Getting John Frusciante's Tone Using A Fender Amp - Part 1

  • I feel this is as close as I can get to John's tone using a fender but I feel its just not the right amp for that tone.
I definitely recommend following the pedal route as its easier and less painful. :)
I really hope this video is ok. : )

    • @ysius
      @ysius 3 года назад +1

@Luke I thought like that too when I was younger. Then I realised complex stuff (BSSM) isnt always better. Leaving notes out and letting the ones in that really matter can be so good. I like his tone on BSSM a lot, I'm actually obsessed with it in a way, especially the clean-esque chord parts and funky lines. But calling the tone and lines from scar tissue or even around the world amateuristic shows your ears aren't that far yet

So I messaged a few videos back saying you got me back in to guitar after 3 year. I bought a blackstar core I'd 150 watt amp. And a vintage V6 signature guitar. Been playing some old favourite tracks. John fruschante Wayne and some other lead guitar stuff. Daing it my fingers are not as fast as they where but my pinky finger is getting some muscle memory back. So glad you inspired me to play again. Hopefully this time I stick with it and practice more. The 2nd hand sales of the JH-1 must have totally gone up since Dave has been doing this tutorials! I mean that’s the key ingredient, other than a particular style of playing, playing all the strings but muting those you don’t want to hear.

An alternative to the grill cloth 'mask' would be a lil' passive tone control box (literally a pot and a cap with a few jacks) in your FX loop, or even just a patch cable with a cap wired-in. I've done this a few times to smooth out spiky solidstate amps, makes a huge difference!

Yeah Dave you made perfect sense. I'm not trying to get johns sound but you have show me a lot about how to set up amps for pedals I'm using a pod 2.0 running a wet dry rig with a katana 50 and Marshall mg 15 and a pedal board. Thanks for the help on how to get a guide line to run those amps. I use the line 6 pod on the Marshall Jcm 800 setting with a tube screamer set like SRV and behringer hm 300 like you run your ds2 before the wah. Instead of wah. First that really gets a hairy tone. Thank you Dave for your help.

    Hi Dave,
I've got a request for you ;) . I really like your sound. Its warmness and overdrive remind me of the Californication era shows. However, John sometimes played much cleaner, for example live at Slane Castle. His sound there was really clean. Maybe you could do a test one day where you try the minimum of gain from the Jackhammer which still tames the DS-2 and WH-10. That would be awesome! Thanks for your videos, I've learned a lot from you over the years.

I only play Fender amps, I love them. So nice and bright. But I completely agree with your assessment here. The one sound that's difficult to get out of a Fender is a Marshall. Besides the 2 "marshall boxes" and modding the amp, could you get there using a compressor pedal with a 7 or 10 band eq pedal at the beginning of the chain?

    • @thedavesimpson

My fender frontman 100 212 combo sounds like a magical Marshall on three drive channel with out the mid contour and I use Celestion speakers in it and it's got a great Mesa tone with mids contour switched on ! Its great for a solid state amp ! Im actually using it for bass guitar now with another 212 ampeg cabinet under it and then run the line out to a powered 412 cabinet for a total of 8 speakers 12 inch speakers for the bass and then I use a peavey valve king 100 head with matching 412 peavey cabinet and run a Marshall jcm600 head with matching 412 Marshall cabinet and run them in stereo with my Headrush pedal board as the brain fur effects amp's and microphone ir abs speaker cabinet ir.

You can actually get beam blockers for speakers that fit in front of your speakers when you install them. Bit more precise and consistent that the SRV mod and you don’t have to get the grille off so they’ll work in anything! I use em in all my amps, even if they’re not too trebley it makes them less beamy in front and just sound more even in the room

I've got the fender frontman and the American sound joyo pedal that sounds amazing for American ampeg, fender twins and fender tweed amp's its got all those tones so I'd say the Marshall joyo should really work great !
I must also tell you the way I get a great Marshall tone using the fender frontman drive channel turn uber gain down and try the mids contour switch to get the natural Marshall tone and also get Mesa gain by using three mid contour switch on for Mesa off for Marshall and you should be able to get Marshall tones ! I know I get the Marshall and Mesa tones out of my fender frontman 100 with celestion speakers it works great !

Hi, Dave! Greetings from Brazil! What would be the best pedal chain order to sound like john with these pedals: Big muff, cry baby, boss ce5, jackhammer, triangulo lab ce1 crunch, DS2, SD1, DL4? Love your work ❤

Dave you are the best! I have a question in this video, do you use the wah in the effects chain before or after the DS-2?

Hey, Dave. Do you think that replacing the Jackhammer for a Klon style pedal would also work? Cheers!

No idea. Not a fan of what those pedals do.

Hello Dave, congratulations on your work and your music, you can see that you do all this with passion and dedication. I've followed pretty much all of your videos on how to get the Frusciante sound and I'm almost there. in a video you said that you rely on your pedals to recreate the sound because obviously you can't always have your favorite amp available. In my case I have this amp: DV Mark Jazz 12 can you give me some advice on how to set it up? if I put the volume of the ds 2 to 10 there is a jump in volume too large but if I keep it more I lose the characteristic sound of the ds 2 (as you teach ^^). Thanks for your time and keep it up! 😊

Great video, Dave have you ever thought about trying the JHS Morning Glory pedal? I think it has that Marshall/Frusciante sound in a box. Worth checking out. I think Josh of JHS pedals has just released a video about the Morning Glory so go have a gander see what you think 👍🏼

Dave I am new to your channel and dude this is amazing. You are really gifted and you need have more confidence in yourself and your ear. You spend way to much time in this video anyway apologizing. These mods you are offering aren't in the vernacular of most of us. Also you don't have some 'The Pedal Show" production crew. I joined your Patreon on the spot man!! Now I will spend a good many hours catching up with a bit of your output!

Should i just use my friedman irx rather than my deluxe reverb? I love the thickness and warmth of the deluxe. But maybe a losing battle.
