I have repaired my evap canister on my old 2000 Hyundai accent by cutting it open just as you did and yes that flimsy filter was torn , I went to wall Mart and bought a thin piece of very thin cloth like fabric and a piece of window screen and cut it to size and crazy glued around the edges then added the screen to each side , I refilled my canister with activated charcoal ( you can buy in the pet department) then plastic welded it back together with a little epoxy resin to help .. This fix worked perfectly !
Wow, I cannot believe that that plastic box with springs, tubes, a bunch of charcoal beads etc. costs over $200! It almost seems like they could have designed a refillable one...
Helpfull video! I had done my evap canister in the same way, removed the charcoal and cleaned the inside filters with brake cleaner and then refilled with the old charcoal (only 160.000 kms old), soldered back with hot gun (PPR plumbing type). Finally removed the 0420 Catalyst system efficiency below threshold code and NOT reappeared again. Period 😂

I'm like a little kid with big sparking eyes looking down the internet tube in amazement. 🥲Thank you for all your work and for sharing what you care about and enjoy with us..
I had a 06 Tahoe come in for a p0446 vent performance and it wouldnt take gas easily so I checked the vent valve and it was clogged with dirt, I replaced it and sent the vehicle back out. It came back the next day with same concern I ended up pulling the tank down and found all of the evap lines full of those charcoal pellets from the canister that was a first for me never seen one break down like that but it sure was a lesson for me especially with having to drop the tank, clean the lines and replace the canister for free it’s definitely something I will check from now on
Tried this out today, I had an on going Stoopid P0441 on my '96 Lexus ES300 ( Camry 3.0L), maybe 4+ years, always passed the bloody Kommunist Kalifornia mandated smog check, barely. I have done this for my '85 Porsche 911, Swapping the foam membrane with Cotton Swab Pad from CVS. Great thing is their 4"x4" pads are actually 8'x16" sheets folded in half twice and half, perfect for the 5.25"x6.0" base of the Lexus ES300 canister. I used my SawSaw to cut the bottom off cleanly, surprised how well it worked. As you found, the foam membrane was soaked and certain areas dense due to fuel/deterioration. I also used a hole punch to make holes in the original membrane to use it's sturdy structure to support the flimsy cotton swab. JB welded. No leaks :-) I will report if this allows proper flow for the EVAP system. Thanks you Master Brian for the inspiration!
Loved your video! Just when I am about to cry, you made me laugh with your humor. I have an evap system issue. My 2007 toyota rav4 will be going in for diagnostics next week. hopefully it's only the leak detection pump that needs to be replaced due rusty water in the canister and not a replacement of the charcoal filter or I am looking at about $1500 in repairs. Old age pension doesn't go far these days. Thanks for this video.
@Old man Goat Depending on the mileage and condition of it, if it's "only" a 2007, and that's the only major problem for it, it should still last a while longer with decent maintenance. My only question is if the EVAP canister is necessary if emissions are no longer being tested, and if it impacts any other aspects of the vehicle, other than emissions.
Of course the Toyota ones are built better. Their cars are also built 10 times better than Kia. I recently had the purge solenoid go bad of my charcoal canister. Luckily there was an after market part I could get for like $80 instead of paying almost $500 for a whole new canister.
Dude! This is the best! I've wondered what the inside of these looks like, not at all what I imagined. I thought it would look like a glasspack muffler with larger chunks of charcoal held back with perforated walls. Didn't imagine it would just be filled with fine granules like that. How’s it going? I normally don’t subscribe to these videos but your the only one to actually take a couple apart to see how they work and why they fail. I just got a 2003 Hyundai Sonata and the people I got it from said they were having difficulty filling the gas tank. I had a good idea what the problem was and figured I could fix it myself without having to do too much. It’s strange, I have had fish tanks much of my life and used many different filters. These air filters are really similar to a canister filter for a fish tank. The charcoal is exactly the same, only on a car it’s filtering air and vapor. Unreal how simple these things are yet cause lots of problems. It seems they could easily come up with a much better design as shown from Hyundai to Toyota. Both could do slot better. Great videos man! Just to throw in some usefulness, I have Actually had success reusing the charcoal canisters (on GM trucks and SUV') by removing it and blowing compressed air in the fuel side you will see all the dirt and debris come out the other. Tap it on the floor a few times and repeat. As you said it saves about $150. Granted my symptoms were a Tahoe that took forever to fuel up and was not throwing codes. Now that we have seen the inside, My guess is its probably just blowing that foam out lol. Either way it's been over a year and the fuel issues have not returned. Keep up with the videos man! I'd be worried to blow any compression through that, would just shred that old brittle foam and sure, it probably works after that, because it's letting all those carbon pellets fill things it shouldn't (airflow). I rather cut it open and redo the activated charcoal and filter kit from like rockauto/Amazon and black silicone it shut or some crap with a clamp. Good stuff, thanks, I'll do that kit I see and measure the charcoal
@@Hedgehodge- Two years later and I am just now doing this research, so thank-you for the good ideas! I looked and do not see a charcoal and filter kit on amazon/rockauto, Did you ever get this fixed?
@@blackrockbrewing5141 I bought the stuff but winter happened and father's vehicle went to the graveyard. Gave him the car in another state, then the light vanished . Weird lol. Sorry
I believe most of the time, the canister somehow gets a vacuum leak either from the canister itself somewhere or hoses. Also could be the solenoid that opens and closes the valve that's gone bad. Ideal to test and use soap/water mix to identify any leaks in the EVAP system.
Like your approach Have 2014 FJ Cruiser Noticed today hours after Veh.bieng shut of heard humming noise under rear bump seems to b comming from charcoal canister started back up stoped humming any Idea what’s going on Feedback greatly appritiated
If the charcoal becomes overly saturated with fuel it will cause them to fail. This can be caused by an over filled tank. If you compared the old one with a new one there was probably a noticeable weigh difference.

