Hard to tell you how this video was important… I am a stained glass restorer /self employed: I spend all my time trying to make ends meet. And I miss my Hands. Because of you I draw a stupid glue bottle …right now :) it’s horrible . But loved it . Merci 🙏
I wanted to get better at drawing, so I made myself draw every day. It actually did become a chore, like scrubbing the toilet, and eventually I considered giving up art journaling. Made me so sad. I had lost the joy of drawing and making messes in my books. When I gave myself permission to stop drawing, I found that wasn't an option. I did a terrible urban sketch and wrote JOY at the bottom. That's my reminder. And it's gotten better💯
Also, I work in stages and occasionally just use a cellphone photo to remind me what my brain had planned. Edit the photo with the broad strokes, composition, or notes you don't want to forget. Your camera is already in the phone.
I’ve bought a number of pens, watercolors, acrylic paints, paper, etc. but just cannot find the time to create art (the video you linked is a great help with this). I want to do a little everyday but always felt I need a big block of time. Bottom line, this video is precisely what I needed to hear. Thank you for the wonderful ideas and insight.
Thank you for the tips on finding time to do art. I appreciate the fact that you get people to understand that it is okay to take time for art. Some people are brought up with the idea that they should not take time for self care and nourishment. I love being in the zone even for just a few minutes. You gave me things to think about that I had not even thought of.
For a long time ive had a Pinterest folder and a folder on my phone of reference pictures or things that inspire me or just little things things i want to draw at some point and that way when i have a "i dont know what to draw" moment i can go back to the folders and pick a couple of things out :)
He hit a lot of things for me. I want to take time to make art but I tend to make everything or everyone else more important than me making art. But it’s now my time to make some changes for myself! Thanks for the tips❣️ it’s appreciated 😉
Suggestions for prompts.. make cards with different objects, and draw that or combine with another card. For instance, you pull a giraffe card, and a coat. You draw a giraffe wearing a coat, or a coat with a giraffe patch.
Anyone can be an artist? In my town there is a place called Spindleworks that brings together the works of physically and/or mentally challenged citizens. I dare anyone to NOT call them artists! And at my local art store, there is a bowl of chalk on the outside table, with a sign encouraging people to draw on the sidewalk👨🎨 Plus, our town square hosts a farm market every week in the summer - a great source of inspiration 😊
I needed this. I used to sketch all day long and loved it, but lately, I've lapsed and have missed out on the joy of creating and absorbing my surroundings. So Thank-you!
Yes, art is therapeutic, it does so much good in this field. At the same time we should not stifle Olympic hopefuls. They might serve as as inspiration rather than an enemy? Back in school on sports day participants got a certificate just for taking part which was a lovely acknowledgement. And also those who reached or practiced greater skill were honoured for their effort. Unthinkable these days!. We are not allowed to look up- or look over to those who have trodden a lone path which led them to greatness. Anything can be 'art' these days, even a signed toilet. Just swim in mediocre soup. Sorry about my blackpilled ramble on your feed but you asked. Hey, I am subscribed for my regular boot up the backside! Yes, I practice 'art' as I enjoy how it changes my vision rather than what I produce. But man, that feeling of of awe pouring from your heart when seeing excellence is just well... awe. Playing is an indulgence which some of us can only part take in to some degree so your message of: get off idle scrolling and pick up that pen is good advice. Bye :)
Thank you for this encouraging video. We are forming an art community in my small town of Hubbard, Texas. We have 5 artists so far. It's a beginning. Next time we meet, I plan to share this video!
Yes to everything you said! That's how I try to approach art. Stop overthinking it. For me it's not about being an artist. Or making art even. It's about playing and laughing. Expressing. Combining. Interacting. Erasing. Painting over top of. Gluing. Splashing. Just get at it! ❤
Danny, you are a wonderful encourager. I love this video because it is what so many of us need to hear. Great tips. I'm going to watch it again and write every one of them down. And I love that part about "You are an artist." I've always had a hard time calling myself an artist. Thanks for what you do. It does make a difference.
Nice Video. I know the why I can't get myself to do art. What I have never been able to do is get over it. I'm only 77 and been struggling with it since I was a little girl. I guess you can call it "trauma". I don't lack supplies, spent thousands, most not even touched, including the big stuff such as easels (note the plural). Right now, I think I'm almost there. I wonder which of the Danny Sketchbook will do the trick. I do buy the books. (May sound like I am joking but I AM NOT.)
Thank you for the encouragement. Sketching helps me cope with so many things. Today I took coloured pencils and a sketchbook to while away the hours until I could see a doctor!
Your like the new modern Bob Ross, your videos are so calming and very helpful for me. Your art is also very interesting to me, has a sense of whimsical humor mixed with sarcasm.
I have to say that I agree with what Purple... wrote. I was a fan of Bob Ross and used to watch him on TV a long time ago. Even have supplies from then. They store well. But I had the same issue that I am trying to overcome. Never used them. Hope that I will soon be able to. (I have moved to different continents with them, lol. I real meant what I wrote in my comment.)
I keep a watercolor sketchbook, and one thing that's really helped me is having a setup, and I clean up and prepare for the next time, so there's zero resistance to starting. Also every time I stop for the day, I always leave my sketchbook open and turned to a page I'm proud of. Something about that entices me to go look at it again, and then suddenly I'm working on something! And I keep it small, I agree that's a really good tip as well!
