I've owned 8 Toyotas and never ran premium. I did have a huge problem in my first tundra where the headlight bulb went out at just under 300,000 miles so that sucked, I had to buy a $6 bulb at AutoZone. I did make it home on one headlight so it had that going for it.
Wife and I both had v8’s. 04 and 05. I traded mine in two years ago with 296k for a new runner. Traded her 04 in a few years back as well. I reflect back and wish I kept both lol. Such solid vehicles those v8’s. I still look online locally here in nc for potential used ones. There is one up in Jersey I saw recently online that’s for sale. An 04 with 12k miles on it which is absolutely nuts. There selling it for 33k. Great vehicles
One failure point I think that’s worth a mention is the fan clutch bracket bearing. They are notorious for seizing up causing the serpentine belt to burn up and snap Literally just happened to my 04 limited 2 weeks ago after 267k miles So when you do a timing belt water pump service make sure you replace the fan clutch bracket as well cause they updated the part with a sturdier bearing
Dude trippy, but 04 limited here as well. Nearly identical mileage, 269k, and my clutch bracket failed and snapped the serp belt. It was funny cause it's the only time a Toyotas left me stranded.
Take off the manfolds and weld them on the inside where the flange meets the tubes. Fixed for life. But headers give good bump in power, especially long tube from dirtydeeds. 2uz can run on 87 octane but can can take advantage of higher octane by advancing timing.
4:56 VTEC is variable valve LIFT, not timing. Timing is how long the valve is open, lift is how far the valve is open. VTEC has two cam profiles accomplished by having two lobes per valve. This is why people say VTEC kicks in or that it's "on" because there are just two different modes of operation. VVTi adjusts the ratio of the camshaft drive to the actual cam rotation via gears. The gears mean the timing can be changed in small increments.
Great video. My stock 03 V8 gets about 16-17 mpg in commute driving and 18-19 on long distance trips, and that is on regular gasoline. It'll probably get better mileage on the recommended premium. So far I got lucky with the exhaust manifolds, maybe due to the CA environment, or because mine is not a VVT model.
On my 07 tundra 5.7 L, the exhaust leak was on the air injection pump flange. It is possible to reach in, pull back the heat shield, and JB weld around the flange and air injection pump port in order to stop the leak without taking off the exhaust manifold.
I see MPG is all over the place depending on many things in 4Runner forums / groups. When I lasted tested my 5th gen 4Runner Limited with fulltime 4wd with same 285/70R17 tires it gave 21mpg on a short 50mile drive. I use 87oct too and my 4Runner is almost stock expect tires weighing at 5060lbs (3rd row model). City mpg test is not possible as we spend lot of time in the school lane, lot of stand still time with engine running. As for the spare tire 5th gen 4Runners do fit 285/70R17 in spare tire location.
Great info. I recently got my first 4th gen 4runner. 2005 Limited V8 4WD. To be fair, it has the bigger gas tank. I made it from north Alabama to mid-west Michigan on about 1.9 tanks of gas. That's about 41 gallons. Filled up, and only stopped once to refill from near empty. Average speed about 75 highway. Actually the best vehicle I ever had on gas. I usually get like 13mpg or 7mpg with all the garbage I had. My 05 4runner is all stock everything, and tire size. 265/65/17.
Thankyou for sharing! In the market for my first Toyota product, I want a used v8 4th gen 4runner. Something that will tread snow and go offroad no problem.
I believe they are full time 4WD because that’s how the Lexus GX’s come and the frame/underpinnings between the V8 4runner and GX470 are identical. There maybe more to it but that is my understanding.
The ‘03 had the less capable trailer hitch but they changed that in ‘04 or ‘05. My ‘03 routinely got 18-20mpg combined on stock tires and wheels. The ‘06 VVT got a bump in horse power but the torque numbers went down if I remember correctly.
I put 20k into my 2006 v8 4 runner in the last 3 years 😅 all I have left is Doug thorley headers, borla exhaust, and a roof tent/awning. As far as the intake issues I had to get my top end rebuilt because of recalled manifold parts. It was over 3k. Also my center diff lock locked up. This is also a “common” issue if you do not regularly exercise the system. That was also over 3 grand to fix lol.
