"with linear continuity"... it only counts when it was planned beforehand. The Quantum (which was the modern Spectre analogue) storyline was supposed to be a trilogy but apparently ended at QoS, after killing two losers in a desert. Skyfall was amazing and actually gave us some unique introductions (Moneypenny, Q, Mallory) and farewells (M and the DB5), but was a standalone. In Spectre, they pretend unconvincingly that Blofeld and Spectre were over-arching everything that happened in the first 3 movies. Bond actually blows up Spectre and captures his leader in the 4th film, but the invisible organisation still exists in the 5th movie, implying to be a threat, until they are all killed in a few seconds by a underwhelming villain, who ironically loses its main goal halfway through film, until at the very end of the film he suddenly has a new plan. Absolutely nothing was planned for continuity, except for (1) QoS being a sequel to Casino Royale and (2) some characters that are borrowed from previous films (but that also happened in the older movies).
Why does it only have to be planned beforehand? I know it’s a little messy but the general storyline still works. And yes there’s plot holes and some unnecessary elements of the story (and Safin who doesn’t make any sense) but loads of bond films have plot holes and questionable villain motives. And I’d rather have a full story with a few small issues than no continuity at all. In almost every other aspect the Craig films are the absolute best in the franchise.
I am a Sean Connery fan. He is the man, a great Scot. Casino Royale was a very good comedy. Time for a new James Bond, with Sean's spirit and roots to expose more of the tech baron oligarchs smashing so much.
Fantastic work. All actors who have played bond have all done brilliantly in their unique portrayals. Pierce Bronson and Daniel Craig brought nuance to bond like many before them while also being respectful and bringing new life for what Sean Connery started. James Bond is iconic and will continue to be around due to popularity and engaging storytelling given the right person who is both a fan and is dedicated and eager to bring in both new and old audience with their own version.
I agree but they did not mention Roger Lazenby, who played 007 in "Her Majesty's secret service." I read that he was difficult to work with but even if that was true I still think he deserved a mention.
Not EON production too, and not really a film, but the first portrayal of Bond (american agent Jimmy Bond though, and Felix Leiter was british, and Vesper was combined with Mathis in a single female character, but otherwise pretty faithful to the book) was by Barry Nelson in Casino Royale (1954).
The role was created for Roger Moore. He was however already contracted to play the , Saint and not allowed to play a spy type character for competitors. Moore was actually a commando, and MI captain who's Real life story wD reminiscent of the Bond character.
Actor Barry Nelson was technically the very first James Bond! He had acted in a two part TV serial of Ian Fleming's 'Casino Royale' long before Sean Connery had uttered 'The name's Bond. James Bond' in 'Dr No'!
Bob Holness (famous in the UK for hosting a quiz show called Blockbusters) was the second actor to portray James Bond, starring in a 1957 South African radio dramatization of 'Moonraker'.
I think the biggest evolution was backwards. In the books, Bond has relationships with the women and they tend to drop him or leave him but he really cares for them. The books are sequential and the relationships are tied together. In the first movies, Bond is just about getting laid, either just because they are there (and eye-candy) or because the women help him somehow. By Craig, we are back to Bond in love, first with Vesper then with Madeleine. I wouldn't argue that the Bond Girls evolve dramatically, but there are one of each in "Licence to Kill". In all of the later films the women are smart, powerful, and eye-candy! But it is Bond that evolves. (Can't blame Moore for the awful middle movies. He is too old to be credible for anything (action or women) and the scripts were atrocious.) HMSS is a complete outlier.
I loved and love the old Bond movies. I first struggled with Daniel Craig a lot, but started to appreciate this era with every movie more and more. They are different and great, too. You have the whole spect...rum....
@@veniceferguson4760 totally agree, Venice. Daniel Craig is the worst Bond ever. He has destroyed the whole franchise. Awful, awful casting right from his first outing. Let's face it, they all stink.
Connery was classic Bond. There is no better. Brosnan did an amazing job bridging a classic Bond and modern Bond. Craig made a good Bond but it turned into James Bourne REALLY quick. Really good movies but I missed the humor. I've seen the other Bonds A LOT over the years but i've only rewatched Graigs modern Bond twice. GOOD movies. Just no urge to see them again. I REALLY WANT TO SEE A RETURN TO OVER THE TOP BOND. I want the gadgets. The outrageous bad guy and girl names. The quips and double entendres never failed to bust me up. I'd even be up for a full remake or two. Moonraker would be interesting with today's tech, CGI and updated take on the plot..
I would say he only turned into that during QOS. Which was obviously a disaster. Coming back to Skyfall, Craig gave us the rawest version of Bond built back up. It was a delight.
You didn't cover the little side note of how Connery came back after a 12 year hiatus to play Bond in a non-Eon produced movie, which was also towards the end of Roger Moore's stint (Moore had already been in 5 Bond movies when Connery did his final Bond movie in 1983).
The Dalton movies are two of my favorites. If you’ve bought into the idea they are bad and have never watched them, you will be pleasantly surprised if you give them a try. Especially the second one.
