This is one of my favorite topics! What I love so much about looking at other people’s sketchbooks isn’t so much their drawing skills, it’s the layout I love. I’m not very skilled yet at good sketchbook page design but I’m really, really enthusiastic about learning and trying and getting better at it. Thanks for these ideas and examples. Oh, and I’d love a video on typography!
Excellent educational video. I latched onto phrase: a sketchbook is its own art form. I wrote that down for further exploration in my journal. I've been journaling for 50 years but late to the painting party at the age of 75 years. Was working towards a certificate in cartooning and illustration when Covid restrictions shut down my college; shut down my life, really. But now I'm back to learning art from RUclips videos. My art will never be sold nor appear in any gallery. It's for me and my pleasure, not others. Really enjoy your channel, Danny. Greetings from Toronto, Ontario 🇨🇦
I started making little squares and rectangles loosely on a sketchbook page before I started drawing. This was very useful for very fast sketching eg from a bus window on a trip. It also helped when I wanted to sit and do thumbnails of landscapes rather than having random things scattered on the page . It definitely looked mire intentional😊
That was the most useful mini class. I have been a graphic designer and now draw and paint. But never put the two together. Your examples really opened up a lot of possibilities. Thank you.❤
Hi Danny, this is one of my favorite Sketchbook Skool videos. I was thinking, “I could fill a whole sketchbook just taking notes from this video.” Then I was thinking, “Danny could write a whole book just using the transcript from this video.”
This is very helpful. I appreciate this. I make my pages in a random way and sometimes appear disconnected . This gives me some great ideas. I like the nesting idea and callouts. 😊
i've started journaling in my sketchbooks lately. It makes it feel more lively. I used to think they are only for drawing, but i love it now that it has stories on every page
This video made me subscribe. That is precisely what I've been looking for to show my students examples outside of just illustrations. I also love the fact you did the text shortcuts.
..I've been doing sketchbooks for quite a few yrs..started when I traveled alot but now it's my only form of art..can you tell us what brand sketchbooks you generally use..probably you change brands over time but just suggestions..etc
What a wonderful and useful video!! One of my favourites already. I'm looking at an encyclopedia about the solar system now and the design of every page is great, lots of inspiration there! Thank you, Danny!
Great video! I’ve been getting bored with sketch-booking recently, maybe this design aspect is the remedy! This video also made me think of one of my favorite artists, Paul Madonna. He became famous (at least in San Francisco) for doing the series “All Over Coffee” where he would sketch a scene somewhere in SF and then add some text, a headline, a paragraph, or a dialog. His book “Everything is its own Reward’ is a great compilation of these images. I’ve been wondering for years why I liked his work so much. His drawing is definitely masterful, but it just occurred to me that part of what I’m responding to is the design element of the text in his work, which is missing these days from most of my notebooks these days.
I have been using the ‘box’ and ‘text-wrapping ‘ideas from your videos or a visual journal since last July, and I love it. It challenges me to improve my techniques (perspective, color theory, etc.) and keeps me interested in keeping a journal in the first place.
Great topic! I have already filled quite a few sketchbooks but I realize now how design and writing can give context and meaning to what seem like random sketches. I would love it if you could do a video about the writing part, as I feel that I’m really lacking in that area. At most, I usually add the date and a short caption to the page. Thanks Danny for what you do!
I have missed you Danny! I’ve been so busy with clay projects, but I’m starting to miss drawing and am thinking of going back to Sketchbook Skool! I’ll get warmed up a bit on my Journaling. I’ve had some laughs looking at my books with my granddaughter! ❤❤
This is very cool! Thank you so much for sharing these concepts. New perspectives and ideas for layout are helpful. I don't usually use words in my art but maybe I will try? Great tips
So many good ideas. The last time I attempted something like this was my Weight Watchers journal many years ago. To make listing my food, calories, etc. interesting, I drew my meals and snacks and wrote about the day. My current project sounds a lot more fun!
Aside - I remember when "desktop publishing" was a new thing. And the first practical Macintosh, and a home printer. Seemed like The Future! THIS video harkens back to that, i.e. you FIRST have to think about page layout. Then fill the blocks with something, that's second.
Womderful! So inspiring . Love watching your videos, especially on the design ideas. Yes, pleeeeease do a video on fonts amd lettering etc. and integrating that into the page design. Thank you for all you do! Happy New Year!
Are you kidding me?? your drawings are awesome!!!! they might not be in a museum but I love your style so much. I wish so bad I could draw like you do 😍
I create playlists on certain topics. I'll save this video into one of those. Merely "liking" a video is like putting it into the miscellaneous drawer where you'll never find it again
I love the design of your sketchbooks... Definitely something I want to work on. And please do a typography video! My writing always looks rubbish in my sketchbook 😂
I love this! Idk why more content creators don't cover this topic more. Great idea. I just got a new leda art supply sketchbook. The paper is thin (still takes a light wash) and I'm looking for new ways to make my pages interesting since I can't do super detailed watercolor paintings. I'm trying to use more colored pencils, and it's great for that. (And gouache, acrylic, ink, graphite, etc)
I’m going to try this. I’m going back to school. I’m going to document my travel to school. I took a semester off. I took an Indesign class and I didn’t think about using that concept to drawing in my sketchbook. Thanks 😊
Another great video Danny ☺ Could you please share what medium / colour you used to get the stunningly vibrant blues for the Dahlias at 18:48 and the dog at 18:50
Nesting is definitely more natural way to do my sketching with writing, because usually i focus on "telling" about my day, many drawings, little arrows with "names" and then little texts of thoughts about those moments and drawings. It all happens naturally without any thought and comes up pretty fun to look at afterwards What is your "natural" way of doing your pages? When you don't even think about design but just go with the flow?

