    In this video PGA Golf Professional Rick Shiels puts the Callaway Golf EDGE golf clubs to the test on the golf course and compares the driver to the brand new Callaway Mavrik driver.
    You have probably heard of the TaylorMade Golf SIM driver, the Titleist Golf TS1 driver, the Titleist Golf Pro V1, the Cobra Golf SZ driver but have you ever heard of the Callaway Golf EDGE package set?
    You won't see any golfers on The European Tour or The PGA Tour using the Callaway EDGE golf clubs. However in this video you will find out how good they actually are considering they are so much cheaper than other clubs on the market.

    In February of 2020 I stumbled across a used (like new) set being sold on the Callaway website of their Edge club set. I took a chance and purchased them to replace my older Big Bertha clubs. Upon arrival the clubs appeared not to be "like new" but seemed to be entirely new! I played with them about twice a week since that time and they have worked very well for me until this past week when my driver head started to separate and was unusable. I was disappointed but discovered that there was a 12 month warranty on these used clubs. I called Callaway today but learned they had no Edge drivers available to replace my broken stick. However, Callaway impressed me again by agreeing to replace the driver with a "good" condition Epic Flash Sub Zero driver that, when new, cost more than my entire Edge set. Their customer support and service have made me a Callaway guy for life!

      It’s actually brilliant marketing. Lots of people want to pick up a cheap set to start with, like for a first golf tournament. This gets you into the Callaway ecosystem. Not everyone but some will either slowly upgrade to their more expensive clubs or will replace the entire set with more expensive ones. Plus selling them at the big C takes some of the the fear of going to a golf shop when in your mind you think you suck and don’t belong there.

      It really is a catch 22 50/50 type thing. Put expensive clubs in a casual players hands and they will probably shoot worse than they do with their Strata's or whatever cheaper club set they own. Now, put a set of Strata's in a Tour pro's hands, he will be able to play well but nowhere near as well as he would have played with his personal set of clubs. So, it is the clubs and not the player? Or is it the player and not the clubs? Answer is, it's a 50/50 mix of both.

I couldn’t justify getting fitted and spending thousands just to get started, as I haven’t played golf in over 8 years prior to buying this set. I might get a new driver in the future and or a different putter but I definitely don’t need to. This set allowed me to focus and on my technique and striking consistency taking out the guess work of draw versus fade versus etc etc. Sir thank you for doing this video! It confirmed exactly what I wanted to know!

    • @punanie05
      @punanie05 4 года назад +3

      I agree that if its the difference between buying clubs and starting to golf or not it is an absolute amazing offer and great set of starter clubs. That being said if you can afford it getting fitted is the single most important thing a beginner or novice level golfer can do. A good club fitting will help out a new golfer far more than it will a pro or scratch golfer as the pros can adjust their swing to whatever they are using. Whereas the novice golfer will gain loads from a club that has been fitted to their swing. Not to mention using a club that does not fit your swing can cause loads of headaches on the course. Where as being fitted snd using a club that suites you could potentially save a handful of strokes each round. And when starting out or if you have not been golfing long. A handful of strokes in a round is a huuuuuuge deal. And last but not least getting fitted and using clubs that suit your swing will allow you to gain confidence and become a far more consistent golfer much sooner than trying;g to adjust your swing to something that doesn’t necessarily fit you perfectly and will cause you to create bad habits in your swing that may become very hard to get rid of in the future because your trying to compensate. However that being said again i agree these clubs are great and if they work for you or anyone else then that is absolutely great. All im trying to say is don’t underestimate the value of a good club fitting.

I just purchased a complete "Box" set of Tour Edge Hot Launch -3's, that came with Driver, 3 and 5 woods, 4 and 5 Hybrid, 6 iron thru SW a bag and putter, and I absolutely love them. They were $799.99 US (£607), so easy to hit, and I now play with confidence again. Keep sending the love to us "financially challenged" golfers, by showing "Bang for your buck" clubs, for those of us who can't afford the latest greatest £500+ drivers. (Love the used club challenges as well)

    I've been golfing for 3 years now. Had these now for 2 years. I came from a mixed bag of free clubs from 1999 like a lot of others here. When I got these, my best round was a 116 with the old clubs and my first time out with these I shot a 108 and now I am shooting a 93 best. As a beginner, having a modern set of clubs designed to compliment one another really increased my shot consistency instantly. I highly suggest buying a wedge set to go with the Edge set. I got the lazrus 3 wedge set for 117 dollars from amazon and having more than a 56 degree is extremely helpful. I also ended up putting a ping 4 iron in my bag because I was hitting the 5 hybrid so much further than the 6 iron and it ended up being a nice in between. I can only think of 3 'faults' with the set but being a budget beginners set, they don't take away from the actual clubs. The grips aren't very great. They get the job done but they don't feel amazing and the tape they use in the grooves for the design will start to peel off after taking them out 3 times. The bottom of the driver gets scratched really easily. I have so many white lines under my driver from the tee's rubbing against it. I can't clean them off for the life of me. The set comes with a 56 degree SW and I think its awful! It's so chunky and big and round on the sole that it is very difficult to get into the grass and under the ball. A lot of bouncing off the ground and sculling. Even my seasoned friends were having issues with it so that is how I ended up with a wedge set and will never look back.

