Photography On Cloudy Days - Mike Browne

- You can shoot awesome photos on cloudy days. I get asked 'How to do photography on cloudy, grey, overcast days' a lot. Look at the light qualities (not quantity) and compose images around the light.
I'm back in Zurich at Pfäffikersee lake where I do the Zurich Masterclass. Last time it was sunny, so this time lets go find some grey day photos

A RUclips photographer that actually composes photos! I love it!
Ha ha - Thanks Jim... MIKE :-)
He's the Bob Ross in photography
There's a lot of joy in photography!
Mike is a fresh air to the photography world. Everyone else is out there yelling about which is the best gear, while Mike teaches about Photography
Thanks Dave... MIKE
What I WANT is someone to tell me all the right settings so that I can take perfect photos...... But what I NEED is someone like you to teach me how to think for myself..... Brilliant tutorial video.... Thank you so much for posting.....
While every other photography channel are arguing about camera manufactures, you sir are doing us the service of teaching us real photography lessons. By the way, you were the first photography channel that I ever watched and have learned a lot since, but I always come back to your channel for real lessons. Thank you and by the way you are looking a lot healthier now at days, keep up the good work.
Thank you for the kind words tron944, please do share our videos too so we can make more! - Melissa pp Mike
Always a good day when Mike Browne uploads a new video. Thank you for everything you do Mike.
So true when going out with other people! They want you to hurry up and that's not a great mindset to be in when you're trying to compose photos. Great video as always Mike
Thank you... MIKE
One of the very best photography instructors. You make people feel like standing right next to you listening to real honest information required to become an outstanding photographer. Thank you Dave
Thank you Dave... 🙏😊
Have to say that i do enjoy watching your videos Mike. Intuitive and easy to digest. Great job.
Thank you Khajak, please do share our videos too so we can make more -Melissa pp Mike
He is an inspiration. Certainly not boring.
Thank you, ask my VA what she thinks.
Mike Brown could be the best, most inspiring and most honest photography instructor on youtube, learned alot from this guy. Many thanks Mr. Brown, keep up the good work
I sound like a well known UK beer commercial - thanks Zoran 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Mike Browne video makes weekend complete..
awww bless your heart - Melissa pp Mike
"Get off your ass...and take some pictures." No better advice has ever been given. Love this video. A good photographer takes great pictures in good light. A great photographer finds great images in any light.
hahaha that sums it all ! -Melissa pp Mike
Only 20 seconds in the video but had to pause to say "What amazing video quality"! The boats are so crystal clear. Everything is.
Thanks CK.. MIKE
Best photography channel on RUclips
Thank you John... MIKE
Especially with clouds you can make very dramatic photos. Bumping up the contrast can give a very eerie feel to the picture.
Or turning them into black and white.
you just make it look easy. u inspire people like me to actually look at things differently. keep up the great work Mike.
glad to inspire you MrAlandrez - Melissa pp Mike
Such a fine teacher. Time watching your videos is time well spent.
I've watch a lot tutorials back few years ago. A lot of RUclipsrs did very good photography, but mike is the best. He is simply explain things in clear way.
Man, I love learning from guys like you. You have a carefree laid back style that makes the entire process fun and educating. Well Done Sir!!
Thank you firemedic75... MIKE 🙂🙏
Excellent lesson. Clear concise no BS and motivational. I'm off out snapping on my dull overcast day.
thank youthevideoark - Please do share it too so we can make more, happy snapping! - Melissa pp Mike
“the guys on the other dock are nice and sharp!”
i like listening to what you’re thinking while taking your shots.
finally somebody explains the correct way to analyse the histogram. so many are quick to advocate no clip either end and a rise in the middle 🙄 thanks mike 👍
glad you like the approach, please do share so we can make more! - Melissa pp Mike
I really like you, you have such a childish (in a good way) and playful soul. You seem so happy and you make me smile!
