    Thanks a lot. Could you explain about "Drive Broken (code: f3 50)" in LTO7 HPE Library? Thanks.

    • @repairmytapedrive
      @repairmytapedrive  4 года назад

      Typically 'Drive Broken' results when you get an error code 5 show up on the LED display on the front of the drive. Error code 5 is also typical of having to do with the PCB board. We offer a no-cost repair evaluation and would take a look at it for you and let you know what the problem is and how much to repair. You can fill out an RMA form at our website mwtss.com We have ways to 'clear' that error code and then see if we can replicate it. It may just need to be cleared. You can also call us @ 952-736-0200 if you would like to discuss your options or speak to our technician.

    In another YT video, I saw someone connect a SATA host bus adapter to an LTO drive with only SAS interface. Would you comment on how to figure out on which drives this might be possible?

    • @repairmytapedrive
      @repairmytapedrive  3 года назад +1

      Hi Brad: That process is very not standard, I am not saying that it cannot be done but not recommended.
      Who knows if the device show in the DM with out errors then give it a try. We never run tape drove that is a SAS drive needing a dedicated HBA via the SATA port.
      Remember a LTO drive wants to stream data so it will slow down the transfer rate of the drive to match the data coming from your server. The LTO drive can throttle back about 12 steps to accommodate the buss speed the server can present. Not sure if SATA can do that.
      Hope this helps
      Dan

      @@repairmytapedrive Thanks Dan. I found out later that I misunderstood what the person in the video said. He had actually used a SAS HBA. Thanks.

    A very helpful video. One nitpick: I'm guessing you meant "RFID" not "RDIF" chip?

    • @repairmytapedrive
      @repairmytapedrive  3 года назад +1

      Thank You Brad demonstrates you were listening. Great compliment After we do these videos the entire staff will look at them on the big screen. We all get some great laughs about the mistakes we make. I do get the terms confused those RDIF and RFID my confusions are rooted in the aeronautics and amateur radio genes that I also have.
      Technically as IBM refers to the chip as a CM chip, I am not certain if in that video I did show the tape drive transmitter and the CM chip(receiver) enclosed in the media.
      From IBM
      Cartridge memory chip (LTO-CM)
      All generations of the IBM® LTO Ultrium data cartridges include a Linear Tape-Open Cartridge Memory (LTO-CM) chip.
      This chip ( 1 in Figure 1) contains information about the cartridge and the tape (such as the name of the manufacturer that created the tape), and statistical information about the cartridge's use. The LTO-CM enhances the efficiency of the cartridge. For example, the LTO-CM stores the end-of-data location which, when the next time this cartridge is inserted and the Write command is issued, enables the drive to quickly locate the recording area and begin recording. The LTO-CM also aids in determining the reliability of the cartridge by storing data about its age, how many times it was loaded, and how many errors it accumulated. Whenever a tape cartridge is unloaded. The tape drive writes any pertinent information to the cartridge memory.
      The storage capacity of the LTO Generations 6, 7, and 8 is 16320 bytes. For Generations 5 and 4, the LTO-CM is 8160 bytes. LTO Generations 3, 2, and 1 have an LTO-CM capacity of 4096 bytes.
      ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
      On one of our recent videos I talked about the spacing from the media to the head transducers and claimed they were 2 microns not .02 microns which they are. As you can tell from our lack of finesse in these productions we are not scientists talking about tape drive repair just folks who test, repair and sell over 3000 of these devices on a yearly basis. We all have engineering backgrounds some with degrees and others with a whole host of experience. Some things we have in common is great deductive, inductive analytical skills to share with one another. We are a very seasoned staff with no addenda's we do get along well. We all appreciate any objections we receive.
      I do interact on a daily basis with customers who think I am very smart which in the LTO field I am. Most of these folks are experts in their fields some astrophysicist, rocket and launch coordinator folks, some strategic weapons military folks, very high end video production folks. All are experts in there respective areas. What a fun activity for me, can not call it work. We have been in business for over 35 years

    I need your suggestion on malfunctioning IBM LTO7 -H drive.
    LTO7 DATA tapes becoming BAD TAPE while cleaning cartridge working fine with same drive.Also few LTO7 tape tagged as cleaning cartridge in backup software.
    Please share your suggestion to rectify issue.

      Aakash: Sounds like you have a back up software issue more than a hardware issue. Not knowing your back up software you may want to check on the blogs regarding the manufactures software to resolve this issue.
      General comments regarding your issue are as follows.
      Data media being placed in a dedicate cleaning slot.
      Unfinished or failed back up request- clear all pending back ups.
      De install your back up software, remove tape drives via device manager. - Shut down server also remove auto start for software upon a re boot if enabled.
      Power on you library and allow to finish the POST.
      Re power on the server - make sure server finds new hardware and installs the proper drivers. Check the device manager activity.
      Now re activate your back up software. The software should find the new hardware, library and drives and install the proper drivers.
      Some back up software may require formatting the media that was flagged as bad. Again check with the back up software manufacture on the suggested remedy for the marking of tapes as bad.
      Please note we are NOT software experts so these generic instructions may not work. We are a very technically advanced hardware experts. Annually, we purchase, repair and sell over 3000 LTO drives per year in all configurations.

    No, Thank You. Clearly they need isolation from the outside world, and a way to blow air out, dust filters and a way to easily clean the head with the cleaning cartridge and the small brush, really bad build, it's simple but prone for contamination, good for the manufacturers 'coz they'll sale more tapes
