It’s so true how much deeper the memories are when you sketch. You might not have time to visit as many places, but the memories or still better! I’ve done holiday sketch/journals for my last 2 holidays and plan to keep doing it. I also love to include hand drawn maps of walks I’ve done, with tiny sketches of key points along the journey.
2 weeks ago I went to Paris and took a journal with me. I'm still working in it and it's made the trip last longer in my brain. It's the best souvenir I could have brought home.
I’m now wishing I had captured my travels in journals more than in photos, but I now have something more to look forward to in future travels thanks to your inspiring video. I’m an art teacher with over 30 years experience in the private sector and I must tell you that you’re an excellent teacher, Danny. Thank you!
I had already left for Italy when you put this on YT. Before I left I had given a lot of thought to what I was going to take. Fortunately, I travelled by train, so I didn't have to worry too much about weight, since it was only a question of what I could carry in my backpack. The weather was poor, so there was a bit of drawing and painting in the hotel room from photographs that I'd taken earlier in the day, but I did a drawing and a watercolour every day. The results aren't great, but they will be a reminder of my holiday in years to come.
These are wonderful tips! I’ve been diagnosed with some pretty serious health issues and am unable to travel for the time being. I will keep fighting to be able to do that again, but because I also do photography, you’ve inspired me to use the photos I’ve taken on my travels to make new art! I’ll pick a picture and imagine that is where I am today, travel there in my mind, and use the art as healing. Thank you for the inspiration! ✨💚✨
@@SketchBookSkool Thank you! It certainly will on one level or another. It will definitely help me learn at the least and grow as a soul. Thank you for the inspiration and kindness!
Your content brings me so much joy and inspiration. I just borrowed all of your books from the library and they are just as amazing as your videos. Thank you.
I brought home my first curated travel sketchbook and it was a joy. As you said, i tried to just enjoy the moment. Not to pressure myself like i do in my everyday illustrator Job practise. I need to challenge myself a Bit more in terms of becomig faster and letting go of my perfections, but this Time was a joy. I can recommend the Fabriano foldable sketchbooks. And i do have a tiny Palette be Schmincke. But this is such a cool Souvenir to take home❤
Pocket notebooks are great for this. I keep one at my desk at work and sketch anything for 5 to 10 minutes. Though, I haven't done it recently. Thanks for the reminder and inspiration.
Thank you for this! On my last two trips, inspired by a Helen Houghton vid, I sketched in mini accordion sketchbooks made out of my ferry ticket and boarding pass😄
I love this idea! I’m flying to England to visit my son next month and I’m very anxious about flying and navigating the busy airport and bus routes. I think concentrating on sketching my experiences will really help take my mind away from my anxiety along the way. I’m going to give it a go and I think it will be a souvenir to be really proud of when I get home. I’m really enjoying your videos. Many thanks 😊
I love my travel sketchbook from Egypt, and reflect on details that are easily overlooked. I learned not to journal with a mechanical pencil as it rubs off easily and blurs. Thanks for sharing your experience and tips, they are priceless! ✍️🙏🙌
I agree with all of the following! But…Moleskin paper quality has declined over past years. For mixed media I’d recommend Stillman &Birn hard cover pocket. For 100% cotton watercolor , I’d suggest Hanhemule’s hardcover pocket sketchbook. I do have a couple different kinds of stools. But I most often use Liz Steel’s method…I carry and sit on a large plastic bag. So much lighter and compact than a stool. Learned the hard way: kit bag should be waterproof. Timbuk2 is a large initial investment but good value.
I sat down in the grass by a hiking track to draw. One after the other came jogging by and offered me help: thinking I fell and couldn’t get up, had an accident, or suddenly becoming unwell… I now got one of those fishing gear backpacks with chair.
Just got back from an amazing trip visiting grand Teton Yellowstone Colorado and arches - I am definitely going to make a travel journal based on my trip 😊
In addition to email contact info in my sketchbooks, I also put a short note about how valuable the memories are to me and that there's a "reward" for returning it. I've never lost one (yet!) but I think if you can "connect" with the finder in an authentic way (and offer a reward), they'd be more likely to contact me to return it.
Write about your experiences and try collaging ephemera to start! And, we believe anyone can learn to draw - it just takes slowing way down and really observing - practice is all you need. Start small and just see how great it feels!

Great advice Danny. I’m just about to embark on a journey to Nigeria.

Sounds great! Next time try it while you're traveling!

Danny! I love your vids.. (showing my age there).. do you do classes? I need to get my art mojo back..
For what it's worth, I can't tell what age you are but I would love classes too! :D ❤
Of course! I teach at sketchbookskool.com/. Visit our site. And I also teach here on RUclips.
Hi! I would love to see your ISRAEL sketchbook! Please consider sharing it in a future video :-)
Sure thing!
I never go anywhere considered travel, rarely even leave my neighborhood area.
It’s great to practice on familiar ground.
Nice video ❤❤❤❤❤
Merci 🖌️🖌️🖌️
I’ve had the fountain pen incident on a plane
So what is the benefit of learning drawing? 😊
Are you kidding? Watch this: ruclips.net/video/fR07wJJIBwI/видео.html
The problem I have is the writing next to my work isn’t very good x
Your writing? Or your lettering?
👍
👌
What if you can’t draw

Honestly...I'm not inspired...pencil or charcoal is good enough for me. But each to his own
Your kit would be easier to travel with for sure!
Fountain pens and Poscas! Not safe for planes!!!!! Planes ✈️
Indeed!
