I gotta say, y'all are always on top of things. Once again, you've come through with some super helpful tips. Thanks, Chelsea, for the suggestions - and Tony for the lead-in. There's been a lot of fog recently, and I've experimented some with it, but this is exactly what I needed to turn the corner from okay to interesting images.
I enjoyed your video and it reminded me that you can't let the weather be a detriment to taking pictures and that you need to use it as an opportunity to take unique and interesting pictures. I recently had the opportunity to shoot in the fog at Poplar Tree Lake in Tennessee and obtained some really good pictures. I wasn't sure of what I would find when I drove to the lake, but the trip was worth the time to go take some interesting pictures.
Just bought SDP last night, the amount of free content you guys put out is great. I only started learning about photography late last year to aid in my travel photography so I'm very new but I've already learned a ton from you two. Thanks!
so on point to show the scene on a sunny day vs a foggy day. well done! was it a conscious coice not to smoothen the water with long exposure or stacking multiple images? I like the look of smooth water and I think it might add to the scene.
Very cool, I wonder how a long exposure would look with the water all smooth and feathery. We rarely get fog here in north texas, but I will try to do something next time. That looked great.
Love the video guys! Do you have any ideas oh how a time lapse of fog would look, and how to approach it? Thanks for making our little nook of CT look cool! Keep the videos coming! I hope to cross paths one day!
Everybody in northwest Europe is cheering right now. The subject off this tutorial is really good. Only rain would beat it as the default weather condition... Although, its default, who needs a plan for that. Foto, its fleeting over heer in the Netherlands, have a plan and make sure its doable fast. Tnx for showing us the composistional traps!
Is the Art and Science of Photography down loadable? In the past I subscribed to an online photography learning course and after a few years the courses were not longer available for viewing. That online course had promised the videos would always be available. And is the material on the SD card the same as the online course or something different? Love you guys!
I live like 10 minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Sometimes the Marine Layer is so thick that you cannot even focus. Same for Ocean Beach wherein you cannot even see the surfers.
great photos and appreciate the explanation - love fog pics - question for you - why did you choose to use the lcd screen instead of the viewfinder please? TFS !
I have to admit, even the zoomed in shot, that had no white or black point, was cool too. Just a different mood. I shoot mostly narrative video stuff, but it would be cool to have a Fog Plan. I'm going to include that.
I wonder why you often seem to take pics through the LCD screen...? The viewfinder is so much better, that's why they build those..:-)...is there something I am missing that makes you prefer the LCD? Thx
my budget is zero dollars at the moment due to a medical issue, but iv'e got an old hand me down g10 i'm playing with. i'd love to get a DSLR and try some of these shots. one day hopefully i can decorate my home in photos i've taken and made prints of.
Tips to take better Fog Photographs focus your lens manually as the auto focus function will generally not work in fog. Increase your exposure compensation + 1 EV (exposure value, increase exposure 1 F-stop or shutter speed) use a tripod for steady shots and focus on elements in the foreground.
i love you guys helping me so much my question is yeah fog is awesome but how do you shoot when the temp is like - 5 degrees like it has been here i live in massachusetts i heard if you bring out your lens lol yeah its attached to a sensor ...when its that cold outside then bring it back inside it can warp or fog i have a camera thats old but not bad its a t3i could you do a vid of temp changes on a sensor or a lens i just have the 18 to 55 kit and a yongnuo 50 1.8 that the auto focus died a week after i got it but what matters to me i know you live in connecticut and its cold there also any cold lens or sensor care tips when its this cold thanx love you guys
Great job Chelsea, makes a lot of sense. Thought your results were very interesting eye candy! Tell me again, why is this the Tony and Chelsea Northrup channel and not the Chelsea and Tony Northrup channel?? Just kidding Tony, no one know the camera like you do but that Chelsea, I often have to side with her when you two disagree......LOL Moonpie
Great video, but is there somewhere I can view the photos you took? It was hard to appreciate them when the video was panning and showing them too quickly.
