MTL were my fav team. When Roy went to COL, they were my fav team. When he retired, I became a homer (TOR). Roy shaped my fandom. I have over 50 cards of his. Best goalie ever!
It was really special to watch him play in person in Denver. Those were the glory days for the Avalanche. Best goaltender ever.
Patrick Roy was the reason I started loving hockey.... As a kid i used to set up goal posts and throw a bouncy ball against the wall and "save it" while watching the game... I credit him with my love of the game and for that he's my favorite player :)
I did the exact same thing lol
Patrick Roy is still the greatest athlete I’ve ever witnessed with my own eyes. When he was on, he was on.
Three Conn Smythe trophies. He was the best on the biggest stage. Roy is for sure the GOAT.
He is phenomenal and hasek was insanely good
Only player to ever do it
Would have loved to see Trechiak from Russia 🇷🇺 play in the NHL
My favorite goalie of all time! So glad I was able to watch him growing up here in Denver
Same!
00-01 was amazing watching Raymond get the cup he is my all time fave dman I cried legit tears
Agreed Roy best goalie ever. I remember reading a poll of coaches ask who do you want in net during playoffs, the unanimous answer. Patrick Roy.
As a relatively new hockey fan in a non Hockey area these videos are great! It really helps me learn the history. Thank you!
"You can take out his appendix, but you can't out his heart." - Shannon on Patrick Roy, 2019.
He was truly the master between the posts. It was fantastic to watch as a leaf fan. I really wished the leafs and Habs played in the 93 finals.
I don't really care what the stats/records indicate, Patrick Roy is the greatest goalie of all time.
Quick edit: playing road hockey back in the 80s-90s all I ever wanted to be was goalie. Only Mom yelling at me to come in for dinner would get me out of that net.
The stats and records show that Patrick Roy is one of the most dominant playoff performers in the history of north American professional sports and is therefore the greatest. His only rivals in that regard are Michael Jordan and Tom Brady as far as I'm concerned. In fact, I'll fist fight anybody who claims otherwise!
Marty stuck around forever and racked up lots of regular season stats, but nobody comes close to Roy regarding playoffs. Plus he beat Marty head to head in the finals and collected another Conn Smyth even though he was far past his prime. He's simply the greatest.
hasek was better
@coady beastly conn smythe means something but at the sametime not always the best player wins it. I thought grant fuhr was awesone in edmonton when he won 5 cups but he never got a conn symthe becaue he played with messier gretzky. If u win u win and broduer could of won a conn smythe anytime.
Hasek besides when he went to detroit never had a decent team. Patrick Roy alway had good teams his whole career. When montreal was finally getting bad he got traded to a jauggernaut team in colorado. Sakic Forberg Kamensky conn smythe winnner claude lemeuix, tangay, drury hejduk, on defene ozolinsh krupp, black, adam foot, ray bourque. Omg this guy had a fucking jauggauranut team in colorado. Who did hasek have michael peca lmao. Hasek had a bunch of grinder and mucker compared to roy and he single handedly carried that team to almost a stanly cup.
What u going to say now about roy 93 team? Denis savard, mark recchi, a young john leclair, vincent damphoue, brain bellows. kirk muller, mike kean and the list goes on and on and that montreal team wasnt talented as the colorado team roy had but hasek never even had a team as talented not even close to roys 93 team.
Give me a break. Dominik hasek kicks his ass anytime. He beat him on a duel at the olympics when roy had a bunch of hall of famers and hasek had like 5 or 6 nhlers on his team in 98 nagano. And he beat him in game 7 when hasek was on detroit and roy was in colorado head to head again
@Murphy Habs if hasek had same teams roy did he would have 8 stanly cups
@Murphy Habs lol Hasek led the league in save percentage for SIX YEARS. Only reason he doesn't have more Cups is bc he played on shitty teams.
Roy is hands down the best of all time.
That's crazy how much better he was in the playoffs. I was young when I saw him play however I remember that he used to own Dallas and I couldn't stand him.