    It seems that most people on here are arguing "new tech v old tech" and while certainly that plays a large part of the cost difference, you also have to take into account the sheer buying power of the mystery shop. When the mystery shop approaches a manufacture and asks them to produce a run of say 50,000 sets of a 2 year old design with a new name, the manufacture will cut their margins to the bone, hence, low prices.

    The extra cost on new tech is usually to cover R&D (wages cost more than production), and help fund the next round of R&D. So i would suggest that the EDGE clubs use older tech with no left over R&D costs, also all the research they already do on what players want in their bag means cost for putting this set together is very minimal, mostly just production.

    Hey Rick, I have just started playing about 3 months ago, and came across your channel. Your videos have really helped me. I am now ready to buy my first set and came across this set at the mystery store in Brisbane, Australia.
    Not being able to try it and not much coverage on the net was holding me back. Last week I thought to myself, how good would it be for Rick to do a review 🤔
    You can imagine the smile on my face when I saw your post on Facebook yesterday.
    Keep up the good work!

    Well Rick after your review of the clubs I decided to get a set of these clubs. Let me say these are more quality than most think. I swear this is a much more expensive set in disguise. Thanks fire the heads up and review.

    They are at Costco. I went to Costco today in Coventry in the UK and they have them in stock for £484.99. Not currently available online but if you keep checking, they get them in stock for about 24 hours before they sell out. Costco in Coventry had about 10 sets in stock 2 hours ago.

    You should make a video of buying the cheapest set of used clubs you can find and do the same test. Would be cool to see how cheap you can buy clubs for to get started golfing. I’m a new golfer and spent $45 on a set of clubs and I’m curious if more expensive clubs would really help me progress faster than this cheap set

      Lucky for consumers there are bottom feeder business people who are willing to make next to no profit selling the shit out of something. But without big name companies leading in innovation, you would never even have these clubs for £500

    • @anthonygovantes2456
      @anthonygovantes2456 4 года назад +9

      Overpriced would imply no one buys it, they sell it for $1775 because people still buy it. Simple economics.

      Only reason the cheap clubs exist is because Costco said they would buy millions worth of sets if they can make a set to sell for 399. Callaway only makes money because of the size of the bulk order. New clubs sell more and pay for all the R&D and sponsorships.

    Really interesting! I went into a fitting 2 years ago with callaway stealheads in my mind of what I wanted. The team fitting actually suggested the XR irons saving me money (I tried both plus other brands but the XRs just suited me better). I spent the difference on a new putter (white hot which I love) not everyone needs to spend a bomb on clubs but a good fitting with honest guidance is all you want!

    • @cjaslett
      @cjaslett 4 года назад

      Matt K. I went to American Golf. I travelled a little further to one I knew was quite large and had a big range of stock. The fitting took an hour and a half. One of the shop team did it but the manager of the store came in a couple of times to check how it was going and look through the data. I felt very comfortable that I was getting an honest session and as mentioned above I spent less than I had budgeted for (they knew my budget).

      Probably down to no customisation - mass production of one model for each club only is far far cheaper than having to retool/respec clubs. Also these clubs don't get the mainstream advertising that things like Mavrik do so there's less overhead to recover.

    • @thecoasties1602

      All the marketing and advertising is included in the prices for their higher end clubs/gear. The set as costco is mass produced and zero into marketing, makes for an affordable product.

    I’ve always assumed that package sets from big brands like this are what would have been their top end technology from 10 or so years ago. So the R&D is paid for, they still look relatively modern and they perform fairly well. They just lack the premium materials and stiffer shafts for lower handicap golfers.

    Top quality golf brands get too caught up in making the best product.
    Designing budget gear to get novice golfers involved in the game is incredibly important to the investment of their company.
    Example: I bought Callaway's budget Strata set. Good clubs for the price. Now I'm more likely to purchase Callaway products.

  • @chameleonedm

    They’re that price because they are a exclusive set. The store has already paid for the stock in a large bulk purchase meaning Callaway have received their profit guaranteed. As a result they manufacture them all in one go then stop production. One set, batched produced and pre signed for brings the cost down a lot. If this set was produced as normal it would run for 900 minimum, likely more
    This club set isn’t underpriced nor are their other sets overpriced, this is just a great example of efficient supply chain economics at work

    Paid $499 USD here at the local Costco in Vegas. I have had my set for about a year and a half now, and overall I have no complaints. I really can't see replacing anything in this Kit other than the Driver, for harder swingers the driver is way too whippy. Everything else about this set I love. I do NOT travel with my clubs and I try to rent the good stuff when I travel, and so far I can't justify replacing this set just yet with anything out there. I feel $499 for this entire set is just a steal!