😊Yes, I love Danny's lettering.
Same here
Me three!
Me too!
I love that “whatever your not you can still do this” facts!! I love it!!!
So wonderful!!! And yeas, I would love to see a video about sketchbook typography!
Your Voice is Like honey to my ears. ❤
I've had Danny's books for years but have only just found his videos- he has the most lovely, gentle voice..
His voice reminds me of that teacher we all loved in elementary who would read to you in class.
I agree. It makes a big difference to have a pleasant voice for these videos.

"whatever you're not, you can still do it" ☺
The quote “Focus on drawing, not on The Drawing,” did you make that up? I love it. Exactly what I need to do.
I guess so.
What a great lesson. TY, using magazines as inspiration. See you tomorrow for DWM.

Fantastic topic, great video and some many, many ideas to keep us busy. Thanks Danny!
You have become one of my favourite go to artists whenever I need inspiration 😊 thank you for your tips and comforting voice❤
i've started journaling in my sketchbooks lately. It makes it feel more lively. I used to think they are only for drawing, but i love it now that it has stories on every page
This is so helpful! I struggle with interesting layouts in my sketchbook. I can’t wait to try out some of your tips!!!
I'm so happy they will help you!
One of my favorite Sketchbook Skool videos!! I’d love to hear your thoughts on typography and lettering art!

The Tombow Fudenosuke is my favorite brush pen too! 😊
I learn so much from you! Thank you , Danny!!

Great ideas Danny! Thanks. Yes I’m very interested in typography tips. I would love for you to share more in a fun short like this one!!
So many good ideas. The last time I attempted something like this was my Weight Watchers journal many years ago. To make listing my food, calories, etc. interesting, I drew my meals and snacks and wrote about the day. My current project sounds a lot more fun!
I'd love to watch you creating one of your sketches you have in the book. they look like they would be mesmerising to watch. I think they're lovely.

Yessss! So helpful. Thank you

Are you kidding me?? your drawings are awesome!!!! they might not be in a museum but I love your style so much. I wish so bad I could draw like you do 😍
They do sell my books in museum gift shops! 😜
Love this topic...what this video holds should be in a book so we could refer to it over and over again...and maybe learn something!! Thankyou!
I create playlists on certain topics. I'll save this video into one of those. Merely "liking" a video is like putting it into the miscellaneous drawer where you'll never find it again
Thanks this is very helpful. I have started doing a jernal. I'm really enjoying it 😊

Thank you! This was very informative and helpfull.
I love your work❤
Cool mixing graphic design and sktchbooking
I’m interested in whatever you want to teach us about sketching 😊
Another great video Danny ☺ Could you please share what medium / colour you used to get the stunningly vibrant blues for the Dahlias at 18:48 and the dog at 18:50
I’m guessing it’s gouache. Very vibrant and opaque.
The dahlias are gouache. The dogs are de martins liquid watercolors.
Great ideas thanks
Glad i found your channel
Wowww😃💥 Amazing sketchbooks👏🚀🛸🔥💯
Your voice is my ASMR
Great tips this is something I struggle with.
Nesting is definitely more natural way to do my sketching with writing, because usually i focus on "telling" about my day, many drawings, little arrows with "names" and then little texts of thoughts about those moments and drawings. It all happens naturally without any thought and comes up pretty fun to look at afterwards
What is your "natural" way of doing your pages? When you don't even think about design but just go with the flow?
I never had a grandpa. I see him as one ❤
My favourite quote: "Whatever you're NOT, you can do this."
Fantastic video. I really want to work on my typography. Do you have any tips?
Yep, it's like making your own magazine
Each one signature is a drawing!
I love this video; and I'm thinking "this would work with a spiral-bound sketchbook too" Right??? Because that's what I have.
I like your lettering, can you show us some more lettering?
I would love the watch a video about fonts
Wow, what a revelation, a light bulb moment, Yahoo !
Yes…. Lets talk about lettering!
❤❤❤
Question: if you just start to learn how to draw. Do you think you can still create an evenly interesting or beautiful or ... sketchbook?
Of course. I started to draw in a sketchbook.
❤
😊😍🙏😍😊
I didn’t know that was called the gutter😂
Bom..
I can’t handle watercolor 😢and every time I try to draw something with it, it turns out frustrating. I’m losing faith now😭Can you give me some advice?
Have you tried our course “watercolor rules and how to break them”?

Sorry, beyond my control!
Try going into settings and changing the audio back to original.
No. I really don't like this approach.
Thanks so much for telling me. Bye!
What a great video and ideas!! Thank you ♡