Belfour usually raised his game when he went against Roy. I seem to remember those 2 having great series against each other.
Remember that time Roy stick handled across the blue line and deked Gretzky lol ? Anyone ?
Everyone remembers when he carried it up but no one seems to remember he pulled the spinorama on Gretzky on that same play
Kinda why he was able to go around Gretzky, he didn't think Roy was going to cross centre.
He would have scored if he didnt get a penalty lmao
Red line
I’ve seen a video
My favorite goalie ever. Legend.
Fact
Patrick Roy a Colorado Avalanche Legend forever. Always remember his battles with Detroit Red Wings
Patrick Roy is my all time favourite goalie by several miles. He also is pretty close to be my all time favourite hockey player overall aswell!
I started watching NHL during the early 90s around the time Teemu Selänne started with Winnipeg and I instantly became Canadiens fan. When he was traded to Colorado I became Avalanche fan.
I always loved goalie, grew up a habs fan born 99, Jose theodore really made me love the position
The greatest Hockey player in the history of the game. Even more conn Smythes than "The Great One". Goaltender is the most difficult, most important position in all of sports. Right next to quarterback.
As a Detroit fan I hated Patrick Roy but we did have some awsome games agianst him. After he retired i can look back and say yeah he is one of the best if not the best.
Same here.
Same. As a Wings fan I hated him when he was with Montréal and then Colorado. I absolutely loved watching the Wings destroy him in that blowout in Montreal and loved that 2002 game 7 when he showboated and dropped the puck into his net in that blowout as well. I just hated how damn good he was, he was a different animal in the playoffs but a bit of an egomaniacal buffoon as well. I will say, he IS the best goaltender of all-time
Watched him stone wall the Stars for years in the playoffs....I can still respect the greatness, he was so hard to beat.
The Stars only played against Roy in the playoffs in 1999 and 2000, winning both series in 7. Make no mistake, Roy is probably my favorite goalie of all time, but the Stars and Ed Belfour came out on top both those times.
I can’t really hear what the Hockey Guy said because I got my 4 Stanley Cup rings plugging my ear 😂
Awesome video! Thanks so much for posting and making this video! Patrick Roy was my favourite goalie as a kid because I was a huge Avalanche fan!
My favourite goalies as a kid were:
1.Roy
2. Hasek
3.Belfour
A gazillion thank yous Shannon. I watched alot of hockey at a young age early 80s islanders, oilers , habs and canucks. Lived for hnic each weekend.
When I 1st seen Roy in the 85 86 playoffs and his will to win i was hooked. He became my Idol. Since that day HaBs fan because if him. When he was left in so long that horrible saturday night vs det by tremblay and demanded traded days later I was lost. Lol I followed him as an av as much as possible here on the east coast.
The 86 ,89 and 93 finals tripx were magic. His 89 season he was undefeated at home in reg season.
As an av in playoffs, the 96 and 01 runs were awesome esp the cup for Ray so happy they both had that time spent on the same team after yrs as mtl bos rivals.
Youre doing things i enjoyed doing wirh hockey info but in my case without the confidence to publicly present it. 😢
Big thanks again Thg!!! All time fan of what you do keep er going!!!!!!!!
A couple of my favorite Roy moments were the statue of liberty goal and him getting bandaged up after the fight with Vernon. DRW fan here if you couldn't guess. In all seriousness though, he was a brutal opponent. The Wings seemed to be the better team so many times but then they still had to beat Roy, and just couldn't some years. He has the personality on the ice that you love if he's on your team and hate if he isn't. He's in the rotation of best goalie of all time, and for what I would want is probably the best.
PATrick, PATrick, PATrick! :)
That playoff wins number could very well stand for generations. Great video, Shannon
For sure the greatest of all time. Really wish I was old enough to remember him playing but his stats and accolades are without question, unmatched. He is what made me want to be a goaltender when I first got I to hockey and did my research about the greats.
