      Number one tip to new fans-
      (No shit here) don’t worry at all about the lines and circles on the ice. It’s not important at first when you’re watching. They mean nothing after awhile. You have no idea how many people I’ve tried getting into hockey and their first question is “I just don’t understand all the stuff on the ice it’s too confusing to look at” WATCH THE PLAY, THE FLOW OF A GAME WHERE A TEAM IS BUZZING AROUND. Huge thing to touch on for newbies

    I learned the difference between refs and linesmen from a random fan at my first live game (1995 I was 10). He took the time to tell me the refs have the orange armbands and call penalties. The linesmen call offsides, icing, hand pass, ect. Thanks random Sabres fan from 1995!

    Glad you called out the gatekeepers out there. I never understood dumping on newbies trying to learn the game. I would love to see hockey compete with the MLB and NBA for TV time in the States. And the only way this happens is to grow the sport.

    • @Navs126
      @Navs126 3 года назад +11

      Wish more people had this mindset. I’m sure new fans or casuals get pushed away from the sport because of how hard some veteran fans can be on newcomers. More people enjoying the sport is good for hockey.

    • @f.n04
      @f.n04 3 года назад +4

      Yup. Unfortunately hockey has some of the most close minded, anti-change and ignorant fans of any sport.

    • @andrewhogan6533
      @andrewhogan6533 3 года назад

      I’ll give you an example of why. Because in order to get casual fans to watch, you feel the need to start changing and adding stupid things to the game, to get people who don’t really care about the sport, just about all the new crap the sport is trying to do to get new fans. For most old school NFL fans, they can’t stand what’s become of the NFL with all the other extracurricular bs that goes on. So, you effectively push out what fans of the actual sport loved about the game in order to please people that only have a passing interest. If you like the game that much, jump on in, we just don’t want it to turn into a circus in order to get some new blood.

  • @sdeepj

      This was my first year as a hockey fan. I probably don’t have any good observation. I decided I wasn’t going to learn analytics and stats outside of the very basics like goal numbers. It’s a great game, however I find myself chasing the puck the whole game. I’m not sure if everyone does it or not. I also can’t keep up with player changes that happen on the fly. This year during the offseason, I’m gonna learn terminology and try my best to keep up with the game. I love it so far and I plan to stick around for many more games to come.

    • @The_OvP
      @The_OvP 3 года назад +5

      @@mobius1965 hockey is VERY fast paced, hard to always know where the puck is. And if you pay attention you'll find the players don't even know where the puck is sometimes. With experience you be able to tell just by player positioning and movement (also look to where the players are looking they're almost always looking towards the puck). I love hockey and i'm glad more fans are coming, playoff hockey is top tier. Also the Minnesota state hockey tourney is superb, highly recommend looking at that.

    Am a newish fan, been watching for 2 years but the most confusing thing for me still isn't what penalties were called or not called, its what is a dirty hit? is it high, is it late compared to a clean hit cant tell the difference it all looks the same. So now all I do is follow what Shannon says - If he says its dirty then its dirty if he says its clean then its clean simple. All these fans replaying hits as evidence am like wait for me to watch the THG review then ill decide who I support.
    But above and beyond that the first rule I learned is if its your team then all their hits are clean and players are just diving.

    • @vooswing
      @vooswing 3 года назад +1

      Second rule: If it’s Wilson or Marchand it’s probably dirty. 😉
      I’ve watched hockey for 30 years and boarding is very subjective because it’s basically a check BUT the player is in a dangerous position when they are hit. Usually they are a few feet away from the boards where there’s a high likelihood they’ll hit the boards in a dangerous way, a blindside hit where the player can’t defend themselves, or a hit in the back.
      Whether it’s called or not is anyone’s guess though, I’ve seen horribly dangerous hits that weren’t called and what I thought were clean hits that resulted in penalties. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    When I was a couch for my kids when they were younger, I took a ref course to help me (didn't grow up around hockey so I tried to learn as much as I could). From that I learned that the only consistency in reffing is inconsistency. The biggest thing they pushed was be committed to your call. Basically, you had to sell it wether it was correct or not. I'll fully admit I'm one of the somewhat toxic fans. One friend in particular, every single time a goal is scored when I'm watching with him he immediately asks "which player got the goal." At first I would answer him or say "well X player took the shot but it was deflected partway in. I'm not sure if it was Y player deflecting it or if it was actually player Z on the other team in which case it would be X's goal." After awhile I started telling him "give it a few seconds and the goal will be announced." Now I just don't say anything and he repeatedly asks me until the goal's announced.
    That being said, I've gotten a decent number of friends into hockey and I've brought them to games and explained everything patiently to them. It's just the repeated question every time that irks me.

    Hey I have question. Is the NHL actively trying to make the game more like royal rumbles or are they trying to open it up for the stars to shine, more action, more speed, more goals? Cause from my point of view it looks like when playoff time comes the stars just get snubbed out by the rough stuff, pretty much become non existent. Some games I watched this year were crazy rough. An Oilers Canadiens game late in the season comes to mind where the amount of hitting was nuts. You would think the NHL would see the NBA and NFL's success in gearing the game towards allowing the stars to shine. Seems they are going in the opposite direction. Thoughts?

      @jefflarson1652 3 года назад

      If you ever watch hockey players being interviewed after a game, they don't really want to be referred to as stars. It's always the boys, the goalie, the great pass, and the team. It's a sport where everyone knows who the stars are, but also how dependent they are on others. Since even your stars are only on the ice for 1/3 of the game, I'm not sure making things easier for the stars to shine would work out too well.

    I grew up watching NBA, NFL , MLB, and MLS, not really .
    Anyway for me I can't stand basketball anymore, not what it used to be, it's super soft , 3 pointers. No contact .
    Football is overrated, baseball is slow, I'm adhd so 15 mins in, and you're losing my attention.
    I like the fast plays, 1-on-1 boxing matches, teeth pulling, trash talk .. Man, I can not believe I miss 20 yrs' worth of HOCKEY! THESE dudes are tougher.. I'm learning

    Trying to demonstrate "goalie inteference" during the meetups will be a compilation of people touching the goalie ranging from a slight brush to a full on charge. New fans can figure it out from there because we veteran fans sure as hell still don't know what this rule is!
