Great video, I am trying to decide right now between the two. My only vehicle is a 2019 Camaro SS, and I want something I can daily/take my friends out in and possibly camp, carry kayaks, etc. After your video I think I'm going 4th gen, even if it's a little more expensive and a little less visually appealing. The extra space, smoother ride, more power with the V8, better interior make it worth it to me, it will only be used for minor offroading so depart/approach angles aren't the biggest deal in the world, and even then a lift is possible which makes that a non-issue. Great video and thanks for making it, subbed!

I have owned both. 3 gen tbh looks classic . Have recently been looking for a 5 speed since crashing my rigged out v6 with icon, Gobi all the works. However I have been borrowing my grandmas 3rd gen and I can honestly say it makes me mad how small it is. I’m very tall and the 4th gen felt better suited for someone tall. And it drives sooooo much better, to me the 3rd will always have a place in my heart but I opted for another 4th gen but v8 this time and will likely nkt look back.
I had a Ford F150 4x4, Dodge Ramcharger 4x4, three z71's (2 Chevy- 1 GMC) and a Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 Cummins. My LX470 is my first Japanese vehicle and I don't see my self ever going back. I love my Lexus and she runs as good at 250k as she did at 50k. That ain't happening with anything from GM.
True our 02 4runner has 233k miles and the engine still works like a clock. I stop at a red light and you don’t even hear one squeak coming from under the hood for a 20 something year old this is amazing
I’ve used my 3rd Gen to tow my 91 Corolla for about 100 miles. It did great. Mind you it was my first time towing and I didn’t realize I had to turn off the O/D for better towing capability.
@@matthewshort4351 Yes I am sure you could easily. Just be sure to turn off the Over Drive (there is a button on the transmission shifter) and a green O/D light should light up on your dash.
I have a 2002 4Runner (the last model year for Gen3 and the best model year imo). It has 255K miles and still running strong. I fix my cars myself so I will NEVER sell it. The day it finally breaks beyond repair, a huge piece of me will die. A lot of time and love has been well-spent on my 4Runner baby.
I thought the 3rd gen was a little too cramped and underpowered, and I didn't like the 4th gen interior (window swtches are too low and climate control is weird), but I liked the power and size. So I split the difference and got a '02 Sequoia. Rugged yet comfortable interior with some stretching room but still tidy exterior dimensions and great V8 power and flexability to meet any needs I may have be it towing or loading.

@@NotSoHandyCarGuy yeah, I love mine. I was checking out the JBA shorty headers with a borla exhaust, but it’s a huge job, and I have to wait for my stock exhaust to break before I go changing anything.
I've found that KBB values, at least on the 4th gens, are way off the mark. You won't find a v8 AWD for less than 10K, even over 200K miles. If you do it either has sever frame rot or some mechanical issue. Private party is even higher at around 12 to 15K.

