I agree with all your thoughts in this video. The stock paddle should have skins, the swing weights need to come down, and the spin numbers need to go up about 200 rpms. Once those adjustments are made, I'll be buying day 1.
I'm also looking forward to being able to put customized designs on the skins. Aesthetic is an important part of paddle design for me, and having the freedom to customize my own paddle face would be a huge plus. I was a bit surprised when you didn't talk about that potential benefit.
I'm really looking forward to the pickleball future where we can replace the face surface of our paddles. It is a huge waste of money to buy a brand-new paddle every few months just to get your spin back. Huge props to PIKKL for innovating in this space.
Pickleball paddle companies will NOT like this. This will go the way of table tennis where one can stick to one or two paddles, and then proceed to experiment with different sponge/rubbers.
If this is standardized, then awesome for the consumers.
great video, tnks for the info!; ive been bugging Will (reload) about them for the past year or so! haha, im anxious to try them and/or tinker with the swing weight!
My solution is to use a circular skin. The paddle really only wears out in the center anyways and using perhaps 1/3 of the material will significantly improve the swing weight problem while also making them a one size fits all solution.
Most relevant pickleball info on RUclips. Great job! As usual.
Just played with my Volair Mach 1 forzda with Pikkl Skin installed, it felt good and definitely felt like I was getting more spin. Have to try it a few more times to be sure.
Great video!
Just got mine today. Put them on my old 2016 G7 gearbox that is smooth as glass out of the box. Not a tournament player, so won't be an issue. Was a bit disapointed with the "grit level" Thought it would be more.
The process is an "emboss" and not a "peel ply" which may acount for the consistency. Glad to hear they can be removed just in case I want them on a different paddle.
great video!
This concept would also work for sound control where that is a complaint. Another video showed how quiet and spin producing a layer of ping pong rubber on the paddle face. If these companies produced a thin version it might help sound control. Probably restricted to rec play. But who knows what’s in the future ? Cheers.
Nice that it is finally taken into consideration. It should be like table tennis where you can change the surface.
Like Table Tennis 🏓 paddles, one buys a plain blade, then adds the different rubber to the playing surface. We don't overlay the new rubber over the original. I have an Onix Z5 composite Pball paddle that I would try the new grit on since the composite paddle had NO surface texture at all. It's a totally flat surface.
Skins are the future and I'm sure we will end up with a situation similar to Table Tennis. Rubbers in Table Tennis are approved for use on any racket; yes, they are called rackets in table tennis. I imagine many paddles just being smooth faced with the sole intention with them to be used with skins. Also, there really is no need for the skin to be a perfect match to the face shape as we really only need to retain spin performance in the hitting area. I'm guessing the exact fit was due to the USAP requiring it.
USAP is a joke
Appreciate the hot environment testing, but I am curious how they would hold up in slightly wet conditions.
So essentially it's an overlay/decal. Custom paddles often use this process with polycarbonates that can be gritty as well. Outgassing and bubbling will occur if not properly sealed. Changes the swing weights as well.
Cool idea that I hope other brands will follow. I got both PIKKL paddles are they’re so mid. I knew I should have gone with Volair. 😢
Such a great ATP!!!
Hey! That looks just like Jenny and Alan’s backyard. 😊
Thoughts on a future video: What exactly does peel ply mean? You can say it all day when talking about carbon fiber and kevlar, but how is it applied and what makes it more durable than paint grit?
They goin crazy right now
My Volair Mach 1 forzda has lost a lot of spin. I ordered a skin, going to break the law and put on my Mach 1!
They need to make a replaceable skin paddle that comes stock with that feature instead of adding the skin that makes the paddle heavier?
What about playing with the skin on one side? Swing weight would be less but there could be a tactical advantage.
In table tennis we often have different rubbers on each side, one might be tacky/grippy and the other is slippery.
I could see a slippery/grippy combo paddle being a tactical advantage where one side is “spin resistant” in defense and the other is very spinny for offense. In TT we “twiddle” (flip your paddle) to use this to our advantage.
Awaiting for someone to add some sand under the skin before applying and seeing if that adds a noticeable amount of grit lol
Someone should create an aerosol can where you can just spray on some extra grit to your paddle.
