    • @robert48044
      @robert48044 3 года назад +3

      As a fan of a rebuilding team this was a great explanation about why you can no longer buy a championship. It's not even the salary cap its compensation. You can buy a guy but you won't be able to keep it going because later down the road you won't have trade pieces. The video was eye opening.

    • @cameronward9443
      @cameronward9443 3 года назад

      Any RFA that is worth 2.2 to 4.3 is most likely an up and comer and is probably performing pretty well. Unless there is some sort of drama on the team the offer would likely be matched. If a team suspected a pending RFA was not worth retaining it's more likely they would dump them before trade deadline. If they are worth 4million a year you could probably do better than a 2nd round pick to the right team trying to get a playoff run started.

    • @CasaleRA
      @CasaleRA 3 года назад

      @jonmendelson1104 3 года назад

      @@cameronward9443 If GMs weren't afraid to use it there's still value in using offer sheets. In 2010 the Sharks offer sheeted Hjalmarsson from the Hawks for 4 years,$14M ($3.5M AAV, 5.89% of the cap) right after they won the cup. The Hawks matched the offer sheet but weren't able to afford to re-sign Niemi afterward and the Sharks swooped in and signed him to a 1 year $2M deal. Whether or not the Nemo signing was great for the Sharks in the long run is a different story but it could absolutely be weaponized.
      The Lightning this year (say what you want about the Kucherov situation) looked to be cap strapped and had 2 reasonably interesting RFAs in Sergachev and Cirelli. Each player got matching $4.8M AAV deals but giving one of them a higher offer sheet could've forced them to choose which they wanted to lose. Of course they'd have waited the full 7 days and attempted to get the other play locked up in that time before matching and it's unlikely both of them could be offer sheeted simultaneously by the same team unless the pick compensation didn't overlap.

    My only Cleveland Barons story: In Feb 1971 my father got tickets for a Canadiens game in Montreal. They were hosting the Minnesota North Stars. As a 13 year old I was super excited at the notion of seeing my first NHL game and my favorite team, the Habs. My parents and I flew from Fredericton to Montreal and stayed at the Laurentian Hotel. We went to the game and it just happened to be the night that Jean Beliveau scored a hat trick and his 500th goal. The place was nuts. Two North Star players were from my neighborhood, Danny Grant and Buster Harvey. Now the Cleveland Barons part. My father got great tickets for the game the next day between the Cleveland Barons (Minnesota's AHL farm team) and the Montreal Voyageurs. Ken Dryden was playing for the Voyageurs at the time. In the morning of the game, I got to have breakfast with Tom Polanic, a player on the Barons. Then ran into Rusty Staub (le grand Orange) in the lobby of the hotel. Exciting times for a 13 yr old. The following year I got to spend about an hour with Beliveau when he visited Fredericton.

    I definitely think at least one offer sheet will be used this summer. This is the best RFA class in a long time (Makar, Hughes, Dahlin, Heiskanen, Petterson, Svechnikov, Kaprizov). I also think that signing an offer sheet is a better idea than people realize. To trade for most of these high profile RFA's it's going to cost a lot more then four firsts so it's smarter to sign them because contenders don't care about picks.

    Can please make a video explaining the ELC slide rule?

    • @jonmendelson1104
      @jonmendelson1104 3 года назад

      Grabbed from the CBA FAQ on capfriendly:
      If a player who is signed to an entry-level contract and is 18 or 19 years of age (as of September 15 of the signing year), does not play in a minimum of 10 NHL games (including both regular season and playoffs; AHL games do not count), their contract is considered to ‘slide’, or extend, by one year. For example, if a player signed an ELC for three seasons from 2015-16 to 2017-2018, and their contract slides, their contract is now effective from 2016-17 to 2018-19. An exception to this rule is that if the player is 19 on September 15 of the first year of their contract, and turns 20 between September 16 and December 31, their contract does not slide.
      Players who sign at 18 years old are eligible to have their contracted extended for 2 seasons. This extension does not apply if the player turns 20 between September 16 and December 31 in his signing year. Signing bonuses do not slide, and are paid to the player regardless of a slide, this causes the annual average of the players contract to change, and therefore the cap hit decreases for this player.

    Can you do a video summarizing the knights expansion draft and all trades that got them to where they are today? I can't say im a fan, but those that are are livid when hearing they had it too easy, so im curious whether they have a point that it was just crazy good trades they made. I seriously doubt it, but willing to hear about a full summary.

  • @ericscottstevens

    A second string goalie can be readily found in UFA/trade and afforded more than a second string center. So this is a telling/cautionary tale about selecting goalies high in the entry level draft as there seems to be a surplus of veteran net minders in UFA than trying to locate and competitively sign UFA second line centers or even forwards for that matter.
    So draft skaters and let teams develop and allow goalies to enter the market or find new teams. Mrazek is a key example, Detroit wanted to hang on to Howard way too long and alienated Petr who wanted out.
    Detroit developed Mrazek and he plays in Carolina.