After some you tube research and lots of luck I bought a 2002 4 runner with 187000 on it , I searched along time here in west central Florida it seems everybody wants Toyota trucks because of the dependability and value so even if you do find one in really good shape with car prices are now up there , the one I bought didn’t have any maintenance paperwork or history with it but it did come with an assortment of Disney land stickers on the back window and chocolate and coffee stains on the back carpet ,I’m think’n soccer moms ride , the last oil change sticker said it was done in Sebring fla, so that was my first thing to take care of , it does a have a sticker when the timing belt was changed at 67000 mi. So that will be on the list of things I want to take care of right away along with valve cover gaskets , and a leaking right rear wheel seal , it’s got the original radiator in it and I’m thinking of changing that also just to be safe since they have been known to leak into each other mixing tranny fluid and coolant , it runs remarkable for a 20 yr old truck I paid $4600 and with the maintenance up grades and having a buddy that was a Toyota mechanic and has his own shop I think I scored , this truck is super clean outside and under , I have a feeling that we’re going to be together along time !
Sorry for the late response. Glad you asked. One has spent its life in upstate New York, and the other one in northern Massachusetts. They zip codes don’t drastically affect their resale value, but I figured I’d try to be as accurate as possible. Thanks!
2004 v8 150k California runner. ... runs smooth as silk. Absolutely no rust. However, front suspension bushings are worn out and the steering rack is starting to leak .. needs new control arms.
That’s actually interesting to know! What year was it introduced? To my understanding, the fourth GEN could only have full-time four-wheel-drive because of that center differential and extending yolk in the drive shaft.
Not-So-Handy Car Guy It ran from 1996-2002, all the way through. From ‘96-‘00, it was only on the Limited trim. In ‘96-‘98, it used a three position straight shifter, with 2Hi, 4-Hi Fulltime and 4Low. It had a button on the side to engage part time 4Hi and lock the center diff. From ‘99-‘00 it used a J-style shifter like the one in the video, but again used a button to lock the center diff on the side of the 4WD shifter. In ‘01-‘02, the rear diff lock was discontinued. This freed up a switch on the dash. All trims (SR5 and Limited) got fulltime 4WD, with a lockable center diff using a dash mounted button. They all used a J-style shifter, with no button on the shifter itself.
@@FonzoCapone All Third Gen Limited 4Runners have the capability to use full time 4WD. For ‘97, you should just shift into 4HI and not click the button on the shifter. The owners manual will help confirm this.
Duuude I’m in my 3rd gen 4Runner rn but I’ve been looking at the 4th gens for the bigger engine so I can tow.. I’m having such a hard time letting go of my 3rd gen its been so good to me
Center lock differential is just 4hi. Vehicles that have full time AWD like the 4gen usually have center diff lock. It’s just regular 4hi. If you had rear or front lockers that’s different.
I just sold my 3rd gen not too long ago. I picked up a limited 4wd vvti v8 2005 4runner yesterday. World of difference, better in every single way except exterior looks. At least my 3rd gen was a trash can running on a bad head gasket (2 misfires) for the last 11k miles and I had to keep topping off the oil, and it needed all new suspension, brakes and an engine. Paid 4500 for a pos 98 Paid 4200 for a stupid clean 05 and it's x10 more vehicle Only things I liked better about the 3rd gen was the boxy exterior look and the 4WD lever. I had a blast off roading in it. Very simple and strong southern truck. Drove it up from AL to MI on shitty suspension, brakes and a misfiring engine, then sold it. 315k original miles. Needed too much work. Rear climate control on the 3rd gen comes out from under the front seats btw. Don't try to tow anything with the 3rd gen. Not alot of power. Not even worth trying.
Hey Guys I Need some help. My Dad bought a 3rd gen 1997 4 runner way back in 1999 and he still has it to this day(2021 400,000 Miles). He loved the thing and took care of it . He doesn’t drive it as much anymore and wants to give it to me( it would pain him to junk it) what should I do ? Is it worth maintaining? Do you think it could make 500,000? Should I throw in a new engine? Part of me feels crazy caring about such an old car that’s done it’s days, but another part of me believes that it’s a classic that’s worth restoring( it’s not in bad shape). What do you think?!