Thank you so much
I love how you look at photography not just from a technical point of view but from an emotional and psychological if you will. I often feel like going out and taking photos...I love camera technology and telling stories with the pictures I take...but something holds me back from just going outside and taking shots sometimes...the weather, fear of running around endlessly without finding the right motive. You address those "fears" in a way I have not seen on any other youtube channel. Hats off to you, Mr. Browne.
Thank you KnorpelDelux, fear is a product of our MIND, if we can control our mind like how we choose our clothes, that's a power. take a peek of our 7 building blocks/ learn how to think like a photographer here . www.photographycourses.biz/courses/7-blocks-free-sample - Melissa pp Mike
I just wanted to say thanks for making these videos. I know how much time and work they require and you just put them online for free.
Thank you for the kind words Diego, please do share it too so we can make more -Melissa pp Mike
After watching this vid I realised what I might have been doing wrong. I keep trying to take pictures that I think other people would like instead of taking pictures of what I like...And when I listen to Mike he always says:I think that looks nice, I like that, I like this. Maybe it's not the best thing to chase trends and just appreciate the process?
Totally agree, shoot for yourself. I have loads of images that mean a lot to me in terms of location, people etc. Don't chase images for others.
Photograph for yourself, it is less stressing. I found shooting with a Prime and manual focus have helped me to slow down and relax. At first when I got back into Photography, i was shooting to please people just to get approval. But after a while of shooting, I realized
the majority of people did not have any idea of what a good picture was in this cellphone era.
@@davecrissinger8967 I only photograph for myself. I have a lot of photos on my computer, in theory I should be good, but I don't share a lot.
I did share some from weekend before last, a curved railway line with lots of fashionable lens flare, a dead tree outlined against an almost blownout sky, and a rather lurid sunset, the three have proven quite popular. Probably, it helped that I used a 180mm macro lens for the tree and sunset while others were most probably using around 24mm or equivalent. I had to walk quite a way from the group to frame the tree.
Yep, shoot what inspires and excites YOU Mika. Interestingly may fav photos are usually the least popular of those I post. Take a look at the link below... MIKE

spot on as usual mike i love cloudy days
I like the phrase “let’s find some picture”🙂
Thanks... MIKE 🙂🙏
As always very interesting. The best on RUclips
"Never be afraid to make a mistake" ... best advice error. I always enjoy experimenting :-)
true indeed -Melissa pp Mike
Best teacher ever!
Thanks again 🐍
Love this sort of video. When you have limited time this is often the sort of weather you wake up to or find yourself out in.
Useful tips, some motivational speech combined with a touch of humour. Thanks for the video. Much appreciated...
It's really nice to see a channel not banging on about the latest way to expensive camera, more on photography & inspiration. wins the day for me.
I appreciate that!
Mike - this is the video that got me to subscribe. Always nice to discover a photographer who shares their experience without letting ego get in the way. Thank you & keep on myth-busting!
thank you Mykat Caltex95, please do share them too to other photographers like so we can make more - Melissa pp Mike
Best advice- going out by yourself- that’s when I get the best shots and take as much time as I want. Sometimes strangers approach for conversation- so you get to meet people as well.
So true!
Great for living in the UK.
😆
Mike you are always motivational and inspirational as far as I am concerned... I love getting ideas from you... Thanks...
thank you Anthony -Melissa pp Mike
Hi Mike, as ever great information and great shots, thanks for sharing.
All the best..............Peter.
Loved this, Mike. I'm learning photography for the first time, and I find videos like this one super useful. Cheers.

Thanks so much for the inspiration! You rock it!
Mike, I enjoy all of your videos, but this one was a true gem for me. So often when I have the time to go outdoors with my cameras for some lens time, if the skies are grey, I end up talking myself out of going due to the "drab" color options. Thanks for waking me up to the opportunities and beauty that grey skies can offer. Thanks for the lessons!
2 years ago this video got me motivated to go out in the crappy weather. thank you.!
I think we all better watch this again now then!!
I'm about 3 mins into the video and I am getting ready to go out in tomorrow's crappy weather. 😁
Craftsmanship and charm. Beautiful.
