Urban sketching is literally my art therapy. When I'm doing it, it clears my mind of all other thoughts.
For real, I quit video games and smoking weed and go outside and sketch instead. Lost weight, got a tan and clear my mind.
Keep returning to this video. I find it so relaxing and positive. Your gentle voice and the way you paint is so helpful to me. All your videos are similar but this one stands out 😊
Your voice is a therapy on its own, thank you!
Thanks Toby, It's always good to be reminded to slow down and be in the joy of the moment. This has helped me very much!
Thank you, Toby. I felt myself relax as I watched, and learn that accepting my art today is good, whether or not the art is good. Taking time to observe and make careful marks is such helpful advice. I find that once I make a mark I don’t like, I rush through to get it over and try the next thing. So going forward, I’ll stop to breathe and look with new eyes.
🙏🙏🙏
I love this poppy composition and I love this video! Toby you're channelling Sir David Attenborough! I think I'll save this one for watching again. Right now I'm waiting for you to observe the wild life about to spring from the petals....
A great reminder to stay present, I to find art meditative but the perfectionism creeps in a lovely to know others struggle....thank you for sharing your journey. You are a very gifted teacher 🙏
Thank you 🙏
What a fabulous collaboration! It was a fabulous mindfulness art video…a reminder ‘to be in the moment’ I am really looking forward to putting it into practice. Thank you Toby
Please do!
I've followed Buddhism for many years.
Before today, i was drawn to your videos/art/style because it felt like a meditation, your voice and pace.
We're creatures of ego, and that perfectionism thing as i understand it comes from our own fear, we know that we can do better and will strive and strive. There was once a musician here in this neck of the woods, Scotland, who to my ear was 'perfect', couldnt fault his work, but for him, he wasn't, and he would fret, anxious, worrying. Maybe that helps, I dont know. Pretty sure most of us have been there.
Maybe we 'need' to 'suffer' a bit in order to get that clarity.
We dont ever reach that state of perfection in our eyes, even if we were there we wouldn't know it.
Keep on keepin Toby👍👌
Thanks 😊
This was very helpful, Toby. I often find that when life is very stressful I move away from making art or am too preoccupied with "stuff" to be mindful of the process. That can lead to distraction/frustration so that the therapeutic effects of sketching are diminished. You've highlighted the importance of bringing my mind into the details of preparing, warming up and sketching slowly and deliberately. I love this sketch BTW!
Hehe thanks!!
Mindful sketching is really helping me to go forward with my art.
Awesome
After pulling THE TOWER as my tarotcard of the day this was fantastically relaxing and got me into sketching after a bit of a drought. Thanks Toby
Glad you enjoyed it!

Love this Toby. You’ve got such a calming voice, you inspire me as always. Keep them coming 😊
Thanks so much!
Love this... and it's a great message. Thank you.
Thank you! This practice has set an awesome tone for my day and I super appreciate all you do and share with us!
You're so welcome!
Appreciate and enjoy watching and learning, please keep on going and sharing.
More to come!
Thank You! For sharing a very personal and yet relevant experience regarding mental health and overcoming perfectionism as it affects our art and life overall. I struggle with it too. But we have a new husky lab puppy too named Bear. He keeps me real. Betty is a cutie !
Hehe I'm sure he does!
Really valuable advice. Thanks for sharing Toby.
Thanks for sharing, that answers some of my challenges with perfectionism.
🕊️
Thanks for this inspiration ❤
❤ this
Excellent video, Toby. Thank you so much!🙏
My pleasure!
Thank you for sharing your therapy tool kit with us, by using watercolour, Toby. "Recognising our "mistakes", letting things go & moving on" is a great mantra to practice, along with giving yourself the time & space to breath too. Greatly appreciate this. 🫶🏼
My pleasure
Thank you❤
You're welcome 😊
Thanks!
Welcome! 🤗
I wish you could do closer views when you do the smaller marks especially, but also all your sketching,I’m seeing two big hand but not so much the mark making, I tried to enlarge that area but it goes out of focus quickly on my phone.
I love your work, do not want to copy it, just see exactly what you do , then when I understand your marks, then go on to make my own😊
Thanks for the feedback
Toby, this mindfulness video is awesome! You are a very gifted person. Thank you.
Wow, thank you!
Thank you Toby, very very good! What kind of paper are you using for this one?
Saunders Waterford press
Mindful art? Has anyone tried it with mindless existence 😂?
🤣