Regarding transmission dipsticks; my 2003 has a dipstick. My wife's 2005 does not. Regarding no 2WD setting; the V8 models of 4th Generation 4Runner have FULL TIME 4WD and not part time. That is to say that the transfer case has a differential in it (along with the front and rear difs). The transfer case allows the front and rear drive shafts to rotate at different speeds during steering operations so that you don't blow something in the drive train. If the computer detects wheel slippage, it will lock the transfer case differential to correct the slippage. This is a neat feature when you are pulling away from a stop at an icy intersection. However, when you are driving in heavy snow or on a "skating rink", it is best to use the manual lock 4WD button that is to the left of the steering column. That way, you don't have to wait for the computer to lock the dif for you. Machines with 2H,4H, and 4L are PART TIME 4WDs. Generally speaking, the transfer case has no differential in it but has a dual range setup (High & Low). The 2WD or 4WD mechanism is usually a clutching device that disables/enables the front drive axle (I have this on a Nissan Frontier and a GMC 2500HD)
In my 06 2uz 4runner the throttle response is slightly sharper with 91 octane but it's hard to notice. I got 14.7 on my last tank full in normal commuting (95% city driving)
03 4.7 with 195xxx picked it up off a fire fighter fir 4200 cash when it had 160xxx. Sild my 2nd gen the next day for 2400 bucks had 297k owned it since high school

3:59 Do you even know anything??🤦🤦 The V8 4Runner gets the more premium full-time 4WD transfer case with a torsen center differential. The V8 being the upgrade engine option gets the better 4WD system. All wheels are powered all the time while with the part time system you are stuck with 2WD on high traction surfaces. That includes wet roads. The ONLY Toyota model that had 4WD with a center differential that could also be put into 2WD was the 2nd gen Sequoia and that's because Toyota put a lot of effort into the development of it with it being body on frame and with an independent rear suspension. It's from a time when Toyota wanted to make the best vehicle in the segment.
Where to see details about suspension and lifts? I have ARB heavy bumper and Bilstein 5100 unknown springs and dont like how it drives over small obstacles when have rolling speed.
I can tell you from personal ownership of a 2007 4 runner with the 4.0 liter v6 I can without trying to totally roast my rear tires. But sense I have BFG at ko2's on my runner I'm not putting my foot down too hard at all to roast my rear tires.
I know this is a hot topic but personally I can feel a difference between 93 and 87 on my 03. On 87 my engine tends to lug more and generally feels more lazy than on 93 - highway driving is where I notice this the most. That being said premium is all I run. My manual doesn't say it's required, but is "recommended" for peak performance.
it a 4runner but gx460 owner. i have the frame mounted hitch but the sticker says you need a weight distribution device if you want to tow the max amount. think its 6500 lb. i’ve towed around 4000 and there is no way i’ll feel comfortable towing over 50% more than what i have already experienced.
I feel the same way. The camper trailer I pulled was about as big as I'd feel comfortable with towing - hp and tq aren't the issue, it's stability on a windy highway that is concerning!
I’m buying a 2005 V8 from a friend, and it’s in great shape other than an intermittent ticking noise that he couldn’t get the car to make while we were checking it out. He doesn’t think it’s the manifolds, says it’ll come up randomly, not really with weather changes. The only other thing we can think of is valve tapping, so we’re having the mechanic check the valves. Anything else that might be causing a ticking noise besides the manifolds? Thanks!
“Piston slap is generally caused when the cold running clearance (piston-to-wall clearance) is large enough that when the piston rocks from side to side in the bore it “slaps” the side of the cylinder and causes noise,”
Thanks for this video! I appreciate it! I'm looking to run the MR2 & 4runner combo too. My original owner 2008 RAV4 Limited V6 is at 397,000km, and I've been "ogling" at V8 4runner's for almost a year now. Working from home since pandemic (or I'd be at around 480,000km on RAV4), so I can live with that mpg of the 2UZ. I love the look of the 4th gen, and regret not buying one in 2008. I just hate the thought of spending $20k+ on a 4runner that's as old as my RAV4. 😬 I think the determining factor for me is gonna be seeing what the 6th gen 4runner looks like (I expect that the interior will look great - I like the new Taco & LandCruiser interior - but don't have confidence in the exterior looking as good as the 4th gen).
