During a rare and spectacular fog event, some of the gnarliest trees I know get completely engulfed in a pea-souper.
Thanks to a tip-off from Grumpton and Brian, I rush to capture the magic before the fog lifts, and boy, do I hit the motherload!
Woodland photography is never easy, but using this one particular compositional technique, I manage to photograph a scene straight out of a fairy tale.
Shallow depth of field is one of my most beloved tools when it comes to woodland photography and at f/1.8, it's almost too easy.
Hiking up a steep hill with a gut full of chicken bhuna is never a good idea. What I need is a sponsorship deal from Gaviscon just to get me up the hill. Gerrin touch...
How many times can I use the superlative ''ornate'' and what happens when Amanda jumps out of a tree? Brian might be kind enough to give me an Aero but will he ever get his 35mm lens back from me?
This landscape photography vlog is one you do not want to miss.
Hit play, then like.

Do you know if the local council or forestry dept ever go into these forests and plant new trees to replace the dying ones? Thanks
My daughter rolled her eyes, let out an “…ugh” when you said, “Lichen… subscribe.” The second time she busted out laughing. I think she is ashamed that she has the same sense of humor! 😜
I think I measured 7 repetitions of ornate... but my incredibly annoying neighbour fell off his roof extension and the laughter reverberating through every pore of me temporarily killed my attention. Please don't ask me whether he was ok... Someone screamed so I think it was all in hand.
Amusement aside, GH has got to be one of the most natural RUclipsrs out there. Not only is the education aspect of his content generally superior to other photography channels (Fro, Northrops, Kai W, Manny Ortiz and numerous others)... his natural and engaging humour elevates the experience. So much more professional, even when he isn't trying.
Grumpton is always a great addition as well... even if it's just a mention.
Gavin you cease to amaze me, how your able to distinguish a Garry Oak from say a Bob, Henry or Steve is beyond me🤗
I really like this image. For some reason the post process work seems a little different than the way you used to do your trees and forests in the fog in the past. I think it looks more real and there's no strong distinctions in the photos stacking or the blendings. Also I like that you left a little more shadows and strong distinct contrast lines in the foreground tree rather than raising the shadows too high. I think it's a mistake that a lot of people make they're afraid to leave shadows in the imagery. I think it looks more real and appearance intends to give it more of a moody look. Great job!
We went to Shoot Hackfall woods and I got some awsome shots in fog, it makes for a magical experience! It minded me of how ornate everything was!
I learn English watching your videos, Gavin. Thanks for the word 'ornate'. The number of times you mentioned it helped it sink deep into my memory. This word will live with me forever now along with ''magnefiqwah' and 'refleksion'. I hope this is the right spelling 😁
Perfect spelling. 10 out of 10.
Love that 55mm shot of the old tree.
Amanda is thinking of the shot you should be taking… give her a camera, love to see her perspective on your shared locations 😊
I love the mist filter you’re using… 😝
Another great watch with fantastic images. 😃
Great video of a fabulous woodland the fog really does bring out the character of old trees they tell a story the way they seem to interact with each other giving a chance to get some great images and just being able to enjoy the experience with your lovely lady Amanda as always great video class photography thanks Gavin
Lucky 13 mate :-)
The shot at 9:00 was processed so ornately
What a stunning spot to explore despite being aero’d !!
She’s great, man. You definitely picked a winner there.
Every time I see any lichen now, all I will be able to think about is "like and subscribe". Thank you for these vlogs and helping people smile.
That tree sure is a sculpture! Its another Sunday fun time with you two again!
Really love the pano shot - great! Enjoying your channel.
A great video...I had never thought about focusing on one tree and have the background blurred out...genius! You two really make watching these videos fun...really a great team! The reaction on Amanda's face when you were sniffing/licking the Aero paper was simply priceless!
Oooh I liked this a lot! Big old twisted oaks and fog! And you did not disappoint! Last shot was my fav. Thanks G Master Hardcastle 😍🙏
Love the first tree shot with the 55mm lens Gavin.
Finally first !!!!!!!! Love the channel...
Fantastic compositions. Beautiful with the music. 💪
I really enjoyed the video. Nice walk through and composition thoughts with a bit of comedy skittered in. Really enjoyed it, thank you.

That was a lot of fun, thanks. I like the haunting pics.
