  • I have received a lot of questions about what pedals are best for the John Frusciante cleanish tone so here be the top 3 Pedals I recommend.
One of the most important things when picking a Pedal for the John tone is the it has to be compatible with the Ibanez WH10 wah and Boss DS2.
I hope this vid helps and thank you so much for watching. : )

This is so impressive. This is the first guitar video I've ever seen where the presenter discusses pedals that go well together. I know that sounds crazy - shouldn't they ALL discuss that? - but it doesn't happen, in my experience. Thanks, Dave! By the way, I spent your entire talk about pedals wondering when that spider was going to jump on your head.

Thanks Dave for this video, very well explained. I fell in love with a fender tonemaster twin reverb the other day, and the only thing stopping me from buying it then and there was not being able to do this due to the amount of headroom on the amp (which is kinda the point of it). After watching this video I'm pretty confident that I can get pretty close with the jackhammer (the EQ should help heaps), helped by the fact that you can actually change the powerstage of the tonemaster from 1, 5, 20 80 something watts to help it break up which is usually impossible with a classic tube twin. Also the twin actually has a mid EQ as opposed to most fender amps so that's should help smooth it out.

I love how when you give examples you draw a lot from John's live performances as well. Thanks for the advice regards the pedals. Now that I've actually got money a little extra money to spend for the first time in my adult life, I will slowly begin to invest in key Frusciante pedals. It's interesting to note that all three pedals here are in very similar in price and all highly affordable.

    Bass 3
    Gain 2

Is the Dunlop MXR Micro-Amp also a good choice for boosting the signal when using the DS2 & Ibanez Wah (v3)? I am more attracted towards the Jackhammer cuz there is more EQ adjustability but I want to know if the MxR Microamp falls also in this section of boost-OD pedals. Thanks in advance & keep it up! 🤘🏻

Hello Dave, congratulations on your work and your music, you can see that you do all this with passion and dedication. I've followed pretty much all of your videos on how to get the Frusciante sound and I'm almost there. in a video you said that you rely on your pedals to recreate the sound because obviously you can't always have your favorite amp available. In my case I have this amp: DV Mark Jazz 12 can you give me some advice on how to set it up? if I put the volume of the ds 2 to 10 there is a jump in volume too large but if I keep it more I lose the characteristic sound of the ds 2 (as you teach ^^). Thanks for your time and keep it up! 😊

No worries if not familiar, your set-ups are so specifically nuanced I thought it may be worth asking since you seem to really understand the pedal and amp interactions.

I have seen also your videos on your amplifiers, but can't really get the tone right. Hi Dave, Thanks for these videos. They are really helpful. One question though, what is it about the wh10 that is so important to use that wah vs say a standard Vox wah? I ask because I like playing rhcp tunes as a fairly serious hobbyist and I don't particularly care for the wh10 for anything other than rhcp but I have a Vox 847 wah that I like for other stuff I play as well like hendrix and jimmy page type stuff. I am just trying to get in the ballpark in tone and would like to just use one wah for everything I play. By not using the wh10 does it just mean that my wah tone is different but not my bypassed tone, i.e., the wah isn't crucial to the bypassed tone as well right? Thanks.

Hi Dave! As usual thanks for sharing your knowledge with all of us. I have a few questions: I have a Marshall dfx30, an Ibanez wah, a ds2, a micro amp and a dynamic compressor. Would you recommend to achieve a more cleanish frusciante tone an overdrive? Also what's the best order for those pedals? Thanks for your response mate!

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  4 года назад +1

I would run them like this
      Amp
      Compressor
      Micro Amp
      Ibanez wah
      Ds2
I would leave the compressor on all the time if your after that cleaner John tone. I would then just set the amp kind of cleanish on the overdrive channel of the amp. : )

Will Gullicio made a Triungular lab ensemble crunch pedal from the ce-1. He also made a Triungular lab Boss ce-1 chorus ensemble. You could get one of them from Triungular lab on Facebook it has the preamp in the pedal just like the original ce-1 or you can get the ensemble crunch which is just the ce-1 crunch preamp.

I first seen you on your Boss Katana 50 demo and I've watched that at least 10 times!!! I love it! Nobody on RUclips has made the Katana sound like that video. I'm debating on buying a Katana just to be able to play on your John Fruciante setting!!! It's wonderful... Since then I haven't seen you use The Katana? Do you still recommend??? Thanks.

I do indeed still highly recommend the Katana. It my main gigging amp now it sits downstairs. Thank you so very much for watching. : )

Dave Simpson did you get the FS-6 two button footswitch for your Katana 50? Or do you leave it on clean and use a pedal for dirt??? Thanks.

I have an issue with my Marshall jackhammer. I'm obviously trying to replicate whats been shown here, but my DS2 sounds terrible when combined with my JH1. It does prevent the volume jump but makes the distortion signal inconsistent. Any ideas why this would be happening? Love the work you do on this chanel Dave.

Hey Dave, thanks for the great video! Would you turn the blues driver on the Katana 50 off and use the Golden Plexi/JH instead? Does this make sense?

    • @thedavesimpson

Thank you very much for watching and I would indeed use the jackhammer instead of the blues driver. A little more control over the ds2 and wh10. :)

Hey Dave, I have a boss katana 100 and just bought a golden plexi. I can't get the sound quite right, using your katana acoustic sim clean sound. Any tips what settings to try and adjust and what to leave as is? Thanks

This is great dave!! Just found a barely used jackhammer on ebay!! So when you run it through your CR120s dirty channel are the settings the same as in the video? Also what are the settings on your dirty channel of the amp, and does that all stay the same at gig volumes? Thank you!!!

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  6 лет назад +1

They are the same settings indeed but you will have tweak them. I set my CR120
      Gain 2 1/2
      Bass 0
      Middle 6
      Treble 4
      Volume 10

Thanx for all your videos, I've been using that trick of the not so clean sound in eeeevery style of music and It works so well. I wonder if I could use a micro amp or a blues driver before the amp, have you tried any of that? Thanks a lot

I have tried both and sadly both don't play well with other pedals when run that way.

Hello Dave, great video again. Next week i finally will get my Jackhammer. Very difficult to find these days. I have 3 amps: Blackstar HT5R valve amp, Blackstar Silverline Standard, digital amp but the cleans are fabulous. And i have a Marshall Silver Jubilee 3005 mini stack from 1987, which makes an unpleasant noise unfortunately. What amp would you choose for my JF setup? I have the Ibanez WH10 Black Purple wah, DS2 and PastFX Chorus Ensemble. Most of the time i play and record them with my computer and i don't gig. Thanks in advance Maestro!

Hi Dave, would you have any advice on getting this tone from a fender blues junior amp? It seems to be quite hard to get the tone, I’ve got a jackhammer in the post I think that’ll help break up the cleanness of the amp but yeah, if you got any advice I would appreciate it!

Hey Dave, do you run the golden plexi first before the ds2 and wh10 or after those two and into the amp?
Thank you :) have a great day!

And also what about a peavy musician series head early 80’s solid state I believe.. does that lie on the the more marshally sound.. I’m fairly certain it does to my ear at least but want to know before I start buying all the pedals I need for the sound
