Rygar (NES) Playthrough

  • A playthrough of Tecmo's 1987 action-adventure game for the NES, Rygar.
Predating such classics as Metroid, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Rygar was among the first of its type to be released on North America, and it was a immediate hit when it dropped for the NES in the summer of 1987.
Though it shares its name with a Tecmo coin-op game released in 1986, Rygar bears little resemblance to its namesake. Instead of dumping a cutdown version of a simple left-to-right platformer on the NES, Tecmo went back to the drawing board and created a brand new action-adventure experience for the console audience.
The NES game's plot follows the same plot beats as its progenitor: Ligar's army has invaded the holy land of Argool, and as was foretold by a prophecy, the legendary hero Rygar has risen from his grave to once again take up arms against the forces of evil.
At the outset, Rygar can access most of Argool from the Garloz overworld, a hub area dotted with doors that lead to the action stages that form the meat of the game. Both Garloz and the action stages, however, feature large sections that'll remain inaccessible until Rygar has found the appropriate tool to overcome certain obstacles. The grappling hook will allow him to climb to high ledges, the pulley is used to cross ropes spanning rivers and gorges, and the crossbow creates rope bridges over chasms that are too wide to jump.
Rygar's abilities also improve as he fights and gains experience. As his "tone" increases, Rygar's weapon, the yoyo-like "disk armor," becomes stronger, and the more "last" he has, the longer his life gauge will grow. Finally, collecting "mind" will allow him to cast magic spells. “Power Up" makes the disk armor fly faster and farther, “Attack & Assail” hits every enemy on-screen ten times before it wears off, and “Recovery” completely refills Rygar’s life bar.
Rygar's gameplay is fluid and has a good sense of progression, the platforming controls are buttery smooth, and the goals are clearly signposted. It doesn’t leave you wandering for hours trying to figure out what to do next, and it doesn’t beat you down with an unreasonable level of difficulty. It's actually quite a forgiving game in that regard, especially compared to its contemporaries.
The graphics and sound also stand up extremely well for a game of its age. The locations are memorable (that blood red sky at sunset, wow!), there are a few cool instances of parallax background scrolling, and most of the tunes will have you humming along after a few minutes. Also, anyone who has played Jekyll and Hyde will immediately recognize the tune that plays as you're speaking to the Indora.
This early mix of action, adventure, and RPG elements come together to form an unexpectedly addictive experience. With Rygar, Tecmo set the standard for a budding genre, and history tells us that this would be far from the last time they pulled off such a feat.

Then again, I don't have the appetite to play these games like I used to. Nowadays, it's WoW or something modern.

I’m Severely based, I believe attack on titan 2 on switch is the best reason to buy the platform. But Industry biased doesn’t like this video game company because they did not want to support the Sega Dreamcast and Dead or Alive was trash. Sony was never gonna support tecmo, they still don’t, and RUclipsrs don’t. Because video game reviews is the original fake news

Last time I played this was when I was a kid. I remember the open world map (not unlike Zelda), with little suggestion or guidance as to which path to take. It was pretty easy to get lost. I also remember the life-meter power up with the more enemies you killed. Side note: I distinctly remember finding a screen with non-stop enemy generation and putting my controller on auto-fire for 10 - 15 minutes straight 😂😛😉
What I DO NOT remember is the power-up you are using to damage all enemies on the screen (using it on bosses). That is so OP. The bosses were always one of the hardest parts about this game, but you beat them pretty-much effortlessly. Wish I had known about that!

The last stage can be broken so you can pass through walls. It's nintendo hard. You have to stand on the very last pixel of land on any screen that faces the outer edge where there is only sky and jump off. You must jump so far towards the edge of the screen that the game is forced to scroll to the next screen. If done corrextly you will double jump and wrap around to the opposite side of the castle. From there the game glitches up so there's no wall detection.

"the goals are clearly signposted. It doesn’t leave you wandering for hours trying to figure out what to do next"
I'd actually COMPLETLY disagree with that based on personal experience.
I had this game when I was a really young kid and hated it because I had no idea what to do, where to go, what the game was even intending me to do. I just died several times, with a "Game Over" and assumed that's all it was after trying to play it for a few weeks, even coming back to it. The Legend Of Zelda, even, I could manage with, but this, I didn't care for. Eventually, I stopped playing it as a kid and regarded this as a "really bad game" for over 30 years. Then one day I saw a video online about it and that there was far more to the game than I ever knew. There was actual progression, a way to get stronger, and even overhead sections. Things I had NO idea were part of the game as a kid and never found even after coming back to it for weeks. Only as an adult was I ever able to come back to this game and appreciate it at all. So I'd say, from personal experience this was one of the most unclear and obtuse games since Milon's Secret Castle. I ended up having fun with it, but that was because it took me over 30 years to learn the game had more than I had any way to find out on my own.

    @PlusmaGun 4 месяца назад +1

I consider Rygar one of Team Tecmo (alongside Ryu Hayabusa and Dana) because of the big mark that this NES game left!
It's easy to see that Rygar was made with a ton of effort and care from Tecmo back then. Sure, this game is highly exploitable, but for such a small game, there's a lot of stuff in it, which makes this NES game from 1987 all the more impressive.
Even the Japanese version of Rygar (Argos No Senshi) is worth checking out, as that version has different music in some areas, including the music in Dorago's Palace (dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun), all of which sound great on their own accords.
And sure, the game's graphics involve the color black a lot, but I consider that an advantage to Rygar, as that make the game look rather rocky, which is pretty much what Argool is, even in the arcade game. The enemies and bosses all have names, and they look great and intimidating, including Pragokelis and Rolpher (the two you fight at the beginning areas).
Heck, even the manual for this game fascinates me! Animalized Men Wriggling Eerily, anyone?
It's truly a shame that Rygar (and Dana too, for that matter) got ignored so much by Koei Tecmo, when it should be rather easy to make another game starring Rygar, saving Argool once more, or making him a guest character in the next Dynasty Warriors entry! If anyone, Bao Sanniang (whose Bladed Yo-Yo is the closest to his Diskarmor) could help them out with that! Just give Rygar some tricks of his own, and that should do it!
As for right now, however, Tecmo's Rygar is the equivalent to Sunsoft's Blaster Master, and you know this as much as me!