Orn8. The images look they are shot in 3D. Fantastic images and great to watch.👍🙂
Great one. Love the fogg. Here in the Netherlands it’s always when the sun comes out it’s gone in10 minutes. Foggy mornings are my favourite shots.
Hey Gavin...
GREAT video!! I really liked it! 😎
I counted 6 ornates from the time you mentioned it, until the end of the video!
What a perfect setting/video for a lazy daylight savings Sunday. We had some cool fog/frost recently in Calgary that I took advantage of for some car photography. Definitely wish we got more fog here. Great Video Gavin!
really enjoyed that Gavin, liked your distance footage and great quality.....
Lovely scenery👍👍
What a beautiful tree in a magnificant forest! And great shots, as always! Greetz from Austria

Gnarly, a word not used enough i feel, and an epic shot Gavin!!
Hey Gavin, I got my Shimoda action x50! and i'm freaking lovin it ! Thanks for the -10% ;) Again as allways your videos are a joy to watch :D
Thank you for the lesson on composition. I will put it to use!
Loved the video and the images. I almost thought you were going to break out into some House of Pain then for a minute. Great stuff.
7 including your initial mention of "ornate". Images were amazing, class as always Gavin!
I think I am gonna have to stop watching your videos 😳 it’s not what You think!!! I am freaken joules!!! You’re a legend!! It’s amazing to watch you at work
Líquen/ like 😁👌!!! That 55 1.8... absolutely stunning!!! And Amanda ate the Aero 😁😁
Enjoyed this one Gavin, some cracking images thanks for sharing, I counted 13 times. Thanks for sharing
That lichen gag is an "old man's beard"!
I counted 8. But I was completely distracted by you wearing Amanda’s blue top. Whilst there is nothing wrong with your magnifique physique, I couldn’t quite focus on the shots, or even what you were talking about because your moobs were burning my retinas out. For that reason, I probably need to win one of your creations! I don’t mean partially digesting Indian either!
You said it 14 times. 😁 Keep up the great content. Love it. My girlfriend and I enjoy watching for obvious reasons. Great photographer but how you two are is amazing and we love seeing it. God bless and keep doing well.
Almost ;)
Digging the 55mm wide open shots. I use my 50 mm prime wide open often. They really do just pull you in with gorgeous shots. Just fantastic man!
Oh, and yes, I love how your compositions “pull me off”. So to speak…
I knew it!
I think your second shot of the Garry Oak was awesome, that 55mm f1.8 was a great choice ! probably one of the best woodland shots you have done, I bet grumpy was, well grumpy when he saw that one !!
Thank you Gavin. Couldn’t remember how many times as at my age remembering my name is difficult. Enjoyed. Stay safe.🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷
Lucky 13 :) Great images, thanks for the episode! :)
Stunning images buddy, nice to see someone shooting wide open as well
I ALWAYS watch to the end. Ornate x 6. Love the muted colours. 👍🦘
You’re the king of composition, Gavin. My lovely pano mono shot arrived in the mail on Friday. It’s magnifique!
wOOHOO Glad you enjoyed it Peter :)
You should of seen what was in the other pocket ✌️ Cheers for thee lift you two, all for the price on an aero 😉, that 35mm GM took a cracking shot 😁
I might have to buy one...
@@fototripper Plenty of bang for your buck👍
@14:30 is my fav shot. Great stuff Gavin!
The tree at 9:20 is so beautifully captured! 😍
It’s so hard to keep up with the 13 or so times you said ornate when your work is so inspiring!! ❤️❤️🤪
Bingo ;)
2nd shot is extraordinary.
Thanks for the Video, Gavin. I so appreciate your humor. 13 "ornates" by my count: 6 before the challenge, the challenge intro and 6 after. Nicely done!
Bingo!
Gnarly, dude.
Just discovered your channel. Love it !!!!
Ode to Thomas Heaton? 🤣 Wonderful content! I like the tone color that you applied to the images. Thanks for sharing, Gavin.
Nice work brutha!!!
Love that second image - the one taken with the 50mm. Hope to see you shoot more with it.
Loved this video Gavin. Something different from you but the filming is spot on . .really immerses you in the experience. Well done mate.
Lovely images. Glad you got the fog. I suppose fog is hard to predict in some areas. It sure seems to help separate out the subjects. Thanks for sharing!!!
I do enjoy your videos and this one did not disappoint ! It deserved more than a 5 ornate rating! Btw, please thank Amanda for the Unicorn tucked away in the book, it was a nice addition.
