for brolys hatred that i like. Broly had an insane power level and gave off like a haki where all things weaker would be oppressed, like when frieza walks into a room. But goku having a low power level and lower pressure still cried out fighting against it unwavering. In his entire life of being oppressed by his people and his father the only one to not fear him was kakarot. Saiyans have perfect memories, the only reason why an infant goku wasnt evil was because he had a brain injury, so broly remembers everyone and the only one to consistently stand up to him and make him cry was kakarot. He is the legendary super saiyan the pinnacle of what it means to be a saiyan, the jesus of saiyans, a mythical being embodying all the pride and strength of a mighty warrior race that even the god of destruction didnt want around, and kakarot made him cry.

    • @_NobodySpecial_
      @_NobodySpecial_ 25 дней назад

      Saiyans were a power cult, they had might makes right engraved into their DNA, broly scared the king on a bloodline level. Vegeta, raditz, and nappa had a clear hierarchy vegeta and nappa didn't even care when raditz died and nappa followed what vegeta said. When nappa was useless vegeta threw him away. Vegeta was a high class warrior and kakarot was a pitiful low class wretch, he didn't deserve his respect and it was inconceivable that he could best him. When vegeta saw broly he gave up immediately feeling the same fear that his father felt. As any saiyan should in that situation. But not kakarot, not goku.

    Piccolo's whole character transformation is actually nuts to me when you consider he was the evil side of Kami that was expelled from the body, like Buu did when Hercule nearly died. He went from being a being of evil and malice to being reborn and forming feelings of affection for Gohan up until he fused with Nail. He was a half that became greater than a whole.

  • @freakctc
    @freakctc 20 дней назад

    My personal take on the Broly situation: Here is Broly, strongest at birth, follower to nobody, threat to the royalty of Planet Vegeta. Yet when Kakarott started to cry, he broke Broly's legendary will and made him cry as well. This is the trauma that broke Broly. The fact that he was influenced by another without even trying was devastating. Then to find out it was a low-level warrior on top of that. Hearing Goten's cry was a PTSD flashback and Broly feared the idea of it happening again.
    I'm also sure that Broly felt that his crying was the final reason he was murdered what led him down the road he went. So anything that reminded him of that triggered his anger and dominating personality.

    Chichi remains a pain of a person. Honestly I can't even just excuse her as a protective mother. The girl was fighting people with lethal weapons when she was 11 and fell in love with Goku for being strong and heroic and then she just has a random 180 degrees turn after having Gohan and doesn't even want the kid to train. Even when Gohan gets as old as his father was when he was fighting a literal army she still couldn't accept that the literal fate of humanity might be more important than her kid's studies. She's a ridiculous character. If she remained the same as when she was younger, supporting Goku in bringing out Gohan's potential and defending the world, she would've made so much more sense and would've been a great character.
    I agree about Hercule tho. If you remove all the super powered main characters he IS the strongest man on earth. The guy shows up dragging 3 busses and punching through metal, on top of winning a world tournament when he had to compete with regular people. Hercule is roughly at the same power level as kid Goku at his first tournament, which is already way beyond a regular person and strong enough to fight people with machine guns bare handed. If Hercule was introduced in the story during the original series instead of mid Z he would've been considered a great fighter on par with the main characters. The power scaling made him dirty. lol
    Gohan does what he's meant to do. He does not share his father's drive to fight and get stronger. He always wanted a peaceful life and who can blame him for that? We selfishly, as the audience, want him to live up to his fighting potential so bad because he is Goku's son and we are showed he could be so freaking powerful and we love fights. But Gohan never enjoyed that. He stood up and fought so many times because he had to but he had to endure so much at such a young age the most unrealistic part of the whole story is how he never developed crippling PTSD. I mean, get kidnapped after your father's death and abandoned in a desert with no food or water to fight with literal dinosaurs for survival at the age of 4. In any other story this would've turned into a tragedy with this character being scarred for life if he survived. Less than a year later he had to watch almost everyone he knows getting murdered around him in a death battle, including his stockholm syndrome teacher, while grown ass adults yell at him, a 5 years old to man up and fight these 2 world destroying alien monsters and serial killers knowing if they lose the world is done for including his mother and grandpa. Only a few months later he's on an alien planet fighting an evil army and gets his neck snapped by a giant sadist and barely survive thanks to magical beans.
    He barely gets one year of peace before the world gets threatened of being destroyed by the sickest alien dictator again.
    Right after his dad finally comes back home and when he thinks they might finally go back to a normal life he instead has to train harder than he ever did to prepare for the coming of two extinction class threats. The boy is barely 7 at this time and will be 10 be the time the threats arrive. And this is when his father forces him to train even harder while planning to put the whole worlds fate on his shoulders and forces him into a 24/7 deadly training for a whole year in a place where a normal person would die in seconds and Goku himself couldn't last more than 2 days at Gohan's age.
    All of this while this boy has no drive to fight and just wants to study and play with his animal friends.
    We are all assholes for wanting Gohan to "man up" and fight.

    Back story for Chi chi. Her name itself translates to high level energy. In the original Dragon Ball Chi Chi's father the Ox King lost everything he owned in a big fire and nearly lost his life until Goku saved the day. As children Chi Chi casually asked Goku if he would promise to marry her some day. Goku agreed thinking marriage was some sort of fighting training. Later when they were both adults Chi Chi shows up to the world martial arts tournament to have Goku fulfill his promise, only to realize that has doesn't even recognize her or remember his promise. This makes Chi Chi bitter towards fighting for the rest of the series and onward because she saved herself for Goku and he just ghosted her to become a better fighter. After the world martial arts tournament being a man of his word, Goku marries her after they face off against each other and Chi Chi forfeits on the agreement he does so.
    A couple years go by and Chi Chi has Goku all to himself, and bears a son Gohan. After Gohan is about two years old Goku runs off to save his son after his evil brother kidnaps him and then dies because of it. That's why Chi Chi is the way she is and you know the rest.

    Something I realize after rewatching the series is that the story is actually about those in Goku's life, but not Goku specifically. Think about all the characters that have had development: Krillin, Tien, Picollo, Gohan, Vegeta... the list goes on. Every single one of them change and grow as the story goes on. Goku, on the other hand, has ZERO character development. On top of that, he's a horrible father...
    Think of every arc as a new character's story and development and Goku is just the eyes we see it through.