Thanks for the (foggy) insight...! I love to see extreme weather, but not the dangerous results from it... Mother Nature is a wonder and a beast at the same time!
On a recent trip to Hong Kong I ran into this situation, and was not very well prepared for it. Was using a new camera that was not totally familiar with, and found that auto focus in fog can be REALLY iffy. Also night shots can be a problem, as there is so much diffusion - easy to over expose, so I bracketed most shots pretty heavily. This shot could have been better if I had remembered to drop the ISO down and taken a longer exposure. flic.kr/p/22K1kwX
Tony and Chelsea go out to shoot fog photos. They wind up being CSI photographers as the police drag a dead body from the bay. @1:36 #IFoundHoffa #WhatAreTheChances?
Ok I hate to bother you but I was wondering I’m 13 really young for photography ig lol but I only have $600 to work with and I wanna do wildlife and I would strongly prefer Nikon any suggestions? Btw I love your videos I feel like I’m super young but I still want into wildlife photography P.S. I also need a lens as well
I love shooting in fog! My most popular pic to date was taken on a foggy day. I had taken multiple other pics of the same subject from roughly the same spot, but none of them are as nice because the background across the river distracts from the subject. Pic is here: instagram.com/p/BZ0rhEoF8sx/
Hey ........ a very 'positive' AND 'very enthusiastic' post .... aussi informatiive. We need more of these.
Super cool topic. I love fog! Hard to plan for it.
Just today I had a video shoot... The weather this morning was a disaster but at the end, the rain and the fog really do a great job to the shooting.
One of the better video's you've all done in a while!
I enjoyed your video and it reminded me that you can't let the weather be a detriment to taking pictures and that you need to use it as an opportunity to take unique and interesting pictures. I really enjoyed this video. I will give this a try next time it is foggy, I like the fact you pointed out the black and white points of the images!
Just bought SDP last night, the amount of free content you guys put out is great. I only started learning about photography late last year to aid in my travel photography so I'm very new but I've already learned a ton from you two. Thanks!
Fog is wonderful. I find that upping a exposure compensation a stop or 2 can helps...kinda of like shooting in the snow.
Great tips, I love shooting in fog.
It might be a good idea to shoot long exposure under those bridges until the water becomes same as fog.
Dude, apparently these people don't even give a damn if their whites are blown out...
I like the way Chelsea says important. I noticed it on the GoPro video to. Love shooting in the fog in Toronto. Keep up the great videos!
Great tutorial Chelsea & Tony. Thank you for sharing.
Good tutorial that is easy to follow and understand. Liked the subject matter and context and will try and find a foggy day!
Very helpful info! Especially about including foreground elements to establish a black point. Thank you
I’m impressed on how well you two articulate your thoughts and tips. Great work guys!
Always worth your videos..... always get to know something by watching your videos..... keep it up guys!!!
Love the coffee mug.
Last winter I got a great fog shot at the end of my street. Normally it looks pretty ordinary, but the fog really transformed it into a cool shot.
Thanks Chelsea cool topic, thanks to your driver also.
Toni and Chelsea ! Your video capability is 5 levels up . this is prime time editing ! AND ALWAYS GOOD TOPICS AND WELL EXPLANED . Thanks
yep, and playing around with levels and blend modes can do amazing things with seemingly fogged out images.
I love fog in my photos. I don’t get many days of that in Texas, so I have to make the most of it when it comes through.
Great!
¿Any tips to avoid the fog getting inside/outside of camera and damaging the camera/lenses?
Showing the "bad" photo helped a lot to understand your point. Now it is easier to remember what to avoid.
Wow great shots! Thank you for the video, very inspiring!
Good one Chelsea - I could tell when you pulled you’d get some cool shots there.
so on point to show the scene on a sunny day vs a foggy day. well done!
was it a conscious coice not to smoothen the water with long exposure or stacking multiple images? I like the look of smooth water and I think it might add to the scene.
Thanks for all your videos
Y’all are ballin
Super COOL photo i love it!!
Very cool, I wonder how a long exposure would look with the water all smooth and feathery. We rarely get fog here in north texas, but I will try to do something next time. That looked great.
amazing choice of pink Floyd esque music at 3:30 kinda reminds me of echoes
or shine on
Love the video guys!