Can this give me a bad valve purge code and o2 sensor ? I removed it and my canister had charcoal coming out and it when all the way up to my purge valve
Been battling a canister that sent charcoal particles up into my EVAP System on a 96 Nissan Pickup and purchased a filter and go to install it just realize bolt tabs are on the opposite side WHY? because it's got to do something with California Emission something another... that one was $60 the correct one $500 on the same page....cheapest found was $160.... might cut that old sucker open with saw and revamp it.
So why did it fail? Saturation of petrochemicals in the charcoal? Or deterioration of the foam filters allowing charcoal bits or excessive fumes to escape? Or something else?
I'm having a gas vapor smell issue on my 2002 DOHC 3.0 Ford Taurus. Without me having looked at it yet, could the EVAP canister be causing the problem ? I've seen no check engine light, and no codes.
So, two chambers so that if the user overfills his gas tank on a hill the raw gas only gets into one side, then the other side has a chance of pulling off the evaporated fuel into the intake with less chance of inhaling charcoal pellets? Are the two chambers connected by an internal pathway or is there a tube connecting the two? Does the vent always lead to the same chamber as the tank, with tubing to the purge solenoid on the other side? Or do I have it backwards? I would have thought failure would be saturation of pellets, not degradation of a flimsy filter. As you say, pellets draining out either side is a sure sign the filter on that side has failed. Nice video, Brian.
At least on my Mazda, the purge valve and gas tank vent are connected to the same side - so the two chambers are not meant to keep liquid fuel on the opposite side of the purge valve like you were thinking. The other side is just the atmospheric vent side. Fumes first go in to the chamber that the purge valve is connected to and then into the chamber where the atmospheric event is.
Hi there, very interesting to see what's in it! Could this part or the valve also be failing causing the car to have trouble idling but without causing a failure code in the ECU? My car runs on LPG (liquid gas) most of the time by the way, could that be causing this part to dry up or get saturated faster maybe?
A significant amount of poisonous gasses hanging around in your breathing air. If you just toss it, you'll have a huge vacuum leak, P0171, P0174, poor fuel economy, rough running 2 minutes into driving. potentially spilled gas on the ground/car, fuel leak smell, wasted fuel etc. You'd have to re program your computer and or disconnect your purge solenoid.
briansmobile1 Hey, I appreciate your response. I've actually got a 1986 Nissan d21 hardbody that I purchase which is missing one. Do you think the evap cannister missing would cause enough of an evap leak to make it run really rough and not have much power?
Las fallas del recipiente generalmente son una fuga, una ruptura del diafragma o contaminación. Si el combustible se acumula debido a una falla en otra pieza, puede hacer vacío para eliminarlo.

