I was at this show. It was the first time I saw these guys and I was blown away. Not long after, I saw them again at Lake Compounce in Bristol. The opening act The Cult got heckled big time. All hell broke loose, barriers went down and everyone rushed the stage when Metallica opened with Blackened. Metal shows were a blast back in the 80's!!!
I was at both shows, too. Lake Compounce was wild. We ended up about 10 rows from the stage after the crowd rushed it. I still have my concert t-shirt from that show.
Probably the best I've ever heard James sound in my life. Right after MOP, and right before he blew his voice out on the black tour. Still has the high menacing sort of scream from early days, and is just beginning to get the low growl in. It's the perfect mix.
I've read in a few different articles that he's always been 50-60% louder than kirk. I like it like that but it's kinda shitty for kirk. I wonder what pedal kirk uses to boost for solo though?
OMG I bought this Hartford, CT VHS bootleg back in the late 80's. I lost it and now I just tossed my cooks when I found this. Do you hear how abolutely insane those fans are? That was the same way when I saw them in Memphis and Jackson on the Damaged Justice Tour. Thank you so much. Reliving my youth at the moment. Thank you Thank you.
That Compounce show was nuts, among the greatest shows I have ever seen and I have seen countless shows. This was one of the best tours ever and without question their peak.
One of the best shows ive ever seen. The fence separating general admission and seating went down just before they opened with Blackened. I ran to about ten people back from stage. Blew my 16 year old mind!
0:32 Blackened 1:06:51 Creeping Death 6:54 For Whom the Bell Tolls 1:15:10 Fade to Black 11:30 Welcome Home (Sanitarium) 1:27:52 Battery 18:29 Harvester of Sorrow 1:35:10 Helpless 23:45 Eye of the Beholder 1:35:56 Last Caress 30:06 Master of Puppets 1:37:20 Am I Evil 38:55 One 1:41:56 Whiplash 46:57 Seek and Destroy 1:48:21 Breadfan 54:49 ...And Justice for All
I was there front and center. 17 yrs old. I keep pausing to try and find where I am buts it's blurry. Gotta find a way to get it. What a trip. Thanks for posting this. I'm seeing what was until now a 33 year old memory. Crazy
was there and thought queensryche was incredible. also saw metallica on the black album tour, another great show by them, but does anybody expect anything less from these guys. i remember going out to buy kill em all when it came out and was wondering why more bands were not sounding like them. obviously nobody could ever sound like them.
Watching this video reminds me of the night they played at Lake Compounce in Bristol C.T. on the AJFA tour (When The Cult opened up), I just saw Orion Fest in N.J. last weekend, they still are as amazing as ever, these guy are true professionals!!
LARS ULRCH'S KIK DRUMS WERE AS LOUD AS THE LOW BOOM OF FIREWORKS YOU HEAR DURING FINALES. BIG MICK HUGHES REALLY HAD THOSE KIK DRUMS CLAMPED AND GATED (dbx) PUNCHING THROUGH THAT CONCERT SYSTEM !!!! I SAW EM ON THIS TOUR. NEVER HEARD KIK DRUMS SO LOUD AND I BEEN TO ALLOT OF SHOWS.
for sure,my first concert was on this tour in Tucson with Faith No More in Sept. '89. 14 years old! And a huge thanx to my dad for the best birthday gift ever!
this was my favorite concert ever. seen them in pittsburgh with queensryche opening. a bunch of us rented a school bus to take usdown to the show. one of my best high school memories
Taking you child to a gig is one of the best things in the world. My first gig was Iron Maiden when I was 15, last time I saw them was last year when I was 35. I had my six year old son with me. Something neither of us will ever forget.
THE CROWD IS SCREAMING LIKE THEY ARE ON A ROLLER COASTER BECAUSE THEY FINNALY GRT TO HEAR LARS ULRICH'S KIK DRUMS AT HEADLINING FULL POWER. TYPEWRITTER SLAP OR,,,FIREWORKS BOOM. WONDER IF BIG MICK HUGHES USED dbx GATES IN THE KIK DRUMS TO DIAL IN THE PUNCH AND SLAP , OR ARE THOSE TRIGGERS WITH A SAMPLED KIK SOUND WHICH WOULD EXPLAIN THE TYPE WRITER SLAP
"you sound like one of them "youtube comment tough guy".....who wants to start an arguement" Really? What gave you that impression? I'm not trying to be disagreeable here, but all I want to say is that James chose his own vocal path. Bob Rock was there to facilitate that change that James wanted. It's Hetfield we're talking about here. He's not going to let anyone change him except himself.
@nostalgiaVHS.... i was 10th row centre at this show. queensryche wiped the floor with metallica. AND.... at the end of eyes of a stranger the lights went out, a five count, lights came up and half the stage was struck. no encore, nothing. jaws were on the floor. metallica was horrible. but i'm a drummer and i payed most of my attention to lars who couldn't get the kicks right in one. i was actually a metallica fan TILL this show, but ´ryche was AMAZING. however, it was a metallica crowd.
James blew his voice out while recording the black album. He went and saw a professional singer who brought his voice back to normal and corrected some of his bad habits enabling James to have a career 20 years later. If for that reason he lost some anger or aggression then fine, but just because Bob was producing the records doesn't mean he had anything to do with James' voice change.
People might not regard Justice as Metallica's best album. But during this touring cycle, imho, they were at the height of their prowess. Cliffs loss notwithstanding.
.... and the funniest moment was halfway through metallica when the guy in front of me turned around cross eyed drunk and said, "isn't this the best show ever" and puked all over himself. ahh, those were the days. to be 17 again.....
im a little insulted that ur telling me what i believe.i never said that, but if you feel like you need to tell people what they think,...i wont stand in your way
lol,we went in a car 6deep..got pulled over getn off the highway only 1 of us was old enuff 2 drink n we had 2 cases of beer. coppers made me n my buddy open every 1 of them n dump em out,,,,but we still had r tix n they let us go n wen the lights went down.we 4got all about it til i seen this show

My mom was at the Bristol show. Forever jealous
I was at both shows, too. Lake Compounce was wild. We ended up about 10 rows from the stage after the crowd rushed it. I still have my concert t-shirt from that show.
Saw them on that tour in Bloomington Minnesota, The Cult lead singer was a whiny bitch.. I think they replaced the Cult with Queensryche soon after
My cousin was at the Lake Compounce. He told me about the show a couple of days later and it was like he was describing being in a war
I was at this show. 13 years old, in heaven.
Ditto... same age
Probably the best I've ever heard James sound in my life. Right after MOP, and right before he blew his voice out on the black tour. Still has the high menacing sort of scream from early days, and is just beginning to get the low growl in. It's the perfect mix.
James' guitar = LOUD!
I've read in a few different articles that he's always been 50-60% louder than kirk. I like it like that but it's kinda shitty for kirk. I wonder what pedal kirk uses to boost for solo though?
Jordan Johnson Kirk amp is louder during the solos
Damn, they were in their prime, and 40min from my house...

That Compounce show was nuts, among the greatest shows I have ever seen and I have seen countless shows. This was one of the best tours ever and without question their peak.
Is there any footage of it??
One of the best shows ive ever seen. The fence separating general admission and seating went down just before they opened with Blackened. I ran to about ten people back from stage. Blew my 16 year old mind!

The boys came to Minneapolis twice on this tour....saw both shows. That 14 year old head banger is still in me. Always will be!
Holy crap, Metallica was heavy as hell back then. I was only 2. This is Metallica at their peak no doubt.

If I was Jason, I would've punched James right in his shit a long time ago! The way they treated Jason is beyond me!!
