      Subban made more than Price. That was a much worse situation. Signing Subban for $9M was really the only rookie mistake Begevin made. He lost his nerve and caved into the press instead of trusting his instincts. PK went toxic when he refused to play in his contract dispute; that's when PK's brand and the money became more important than his teammates. That set the team development back about 2 or 3 years and it will take that long to flush the toxicity out of the system. They're back on the right track now but not there yet. I hope Galchenyuk can get back on track. There's more character on the ice now for him to learn from.

    • @chipahoy3530
      @chipahoy3530 6 лет назад

      My god you know absolutely nothing, Guy. The team development set back 2 or 3 years? The team made the conference finals and semi-finals the following 2 years. After trading Subban they were knocked out in the first and are on pace for missing the playoffs altogether. I'd say trading him was a bigger setback to the team's development than signing him was, based on facts at least. I know those don't matter to you, though.
      Players in arbitration discussion are not allowed to play as per the CBA.. You can't play when you aren't signed, teams can't play players they don't own the rights to. Subban wanted to sign for less than he ended up getting, he just wanted more term because he loved the team. You talk like the guy personally bought your mother from slave-owners or something, how could you possibly know the guy who donated the most of any Canadian athlete in history cares more about money than his teammates? You're talking out of your ass. He was willing to take a cheaper contract, he just wasn't willing to get ripped off immediately following a Norris-trophy. I don't see you complaining about Price's $10.5M contract though.
      Bergevin is the one who decided to drag the negotiations into arbitration because he wanted to pay less than 8 million, the league had a hearing and decided that the norris-winning Subban was worth 9 million, but for 7 years instead of the 8 years Subban's agent was pushing for. Bergevin thought he could pay him less than he was asking but the league had to jump in and tell him that Subban was worth more than he was asking for. Who sounds like the bigger asshole here? Subban was willing to take a deal, and Bergevin wanted a better one.
      If Bergevin hadn't have cheaped out, he could have signed Subban to a good deal for $8M for 8 years. He thought he was smarter than that, turns out he wasn't (shocker), so he ended up having to pay him what he was worth ($9M) instead.

    Man this is depressing... he should've signed Radulov and kept Sergachev + Markov... just a disaster!

    • @soulscanner66
      @soulscanner66 6 лет назад +5

      Your just talking smack about Bergevin because he's French;
      - Radulov would have partied himself to death in Montreal; he also wanted to play in the U.S.; he went for the chicks and the money. It was always going to be a one-year experiment. Bergevin was brilliant for signing him in the first place.
      - Mete is better than Sergachev and a better match for Weber; we needed a mobile defenseman, not a big guy with a good shot; Habs needed a top-line center and got one in Drouin; it was a win-win trade
      - Markov went back to Russia for family reasons because his wife died and he decided it would be better for his kid if he moved back to Russia for now; Bergevin was classy in allowing Markov to miss a large part of last season to deal with his family crisis; also, Markov is too old to play a full season+playoffs; just a hunch, I think he'll be back at the end of the season after Russia wins the Olympics and be fresh for the playoffs.

    • @canucky76
      @canucky76 6 лет назад +1

      Markov wanted way too much money, Drouin will get in the groove of things sooner rather than later, but losing Radulov definitely was a blow.

    • @chipahoy3530
      @chipahoy3530 6 лет назад +1

      Markov also only wanted 1 year. 5 mil for 1 year leaves over 3 mil of cap space for habs to play with and they would have a coherent d-core again. Drouin is probably the habs best player right now, at least offensively. Just not sure about his performance as a center. I see all the same issues in his play at C that Galchenyuk had. All the offensive prowess in the world, but poor defensive awareness and low faceoff ability. If neither is going to be a legit 2-way, I'd say going for size down the middle would yield better results, also Galchenyuk has been awful as a winger and was almost point-per-game as a center. Either way, if the team could play the way it did last night a little more often, it wouldn't matter so much who plays where.
      Radulov was probably the one who wanted too much money, but seeing as we didn't spend it anyway *and* we lost Markov, losing him was really just unnecessary. Habs could have offered an extra 500k and not re-signed one of the AHL players, if they were really that concerned about cap space.

  • @q2.076

    it hurts to know that Montreal could've had a scary blue line (Theodore, Riley, Subban, Sergachev) that could seriously produce offensively and have the best goalie in the world between the pipes. I know drafting is some luck but to know that they could've had that is depressing.

  • @ZachBonnell
    @ZachBonnell 6 лет назад +4

    I don't understand why people think Gallagher is a pest. He hangs around the net but he never does anything dirty or aggravating. Hanging around the crease is annoying for opposing defense, sure, but it's not like he does anything questionable when he's there. And other than that he's just a motor around the ice. Montreal has had a lot of pests over the years in Ribeiro, Lapierre, Lemieux, etc.. but Gallagher doesn't have the big mouth or attitude that any of those players had. He's just a hard worker. He may just be the next captain if Pacioretty moves this summer.