Thanks John ... MIKE 🙂🙏
Thank you for this video. I needed the kick in the arse to get moving in this monsoon.
I would like to add that the photos of the far shore feel really nice, ethereal. Like impressionist paintings.
Thank you Akshay... MIKE
Another great video Mike you get the problems sorted in a very easy to understand way .
More important than teaching plain technique, you inspire us to be creative. Thanks.
I love the way you make us think about taking a shot
I have to say, Mr. Mike, that the way you provide an inset video in the main screen is a good way to let beginners see through you lens' eye.
Love your spirit too in carrying out your videos.
Thank you. Glad it was helpful!... MIKE 🙏
Wow! That was a really great tutorial. I'll be honest that I ended up here to figure out what kind of settings you were using on a cloudy day. I really appreciate that you gave people like me a tiny slap on the wrist! and instead encourage more practice, because you're right, I know what what the settings do...now it's a matter of applying the knowledge gained. I will definitely be back for more photography lessons from your website. Thanks again! Out to go grab some shots on a classic coastal cloudy weather day!
Thanks Crystal. Come and join us in a facebook group I set up a few weeks back for free weekly challenges, feedback, competitions and one of the friendliest most supportive groups of people you could wish for. Link below if you's like to find out more... MIKE

As always Mike, Inspirational. Showing great pictures can be taken no matter what the weather conditions!
"Bullshit" and "Arse" in the same video?? 😂😂 love it.
He is really saucy today! lol
Nearly spat my coffee out!
Ha ha ha ha - you better believe it Dave.. MIKE :-)
After 2 minutes watching I love this channel.
Have you found our Photography Locked Down Group on Facebook too? facebook.com/groups/photolockdown/
I take lots of waterfalls in woodlands. Bright contrasting sun is often a problem so I usually prefer cloudy days for those types of shots. For me, perfect waterfall shots often result from what I call bright overcast. There is no bright sun contrast but the overcast clouds are bright enough to create faint shadows. As you said, sometimes, it is all about using the conditions and matching a shot to them.
so true indeed, we can just play with our settings, our eyes, our feet and see what happens - Melissa pp Mike
Wow Mike stunning imagery....that dock and the tall grasses and reeds...a dream...I find my portrait work is incredible with a cloudy grey day...quite surprised me the first time it happened and there was no turning back and rescheduling with hurricane weather in the forecast...had to make the best of what I had ....thanks so much for sharing so willingly and generously...always look forward to your videos...stay blessed ...
Thank you isabella. You too... MIKE
Loved the 16:44 with the birds on the wing - brilliant composition - cloudy skies, still lake - what a way to spend a day:)
Thanks, Mike. Another great one. Loved the variety of shots you got and showed at end! Nice job!
Great vlog!...I've watched several of your videos before and have now subscribed...I like your down to earth and natural delivery, and pure enthusiasm for photography, which I find both infectious and inspirational...It just goes to show how great shots can be captured in all weather and lighting conditions...a lot of people, especially those new to photography, would immediately dismiss an overcast day as a no-goer on the photography front, but I think you have demonstrated very nicely just how worthwhile it can be..great shots by the way!
Thank yu @ Inner City Unit. Please help me make more like it by sharing my vids around wherever appropriate... MIKE :-)
Excellent video as always, Mike. The shots you took are great as well, particularly at 17:13 and 17:32.
Nothing better than a walk on a grey day and this vid just proves it. Most would have said nah too dreary but your shots at the end just proves what can be achieved. Great inspirational vid again.
Thank you Tony 😎
Best Photography Chanel in the RUclips.... Amazing content in all the videos...Keep it up good works Mike. You are a legend....
Hi Mike, we watched your video in the morning, while having breakfast. Thank you so much for your lovely video and motivation. 🌞🌻🤗🤗🤗
thank you for watching the vids! - Melissa pp Mike
Great, simple, inspirational little video.