My wife bought me that lens mug. Got me a good one.
Lens mugs scare me. I'm afraid there is going to be a mix up. ;)
Thanks guys. you are so clever. I'm on my way to a fog shoot
It's so much fun to play with fog.. I love it :D

Thank you for the tips. Incorporating it with my drone.
Nice Tesla! Did you pre-order the roadster?
I live like 10 minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Sometimes the Marine Layer is so thick that you cannot even focus. Same for Ocean Beach wherein you cannot even see the surfers.
Newbie question. Chelsea, did you not need a tripod for the foggy bridge photos?
great photos and appreciate the explanation - love fog pics - question for you - why did you choose to use the lcd screen instead of the viewfinder please? TFS !
Great ideas thank you
Nice tutorial! I'd like to see how it would came out with a long exposure...
Please tell me What stabilizer is the guy sitting on the back using?
I would have been tempted to use a tripod and long exposure to smooth out the water. Is there any reason not to?
I have to admit, even the zoomed in shot, that had no white or black point, was cool too. Just a different mood. I shoot mostly narrative video stuff, but it would be cool to have a Fog Plan. I'm going to include that.
nice photos
I love the Northrups
The lens mug. What focal length is it? What were the settings?
That looks like a 24-70 f/4.
Enjoyed this, especially hard-working Justin. Give him a raise! :)
Thanks for the video, great pics!!
I wonder why you often seem to take pics through the LCD screen...? The viewfinder is so much better, that's why they build those..:-)...is there something I am missing that makes you prefer the LCD? Thx
nice pics, love Sony cameras .
What’s the logo on that hat Chelsea? Great vid btw, thanks.
It's an "Official Stunner" patch that we made for the people in our book group
Thank you so much .
awesome video!
Tony using that cheesy lens mug...
EVERYBODY loves cheese!
I love it. I kind of want one!!
When are you goin to do the review for the Sony a7r 3
my budget is zero dollars at the moment due to a medical issue, but iv'e got an old hand me down g10 i'm playing with. i'd love to get a DSLR and try some of these shots. one day hopefully i can decorate my home in photos i've taken and made prints of.
Were the last couple of photos B&W?
0:00 - 0:10
So, when is your post-apocalyptic movie opening in theatres?
Just same ol' Silent Hill garbage...
I would have give a try to nd filter for this shot, or maybe 50 stack picture ti have smooth water
Is it Tesla you're driving in the video, Tony/Chelsea?
I have the same mug as him!!!
Do you know if it’s possible to connect Bluetooth earphones to the Sony a7r3?
Seems strange not to see Chelsea with a Nikon
I had to order one now 😂

London is always a great spot, right?
More like theseeee
I'm in Phoenix. My fog plan is: Go somewhere else..
Dan H.264 lol ain’t that the truth, at least you have the occasional sandstorm!
I have seen fog here.. about once every 20 years or so.
this would look interesting with a long exp
Love these kinds of videos. I can think of the fall one, the chasing wildlife one. More field videos!
I like the comedy videos you guys make. But I like yoga pants and boots also. :D
Great video as usual guys!!! You are both an inspiration for me as I am a young teenager. You guys are awesome!!
as opposed to an old teenager
Great video, but is there somewhere I can view the photos you took? It was hard to appreciate them when the video was panning and showing them too quickly.
Check Chelsea's Instagram @chelsea_northrup
Tony & Chelsea Northrup thank you.
now that’s what I call..

😎
Thanks for the (foggy) insight...!
I love to see extreme weather, but not the dangerous results from it... Mother Nature is a wonder and a beast at the same time!
I need a fog plan...
The worst weather makes the best photos.
Nice vid, bonus points for Tesla :)
1M before March!
thankyou

I have a location and an idea, but it hasn't fogged since the day I found it.
..."if you can crop that out in your mind"... My thought for the day. Thanks

You can get a used D7100 which is a great camera for around $500
Logan Cressler yeah but I need a lens lol
Logan Cressler ty tho
I always say bad weather makes the best pictures.
Yeah, but I am too old for snowstorms - too cold. I will stick to tropical typhoons and such.
Tony: Your clips are all good and I've always been most amazed by Chelsea but must admit, this time the Model X is competing badly to steal the show!
I love shooting in fog! My most popular pic to date was taken on a foggy day. I had taken multiple other pics of the same subject from roughly the same spot, but none of them are as nice because the background across the river distracts from the subject.