    The draft problem for Montreal was really between the 2008 and 2012 drafts. 2013 and onwards is looking better in terms of getting potential NHL players. Chuck, Gallagher, and Beaulieu were the only players to become NHL regulars for Montreal at some point during the 2008 to 2012 periods. You can see the full draft history of Montreal at: www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/teams/dr00006929.html

    • @soulscanner66
      @soulscanner66 6 лет назад

      Drafting is a crap shoot at best unless it's a Mathews or McDavid where it's more like winning the lottery. Only reason its important is because the press needs to keep on blabbing in the summer months. Look at Beaulieu ... lots of talent, size, defenseman and seems a no brainer in the draft to replace Markov next to Subban ... a couple of months later the guy is in court with his overbearing Dad because of assault charges ... who knew he was a headcase? All of a sudden you're not a GM anymore, you're a family therapist, social worker, and a surrogate father figure. Too bad Weber wasn't there to help deal with that the way he's doing with Mete.

    @kevinbanovic2706 6 лет назад +3

    With the exception of the Weber-Subban trade, if you look at each trade or draft pick individually, Bergevin would get an average grade. The most glaring issue during his reign as GM is team management/roster construction. A lot of moves are reactionary and he ends up fixing one hole while creating another. He definitely looked short term with many trades despite (smartly) avoiding signings that would handcuff the team long term. In the end, the team is not in position to win now nor are they set up to be successful in the future. The best Montreal will be is a a bubble playoff team that could go on a lucky run if Price carries the team on his back.

    When you add it all up, Bergevin has done just fine. Only the Subban trade is questionable simply because Edmonton traded Taylor Hall for Larsson within the same hour. Always believed we could have gotten both Hall and Eberle in a subban deal.
    It was either PK or Patches at the time and Patches was named captain so PK had to go.

    I'm commenting on this before the video finishes, so forgive me if gets brought up.While watching Sportsnest go over Bergevin's recent trade history, I can't help but wonder if he's just trying to bring in more Canadian players. I know some insist it's a Russian thing (as you've just mentioned (and agree with the fact Galchenyuk identifies as an American)) but don't believe that's what it is. Let's not forget this is Montreal. Where you should speak French! I remember grumblings when Koivu was named Captain. Some believe the whole roster should be Canadian players, if not French-Canadian. Montreal's glory days died when lost their hold on the Quebec draft. More recently it feels like their woes are tied with the fiasco that was firing Therrien for Julian. On an aside, yeah, Radulov's contract may be a bit long, but hardly the worst contract out there. Not to mention it's not like Bergevin hasn't done worse.

    Markov would help via power play but he would add to the age and slow problem they have on the back end. Mete is the only Montreal defenceman that has above average speed. Weber is not fast. As well as Benn, Davidson , Alzner. Petry has good speed but overall is a very slow blue line.

    bergevin was the directionless high stakes gambler of GM's. if his moves worked (rarely), you got highs like the 2021 finals run. when they didn't work (which they mostly didn't), you got what the habs were outside of the 2021 finals run: a mediocre team carried by Carey Price with first round exit upside if literally every single thing went right.

    Bergevin was okay and I was supportive of him until the Subban trade, I wasn't against him at this point either I didn't like it but saw the possible upside of it. But right after that it's been weak decisions one after another except for signing Radulov and trading Pateryn for Benn. I was very disappointed by the loss of Andrighetto. Sergachev vs Drouin is ok but the picks make no sense for me.

    My perspective is that MB has won many smaller deals, and done very well with players like Petry, Renault, and now Armia (an excellent example of weaponizing cap space.) And I'd agree his drafting has been a C+, which relates to my next point: MB doesn't understand building a contender within a cap and he is awful at asset management. Every major trade has been a substantial loss AND crippled the team. For example, the team desperately needed Sergachev after the disastrous Subban trade, but instead traded him for a LW who they insisted could be converted into a C (which is absurd.) Going from Subban, Beaulieu (who did well in MTL) Sergachev and Markov to the tire fire they iced this past season is just amazing. He has gutted the team (see also Gakchenyuk) and what's worse is that he is actively engaged in a retool wherein the team has no top 6 C (or top 4 D) for several years but now he has a declining Weber on a massive deal and a 30 year old Price on a similar one. By the time any of those young players are effective NHLers those two contracts will be absolutely untradeable garbage. It's really a masterclass in dismantling what should have been a good team, and yet he's still here, lying about an obvious rebuild (and getting that wrong too)

    Bergevin screwed up twice with Subban.....he had an opportunity to sign PK for $25Mil over 5 years in late 2012 or 2013 instead of having to dish out $72Mil over 8 yrs in 2014. Not only did he failed to assess the potential value of his young star player at the time but cost his employer an extra $4Mil per year thereafter until the trade in June 2016, an $8Mil+ gaffe.
    Had Subban been offered and signed a 5 yr. contract in 2012/13, Bergevin would have had the most sought after contract in his hands should he decide to trade him thereafter. Bergevin had the Subban case totally under his control until the $72Mil contract which turned into a deterrent for most GMs. A a self-designed double whammy.
    How interesting to observe that Price's new contract would appear to show poor judgment again on MB's part whereby Price's future value is being over-compensated. The man has demonstrated his short-term counteraction more often than his long-term ponderation.