If your a responsible owner who washes the undercarriage after major storms it’s not a problem and himself that’s only if you live in an area that gets a lot of snow. I have seen beautiful high mileage 4runners and Tundras and Tacomas with no frame rust in warm weather states.
I was initially looking for a '05+ for the VVTI but ended up with an '03 since it was clean, rust-free, just had the timing belt done, and was the right price. It is lifted on 33s, with sliders, full Prinsu rack, skids, plenty of extra weight, and it still has plenty of get up and go here in the NC mountains. Has no problem passing on interstate uphills. When I was searching, I read a ton of responses indicating that the difference is barely noticeable between the non-VVTI and the VVTI V8s when accelerating. If I were you, I'd go for the cleanest, most well-maintained T4R instead of buying based on VVTI. Good luck with the search!
I agree with Trenton! If the stars align and you can find a clean one with vvti, then go for it. But it’s definitely more important to go with a well-maintained and rust free T4R.
I have both a 2006 limited 150,000miles v6 a 2007 Sport v8 278,000miles and a 1999 limited 250,000miles. All awesome! The 06&99 get 15-18 MPG, my 07 gets 10-11 MPG. I can get better mileage going down hill the wind at my back maybe!
I own both a 3rd and a 4th gen. I love both of them. But there is no comparison between power. The 3rd gen is slow and comfortable Where the 4th is actually snappy with its power it’s comfortable and definitely has a better look to it. Far as comparing the off road capabilities of the two both of my 4 runners have 33” tires and a 3” lift if I had a rough trail in front of me I’d chose the 3rd gen the 4wd just work’s amazing in that model if I was choosing a daily/ light off road vehicle I would choose my 4th gen .
And if it's specifically a 4th gen V8, it's a 5-speed for '03 and up. Trans got a dipstick in the '03 V8, '04+ lost the dipstick... Just some added info.
I haven't found an SUV yet that I would cause me to give up my TRD supercharged 3rd gen 5-speed manual with a factory rear locking diff. The 3rd gen's supercharged V6 has a good amount more pull than the V8, plus the vehicle weighs considerably less. The 3rd gen feels like a Toyota; the 4th gen feels like a Chevy Tahoe, IMHO.
@@kinguin7 They're very rare because it was a dealer option, not a factory option. In the time I've been looking around at 4runners, I've only come across one 3rd gen with the TRD supercharger.
Pro Tip: The two 4Runners don’t have a Sunroof, they have a Moonroof. Common confusion between sunroof and moonroof. Both 4Runners are great “OLD” trucks, but you really can’t compare the two especially if the suspension are still original and if a vehicle needs maintenance.
Look for a very long time. Join 4th gen 4runner groups on facebook. Make a checklist of things that need to be inspected related to the model. (frame that, exhaust manifold crack, etc)
Opinions vary, but personally I'd stay away from the xreas suspension optioned models if possible, although they can be deleted and changed to the regular 4runner suspension parts
Cbiz I’m about 6ft even. There was still a little room left in the 3rd gen, so I wouldn’t worry about headroom too much, especially if there’s the sunroof, which adds an inch or two. But definitely go test drive one just in case.

Great video and thanks for making it, subbed!
chadly1337 awesome, man! Glad you liked the video! I was in the same boat with my other 4th gen- I had a 2011 mustang gt and the 4Runner was the perfect 2nd car to complete the formula. However I have been borrowing my grandmas 3rd gen and I can honestly say it makes me mad how small it is. I’m very tall and the 4th gen felt better suited for someone tall.
Yea the window switches are terrible
My 2000 3.4 SR5 5 speed 4wd, locker, has over 300,000 miles on it and it still runs like a champ.