These are some of my favorite videos. Love these career retrospectives! Roy and Hasek are like my 1A, 1B guys. I think you can make solid cases for both as “the best I’ve ever seen”. I’ll tell you what though, I don’t know many people who’d bet against Roy in the playoffs.
Thanks for that awesome video about Saint Patrick. He came in at the time I really started to love and understand hockey. Best of the best.
Roy was just an ultra-massive competitor with the mental strength of a mountain. In my opinion, one of his most uncanny abilities was his bounce back from a bad game. He rarely gave up 2 bad games in a row, which is certainly why the Avs won in 2001. In fact, the best thing that could happen for Roy was for a journalist to write a disparaging article about him. That's usually all it took for him to turn it up a couple of notches and run the opponent out of town.
Mind you Roy was also active during the golden era of goaltending. With the likes of Hasek, Belfour and Brodeur, he got to compete with some of the finest goaltenders in the history of the league.
yeah just ask the Nordiques, when they Supposedly had him rattled.. lol up 2-0 in the series... then Roy decides to go full Beast Mode. 😅😅
Thank You for this video, I'm a life long Penguins fan and playing against Roy made the games that much more fun. Pens/Habs/Bruins.....my top three east franchises! I guess you're not an Ulf Samuelson fan....lol!
Roy was my idol growing up, the reason I became a goalie. GOAT in my book.
ROY IS THE GREATEST! I became a fan of the Avs because he went. I follow the Islanders because of him. Wherever he goes I will follow
still can't believe his 33 number is up at the Bell Center for over 15 years, how time flies. my favorite goalie of all time too :)
one of the best goalies of all time.
Saint Patrick
Best goalie to ever do it!
Agree completely. To me Roy is similar to Michael Jordan in that they both changed the way the game was played, both made the game more exciting than it was before them, both were extremely competitive and got even better during playoffs, both started in 1984, both played in the greatest era in my opinion, both are the greatest of all time in what they did.
Hasek definitely changed more about the way goaltenders play more than Roy did. lol
Great job! St. Patrick’s Cathedral was pretty awesome! What a big game player... competitive level off the charts!
Loving the extra goalie videos today
You're statements about Patrick Roy making kids want to play goalie is so accurate in my case. He's my favourite player, not just goalie. 33 is my favourite number, too.
The strange thing about the Patrick Roy/Mike Vernon fight was that they're also good friends lol. Mike Vernon after the game in Montreal ran out to look for Patrick Roy and was instrumental in him leaving the Canadiens after a few drinks and conversation.
It had to be, those guys were good buddies. Hey even brothers can fight in the heat of the battle, that was a war back then.
Oh I know. I grew up with the Battle of Alberta when beating up the other team was a given and even Lanny McDonald dropped the gloves if need be. Then the fans hated the visitors bench as well, it was brutal hockey but you never doubted the passion. I do miss it. It was worse for me being an Oilers fan in Calgary, I had to back that up at school and every recess in the playoffs lol
Nothing strange about that What happens on the Ice unless it’s something super dirty gets left there
I was 12 during the 1993 playoffs. Up until that, I just enjoyed hockey and didnt have a team or player.
As I watched the first round between the Nordiques, I began to notice the Montreal goalie. During the series, I got hooked on Patrick Roy and the Canadiens. Been a dedicated supporter since those 1993 playoffs.
Then I added the Avalanche after his trade and enjoyed 2 more Stanley Cups and supported the Avs until my intetest in them faded after Roy retired.
It was not a good feeling when he retired after the 2003 playoffs. Especially when others like Brodeur, Hasek, Joseph, Belfour played into their 40s. Couldve been more years for Roy. But I enjoyed 11 of his years tremendously🤴🤴🤴
Thanks for the great vid.Hes my Goat also.Followed him his whole career.Man I miss watching him play.
Absolute legend, one of my personal idols for the goaltending position (as a person most definitely not). I'll always say Roy was the greatest of all time and I think his success on the ice speaks for itself.