Wow, Mike! Saved the best for the still images at the end. Loved the boats in the water, the dock with reeds on both sjdes taking the eye out to the lake. Nice cloud reflections upon the water. Colors "pop" nicely from the gray skies.
Thanks Bruce. "Saved the best till the end..." Yes that's the hard part about filming these. The best opportunities usually happen when the video camera isn't rolling. By the time it is, it's too late. Like the ripples made by a passing boat. ... MIKE
Saw you working one evening Mike, by the cinema in the town with the gardens down the middle. Didn't say hello, you were a bit busy!.........Great video, even better advice. I do like these. Thanks.
Hi John. Which town was that? You're always welcome to come say hi... MIKE :-)
@@MikeBrowne Near the Pavilion Bournemouth Mike. I'll remember to say hi next time. All the best!
A great little video Mike. That's how I Like to do my photography on my own with my own thoughts. Thanks for the good tips and sharing your know how about the best range of F No's to use.
Good to hear John.
This is the guy that got me into professional photography.
thank you for the kind words The faustian - Melissa pp Mike
I like the way you explain things, keep it going Mike.
Absolutely TIMELY! I'm catching up! I've been watching a few Mike Browne videos a day and they are all fantastic. I started from the beginning and have just made my way through a little bit at a time. It JUST so happens, I set this one up and lo and behold, a DREARY day! I can't wait to get out now and shoot my shot! Thank you Mike!
You're welcom Frank. ... MIKE🙏😊
Mike, your teaching style is easy to understand and inspirational! Keep it up
I really appreciate how you share your thinking-and-shooting process!
Another very interesting video, now that the summer is coming to an end you make it well worth while taking a camera out on a dull over cast day. thanks Mike.
thank you terence - glad you found it useful - Melissa pp Mike
Great video, love the boats picture and thanks for the inspiration.
Great lesson! Challenging yourself in less than inspirational settings is exactly how you break the mold!
Thanks for the histogram note Mike, I'm always glad when someone emphasizes that. The right histogram always depends on what you're photographing. E.g: You can't photograph a bright white wedding dress and believe that it has to be exposed to be in the middle. It will all be grey instead of white! - Great vid as usual!!
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent. Thank you Mike!
Thank you Mike, these videos are really inspiring.
Thank you for posting.... You talked about inspiration to take pics.... I was hooked thru this whole vid, but it was towards the end when you said " get off your ass, smell the lake smell the air" at that point I became your biggest fan.Thank you again, I learned so much in this tutorial.
😊🙏 Thank you Shawn. Delighted to have helped... MIKE
He made me smell my own ass and hop in the shower.
I love the smell of the light in the morning.
What a fantastic saying Johnny... MIKE :-)
@@MikeBrowneIt's your videos that inspire me to get out there and shoot. I hope to attend your workshops one day. Thank you.
Another great video and great photos Mike. Very inspiring! 😎
Thanks Mike for the mellow video. The pictures are the epitome of restfulness.
Thank you for your honesty and I have looked at a shot and just like you walked away as it looked good in my eye but when I looked through the lens the shot was lost. So I never took it. But this is an area I have struggles with , hence to the reason why I am here for as I need to learn this more in these conditions as here in Australia we are heading towards Winter so this will come in handy.
Good to hear Ralph, have you looked at any of my sample courses for the winter months? www.photographycourses.biz/courses
Hello Mike. Very good and helpful information. Thank you for your time for posting wonderful videos all the time. 🤓
I use manual focus with back-button override, to get red edge highlights in the viewfinder. If auto doesn’t lock on, just twist the lens.
Hello Mike, love your video, excellent, beautiful pictures, thank you very much, I have learn a lot from your video.👍
Excellent technical information ,thanks a lot
Thanks Mike. Good video. You cover almost all setting except metering. Please let me know which meter setting is the right one for this type of weather. Spot, centre weight or matrix.
