I remember taking my daughter to her first pro hockey game. Actually, her first hockey game at any level. The Wild were playing at home, I forget who they were playing against, and they were down by a goal late in the game, and I remember her asking me "Where's the goalie?" The Wild had just pulled the goalie for the extra skater. So, I had to explain that to her. Wild ended up winning in OT in that game after tying up the game with under 10 seconds to go. It may have been against Columbus, but I do remember it was Fuery's first game as a Wild player.
I really like this series...It's needed. I remember when Nashville started in the late 90s and their fans would cheer when their side iced the puck. With Utah entering the league, it's a great time to do it.
Thanks for these 101 videos, they are great for people like me. I live in a country with no hockey culture at all (Spain), and despite being a fan for a quite long time, there are many details of the game that still may require some clarification... And, that aside, it is always interesting to listen for a good deep talk about these topics.
Hi there hockey guy. I just wanted to say thank you for this video. I fell in love with hockey in the last year because of the PWHL. I really appreciate this video for new fans that isn’t condescending or acting like I’m an idiot for not knowing the basic rules. I’ve been in a lot of spaces in the last year where I felt unwelcomed. While I stuck it out, it can be discouraging for other people looking to learn about the game. Thank you for being informative and welcoming to new fans!
Adding a comment early in the video because I know how good it's going to be and that it's going to be helpful to new fans. Thanks for this Shannon, as a long time hockey fan I know it can be really confusing for new fans and they might be afraid to ask what's going on for fear of looking stupid (especially if they're Canadian...and I say that as a Canadian.) Keep up the great work.
Thank you. I’m not new to hockey exactly, but I’m trying to really learn the game this season. And man, you are right about hockey fans being kind of hostile toward “newbies.”
I've been watching hockey since I was a little kid and there are still things about the game I don't understand, so this was even helpful for me. Thank you!
@pierresoorden5975 The viewership numbers don't support the statement you just made. This last season viewership went up 8%. It was up double digits in the playoffs. Hence, the reason we are getting expansion.
I started watching hockey in the mid 70's what I found to be helpful to understand the game was Peter Puck and no I'm not talking about Pocklington but the cartoon series they had in the intermission between the first and second period. They were informative and fun for kids to watch.
Sounds like a commenter might have called you a "newbie" which inspired this video. Thanks to them we have a great, new video to disperse to anybody we know that can get value learning from a top, chill, knowledgeable NHL influencer on YT. Bonus : He's got some humor too!
One of the worst injuries I had in my young hockey life was a cross check to the back in a summer development camp in Alaska at like 12 years old. Made sure I had new pants with hard plastic in that lower back zone before the next season started.
As a long time hockey fan, with the inconsistency in the calls made I am still continually baffled and mystified at what is and is not goalie interference.
Another item: The fact that not only can you substitute a player while the game is still playing (including pulling the goalie), not only you can substitute entire lines, but you frequently do it in less than one-minute shifts.
I always thought the same thing about not touching the puck because the whistle will blow. They also dont tocuh the puck and let everyone rush back out of the zone if its offsides. Just touch it and have a faceoff. By leaving it the team will no matter collect the puck and your forcing your teammates to rush out of the zone. Its like there afraid of the faceoff.
Hey THG, been watching you a while. I’ve been a hockey fan since 2021, became a kraken fan when they came into the league. I have a hard time learning what defensive stats to look at as “what makes a good defenseman and what doesn’t”. If there’s a prior video on this, I’d love a link or an explanation if you have the time. Thanks for the great information and insight 🤙
Personally, I like that you chose to cover hockey over the other sports. While I basically understand them, they don't hold as much interest for me. And when I don't understand something, it doesn't matter much to me, since I'm not all that interested in those sports. As for this video, I think it's a good idea to have someone explain certain aspects of the game to newer fans.
12:47 So what happens at the end of the 5 minute penalty? If both come out of the penalty box after 5 minutes, isn't that 6 on each team on the ice? Thank you for the replies.
Completely agree with getting rid of the trapezoid and the instigator. We never needed that stupid trapezoid and every Devils fan would give a huge round of applause for it's demise.
The 2 min instigator penalty is WHY we have less violence. Coaches get pissed at being short-handed for that, and if their was no punishment for starting a fight every time someone lands a legal hit .. we would go back to enforcers.
I was a baseball fan before I started watching hockey and in baseball it seems you have to know a thousand things before you really understand the game, but hockey was so simple. The only thing it took me a while to grasp was the offside rule. That was in 1970 when I was 9 years old. They've done nothing since but make the hockey rules more & more complicated to a point where it's now ridiculous. That's why there is so much complaining about the officials--the rules are so arbitrary that you never get anything called the same way twice. I never blame the officials because the rule makers have made the game impossible to officiate. The trapezoid is also another unnecessary complication. That rule was put in to stop one player--Marty Brodeur. Brodeur hasn't played for a long time so it's time to get rid of the trapezoid. It's a relic of a past time.
The Marty Brodeur zone penalty is so stupid. Most goalies suck at playing the puck. I can’t believe they added a rule/penalty all because Brodeur was incredible playing the puck.
I have two favorite NFL teams and I can confirm: smart, rational, decent people I know can lose their minds when they hear this. And I say it all the time: I HATE offsides replay. I thought I was for it before they started reviewing it. I was wrong. I've never hated a rule in any sport as much as I hate the way it kills the momentum of a game.
My thoughts about kicking the puck into the net or direct it into the net should be exactly the same. I think the NHL should allow players to kick the puck into the net. It doesn't happened to often and it won't be such a controversial discussion for the refs or the fans. It's like.. "Ok, it went of his foot it is a goal end of discussion"
Here's an April Fools idea for Shannon: record a video and add cringey dramatic background music that some people put on their vids thinking that will spice it up
My son is an avid hockey fan who has dragged me kicking and screaming into hockey. I was already following college and pro football, basketball, and baseball. I literally had 3 TVs in my bedroom so I could watch my Orioles, NBA, and March Madness. Then my son kept pushing the hockey playoffs so my husband (an OTR truck driver) added a 4th TV! 🤦🏻 I'm pretty sports savvy, but, sorry, dude, this is not a 101 video. This is at least 105 material. I appreciate the effort, but like many experts, you're assuming newbies know enough of the basics to follow. I really don't. I had to keep stopping the video to Google terms. I'm more confused now than I was before I started.😳 Slow down. 🚧 I had to stop and backup the video several times. I'm sad, 😢 but I finally got too frustrated and gave up.🛑 Maybe I'll come back and re-watch closer to the season. We'll see. 🤷🏻 But thank you.
Ive always said the solution for these long reviews is, the refs get 60 seconds to review a play, if a decision isnt made in that 60 seconds, the call on the ice stands, the main point of the coaches challenges is for the blatantly obvious goalie interference and offside. Not to see if a guy is an inch offside. But yeah, the officials should have 60 seconds to review a play
THG is your first stop to learn about hockey. Shannon is down to earth, calming, and super informed. 🐐
Plus, cats! (and bunnies!)
The jersey collection vs rare cat sighting.