Yes I reckon people enjoy the sticker as much as the book ;)
man im jealous. you got such amazing forrests in your area. awesome stuff. this was the first video i have watched related to photography in quite some time. good to see your still up to your old shinanigans. to be honest i was surprised there wasnt a plug to your book in this one.
I have been slacking in that department due to low stocks.
@@fototripper i have to admit i did enjoy the shameless plugs for the book. you definately went above and beyond to advertise them. i wonder how many you had grumpton destroy to promote them.
@@fototripper oh no! i just found out F4 is no longer a thing. to be honest makeing me a bit emotional. i could never afford the course at the time but it was on my bucket list to get it one day when my situation improved. and i guess i just assumed it would always be around. i guess some things just werent meant to be. i still love each one of you guys different styles and will continue to watch all 4. each one of you is an inspiration. this is what i get for not watching photography videos for 6 months. i wish each one of you the best of success and i hope you all keep doing what you love. that video btw was hillarious with the filters and stuff. couldnt get over adams teeth. as homage to f4 i will dedicate one day a week to each one of you and turn off my add blocker and hit play all while im at work so you get a full 8 hours of solid ad revinue. starting with you gavin.
Nice video.
16:43 that was the shot I'd have grabbed.
Well done for including humour..
Too many photography channels take themselves a little too seriously.
There was only one use of one word.. "Buggerlugs".
My mum used to call my wife's brother that..
Never heard it used by anyone else..
Made me smile...
Subscribed... 👍
I really liked the photo with the liken.... subscribe.......never gets old! 😅
My friend Nate had a good video on gnarly trees. It’s a good one. Not sure which is better - this ornate’s.
I counted 7 ish ornatish times
Great images m8 and yes the old oaks are class 👌 👏
Was a really good video I counted 13 times the word ornate was said & I love the fog around the trees 🙂
Bingo!
I agree, I grew up with a 55/1.8 on my 35mm Mamiya, it's a great focal length!
PS: I counted 6 ornates
Woohoo tips I can actually use! We have trees and fog!
Think you used the word ornate 13 times. Brilliant video as always mate. Just love your photography.
I bough 4 Easter eggs this week and hid them in the garage. Nice and cold in there and out of sight, or so I thought. I found a Twirl egg box and a large Galaxy egg box in the recycling. When confronting the wife little did I realise it was my fault for buying them in the first place so she told me. "If I know it's there I'll eat it", she said. Fair play, I thought. I never ever tell her when I'm buying camera gear. That is is an unwritten rule in photography circles. First rule of photography, What the wife doesn't know can't hurt you.
Stunning images buddy
I got 13 times you used the word ornate!! You sure got some awesome fog!!
I was in the UK New Forest today taking shots. This very much looks like the NF, lots of old twisted oaks and lots of moss.
some great photo's you made
You finally ventured into Adam's Forest. He's really fond of that gnarly oak. What a terrific shoot. That image at 14:40 is just...how is it that you, Brits, say?... spectacular!
I think you mean my forest ;)
WOW. i watch all your videos, it is fantastic and very helpful. u said on it 8 times
Then I reckon you should watch again just for accuracy...
Because of your videos, I asked my niece living in London to bring me a Twirl bar for Christmas. I hadn't ever seen one in the US. Very tasty!
My work here is done.
Absolutely love all the images from this video. Just stunning. The editing is wonderfully moody and gloomy.
Um... 8 ornates?
Enjoyed the video and your explanation regarding the composition of each image. While photographing in the fog do you expose to the right? Thanks
Ha!! I like the whole lichen subscribe bit. It kills me every time🤣
Double Decker bars.
Fruittella.
Twirl Bars.
Lion bars.
Sherbert Fountain.
Crispello bars.
Jaffa Bars.
Jelly Babies.
Fruit Pastilles.
All good ----- but wait you cant get them in Canada ;) But you do have some lovely trees and fog and captured some top class images .
ok, for starters I believe you said onit 5 times. I just happened across your channel, and I have enjoyed your videos. Keep up the good work
Excellentay .
Really like how you cropped the oak tree that's touching the ground (you said it may have supported itself at one point). So you get the width, but lose the empty foreground.
You are the fun-guide of landscape photography! I am lichen this video, it's so, what's the word? Valuable morels. ;-) Aero, get in touch...
9.20 magic . I got 5 times? Thumbs up 👍👍