I read where the producers had originally intended to make OHMSS in 1969 an Avengers of Spies, with all the famous secret agents from The Man From UNCLE, The Avengers and Mission: Impossible uniting with 007 to take on Blofeld and SPECTRE. Glad the idea was 86'd.
In skyfall, M is the Bond girl. Makes the film. Also watch Hell Drivers for some excellent pre bond Connery, a film with Herbert Lom, Stanley baker, Patrick mcGoohan , sid james, david mccallum, gordon Jackson and a doctor who in the cast.
Not the best movies plot wise but definitly the best Bond. Charming yet a stone cold killer and some of the best action squences in the Bond franchise.
After watching the grittier and more athletic and tough Daniel Craig, poor Pierce Brosnan doesn't look like a stone cold killer who could kill with his bare hands if necessary.
Small correction: Sean Connery was first actor to play Bond onthe movie screen. Barry Nelson was the first actor to play Bond on any screen. He played Bond in a color TV production of “ Casino Royals” in 1954. It was lost and forgotten until two black and white kinescopes of it were discovered in 1980.
Interesting to note, The first Bond, Barry Nelson, was an American with an American accent. The famous actor, Peter Lorre played le Chifre. Lorre always played bad guys. It was a 1 hour long teleplay.
The only point of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was to prove that Bond was wrong to ever get married. He avoided close relationships because he didn't want to leave a widow behind. OHMSS revealed the flip side of the problem. His lovers or wives could easily become collateral damage or targets for revenge.
It's true that The Living Daylights was a return to a more serious Bond, but no quips? What about "He got the boot..." after killing a man by cutting his own bootlaces? Nonetheless this video overall was an entertaining history.
James Bond is a character in an Agatha Christie novel. I thought it was commonly known, so I didn't note which one. (I read them all a few summers ago) I beleive it was one of the few with the husband and wife team.
Everyone of the actors who has played James Bond brought their own unique, valuable, and important nuances to the character. But let us recognize that only Sean Connery brought the brutish, thuggish side of the Bond role to life in his portrayals. Daniel Craig did address this aspect of Bond, but he did so courtesy of the script which fleshed out Bond's beginning from thug to secret agent. Bond fans enjoy Bond's sophisticated demeanor, but many still do not truly appreciate the cold, hard core of a warrior entrusted with terminating bad guys, thwarting evil nations, and blocking the nefarious ambitions of bad actors (no pun intended) to protect civilization and allow the unsuspecting to blissfully sleep through the night.
I love Lazenby's Bond intro/walkout. He does that really cool drop to his knee after he turns, then shoots. Wish it was included in the beginning of this vid. Oh well lol
Daniel Craig the worse Bond EVER in my opinion. Frankenstein Forehead. Shrek Face. Just awfully miscast. Almost put me off the franchise forever, to be honest. I fear for the whole future of the Bond series after him. Could anyone be worse in the role?
0:30 Roger would order anything other than vodka martini in order to separate himself from Connery. This was the only time his Bond drank it, only on the condition that she said the words
Love seeing how Bond continues to evolve! With technology advancing so fast, it’s exciting to imagine how AI could even play a role in bringing characters like Bond to life. We recently created an AI take on Bond, and it’s amazing how close it feels to the real thing. Anyone else think AI could be a part of Bond's future
It is partly due to they changing the title of the movie. It was originally going to be called Licence Revoked, but during the advertising for it, the name was changed.
Try and watch the films without constantly comparing back to the old ones. Craig innovates and reinvents bond and there’s nothing wrong with that. I think he plays it better than anyone else and his films are the best in the franchise.
From worst to best my order would be, George Lazenby, Daniel Craig, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, Rodger Moore and Sean Connery. Moore brought a bit of comedy to the role and no Matter what ever happened to Connery he always got the girls.🇦🇺
you see the db5 in mission impossible rogue nation, in which the palace they go to if you look around the parking lot, you can spot a asthin martin db5, so that means either bond was on a mission there, the palace in which the opera was playing, or was taking a break a little vacay. Beware folks. There was a press release about how Bond is going to be "modernized". Few details were given, but the impression is that Bond is going to be enduring great changes to his character.
@@scottdoesntmatter4409 I wouldn't bother "modernising" him at all. I would just take Bond back to the 1950s 60s and 70s, and make more of the movies in those eras. If you have read recent novels written by authors other than Fleming, those are the decades in which they are set Just a suggestion...

SEAN ...IS AND WAS THE BEST BOND EVER!!!!...CAVIL MUST BE THE NEXT BOND!! HE HAS THE LOOKS / BODY...AND HE IS ENGLISH!!
#1 Sean, Pierce and Roger in That Order.
what about the other two? and are all number 1?
Sean, Daniel, and Timothy for me.
1:00 excuse me he plays flanigan in "the longest day" he then flew out and filmed "dr no" right after they wrapped.
I don’t know if that’s the “only point” of the movie, it’s bloody brilliant
The Bond movie that surprised me the most was On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and if you seen it you know why =) George Lazenby did a good job too.