    The only prominent draft pick I can think of who just flat out refused to sign with the team that drafted him was Eric Lindros, for better or for worse. The NHL is more known for its off-ice humble gentleman (regardless of the on-ice extra-curriculars) than any other sport. Even the bad boys of the sport tend to tone it down when they're not actually on the ice - unless your name is Jeremy Roenick or someone like that.

    Just so you know, today is the 43rd anniversary of the NHL permitting the Barons to be merged into the North Stars. The best part was the dispersal draft - the other 4 teams that missed the playoffs plus the Rockies were allowed to pick players from the merged team - and THREE of those teams declined.

    Since the cap is flat for few years, the possibilities of one or two offer sheet might go through this offseason. It's been quite awhile since offer sheet actually goes through (Dustin Penner in 2007-08 from Ducks to Oilers)... Quite an opportunity for teams like NJD and Red Wings to get some quality RFA in the market.
    P.S : No St Louis Blues, you cannot go rampant on offer sheet like in the 90's. Your cap situation is mind-boggling right now.

    • @jonmendelson1104

      While it's been awhile since an OS went through the most recent "successful" OS was more recent than that. The Sharks OS'd Hjalmarsson from the Hawks in 2010 and then signed Niemi after the Hawks used their cap space to match the OS.

  • @jonmendelson1104
    @jonmendelson1104 3 года назад

    One thing you neglected to mention while discussing offer sheets is that if the contract is for 5 or more years the calculated salary is based off 5 years (ie: a 7-year, $50 million offer sheet would be treated as a $10 million AAV deal for compensation purposes rather than $7.14M so it would require an extra first round pick).
    (I swear I have no affiliation with them but here's a plug I feel like could've fit in this video): capfriendly.com is a pretty great site for a lot of this stuff. They have up to date information of people getting signed, details of the contracts, a lot of useful FAQs (waivers, offer sheets, buyouts, ...) and calculators (buyouts, offer sheets, income tax, expansion draft...).

    Can you someday make a video about buyout works? Never really learned how it works

    • @benjaminlynch9958
      @benjaminlynch9958 3 года назад +2

      Easy peasy:
      Money owed to player in a buyout is either 2/3 (26+ years old) or 1/3 (25 and under) of their BASE SALARY on remaining years. Any unpaid signing bonuses will be paid in full. That amount is then paid out over 2x the length of time being bought out - so buying out a player with 2 years remaining will result in 2/3 of the salary owed and then spread out over 4 years instead of 2.
      The cap hit is a lot of math, but fairly straightforward. (1( First step is to calculate money owed by year - including post buyout salary + remaining signing bonuses. This is the Post Buyout Earnings.
      (2) Then a year by year savings is calculated by subtracting the pre-buyout earnings (salary + signing bonuses). Both this step and the last step are on a cash basis which may or may not be the same as the AAV/cap hit.
      (3) finally the cap hit by year is found by taking the original amount owed - again in cash terms - and subtracting the cash savings from step 2.
      The buyout calculator on capfriendly.com is super useful when looking at individual players as they have both cash figures and cap figures for every player, so this arithmetic become trivial to calculate and they have done so on the site.

They have had like 10 + picks in the last couple drafts, only 3 years before they need to be signed, only 50 contracts max , still need NHL contracts (Chabot,Tkachuk guy on the team already etc) guys like Stutzle already signed and playing, bottom line they are gonna get to a point where they will not be able to sign/keep some of these recent draft picks. His wife studied to be a doctor (in the US) and she needed to do her residency, but that would have to be in the US. I imagine she could've tried to get her studies recognized in Canada and do her residency there, but it's a cumbersome process and since he was UFA and could technically choose where he wanted to be, they might as well try in the US directly and save themselves the trouble of pausing her studies.
      Of course, there might have been more than that. As Shannon said, when you go to arbitration things get sour pretty quick. If I'm not mistaken, the team writes a document arguing their position and why you don't deserve as much money as you're asking, which is never going to make a player happy; and the GM won't appreciate the bind you're putting him in and having to dedicate so much time to your contract when he probably has many other things to take care of. Players who go to arbitration usually get traded sooner rather than later. Joel Edmundson did it to STL and he mentioned knowing it would get him traded (it did, he got sent to Carolina.)

      Grabbed from Pension Plan Puppets (did a google search of "can prospects be traded after the NHL trade deadline and this came up):
      "Any player traded after the deadline is not eligible to play on a team's playoff roster. It happens very rarely, usually after a team is out of action, and they get someone with term. This might happen as teams look to get players for expansion draft reasons."
      I recall seeing this a few times, the player just can't participate in any of the team's games until the following season. The trade deadline is merely the last day that you can add players to your roster for that season's games.