🤣As the owner of a V8, I find your fussing over a 3rd-gen’s sucky fuel economy to be rather comical!!
@@SlightReturn666 Is the fuel economy that bad with a v8? I was under the impression that fuel economy would be better since you have a more powerful engine that didn’t have to work so hard to get itself going and since the v8 was more modern with vvti.
@@coltin8801 well, it's pretty tough around town. Realistically 14-15. On the highway, if you keep your foot out of it and it's not too hilly, you can get 20 but just barely! Awesome detailed review! Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Love the 3rd gens but they're all worn out and rusted around here, so I have a very clean 4th gen limited V8.
I have a 1st Gen Sequoia and my exhaust manifolds have a slight crack in them that quiets up when they get hot. I really love my Sequoia. The V8 has plenty of power and the room is amazing. I've driven to lake george, jefferson, and maryland with it. Very smooth ride.
Ahh, the old cracked manifolds. You probably saw in the 4Runner vid, we’re having the same issue with our V8. I’ve been looking into the Doug Thorley long tube headers, and going catless. But it’s a big job that’s going to have to wait until spring 😂. Glad you’re loving the 1st gen!! Sequoias are beasts.
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy yeah, I love mine. I was checking out the JBA shorty headers with a borla exhaust, but it’s a huge job, and I have to wait for my stock exhaust to break before I go changing anything.
I just picked up a 3rd gen 4x4 and wife has a 4th gen V8. So we get both.
I've found that KBB values, at least on the 4th gens, are way off the mark. You won't find a v8 AWD for less than 10K, even over 200K miles. If you do it either has sever frame rot or some mechanical issue. Private party is even higher at around 12 to 15K.
100% agreed going to look at one for 15 k at 185!
My best friend just gave me her 3rd gen! After my p.o.S Nissan Altima kept breaking down on me. I've put more money in that damn car than what it's worth.
I'm just excited to be a 3rd gen owner! 💛
Welcome to the 4Runner gang!
Don't ever buy Nissan, Dodge, or Chevy. Toyota all the way.
Napanoch! I live in Bloomingburg! glad to see a local car reviewer!
Yes!!! Awesome, we’re in Napanoch a few times a year to visit. Full-time in MA.
Why different zip codes for the KBB value look up?
Sorry for the late response. Glad you asked. One has spent its life in upstate New York, and the other one in northern Massachusetts. They zip codes don’t drastically affect their resale value, but I figured I’d try to be as accurate as possible. Thanks!
I like the 3rd gen... But the 4th gen is my favorite 😁😁😁
2004 v8 150k California runner. ... runs smooth as silk. Absolutely no rust. However, front suspension bushings are worn out and the steering rack is starting to leak .. needs new control arms.

Anyone ever compare specs with a 2008 Pathfinder V-8, 4x4? I was shocked.
Those are sick
The 1st gen and the 5th gen are my favorite 4Runners.
On the 3rd Gen, they actually did have a full time 4WD system. It had 2hi, 4hi part time, 4hi full tim, and 4lo.
@@CalebCissna yes I have a 96 limited with full time 4wd. I love how I can just be driving and engage when needed.
Correct my 98 limited has part time, 4hi, and 4low and rear locker. Best of the best.
@@FonzoCapone All Third Gen Limited 4Runners have the capability to use full time 4WD. For ‘97, you should just shift into 4HI and not click the button on the shifter. The owners manual will help confirm this.

I like them both but I’m 6’6” and can’t fit in a third gen. My 4th gen V8 with a 3” lift is perfect for me.
Center lock differential is just 4hi. Vehicles that have full time AWD like the 4gen usually have center diff lock. It’s just regular 4hi. If you had rear or front lockers that’s different.
My 02 has 4hi 4lo open center diff and also 4hi 4lo with center locked. And a rear locker was also a option
@@vadimnesen8060 in 02 the rear locker wasn’t an option, rear lockers stopped at 2000 on the 3rd gens.

Paid 4500 for a pos 98
Paid 4200 for a stupid clean 05 and it's x10 more vehicle
Only things I liked better about the 3rd gen was the boxy exterior look and the 4WD lever.

Is the VVTI engine in 06-09 that much better than the 03-05?
I'm looking for 06-09 V8s but hard to come by. Seeing more 04 and 05s.
@@trentonclark3689 Can't argue with that statement. Not even sure why I'm limiting to V8s... I guess because of longevity of it versus V6s.

Hi.. I would like to know if 4th gen front seats could fit 3th gen?
What phone Mount is that on the 4th gen?
The 3rd gen has a 4 speed transmission. The 4th gen 05+ has a 5 speed with the extra gear at the low end.
Jon Courtney yes sir, you’d be correct.
And if it's specifically a 4th gen V8, it's a 5-speed for '03 and up. Trans got a dipstick in the '03 V8, '04+ lost the dipstick... Just some added info.
I love my 3rd gen but it’s time for a v8
I haven't found an SUV yet that I would cause me to give up my TRD supercharged 3rd gen 5-speed manual with a factory rear locking diff. The 3rd gen's supercharged V6 has a good amount more pull than the V8, plus the vehicle weighs considerably less. The 3rd gen feels like a Toyota; the 4th gen feels like a Chevy Tahoe, IMHO.
I didn't realize there was a supercharger option.