It's a favourite of Christopher Nolan
I call Craig the scary Bond. My faves are Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton
I agree with Brosnan and Moore
Yea, Moore was great!
James Bond is Amazing
It's true that The Living Daylights was a return to a more serious Bond, but no quips? What about "He got the boot..." after killing a man by cutting his own bootlaces? Nonetheless this video overall was an entertaining history.
Even in the opening, "make it two"
I think he was talking about the PTS only, but he does say in that better make that two.
A favorite gag was burning the villain with a cigarette lighter by Dalton .
@@Awestefeld6612 A lighter given to him by his friend Felix Leighter
I don't think Dalton was to happy about the quips. They say the ones in TLD was the writers being too used writing for Moore.
Solid video, really liked the Format 👍
James Bond is a character in an Agatha Christie novel. I thought it was commonly known, so I didn't note which one. (I read them all a few summers ago) I beleive it was one of the few with the husband and wife team.
Sean Connery was James Bond. Everyone else only played James Bond.
Oh well lol
Actually, there was a TV special of Casino Royale starring Barry Nelson which aired eight years before the release of Dr No.
Correct. Jimmy Bond.
Very creative I can admit it's obviously an old series but still popular across the pond
Daniel Craig is actually the longest James Bond actor for 15 years
Moore is the longest,
7 Bond fliks"
@@glenn7152 Moore is in more Bond films than Craig but was only bond for 12 years and Craig was bond for 15 years
Daniel Craig the worse Bond EVER in my opinion.
Dalton's bond seems to be the perfect blend of the versions that came before and after him imo.
He was so good but underappreciated at the time
He is my fav.
Couldn't stand him. Looked like he thought he was in a stage play. He was awesome in Flash Gordon where the camp worked to his advantage.
Not for me
Love seeing how Bond continues to evolve! With technology advancing so fast, it’s exciting to imagine how AI could even play a role in bringing characters like Bond to life. We recently created an AI take on Bond, and it’s amazing how close it feels to the real thing. Anyone else think AI could be a part of Bond's future
License To Kill is also the only Bond movie to receive a 15 (roughly equivalent to a US R) rating in the UK.
It is partly due to they changing the title of the movie. It was originally going to be called Licence Revoked, but during the advertising for it, the name was changed.
@@oyvi00i Because they thought Americans wouldn't get it.
What a fun watch. Thanks.
Craig is not Bond he never was Bond. He destroyed this iconic character beyond repair...
Try and watch the films without constantly comparing back to the old ones. Craig innovates and reinvents bond and there’s nothing wrong with that. I think he plays it better than anyone else and his films are the best in the franchise.
This video is great, but "Blitzerverse" 🤣😂🤣 ... was AWESOME
Timothy dalton is my favorite bond. Rugged and ruthless, less suave
you see the db5 in mission impossible rogue nation, in which the palace they go to if you look around the parking lot, you can spot a asthin martin db5, so that means either bond was on a mission there, the palace in which the opera was playing, or was taking a break a little vacay. Wonderfully written, and said, well done gilbert who looks like dominic greene a little bit, but the craig films didnt find its own identity and the films were all over the place.
CAN NOT STAND CRAIG. I don't find him attractive, sexy, capable of any quip nor likable. So very happy he is gone! 007 movies are awesome and my favorite of all films. I surely do not understand what Barbara finds sexy about Craig. What a loser.
Damn. Never noticed that.
We're MISSING One Bond!
Personally my favorite is Roger Moore ... BTW i have just watch all 6 seasons of The Saint with Roger Moore ( Before He Was Bond ) and he`s great !
Complete agreement with you. Moore was, in many ways, more realistic. Connery a close second.
For some reason I really Likes Connery’s little eyebrow raise at Honey Rider
Great job 🙌🏻
Timothy Dalton is underrated and underestimated
Missing from the sequence of Bonds at the beginning was George Lazenby. Admittedly he only did one movie but it /was/ an official one.
I just loved Darby O'Gill & The Little People!! Good research job!
Beware folks. There was a press release about how Bond is going to be "modernized". Few details were given, but the impression is that Bond is going to be enduring great changes to his character.
"modernized" like Dr Who which was a total failure
Like dying?
@@jjryan1352 "modernized for today's audiences", which is usually a bad sign.
@@scottdoesntmatter4409 I wouldn't bother "modernising" him at all. I would just take Bond back to the 1950s 60s and 70s, and make more of the movies in those eras.
If you have read recent novels written by authors other than Fleming, those are the decades in which they are set
Just a suggestion...
My ranking from worst to best
6:- Roger Moore
5:- geogre lazenby
4:- Daniel craig
3:- Pierce brosnan
2:- Timothy Dalton
1:- Sean Connery
If the next bond is Henry Cavill or Tom Hardy, then Iam in for next bond films!
Rms queen Elizabeth was not a freighter she was a luxury ocean liner
Stanley Baker was a candidate to portray James Bond but never got the chance
Amazing eyebrows he had a poor man version of Sean connery