    You got a couple of things wrong. First of all, the drafting of Galchenyuk is a HUGE win. To start, Montreal had someone who will because legitimate superstar on defence in PK Subban. And Subban is way better than Morgan Rielly. So the hole really is created when you traded Subban. On the other hand Montreal had a huge hole in C and they haven't had anyone remotely good since Saku Koivu. Galchenyuk was desperately needed. So what did they do after drafting him? Have Therrien play him on the wing, or 3rd line with scrubs getting 12 minutes a game. They ruined his career by not developing him (or anyone else for that matter). Galchenyuk was the "duh" choice so I don't see how Bergevin gets credit for this one.
    Next Bergevin drafted McCarron. They have a very good scout in Trevor Timmins who didn't want to draft McCarron. Bergevin actually overruled Timmins (who wanted Theodore) to draft McCarron. How is it not a huge loss? And of course since drafting McCarron they tried their darnest to turn him from RW to C when everybody who ever watched a game of hockey knows he isn't one. But he's C over Hudon (one of the leading scorers in the AHL) and yup, Galchenyuk.
    Also, in terms of Radulov, he lowballed Radulov. He matched Dallas' offer in desperation AFTER he lowballed Radulov. Radulov outright came out and said he's angry about that. Similarly he had no backup plan for Markov.
    The asinine Subban trade speaks for itself so I won't mention it. The Sergachev trade. Sergachev's ceiling supposedly was Markov level, in other words, without the injuries a legitimate Hall of Fame level. Definitely a bona fide 1D. What did Bergevin do? Trade him for a problem child French LW, in a position where Montreal is already stacked. Then they pretended he's a C before final admitting he isn't. You traded a potential Hall of Fame 1D for a LW, who is older and has off ice problems written all over it (and I'm sure they did it because he's French). Who is stupid enough to do that? Not only that, he did it the year they let Markov walk, traded away Beaulieu and Emelin all in the same year. He gutted the enire LD and traded away the only salvation.
    Then there are the signings. Alzner for $4.5 million? My kid plays better hockey than Alzner (exaggeration). Schlemko? Morrows? Froese? Shaw for 6 years at $4 million? Re-upping Drouin for more money after lowballing Galchenyuk even though Galchenyuk produced far better numbers in far fewer minutes? Price for $10.5 million? Plekanec for $7 million? Oh and DeLauriers has be re-upped. Who cares they still don't have a first line C and a top pairing D (that's right, Webber isn't one any more), they got DeLauriers.
    Trading away Eller. Andrighetto. Not developing any players and that the Laval Rockets is a joke. That Sylvain Lefebvre still has a job despite the garbage job he did?
    Worst GM in the league. Worse than Chiarelli, Benning, Sakic and Dorion.

    • @jordanjohnston655
      @jordanjohnston655 5 лет назад

      Sergachev a bona fide #1 dman you say. Believe it when I see it.
      We were going nowhere with Emelin and Bealiaeu. Both awful I their own end.
      Loved Larry and rooted for him, but he was given all the opportunities to excel in Montreal and never could get it together consistently.

    So drafting was OK, thought not spectacular, and the trades started out with wins, to huge losses. With King/Ott they certainly wanted to bruise their way through the playoffs that year, but they were also on their way out.

    Look at the size of the C (the chest crest) .. that's HUGE. (it probably looks more huge since the jersey is a size medium or perhaps a size small - optical illusion) On a size XL or XXL, that huge C is probably more normal looking. Funny .... optical illusion.

    This video might need an update. MB being good is a...questionable thing now among the loyal loonies that I love! We used to mostly agree he was awful but now there is a debate on if he is bad or not. McCaron was a bad pick even if I think he was a serviceable 4th line plug with size. We could've gotten size later. Scherebak was bad but had potential, can't blame that.

    A year later, this analysis looks pretty sound. But not enough emphasis on the loss of Radulov, Markov and Emelin, all of whom could still be in Montreal if Bergy knew his job. (Noted the comment near the end about Bergy surprisingly not being good on picking defencemen.) See Poor Len Canayen waltwhitemansworld.blogspot.com/2018/09/poor-len-canayen-alexei-emelin-goes-home.html
    Trouble is, neither Bergevin nor Molson are the kind of guys to admit a mistake.