Oh man you have one of those RAV4s with the V6 those are very desirable I'd say they're just as good on pick up as the new RAV4 Prime if not a little better
Anybody else had replaced their LCA (lower control arms) yet? I just got back from my usual 5k maintenance/oil change, inspection stuff (I have 178,673 miles on 4th gen) and mechanic recommends I should replace the LCA cuz it's leaking and 'thinks' the ball joint is non-greasable anymore unless they fully inspect it, but they're confident it needs replaement since it's really old. I told them in a few months I'll come back and call them (my 4runner isn't my daily). Unsure if I should go for OEM or aftermarket though. I have a 1-yeard old 3-inch lift for mine and also a 1-year old after market UCA
@@CanadianGearhead oh okay then. how much of a difference? you realize headers are after the engine, the fuel has already exploded and made its power, right? So after the combustion chamber ignites and as the exhaust gas is travelling through the headers into the tail pipe, what exactly is inceasing the MPG? Thanks!
A vehicle rated for "UP TO" 7,000 pounds towing should NEVER tow that amount. Engineers will tell you to subtract 30% of the maximum for safe and reliable towing that will not put undue stress on the vehicle. Therefore, a vehicle rated for 7,000 should only be towing 5,000 pounds.
if anything it would be the opposite since the failure point would be higher than the towing amount. The point of failure and issues is probably 9k to 10k pounds but they wouldn't list 7k if you couldn't do it. And with these trucks being old now people would know if it was safe and possible. I'm sure people have towed more and been fine too.
The point of failure is different than point of use. "UP TO" is the key to what I'm saying. Although I am not an automotive engineer I did work as a construction engineer. I fully understand what you are saying but I do not recommend anything be used at it's maximum load.@@swron_rules
My good engineer friend doesn't have a problem with it. I towed my 6000+ pound trailer across Canada and back with my 2007 V8 4runner. In 4th gear the entire time and never drove more than 100 KMS per hour. Always gentle on acceleration and I drove sensible. Not one problem driving over 10,000 kms.
I have the 2006 Toyota 4Runner V8 Sport Edition. I moved and shipped it to Costa Rica. It currently has 42,000 original miles. I still enjoying drive my truck, and it's design. I use regular gas, because gas in Costa Rica is about $5.00 per gallon. I get about 15 miles to the gallon on average. I don't care very much for the newer 4Runner designs, they look to boxy, and not as sporty. And, the prices have skyrocketed.
Just wanted to let you know that there is such thing as a 2WD V8 but they are extremely rare. I’m from CT so I have a 4WD V8 but when I went to visit family out in Phoenix, AZ, one of their neighbors who talked to because I saw had a really clean V8 4th gen. It actually turned out to be a 2WD. They said they special ordered it from the factory exactly like that when it was brand new. They didn’t need 4WD since they live in Phoenix.
@@kindkira7364 I’m telling myself that..I’m worried about all the fixes I’d have to do. It’s sold by a dealership. But I’m not sure how good or bad it actually is.
@@luckycomments dealerships sketch me out lol. Take it to a mechanic and have it checked out first. Obviously not the mechanic of the dealership. Also ask for car fax for accident report.
@@CanadianGearhead "the V8s only have a 4HI and 4LOW, there's no 2WD setting on these whatsoever" can be a bit confusing, but I see what you are saying.
I tried looking buy a 4runner in colorado and prices are insane. But I could get a newer nissan pathfinder 4.0L way less mileage, leather , sunroof , 3rd row seating larger cargo capacity, more towing capacity for half that of a 4runner. I ended up getting a 2011 pathfinder 4x4 140k mikes, leather sunroof for $5k from a dealer not private seller in 2024. A toyota 4runner that age mileage, 4x4 leather, sunroof would have been $10k. Now the reliability isn't as great as toyota. mainly nissan 4.0l need do timing chaing , idler pulley, water pump, radiator, trans cooler as maintenance, be $2.5k job but the nissan 4.0l still are known go over 300k miles .
It will be worth it. I have both a 2005 Xterra SE 4x4 with 403,xxx and a 2008 Pathfinder V8, 4x4 with only 140,xxx miles. That VQ-4DE is an outstanding engine once the secondary timing chain guides and possible SMOD have been resolved. Still no leaks or burning oil on this Xterra V6 dynamic motor.
Your reasoning for why the V-8 do not have 2wd selection is a little off because they do have 2wd V8s. the reason you can’t put a four-wheel-drive. V8 into H2 is because there is no room for an ADD diff under the front of the V8. Also the pre facelift V6 have frame mount rear hitches
I'm sceptical of anyone's knowledge when they claim 285 as a tire size, as if that one number is relevant or helpful. Also, the V6 trailer hitch is NOT mounted to the bumper. C'mon...
