    Imagine the 19 year old Franz Schubert sitting at his desk writing such great masterpieces. Who wouldn't like to watch the moment when his hand wrote down what his mind had imagined?. When you close your eyes you can almost see Franz Schubert smiling at some parts.

      Poor Schubert... he taught during the day, wrote music at night. When did he sleep? He was so poor he sold songs for very little money. He had to sneak in to hear Beethoven’s concerts. Yet he wrote over 900 pieces of music! How?

    • @tj-co9go

      Probably quite boring. Schubert would have stayed still by his piano, playing the melody all over again to get it right, or trying to transcribe the clear idea as fast as possible before the inspiration is gone. When I compose pieces I make hundreds and thousands of revisions and dozens of back-up copies on my computer. It takes up hours, often days or weeks when put together. Now doing that with only your piano, mind, paper and pen is even harder, and does require a genius. I have it easy when I can just play the synthesised orchestra on the computer and listen to it to make sure all is correct.

    Schubert's "Tragic" Symphony was the only one I hadn't heard until recently; how it eluded me most of my life is a mystery, it's certainly not because of disinterest. Now I'm treated to excellent performances of this and also the First Symphony given at the same concert! I just learned that the opening of the Fourth was inspired by the opening of Haydn's "Creation", but it also reminds me of the beginning of Edmund Rubbra's Fourth Symphony. It's a fine symphony that shows how Schubert's music had matured in the three years since his First Symphony, more secure and with greater cohesion and dramatic flow. Maestro Orozco-Estrada has the measure of it, and the FRSO play wonderfully as usual.

  • @simonkawasaki4229
    @simonkawasaki4229 4 года назад +9

    This quaint symphony, rather coincidentally, sounds so much like younger Beethoven, because, like Him, Schubert was deeply inspired by the Messrs. Haydn and Mozart, and found his voice by channeling through their tones of orchestration. The sforzandos in the first movement bring me PTSD of Beethoven’s 1st. And not enough has been said about the finale!
    Schubert apparently dubbed the nickname himself, and who are we to minimalize the composer’s feelings of his work.
    And that second movement… the first movement seems like a mere stepping stone to that gorgeous shade of A-flat that Schubert so loved.

    This performance is very good indeed. I would like to second the earlier comment of Peter Bauer below -- I have been looking at a number of performances by this orchestra on You Tube, and the personnel often changes -- players appear, disappear, and appear again. Not just the first chairs, either. On the other hand, it's a wonderful orchestra and seems always to sound good despite these changes. For those who like Schubert I recommend the superb performance of this orchestra (also on You Tube), conducted by Antonello Maricorda, of Schubert's Sixth Symphony, the "little" C major. We must always remember Schubert's age. He was 19 when he composed this Fourth Symphony and 20 when he composed the Sixth.

      This sounds great on my little ipad! By contrast, Harnoncourt’s piece sounds scratchy, with high pitched overtones. That’s due mainly to the audio techniques having improved so much over the years, and also my hearing has not. Still, I love Harnoncourt’s interpretation of Schubert & Mozart.