I'm glad you tore that apart so I don't have to! Next I'd like to see some brats or hot dogs roasted over the burning embers of all that charcoal. Does it light like that matchlight stuff?
You don't even know how to spell carcinogenic. They'll be fine as long as you let it burn 5-15 minutes first. I use old gas to start my BBQ with when its around. You just have to burn it off.
When my canister started to throw codes, i sold the car! Every screw holding purge solenoid valve were rusted shut who put that thing in the car in a first place. Btw, did Brian just do 360 without falling on skis ?
That was definitely a crash and roll! lol Yeah, EVAP systems are a necessary evil, but kind of a duplication of resources to the extreme. If only there were a way to simplify vehicles to have power from one big source that had filters on it and then you could channel and store that power in a clean safe way in our vehicles. THAT would be awesome! No more catalytic converters, evap systems, EGR coolers, DPF's etc.
I saw your video on the evac purge solenoid and how to check. Awesome and thanks for being informative and right on point. I wish I'd found the video yesterday. I brought the canister down off of my 2007 toyota camry v6 by the way. Bright red moon roof. Anyway now that I have it off due to not finding your video yesterday and it being likely the purge solenoid and not the canister. My question is. Can i clean out the canister with water?
Great Video! Quick Question, whats the best way to go about removing/replacing the charcoal canister on a 2010 Camry LE? That thing is dug in there and hard to get to...any advice?
Got a Subaru P1443 and was suspecting the evap canister spewing bits of charcoal into one of the solenoids. Are there any good troubleshooting steps to confirm the diagnosis?
Mag tap it lol epic and you kinda sound like Seth Rogan which is cool. My Toyota Celica is a pain to fill up and I think the canister is at fault or the purge valve, great video bro. Thanks

Thank you Brian, to repay you for your great videos I will tell you this.... I had a Tacoma last week with a code P0442 and P0446...EVAP Vent valve. Problem was that you have to buy the entire canister from Toyota at about $350-500. Can't get just the valve even though same as the front mainly, right?! So on a wim I got one from a Camry from then junk yard and it has the same plug and I just customized the hoses. Dude got his sticker and all set for another year. I'm happy and customer is too.

I Would put My 1979 Firebird Formula 455 V8 Big Block back on the road, it needs nothing and it doesn't have a Computer not like the Vehicles they make in todays,
Paid $500 to replace vapor/charcoal canister? Did get ripped off? $280 ish for parts and rest for labor, including diagnostic in the beginning...2002 Toyota Corolla it's 2020!
How would the diagnostic system ever know that the canister is bad? It's only checking pressure and vacuum. Nothing you showed there should have affected the leak down test.
Brian, I've thought that EVAP canisters just had some filter which would fail over time and let the charcoal come through. This was nice to bring theory to reality. :)
That's what I think caused mine to fail. I had several 5 gallon cans of fuel and dumped them into the tank until it over filled the tank. Possibly flooded the canister.

That's correct. Modern gas can'ts (cans, but they can't) don't work on a '99 Elantra filler neck. It fills the purge line and EVAP can full of fuel.