As far as I understand the VVTi V8 IS an interference engine if the timing belt breaks. The non VVTi (early version) isn't interference. But always use the ORIGINAL Toyota belt (mitsuboshi)...yes its spelled correctly. DO NOT use 3rd party belts including Gates. Something about toyota belts just last loooong past the life span. There is an AISIN timing belt kit on Amazon that has the OEM parts with the belt, water pump and so on. Same manufacturer as/for toyota.
Lol every time electric car enthustists brag about how much money they save on gas. I had to hold my breath pretend im invisible. Yea every grade 94 full pump is $100 But there is not a single seconds that I regret and know deeply i will hold on to my 4th gen 4runner till the day i die. I literally celebrate her birthday like a milestone every year. Yep she is a healthy 21 this year. Couldnt be more proud 🎉
Vvti for the 2uzfe is nothing like vtec, it’s just variable cam phasing aka timing, vtec changes with two cam live profiles, and yes v8 4Runner awd have a center differential no matter what the keyboard warriors says, it’s just cleverly built into the transfer case smart Toyota smart

I feel the difference in the midrange as well!
89 octane was what the PO used and it’s what I run on his recommendation. For background information I’m the 2nd owner of my 04 V8
87 baby
Best year of 4th gen v8 to try and find?
it a 4runner but gx460 owner. i have the frame mounted hitch but the sticker says you need a weight distribution device if you want to tow the max amount. think its 6500 lb.
i’ve towed around 4000 and there is no way i’ll feel comfortable towing over 50% more than what i have already experienced.
I feel the same way. The camper trailer I pulled was about as big as I'd feel comfortable with towing - hp and tq aren't the issue, it's stability on a windy highway that is concerning!
15 mpg combined ain bad! My 98 Explorer V6 with a small lift etc I get 12 or 13 with 2/3 stop and go 1/3 higheay... eek!
Hey I have a 2wd 2005 v8 4Runner sport edition with 137,xxx miles but I can’t find much information on it online.
Did you ever install the block off plates with the Air injection deactivation kit.
Haven't had time to yet
What is the advantage of this? I'm dealing with that code and I'm wandering why the air Valve seems unnecessary
I have 208000 on original plugs and 87 octane since ive owned it. Bought it at 127000
Where were you able to find the Doug Thorley Headers? I have had trouble finding them. Love the V8 though. Best engine for a 4Runner!
I bought them locally
In case you're still looking, I bought mine from Burton Industries a couple years ago. The guy was a pain to deal with, but no one else had them.
I HAVE A 2005 V8 4WD LIMITED 4RUNNER 166,000 MILES 💪💪
V8 4Runner is. GX470 which is a Land Cruiser in other countries less gadgets less weight better wind dynamics so it will get better mpg
Can the check engine light or any of the lights cause the 4WD system to be disabled ? Is that possible on a V8?
Doesn't disable 4wd, only VSC.
its awd with hi lo transfer case and center diff lock with a viscous coupling
Did you ever have balancing issues with the bigger tires?
No issues but they did require a lot of weight
my 05 v8 4runner has that tick with an obd code p0430 so im sure my exhaust manifold is cracked or my cat is shit. other than that maybe my o2 sensor?
02 sensor would be the cheapest to replace to rule it out, but it's probably the manifold
I bought Moog LCAs and the bushing started squeaking like crazy after 25k. Replaced with new OEM. More expensive but should last way longer
i have a 98 GS400 with the 4L 1UZ V8
i am very lightfooted
yet doesnt' matter
it guzzles gas no matter what.
Just ordered My Sherpa Rack And Side window Pannels and Roto Pax Mounts and gas and water
Nice choice, you're gonna love it
@@CanadianGearhead wish they would get here faster been a week and I can't wait lol 😂😂
what makes you think headers are going to improve miles per gallon?
Because I compared before and after and they did
@@CanadianGearhead oh okay then. how much of a difference? you realize headers are after the engine, the fuel has already exploded and made its power, right?
Not one problem driving over 10,000 kms.
ok@@troybabs
I have the 2006 Toyota 4Runner V8 Sport Edition. I moved and shipped it to Costa Rica. It currently has 42,000 original miles. I still enjoying drive my truck, and it's design. I use regular gas, because gas in Costa Rica is about $5.00 per gallon. I get about 15 miles to the gallon on average. I don't care very much for the newer 4Runner designs, they look to boxy, and not as sporty. And, the prices have skyrocketed.