Patrick Roy my favorite and I was a center born in 77 have so many cards signed cards rookie card 3 2nd year cards signed Jersey and signed stick from game 4 in Fl. In 93 triple overtime
been waiting for this one!
Yep. The most interesting attribute of Patrick Roy is how he can tie the innards of a Bruins fan like myself in knots. I hate him with every fibre of my being for breaking my heart over and over with the Habs and keeping the Bruins from the cup...but then he did what he did in 2001.
Salute brother! ❤. I appreciate the time and dedication you put in to make that video. Roy=Goat
151 playoff wins wow he is the greatest goalie if alltime
i wonder how good Vladislav tretiak would have been if he played in the NHL.
Tretiak also was supposed to be drafted by Montreal but the Soviet Union didn't allow it to happen
We will never know
But he was drafted by Montreal and they still have a great team with Tretiak they probably could have won another cup
Thank you for your honesty
To me he was the greatest goalie since I remember i can remember goalies back in the 70s
Everything you said is exactly how I try to explain to others why Roy was the best. That 94 season with his appendix issue I remember he watched Montreal and Boston play from the hospital. Ron Tugnut played for the Habs. Montreal was hoping Ron would play Boston like he did before when he was with Quebec, where he had that 72 shot or saves win. (Must of been painful for you to watch as a Bruins fan?!) Anyways After Ron and the Habs lost that game Patrick Roy came back very next came with a 60 or 61 save performance winning 2 to 1 in OT. Crazy part was, Patrick was playing with an appendix that could burst at any time. Unreal!!!
PS Thx for putting this out here. Still cant believe you are a Bruins fan and Giving Roy the GOAT status. Lol
That was fantastic! Great job. I really enjoyed that breakdown of Patrick’s career
My friends and I were lucky when it came to playing ice, street or floor hockey. We had a friend who loved Curtis Joseph so he always wanted to be a goalie. Saved up all his money and bought really nice equipment.
As a Leaf fan I hate this guy! However, he is the GREATEST GOALIE OF ALL TIME! Of all the goalies that have ever played, who do you want in net in game 7 of the Cup finals? You want ROY! Mr. Playoff Clutch! Amazing video Shannon arguably my fav player of all time! GOLEAFSGO!
@@USMNTsoccerELITE ha ha dude I can't even justify this idiocy with a comment other than to quote the man himself. "I can't heard what "this guy" said, My Stanley Cup rings are plugging my ears!
Definitely not the greatest goalie of all time.
Excellent point about Roy changing the game, and opening the door for the French butterfly goalies that followed.
Long time Bruins fan over 55 years, but I’m a Patrick Roy fan. Roy in my opinion was the greatest goaltender of all time.
the best goalie of all time never played ix the league Trietrek
Even if Matt Murray doesn't work out he'll have the moniker of the only goalie to win 2 cups as a rookie
I was never a Hans fan (Oilers) but in my old room at my parents house on the wall is a Patrick Roy “The Wall” poster I got at the scholastic book fair in grade 2.
Nick Okona I clearly remember that poster
Excellent Presentation as always. A 20 minute video done in one take straight through without editing.... Only thing missing was a Cat! That darn Shadow is loafing now that he is in the new place.
Price will always be my favorite goalie and player! But as far as the greatest player Roy hands down.He did it best when it counts.
With Roenick being my favorite player during this time period, I can honestly say I wasn't a fan of Roy's. But his ranking as one of, if not, the best goalies to ever play the game cannot be denied.
Unless I missed it, you didn't mention the 10 consecutive OT win in the playoff.
If memory works, started with the cup of 93.
He would say: go for it, I'll make the saves.
And he did.
Yea you missed it because he did mention it
@@pilotamurorei
Alright, I missed it but I doubt everybody knows about a fact that dates over 25 years ago.
@@pilotamurorei
Understandable. Keep in mind tho, only 3 habs player were born when it happens, and they were in diapers.