What you think if you have code P0441 and P0446 on Toyota Camry Le V6 2001?
Huh. I've always wondered what those things did and how they worked. You got my sub!
Great Video! Quick Question, whats the best way to go about removing/replacing the charcoal canister on a 2010 Camry LE? That thing is dug in there and hard to get to...any advice?
Can anyone tell me what would happen if charcoal beads are spreading out of the canister? Would it Clough the gas filter and the gas pump?
Got a Subaru P1443 and was suspecting the evap canister spewing bits of charcoal into one of the solenoids. Are there any good troubleshooting steps to confirm the diagnosis?
Yes. Invert the can nipples side down and tap on the counter. If junk comes out like this one did- it's statistically highly probable.
Mag tap it lol epic and you kinda sound like Seth Rogan which is cool. My Toyota Celica is a pain to fill up and I think the canister is at fault or the purge valve, great video bro. Thanks
I follow your channel for while, it's good
always wondered what was in those buggers!
Brian or anyone really, I am looking to purchase the Autel MS906TS Diagnostic System w/TPMS. What are your thoughts? Should I pull the trigger?
I dont have that system, but I do have their TPMS tool that came on a deal with my maxidas and it works awesome. I think their product line is decent. I believe the MATCO tool truck brand scanner is made by Autel.
Great video. I would have done this myself and probably cut my finger off. Many thanks.
Love the face meme pictures. I love you're comedy angles.
Thanks Ivan

Grinder, Skillsaw, Chainsaw. whatever it takes!
2006 Pontiac Torrent 3.4L V6
Could i Eliminate the vapor canister all together as this is annoying, This is the second time in 6 Months had to replace it.
Vapor Solenoid. as when i shut off my vehicle waiting for around 10 minutes you gets a knocking noise right under the drivers side seat under the Vehicle that's where the Vapor Canister is located.
If the cost of fuel wasn't so expensive here in Ontario Canada at a $1.50 Liter.
I Would put My 1979 Firebird Formula 455 V8 Big Block back on the road, it needs nothing and it doesn't have a Computer not like the Vehicles they make in todays,
I subscribed because I like your info and great presentation and humar.
Its like one big a HEPA filter because of EPA. But it reduces your milage
Some evap canister Brian go strait fo ths pcv on the valve cover to send the fumes back to the intake to be burned
Couldn't you just put a mesh over the inlet or outlet and jam it back into the hose and hose clamp? Problem solved? Or similar solution lol
How are you? Do you think these codes are as you have the bugs
P2401 p2402 p2419
It's full of mouse poop, no wonder it didn't work! :D
Haha, you're a Utah guy. The ice cream gave it away. Thanks for the great video
I need to get my ski legs back. Then ski trip.👍
maybe a big in line filter?
Skiing looks fun as hell
Paid $500 to replace vapor/charcoal canister? Did get ripped off? $280 ish for parts and rest for labor, including diagnostic in the beginning...2002 Toyota Corolla it's 2020!
How would the diagnostic system ever know that the canister is bad? It's only checking pressure and vacuum. Nothing you showed there should have affected the leak down test.
Military back ground, maybe Marine?
Brian, I've thought that EVAP canisters just had some filter which would fail over time and let the charcoal come through. This was nice to bring theory to reality. :)
Ironically a hacksaw would have saved you a lot of time and effort.
You would think so.
I love this guy!😁😁
Thanks David!
I like videos where if a guy is cutting corners on safety at least he tells you where he is doing it and what not to do. :-) LOL
No surprise to me. Toyota just has better parts than Hyundai. Wish we could chop through more in comparison.
I like your attitude
If you don't overfill the tank by topping off the fuel tank, the canister will last 20 years or well over 200,000 miles.
That's what I think caused mine to fail. I had several 5 gallon cans of fuel and dumped them into the tank until it over filled the tank. Possibly flooded the canister.
That's really good. A lot more of your subscribers watch than mine do, lol.
New subscriber here. Awesome video very informative
Helpful video thanks
Ave would be proud
I’d say open up empty replace outer components and re-glue it and gain extra 5 ponies!