Don't't skimp on maintenance, 90k miles is not the end of the world
Just wanted to let you know that there is such thing as a 2WD V8 but they are extremely rare.
Yup, 2WD V8 4runners exist, I mentioned their towing capacity in the vid. I was referring to the fact that 4WD models do not have a 2WD setting
They aren't extremely rare.
@@SJDJFJFSKSXNDJWJQI yes they are.
did you maybe think of selling the 4runner?
What should I watch out or look for when buying a 133k mile 4Runner v8? Need help! Should I spend 12k for one?
That would be a very good deal
@@kindkira7364 I’m telling myself that..I’m worried about all the fixes I’d have to do. It’s sold by a dealership. But I’m not sure how good or bad it actually is.
@@luckycomments dealerships sketch me out lol. Take it to a mechanic and have it checked out first. Obviously not the mechanic of the dealership. Also ask for car fax for accident report.
@@kindkira7364big time sketch. I used to be in car sales. Still can’t trust anyone since I’ve left that lol. They’ll sell whatever.
Did our timming belt on our 03 v8 at 200000 kms it was around $1500 at the dealer belt was about ready to blow but it was 20 years old 😂😂
No 2WD?
They used the engines and parts from the GX470/Prado for these, they are full time 4WD. You were getting a LandCruiser/4Runner hybrid.
I'm running 315/70R17s.... 18L/100km
Do you prefer the 03-04 V8 or the 05+ V8?
05+ you can tune but they have a sai. 2003 has no sai but hard to tune. Waiting for yotawerx to offer this. 09 trail is best model. Rear locker option
05+ and bypass the SAIS
You said they don't make a 2WD 4Runner, but I have a 2006 V8 RWD.
Watch it again - I said 4WD models don't have a 2WD setting like the V6s do
@@CanadianGearhead "the V8s only have a 4HI and 4LOW, there's no 2WD setting on these whatsoever" can be a bit confusing, but I see what you are saying.
I mentioned the 2WD V8 4runners when talking about the towing capacity
I looked at my V8 4Runner tow hitch and no, I'm not towing anything with it. The hitch on my little red wagon looks better.
Found a 05 v8 4runner for $4,500, the kicker is its only 183,000mi. This channel will serve me greatly thank you :)
Can you swap a 2wd to a 4wd?
Your reasoning for why the V-8 do not have 2wd selection is a little off because they do have 2wd V8s. the reason you can’t put a four-wheel-drive. V8 into H2 is because there is no room for an ADD diff under the front of the V8. Also the pre facelift V6 have frame mount rear hitches
I mentioned 2WD V8 models in the video. The ADD diff not fitting makes sense though, I'll give you that.
87! It’s still so expensive lol
15 mpg highway on long road trips, completely stock. City's like 9-10.
I get 10mpg on my infiniti m35x so imma get me one
I'm sceptical of anyone's knowledge when they claim 285 as a tire size, as if that one number is relevant or helpful.
Also, the V6 trailer hitch is NOT mounted to the bumper. C'mon...
The full time 4wd V8 is because it shares driveline components with the GX470.
But why is the GX full time then?
@@CanadianGearhead good point. All of them are, as well as the new LC 250 / GX550. No 2wd option even.
Ty
Anyone run 86 octane?
Vvti for the 2uzfe is nothing like vtec, it’s just variable cam phasing aka timing, vtec changes with two cam live profiles, and yes v8 4Runner awd have a center differential no matter what the keyboard warriors says, it’s just cleverly built into the transfer case smart Toyota smart
Anyone else have a horrible smell when the punch it, or when they are going up hill? What could it be?
These Toyotas are kinda known for a sulfur smell during those conditions, especially with the rear window down
Wow only 15mpg I get 21mpg to 19mpg every week
How is possible?
@@andreshenao6574 I drove Moderately I don't floor it for everything or Lead FOOT the peddle I accelerate slow to Moderately. Max mpg I have gotten is 30 but that has only happened 5 times in last 3 years and I was Just Crusing not in a hurry for anything on them tanks
expect a new actuator to coast between $800 to $1800.
The 4.7l v8 4runners have no 2wd and there AWD because of the torque and Power availability to make them safer on wet roads and Awd system is Stronger
They did come in 2wd only, though rare.
That would of only been the 2003 to 2005 year v8 models only for the v8 2wd @ritchierichh
The V8s have AWD/Full time 4WD because it's the same as the Lexus GX.
