Hey, Shannon. Do a video on some of the basic strategies in hockey. The three zones, how attacking teams try to "lock" defenders into their own (defending) zone by cycling the puck, defensemen manning the "points" to keep the puck in the zone so they don't have to worry about offsides. Changing on the fly (not allowed in soccer) and how icing brings the puck back to the defending zone AND prevents the defending team from changing players so defenders get tired. Trying to make a complete line change while holding the other team in their own zone. Etc.

Dude this is immensely helpful. I never got into hockey because I could really only get into sports that I've personally played and understand, growing up in the desert with a town that only has 1 ice rink, the opportunity to play wasn't there. I didn't enjoy watching it on TV either but I went to a live game once and had the time of my life and knew right then and there that I needed to get into this sport and understand it more.
I've learned the surface level basics but learning about things like what a "Neutral Zone Trap" is and why a team might use it is the juicy shit that I really enjoy learning. Thanks for taking the time to put this together and for doing it so well. Also really liked your analogy of comparing offsides to football's problem with determining what is and isn't a catch. Putting it that way really helps someone like me understand it better.

  • @LoyalSif

Good video; you should definitely do a series of them. As hockey fans we tend to think others should just take our word for it that it's a great game, and then get smug and defensive when they don't know what's going on and don't bother with it. At first glance it looks like a bunch of guys flailing at a piece of rubber with sticks, with occasional interludes of punching each other...with so many options for entertainment (that's all sports is in the end; a subset of entertainment) people have to understand WHY they should want to watch and spend their money on hockey.

I am so used to watching only Penguins games that when you described the types of lines I thought you were off by a line. I am so used to seeing the Pens have two powerhouse scoring lines and then their third line is like most team's second lines. Their fourth line has even been filled with penalty killers like Matt Cullen.

Thank you for this it was very helpful. I wanted to try to get into hockey for a while but found it is hard if you don't have a team to root for. I am picking the knights because A: they are the newest team and B: my in-laws live in Vegas. That being said since they almost won it all last year I feel like I can't truly call myself a Golden Knights fan until I root for them during a losing season (my own way of judging a band wagoner) so as of now I am a Las Vegas Golden Knights enthusiast.

I don't understand the whole "Vegas won't last 5 years" thing. I think Vegas is going to work, I really do. I get the whole thing with Arizona and putting another team in the desert, but I think Vegas has done a good job marketing themselves from what I've seen, and they've built themselves for the long term right off the bat.
To any Golden Knights fans out there, welcome to the League. Let us show you around and let you find out why we love this sport so much.

People dont even understand why the coyotes are struggling. It was absolutely the worst place in the city to put an arena, take an hour and a half to get to the arena from most parts in phoenix. Westgate was a failure as a shopping center. And before ypu bring up the cardinals its 8 games a year every couple weeks. If the yotes get a new arena near the east, the attendance will shoot through the roof and people will see its not lack of interest. Vegas will kick ass in the market. People who say that are just jealous their canadian city didn't get a team. Same thing will happen when seattle expands as well. All crap talk about how it wont work blah blah. Just not true. Dobt fall for the bs and rumors.

For explaining offsides/icing/or even the goalie trapezoid you should just draw an ice rink on your white board to give a visual bc it's so much easier to explain that way haha, I've tried explaining it to friends and they look more confused afterwards but when you show them it clicks right away

Fireflame626 it’s because no one grew up with hockey but now the next generation is growing up with hockey. Like not every place is known for growing up a 1st overall but the desert grew up Matthews so obviously Hockey in Arizona has a good foothold and much bigger than most expect

I very very recently got into hockey. The thing I found the most bizarre was lines and line changes because the other sport that I followed seriously was European football (soccer) and I kept wondering why they were allowing so many substitutes. It was only later that I understood that there were 4 lines and 3 defensive pairings in each game. And pk and pp are both called special teams. It would be great if you could add that in your next hockey for dummies video (if you make one). Thanks a lot.