This is more of a "refresher course" disguised as a "newbie" series . Always love yah work Shannon , wicked good stuff as always .

Dear New Fans
THG makes video's without pants (I'm just kidding).
#facts
The burden of proof falls on him, though😂
Good video! New fans are always welcome!

These videos are the best, thanks for the content. Happy long weekend!
Good refresher for longtime fans too.
Goalie Trape 2010.
I went to a Panthers game in one of their first couple seasons. At the time, the fans didn't understand the "dump-n-chase" component of the game.
i think most fans don't understands how important the coach is with the line changes and stuff
"Scanners" at 4:40. Nice little buried Canadian sci-fi movie reference. A+
Need more eyes to grow the game great video idea
Thank you. I’m not new to hockey exactly, but I’m trying to really learn the game this season. And man, you are right about hockey fans being kind of hostile toward “newbies.”
Always appreciate these videos
Utah fan here. Thank you for all these videos!!
I've been watching hockey since I was a little kid and there are still things about the game I don't understand, so this was even helpful for me. Thank you!
Obligatory Like and Comment for algorithm and growing the game. Hockey is an awesome sport and i hope it can grow to be as big as NFL and NBA
that can't happen. hockey is a super regional sport unlike the others, the NHL just pretends that it is not
@pierresoorden5975 The viewership numbers don't support the statement you just made. This last season viewership went up 8%. It was up double digits in the playoffs. Hence, the reason we are getting expansion.