Thanks Aviation Enthusiastic. There isn't a right metering mode because everyone has their own preferred method. Personally I use matrix 99.9% of the time and maybe spot when I know I want to peg middle grey on a specific place the remaining 0.01%... MIKE
Mike Browne thank you
Any exposure is possible in any metering mode. I use spot 99% of the time because i find a small area & tell the camera what tonal value i want it to be for the exposure i have in mind ( in manual or semi auto ) so i just depends on the way you think.
Ooh...loved the shot of the boats at 17:06.
The best days! I went out yesterday where I am and it was very overcast. Made for some real moody shots! On another note isn't the Xt2 great, even for landscapes..
You are awesome! You’re one of my favorite RUclips photographers/instructors to watch. Thank you for all you do to help us aspirant photographers!
thank you ashley for the kind words, please do share too so we can make more - Melissa pp Mike
Great video as always, certainly gave me something to think about.
Nice photos and great tips! Thank you for sharing Mike!
Hi Mike, thank you for your clear slow talking make's everything much better to follow & understand, love your low shots, ! unfortunately at 75 years of age, it's almost impossible to get that low, & even more painful to get back up, so suggestions to fined a around this.?
Have you checked out if you have a Flippy back screen. If it tilt up it is easy to get the view down to "hip perspective". (you may want to get the horizon right in the computer).
Secondly, a small and really light tripod is even better. Frame by eye for exposure (with the tripod attached) (try to get the composition as close as possible to how you think the low angle perspective looks and lock the exposure (and focus) and bracket the shot after putting the "rig" down (almost like the vloggers that run around videoing themself with a camera on top of a small tripod or stick).
Finally, never underestimate the power of sitting down on a bench.
Wish for a small rucksacks that has a fold out chair as the frame for Xmas. One does not need to be 50 years to find patience while trying to compose while sitting instead of squatting. It even helps a lot if one does not pull a tripod around. Sitting makes our body more stable.
With a flippy screen one can even place the camera on the knees for extra support in low light (even better with a "pea bag")
As geologist i sat for days in trenches. Documenting stratigraphy. It did not take many weeks before discoving that to sit makes for way better concentration than squatting. concentration equals quality.
Finally, I know Canon (at least) has a "vertical" viewfinder that attach to the hotshoe (?) and does the same job as a flippy screen. But I have a feeling they are expensive.
These days, if you have a camera with "video out", it is probably cheaper to get a small monitor that can attach to the flash shoe and flip around in all directions.
Personally I like the low tech variant (the backpack with chair). And remember, over the last 30 years, the tradition of using hiking poles like alpine climbers always has is a becoming a thing also outside the alps.
I use them, especially with a 20 kg bergans on my back.
And the coolest thing is that some of these telescopic poles have camera bracket on top. So they work as a monopod for the camera. Exactly what can save a picture when the blue hour truly is fading.
Best.
that live view finder is great for people who are looking to expand on their photography skillset, myself included. being a beginner, I struggle to frame up shots and watching you frame them up, it helps.
Have you heard about my Masterclass in Photography course? That could help you a lot www.photographycourses.biz/masterclass
@@MikeBrowne i will have a look :)
Thanks Mike for the inspiration, you have a good eye for photo ops
Educational/ thought provoking. Some shots began to resemble water colour paintings from late 1800’s.😊
Thanks Stephen.. MB
Great video and tips. I always get people on my workshops thinking that if it's cloudy or raining there isn't a photograph to be had, but that is simply not true. If it's grey, then I look for colour in the grey such as people with colourful umbrellas or colourful leaves in autumn. Even on overcast days there are often subtle changes in light.
Hi and thank Ian. Yes completely agree. I posted an interview with photojournalist Essdras Suarez last night in which he said in his line of work he has to come up with a great shot without the luxury of time, the best light or weather. ... MIKE
@@MikeBrowne I'll check that out. Thanks. Agree, I see it as a challenge.... I believe you can always get a good shot, you just need to work at it.

Just love your positivity. It IS okay to fail but experimenting is one way to learn when confronted with a new situation.
Practice practice practice, that is the key.
The only failure is not learning from when something doesn't work by trying it again - but differently... MIKE