For some reason this old vlog came up with today's game reviews and WOW what a blast. Imagine that some thought hockey wouldn't work in Vegas....how wrong was that? Arguably the toughest ticket to get in Vegas. My first game, the seats were $99 in the nose bleed and the same ticket was $950 for the Cup Finals. They sell out standing room for every game and there is no better pre-game anywhere in sports. It's an event! Hammers (in Henderson) was one of the first true hockey bars in the area. Owned by a career minor league hockey enforcer who spent most of the first 2 years teaching his customers about hockey.....Don Cherry style (or as I like to say, the right way). It isn't tennis or golf is it? Hockey was an instant success in the desert for 2 main reasons. It's the most exciting, entertaining sport there is. For most newbies....one game and they're hooked. Secondly, Vegas is a melting pot city; there are fans here from most other NHL cities except Montreal. Bob 'Hammer' Fleming is from Calgary and some his teammates and opponents stop by from time to time. Before the pandemic, watching a game at Hammers was almost like being at the game.....packed, loud with everyone involved. It didn't take long, but I believe Vegas now has as many knowledgeable and passionate fans as any American City.

Not a Vegas fan, but, I am a novice hockey fan. As such, I found this video to be very informative. For instance, I thought that the 1 point from an overtime game was just given to the team that lost in the shootout. Now, you tell me that it's to the team, also, that loses in the overtime period. I did not know that. Thanks for the information.
However, I do have a question that wasn't answered here. I hear, actually, read, other hockey fans use the term "dump and chase." I don't know what that means, Could you give me either a description of it or just an explanation of what it means.
Again, I'm a novice hockey fan. I find the game to be fascinating. For 40-35 years I did not follow hockey at all. I just rediscovered it last year. Part of the reason I stayed away for so long is the fighting that used to happen. I understand that rules have change and I no longer see that many fights in hockey. For me, that is a good thing. In the past, I found hockey fighting to be detrimental to the game and my enjoyment of it. Whatever caused to go away/change, to me, that's good. Your mileage may vary.

Ron Bates Dump and chase is a term used to describe when a player skates past the center line (to avoid icing) and shoots the puck into the offensive zone. They then attempt to beat the defenceman to the puck or take the puck away therefor giving them possession in the offensive zone.
Dump and change is another term you might hear. This is just when a player crosses centre (again to avoid icing) and shoots the puck into the defensive zone in order to give his team a chance to make a line change while the other team collects the puck.

I think the Idea that the fan base in Vegas knows nothing about hockey is a bit overblown. I'm not implying that the city's hockey knowledge is as good as any Canadian city or the northern US, but Vegas does have a history with the sport. The Las Vegas Thunder of the IHL (93-99) and the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL (2003-14) both had desnt fan support and it was not uncommon for a saturday night Wranglers game to be sold out. The NHL played preseason game in Vegas (97-2016) which again, had good fan support. Another thing that must be taken into account is that Vegas is a "transplant" city. Most people that live in Vegas come from other parts of the country and have brought a knowledge of hockey with them. A relatively large number of the population has come from Southern California, Consequently there is a fairly large Kings fan base in the city. Not to mention both Kings and Ducks game have been broadcast in Las Vegas for many years. So, while Vegas is certainly not a hockey hotbed, It does have a higher hockey IQ than it gets credit for.

To quote downgoesbrown "we are sort of like a cult, except for the fact that cultists can occasionally be reasoned with"
Oh and FYI Floyd of Rosedale is the greatest trophy in the world, but I suppose it's not a championship trophy (to anyone not familiar with Floyd you should look it up)

Shannon, thanks for the clarification of why there are so many assholes who are very unwelcoming of the new team. These people are insane, any sports league in the world would be ecstatic to welcome new fans and a new market to their league, but not (a section of) Canadian hockey fans. And they wonder why the NHL isn't bigger in the US. Duh!

You didn't mention the 2 minute major. A penalty that sees the player serve the full time even if a goal is scored. Hockey is the only sport that uses a point system the others use percentage.

The plus minus can also be greatly affected by having a totally incompetent coach. Good example is Dallas Eakins in Edmonton. That is how Nail Yakupov went from scoring 31 points in 48 games and being a -4 player under Ralph Krueger in his rookie season to only getting 57 points in 144 games and being -68 the next two seasons combined under Dallas Eakins.

You should have just called this a hockey tutorial for new fans and left out the team they cheer for. Create other tutorial videos about the game then periodically recommend that people go watch them if they want to know some general aspect of the sport....On plus/minus, I think it should be kept. People just need to remember that it's context dependent. Admittedly, all statistics are context dependent but plus/minus is probably the MOST so.

Skates, that is what players wear on the ice so they don't fall down. Kinda like a shoe with sharp blades on the bottom.😂😂