Thank you! My gf is a CBJ fan and I’m getting into it myself but never really watched or cared for hockey before now
One of the worst injuries I had in my young hockey life was a cross check to the back in a summer development camp in Alaska at like 12 years old. Made sure I had new pants with hard plastic in that lower back zone before the next season started.
Fans gatekeep hockey like crazy then act confused when it's not more popular
"It's Bettman's Fault": Every fan in Canada says that's why Canada hasn't won a Cup since 1993.
Not every fan, just most 🤠
Cmon Shannon we all know by now that the magic eight ball in bettman's office is what decides all goaltender interference calls🤣😂😆
I thought he was flipping a coin in his office. Thanks for the clarification.😃
I've never seen any of these things cause controversy in any hockey game anywhere ever.
What do you have against hockey that makes you never watch a game?
😂😂😂
Offseason is THG season. Thanks for filling the airwaves, man.
Goalie interference is the most commonly inconsistent calls
Off sides really confused me.
As a long time hockey fan, with the inconsistency in the calls made I am still continually baffled and mystified at what is and is not goalie interference.
Look at this noob asking if people still call each other noobs. 😅😅😅 jk love ya
I’ve been watching hockey since ‘96 and I still don’t understand the face-off rules.
Superthanks!!! This will be great for my sis and mom...
As a newer-ish fan, I’d like to add:
HOCKEY RUNS IN FAMILIES WORLDWIDE, so anticipate seeing some unusual last names repeating
That scanners reference though
What about the 'foot in the crease'? try to explain that one...
Goalie interference is still confusing to me how randomly it's called.. and I've been watching for 30 years lol
"full-on Scanners" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Another item:
The fact that not only can you substitute a player while the game is still playing (including pulling the goalie), not only you can substitute entire lines, but you frequently do it in less than one-minute shifts.
About offsides, the frame by frame is happening with soccer and VAR now. It's getting controversial now.
Why isn’t icing on the list? Needs its own video, right?
I always thought the same thing about not touching the puck because the whistle will blow. They also dont tocuh the puck and let everyone rush back out of the zone if its offsides. Hockey 101: Explaining Elements of the Game to NHL Referees. FTFY!
It's Bettman's job to be the guy who's fault it is.
Very sublime, sir.
Thank you
Bookmarking this send to people I want to get into hockey
Wasn’t going to watch since I’m not a new fan. After seeing what was #1 on the list I decided to stick around
Personally, I like that you chose to cover hockey over the other sports. While I basically understand them, they don't hold as much interest for me. And when I don't understand something, it doesn't matter much to me, since I'm not all that interested in those sports.

I've been watching hockey for over twenty years, and I don't understand the "rules".
might there be less penalties and more flow to game if play man to man coverage up and down ice?
Completely agree with getting rid of the trapezoid and the instigator. We never needed that stupid trapezoid and every Devils fan would give a huge round of applause for it's demise.
Love the black and baby blue! #UtahHC
The 2 min instigator penalty is WHY we have less violence. Coaches get pissed at being short-handed for that, and if their was no punishment for starting a fight every time someone lands a legal hit .. we would go back to enforcers.
But we see more fights from clean hits than dirty ones 😂

2 players not 1, Marty Turco as well
you can crosscheck people 24 times but the one time you crosscheck and the guy falls down you get called
but the cross check needs to happen at least 8 times or its embellishment and they both get the penalty
The Marty Brodeur zone penalty is so stupid. Most goalies suck at playing the puck. I can’t believe they added a rule/penalty all because Brodeur was incredible playing the puck.
cross checking when inappropriate or goes too far?
what is there not to like about hockey?
i have been watching hockey for over 30 years. I still dont know what a penalty is, and when it will be called.
Slow day for hockey news....
I've been watching hockey a long time and I still don't get offsides, the rules for it seem convoluted.
Offside was the last rule I understood
for me it was icing
My thoughts about kicking the puck into the net or direct it into the net should be exactly the same. I think the NHL should allow players to kick the puck into the net. It doesn't happened to often and it won't be such a controversial discussion for the refs or the fans. It's like.. "Ok, it went of his foot it is a goal end of discussion"
i can assure you, the word "noob" has not gone anywhere. it's here to stay.
If the NHL got rid of the trapezoid, Shesterkin would have multiple 20-assist seasons no doubt
Playoffs are a war
The sports media is proud to dismiss hockey imo.
boarding is too lenient
Kicked in goals are illegal except when its the team gary wants to win
So in other words, it's all bettmans fault
Fighting....!??
Here's an April Fools idea for Shannon: record a video and add cringey dramatic background music that some people put on their vids thinking that will spice it up
Make the refs watch this video before each game. Sometimes I think they need a refresher.
Cross checking.....this is why every player should wear the kidney blocker 2000.
EA sports taught me ice hockey.
So you are saying they are not quite 100% evil after all?
Just for fun, please explain to a new fan what a two line pass RIP was. 😄
Nice
how about interference and late hits? this is missed so so often.
Breathe on a goalie and gets scored on gets called back other times not
Ok but it's all bettman's fault
If they made it 4on4 after fighting majors Oilers would fight all the time.
I think you should repost this video every time nhl fans get pissed over a controversial call that was actually right
If it's my goalie, itxs interference.
If it's their goalie, it's incidental.
If only the refs realized it was this simple
My son is an avid hockey fan who has dragged me kicking and screaming into hockey. I was already following college and pro football, basketball, and baseball. We don’t call them as “newbs” anymore. Just “normies”… and that’s triggering to them - it’s like saying the 🤬-word.
not productive to focus on commissioner Bettman so much?
sheltering

Yep if it takes longer than that its clearly not obvious enough to overturn. And I'd make it only 30 seconds.
@@jeffanderson3962 honestly 30 seconds is better.