thank you for the video. Wanted to ask, what do you do with the art that you've made? The sketchbooks you've filled, the random leaflets you doodled on the back of. I've drawn since I was a kid, but I've always wondered what the point of holding on to 10s or 100s of sketchbooks were if I knew that they would just be more to carry around as I moved. Would love to hear anyone's thoughts on this, thank you. Take care.
The point isn’t to have lots of art you’ve made. It’s to make lots of art. The process over the product. I have my sketchbooks on a book shelf and I like looking back at them. But they are just the memories of the fun I had making them. Like Instagram photos of good meals.
Thank you for this video. Watched it twice. Blessed to be able to do art almost every day. Trying to be worthy of my best supplies is hard because of being new to watercolor. Just started a year ago. I didn’t want to ruin anything until I got much better. I’m going to take your advice and open something new today.😊👍
I never got around to saying that I love the street that you made from used cardboard boxes and paint house by house. Bit by bit makes the picture work. Birdy
Hi Danny, thank you so much for this video! I've recently started drawing and I really appreciate your tips. I'm a Singer-Songwriter from Luxembourg and I feel like your tips also apply to songwriting. Very often, starting is the hardest part, but once you're in the process and you let go of your fear of failure, it's the best feeling in the world!
@@rashedulkabir6227 Thank you for your question, I don't actually write lyrics everyday, but I try to as often as possible. I incorporate music in whatever shape or form into my daily routine though :)
Sometimes I feel like a bundle of contradictions! I can enjoy sketching for 10 minutes, but if I know I’ve only got 10 minutes I usually rush and panic and it ends up rubbish! I think of myself as an artistic person, but I don’t feel able to call myself an artist…. Yet I don’t even know what the distinction is! Haha
Your video is so inspiring! I Have all the art supplies I need ,but they just sit there never used . This has given me so much encouragement . Thank you 🙂🙏🏻
I bought one of those “365 days “ books. I do one page each day. Sometimes I’m inspired to go on and do something else. It’s like a warm up. But at least I do something every day.
Dear Danny you are my muse for art. I needed to hear this. I feel bad if I sit down to draw and feel guilty. Isn't that so terrible, to feel that? Thank you for being such a good mentor.♥
I don't think motovation is a problem. If you are Not motovated, don't do it. I think the real problem are expectations. Most people (especially ones new to the hobby) think about drawing as a huge thing. You need a work station with all your things, you need everything at Hand all the time, drawing means a perfect copy and that costs time. If people where looser and less afraid of making something imperfect, they wouldnt fear starting
Every time i feel artblocked and that i dont have a time to draw, i look whats up. Like so, recently, i realized i only have time for few second sketches and they feel like they are gonna be too messy. Which exactly was the reason for mini artblock - i felt like i dont want to "ruin" my current one. Which is ridiculous, but, thats the tipy of inner thoughts that you cant control sometimes, you need to find ways around them. So i just started new tiny notebook for those messy second doodles and instantly it releaved me psychologically and i draw again
A good tip I use is I have one sketchbook for just about anything, sticking in pictures, trying out materials, practicing various things etc then I have another sketchbook for more polished, refined drawings if I want to do something a bit more in depth, it works well for me
Agree with all tips you provided Danny ( @SketchbookSkool ) except - "We don't have to finish our art in single session". As someone else pointed out that an art session is like an symphony orchestra which can not be paused in the middle and resumed after a break. Because the lack of continuity (flow) that a creative activity demands. Also knowledge workers like us, who carry a lot in our heads post work hours into our personal lives, kind of creates barriers to do any art work even casual one. Any suggestions ?
Hard to tell you how this video was important… I am a stained glass restorer /self employed: I spend all my time trying to make ends meet. And I miss my Hands. Because of you I draw a stupid glue bottle …right now :) it’s horrible . But loved it . Merci 🙏
My English is not very nice but your àrt lesson has inspire me alot thank you very much. I came from Africa the country called Tanzania

Don't judge me, but I also have a sketchbook in the toilet. I don't care. Some of my best work is produced in this "room"!
I keep art supplies in the car because I hate being late for things so I'm usually super early....and wasting time is FREE TIME.
Also, I work in stages and occasionally just use a cellphone photo to remind me what my brain had planned. Edit the photo with the broad strokes, composition, or notes you don't want to forget. Your camera is already in the phone.
Phew. At a glance I was worried that you paint while you drive 😂

Art is about expression, not perfection. What an aha moment when you uttered those words.🎉
😁
Process over the product, great words.
Multiple set ups is really important. I have them in all bags and round the house. Have to be in my eyeline constantly for reminders.

Combining activities really helped me.
Listening to audio books or drawing in a restaurant etc
Thank you! This is all great advice, Danny❤
I tell you what Danny what you’ve said here are life lessons and not just to do with doing art 😊

I don't do at because I tell myself it sucks and I'm not worthy of calling myself an artist. My inner critic tells me I draw like a 4 year old 😢

Благодарю Вас! Вы делаете очень полезное дело для всех художников, которые находятся в стадии "семечка" и не проросли ещё в чудесное растение
Я очень рад, что это было полезно. Надеюсь, что вы вырастете высокими и сильными!