@@EricCharland Greatest feat in hockey history: Patrick brought the Cup to a team that barely knew how to score.
Looking back one of the smartest picks the Nords/Avs made was the drafting of Jocelyn Thibault.
Keane being moved had to do with a controversy that happened when he was captain of the Habs, he allegedly said that why does he have to speak French while his teammates converse in English. Just type Mike Keane controversy 1995 & you'll find the video.
80s kids idolized Roy, early 90s Brodeur and late 90s Luongo
Luongo would be more appropriate for late 2000s early 2010s
@@USMNTsoccerELITE oh I see uz a troll. I get it now.
80s was Fuhr.
Everybody in a pick up road game in early 80s claimed loudly that he WAS Grant Fuhr on coke.
Quebec makes good goalies
Hasek was better than em All
Another great history video- thanks for this Shannon.
Good old St. Patrick
Great job on this episode Shannon.
I became a goalie during the era of hasek, Roy,richter,Belfore,Salo ect .. I loved hasek and took his number but respected Roy I just hated when he did that move that burned him a few times that Statue of Liberty 🗽 glove save..
Nice, I really dig these "career of"-videos, and this one was one of the ones I've been wanting the most. Personally I think Hasek was the best goalie of all time, but Roy is up there as well. Please do Belfour if you have time someday. Thumbs up!
At the hot trio Roy-Hasek-Brodeur he was least likeable as a person, but oh man he looked huge on the net (not just physically). He had biggest heart and character of all of them and that's what makes him the winner. To me still Hasek is the best goalie on my Era, because in my country it was difficult to see lot of NHL games and what Hasek did in Nagano was amazing. To me it was disappointed that you didn't mention that thing when you did Hasek video. Greatest international tournament by any goalie ever, he basically won the gold.
Very good coverage, Shannon! I still remember the playoffs he started and wondering where Penny was. Joys of being young :P
Come playoff time....he was the GOAT.....he just won when it counted.
When Patrick Roy coached for the Ramparts, they played the Moncton Wildcats in the qmjhl playoffs....the wildcats beat them in 7 games ...the crowd was going crazy and getting on Roy ...on his way out my friend and I wanted him to sign a rookie card of him we had. Patrick , after giving the middle finger to the crowd , was walking off...He saw us , took the rookie card crumpled it and gave it back to my friend ! what a jerk but I still love him! hahahah
Patrick Roy had the best comeback statement back at Jeremy Roenick during his time with the Colorado Avalanche I think it was during the 1996 playoffs
In a bad english that made Roy so lovable, he said "I can't really heard what Jeremy says, because I got my 2 stanley cup rings, plugged in my ears".
@@Ryukasan1 That comeback still makes me laugh every time I hear on TV or on RUclips
@@Ryukasan1 Was that two or three?
Priceless!! Typical Patrick
@@Losrandir Two ! the other was on his finger lol
I always wonder why did he only play 6 games in the 1987 playoffs run?
Love these kind of videos
People that never seen him play, can see him in the way the current goaltenders play. He even was one of the first goalies to play with the bigger, lighter and modular equipment.
Agreed, the best money goalie ever! game 7 Stanley cup finals OT! I want Roy in net...first official fav hockey player!
Great video, no debate as who was best of all time...Roy!
Patrick Roy is indeed one of the very best goalies of all times. A guarantee Top 5# goalie - if not arguably THE best NHL goalie. 18 NHL seasons.
4-time Stanley Cup champion - 1986, 1993, 1996 & 2001, 3x Conn Smythe Trophy (Play-off MVP) - 1986, 1993 & 2001, 3x Vezina Trophy (Best goalie) - 1989, 1990 & 1992,
5x William M. Jennings Trophy - 1987, 1988, 1989, 1992 & 2002. BOTH Canadaiens & Avalanche retired 33#.
HOWEVER, what is sad for his career legacy is his lack of International championship competition. Patrick Roy only played ONCE, the 1998 Olympics = No medal.
