  • Recorded this shortly after finishing the hellacious job of installing Doug Thorley headers in my 2006 Landcruiser. I couldn't follow the directions as written and make it work, so here's what I had to do.

On a scale from 1-10 this is a 30 pack of light beer job.
I removed the steering shaft and jacked the engine up after spending hours fighting it.

Thanks for this. I have heard this is a bear of a job. You and everyone else has confirmed. Nice tips and good advice about the motor mounts, heat shield, and checking the threads!

I was surprised at how much this sucked even with all the warnings! Thanks for watching

i was one of the first install these headers on my GX in 2018 deff did the job because of the tick we did the motor mount route was quoted 1800 from most shops non VVTI motor i wasnt gunna spend 1800 took me 2 friggin days and to top it the hell off i got the y pipe and the long tubes no cats the flange was welded wrong factory error had to have an exhaust shop re weld the flange to line up properly it was hell but the power was worth it and it off set the power loss on the 35s

Man, that's a special kind of hell. The extra power is definitely nice!

Can reaffirm that I used FelPro OEM style gaskets when installing mine on my 07 4Runner and I should have went with the DT style gaskets, since no matter how hard I tried to tighten everything down, I still have a ton of ticking going on. Literally impossible to get a good torque reading or anything. Cant even fit a fcking flex wrench in some spots!

Excellent tips and you have helped me decide to just stick with OEM headers....this sounds miserable.

It’s worth it but you’ll never want to do it again when you’re done.

Great tips! I watched your install video. Any info on Hp, Torque, MPG, or sound?

I’m seeing basically the same MPG (bad).
No sound improvement, but I didn’t put on a full exhaust. If you want better sound these will do it but need to rework what comes after them.
Probably about 20hp based on butt dyno. You’ll definitely feel more power in a non-VVTi engine where 20hp is a bigger increase. A little underwhelming but I did have a cracked header. Wish you could see them from the top like you can with a Chevy!

So, isn’t that toyota gasket you’re holding up also including the heat shield? I used new Toyota gaskets on mine and they look like the other ones you held up.

Yes the Toyota gasket includes the heat shield.
I had to trim mine to fit the thorley’s

Would you recimmt just paying for the installation?

If you have the money and someone you trust to do it right when things go completely perfectly then absolutely

@@snaph I paid for someone to install it with remflex gasket but they are leaking. Any tips, should I go with the metal gaskets ? Personally I think they messed up on the installation but I did buy my thorleys used so their is a possibility that they are warped.... However it's odd that the remflex gasket didn't work

@@JonFox1945 oof. Yeah I’m not sure what to tell you. Why do you say leaking?