OMG! I just found this video.. I missed the deal!!!
Can you clean the skin with a paddle eraser?
How about the J2k paddles?
This is one step towards having rubber on the paddles…
Did you like the hurricane pro 14 or 16 better. Coming from a double black diamond
Awesome vid! 😊
I bought them and mine had almost zero grit. The adhesive came off very quickly in the sun. I guess you could glue it back down if you want but these skins are not too good! The spin did not improve at all and I put it on a thermoformed T700 paddle. (ronbus) The spin was much better when I first bought the paddle! Much Better!
Did yours not stick back to the paddle after pressing your hand into it?
@@PickleballStudio Yes I pressed it back on and it came off again in a few minutes. In the bottom corner on the right hand side. The other side stayed on though so who knows.
Should log time in hours to more accurately compare. Test at regular intervals.
Log time of what?
@@PickleballStudio log hours played with a specific paddle.
Paddles are wearing out to fast for the cost. I wore out a Luxx on both sides in 3 months. I play 3-4 days a week and do drills a couple times a week. I called Sellkirk and they say it does not cover normal wear and I argued with them that 3 months was not acceptable for wearing out a $250 a paddle. No luck and I had to buy a second paddle for leagues or tournament play. I have since switched to a Double diamond and a Volair Mach1. They are both a month old so seem fine so far. I know other people that have had other Sellkirks wearing out. I'm done with Sellkirk along with several people I spoke to. I can't spend $1000 a year on paddles.
How long do they last? It’s cool to have the option to switch out the skin when the grit wears down but if I have to do that every other week, it kind of defeats the point.
Months, not weeks
@@mikestrommen6916 sure. Still doesn’t answer the question
@@JflipJedi so far in testing, we are over 3 months without degradation
@@mikestrommen6916 Awesome. Thank you! So, when you say “without degradation” do you mean actually no change in spin rate or just minimal change?
$20 for a sticker??? For that price you can get a brand new carbon fiber pickleball paddle on Temu, which are no different from name brand paddles. Tested
Does the additional weight come with additional power?
More plow through on the ball, yes. Similar to adding lead.
If it alters the numbers of your paddle that much its basically useless
I would buy this but I refuse to buy from any company with anything close to "Pickle" in their name.
Agreed
Why? Is it just annoying to you? Genuine question.
Bro, you have the best videos about paddles and equipment anywhere. Please though, your camera shots are so tight. It’s like you’re in my house! Backup. Haha :)
Haha. Noted! 😂 I’m just working with a very small office space.

@@bleed4glory10 it would make a great thumbnail image 😂
When am i getting my tenergy "skin" with speed glue.....or sandpaper....
These guys don't know about Tenergy 😂. I use only T05 both sides
@@frankgonzales8340 Boosted H3 is better on forehand and you know it
@uchihasasuke7436 Hurricane is legit, different stroke required, though. I started playing PB about 6mo ago...I'm hooked. I hit some fh loop drive and my BH flick resemble s my BH loop, SPINNY!!!
I can't stop looking at that piece of hair on the left side of his face. 😆
Aside from protecting profits, what is the reason for the manufacturer specific skins?
It's easier to customize the paddle and the face wears down pretty fast, why would you change the entire paddle when basically you just need the original face of it? Isn't the same idea as the grip?
USAPA certification
@@ap6232 I’m asking what’s USAPA’s reasoning?
The code is not working
Selkirk should have done this for their overpriced painted on grit paddles
Sounds like they need to change their paddle philosophy to be 100% using skins and not bother with grit on the paddle itself. That way they can get everything nice and balanced
For sure! Sounds like that is the plan for future models.
I have no interest in this product at this time. I get bored with paddles and want to get something new. So if they build the new paddles with the 10 pts of swing weight to start with, they will be way too light without the skin on it.
The point would be that the paddle would have the skin as the default face so when you replace the skin, the swing weight and twist weight would not change.
This should be so illegal in the game. The amount of cheating will be off the charts.
well ping pong players been doing this forever… lol…
@PickleballStudio You need to reserve some hats specifically for studio video shots because the sweat stains are showing on your hat in this video both on the underside of the bill and even a bit on front. Yikes!
interesting concept but half baked execution