He was an elite level goalie who time & time again took his teams to championship level, but representing team Canada in IIHF World Championships, Olympics or World Cup or Canada Cup was just not something he cared for. And there are several seasons where he could have done so. Here;
# IIHF World Championships: 1987 in Austerich, 1994 in Italy, 1998 in Swizerland and 2003 in Finland. / 1994 Canada won the Gold and as well in 2003 =
2 Gold medals missed and the 1994 Team Canada was STACKED with tallent.
# Olympic Games: 2002 / 2002 Canada won the Gold medal for the first time in over 50 years !!!
# World Cup: 1996 / Canada won the Silver medal.
# Canada Cup: 1987 & 1991 / Canada won the Gold medal in both.
He would in 2002 or 2003 made it to become an exclusive member of the TRIPLE GOLD CLUB !!!
GOAT and my 2nd fav goalie of all time behind CuJo (I’m a diehard blues fan)
My take from all this was that he....
Was a pretty good goalie?
Sorry for the hot take. Was feeling dangerous.
Stevita Stamerov imagine how good he could have been if he hadn’t insisted on putting rings in his ears.
@@USMNTsoccerELITE cant tell if you are joking or "rode the short bus".
@@smithryansmith I think he's still riding it
Patrick Roy is definitely the GOAT.
You should do an iginla video.Seeing how he just got his jersey retired has an awsome story and is relevant atm it would make sense lol.I'm not a Calgary fan but I loved iginla.
Your the best in the business at what you do shannon
No one wanted to be a goalie when I played either. Roy was my favorite player but I started hockey as a skater. I started late in age and was told I would probably never be very good. And my first season was definitely horrible. I sucked. During the off-season I went and played in a beginner league and would practice in my driveway for hours. I built some confidence and skill. First game in my second season I started the game as a center. My coach was not very confident in me. My first shift I stole the puck at center, skated across the blue line passed the defense and shot it glove high. I scored. I skated back to the bench and my coach came up to me with a shocked look on his face. “What did you do during the off-season?” Lol. Next shift I stood in the slot got a good pass and buried it. Had a great first period but the score was 3-2 for the other team. Our goalie quit. He refused to play anymore. My coach asked if anyone would play goalie. And I was the only one to raise my hand. He looked at me and laughed. I was the smallest guy on the team, by far. I was tiny. But he had no one else. I came in and shut the other team out for the rest of the game. I just emulated what I saw Roy do during games… it worked well. I became the starter from there and played the entire season with pads that were too big for me. Lol.
I played goalie for most of time from then on, except in games when we would play our backup I would play forward. I stopped playing in goalie in high school when the league wouldn’t allow me to play both goalie and forward. So I chose forward because I would have been the backup.
25 years, Habs still have not recovered from that fiasco Tremblay.
Been tough being a Montreal fan, for a long time now.
I'm an Isles fan and I'll say he was the best ever. Certainly the greatest playoff goalie. Four rings, three Conne Smythes.
The greatest goaltender of all time.
I'm a Bruins fan too, and I agree SAINT PATRICK WAS #1
A competitive fire like no other. He would have won 4 Conn Smythes if it wasn't for Sakic's stellar '96 playoff performance.
Being a Montrealer, This was the worst decision our City has ever made in the history of Canada !!
The Habs still haven't recovered from the Roy "trade"!!
Just wow! Amazing stats and career!!
Patrick Roy is definately the GOAT of goaltenders. That 1993 stanley cup run was different, that Canadiens team had an inexperienced Ottawa Senators expansion team that everyone else beat up on. The Habs had 103 points that year as a 3rd place team.
He was a great goalie and he changed the game more then you think.
During his decline, he started the trend "Oversized equipment".
Because of Roy, they changed the game to not allow huge equipment.
Check out his pads and the tent he called a jersey.
Again, good analysis. 'Carrying a team' is overused, but he carried MTL and COL to Cup wins.
