    So I'd bulk buy bath and body stuff, I took an inventory in 2016 and decided like yourself only replace what I've used. 2019 and I'm still working through my backlog!!! I have a huge trunk, and I can gladly say it's less than half now! I'm hoping this year I can get rid of the trunk!

      I know it's 2023 and YEARS since you commented this but I'm the same. I actually now only buy Sol de Janeiro creams and sprays. I have a long backlog of bath and body works to get through, but the thing is at least they weren't $30-$60+ a piece like some body stuff can be.

    Do video in which you explain if ALL of your makeup disappeared suddenly and you had only $200 to replace them (or $300 or $500... a finite amount to build an entire collection from zero basically) which products you would choose to buy!

    I just subscribed to this channel because Im in school and dont have a lot of money to spend on skincare/makeup right now. I've been looking for youtube channels that aren't centered around consumerism and acquiring as much stuff as possible. You are an encouragement to me to just buy what I absolutely love or need and that spending more on my appearance doesn't make me any better of a person. Thank you!

    Mark 5:09--One thing that resonates with me as I chronicle my no-buy is that I have made too many decisions for my future and now need to take a step back. I have a decade worth of eyeshadows which is obscencely fickle-minded about my time/resources and a poor application of "future planning." I wait with bated breath to be able to buy something new that responses to who I am currently and what my needs are currently. I don't want to keep reaching into my future like, not for cosmetics at the very least.

    Honestly, my question is not “who do you think you are buying a 33.00 body wash” but rather, “who do these companies think THEY are” charging 33.00 for a scented liquid soap? The cost to formulate a 33 dollar liquid soap is the same as formulating a 2 dollar soap basically. we all assume the difference is quality but it is not.
    It’s interesting, We are living in a time in history where we watch rich people buy or sell products and we think it makes sense for someone earning 40 grand a year to spend on beauty and body care what multi millionaires spend. for example 33 dollars is like shopping at the dollar store for a multi millionaire, but for us we have to work a few hours just to earn enough for a bottle of soap for example. Personally I am trying to think about this when I buy products. Love your videos 💕

    What I noticed from my daily routine is I don’t need to feel “fancy” all the time. Instead of purchasing luxury body wash all the time, I alternate between a regular body wash and a travel-size luxury body wash. It has significantly reduced my expenses and I enjoy it equally if not more than when I use exclusively lux products.

    I so relate to this. I have too much. I try too much, but once I find “the one” I stop trying other things in that category. The problem is when I have, say, a foundation that is just “OK” and I am still looking for one that I actually like. Ugh. Thanks for the inspiration to just USE IT UP.

    I moved recently, and I finally got the idea to put all my bottles in a closet, except the one I'm using all the way until it's empty.
    This has relieved me of so much clutter while I use what I have, and don't buy any more of those types of products.

    Totally agree that this part is the easiest to change of my habits. I still always have two of body wash or shampoo at home though, because when the one I'm using is empty, I don't want to rush to get a new one to replace it, which happened couple times before. so it's good to have a backup as long as you don't open that one lol

  • @MyCrownstar

    I know you are referring to bath and body care in this video, but I have to tell you, you've changed need to buy stuff. For example, I have a LOT of candles that I am burning through....My candle lighter apparently died because it wouldn't flick fire anymore....my initial thought was I need to go buy another lighter or get another oil cartridge (not sure what they are called)...then a light bulb moment went off....why are you trying to buy something, you have boxes and boxes of matches in the house with your emergency candles (live in FL)… I have more than enough matches (probably too many) to get me through any type of hurricane situation....AFTER I've used a sufficient quantity, THEN I 'll determine what to do next....but in the meantime, I don't need to purchase anything.

  • @SkyNessa321
    @SkyNessa321 5 лет назад +3

    It's such a satisfying feeling when your routine consists of a few products you chose for the quality rather than a large quantity of products with varying degrees of quality! I'm a creature of habit, so I've never dealt with this obsession with trying new things all the time that pervades the beauty industry. I find something I like, and then I repurchase it until I get sick of it, use up the last one, and am ready to commit to something new when it's time to replace a product. Hearing about your experiences with that mindset are so fascinating to me! I also find it interesting that the feeling of having a backup seems to taint the experiences you have with your products even in your new mindset. I don't buy backups often, but when there's a great sale (like BOGO for something I was already there to buy) or I'm gifted something I know I love, it makes me excited to know that when I burn through a product I have, I've got a fresh one in my bathroom cabinet just waiting to join the shelf in my shower. I always get excited that I can take the money I would have spent on that and put it toward something else.

    Personal care a la body wash, body lotion, bath bombs, etc. was one of my biggest over indulgences pre-RONB. I had 26 lotions. TWENTY SIX! 2 had gone bad, and I used the rest all the way down to my current collection of 5. I just used the last of my body washes right before my current trip so I got to buy a new one for the trip. It was exactly as you said..... SO exciting and indulgent. On top of that I have a new found appreciation for the sheer amount of SPACE that I’ve allowed to be freed in my home after being at my in-laws. They are hoarders with money, so they own dozens of dressers, hutches, vanities, tables, etc. that are loaded with STUFF! Being around that makes me miss all of the space that Ive so carefully curated. Thanks for sharing HLP and I cant wait to see your January budget recap I’m curious to know what you bought this month

    You are wise beyond your years; if only I'd figured these concepts out when I was younger! It's always been such thrill in getting a new "thing" (yet always followed with regret) and with your help, I'm now excited about not buying and enjoying what I own and de-cluttering a ton. I just hope to pass these ideas onto my children, who are a little caught off guard at my slow fashion/no buy ways that I've recently adopted. It's never too late to start.

    I started a beauty based instagram in 2017, being a stay at home mom I dived into getting free samples & makeup to try and picture. For the first time in ages I didn’t have anything to test and I was so relieved! My curly hair has been dried out and damaged by testing all these products, my face has broken out countless times. This video really spoke to me, I feel more taken care of and luxurious when I use only the items I want to use. Fewer things can give us that fancy feeling we seek! Thank you so much for your well thought out video content, truly appreciated!!

    Body and hair care products and skin care are probably the only category where I don't really have a problem. I only have one of each product. I don't have a lot of space in out small bathroom to store unnecessary self care products, also I have never found shower gel to be something exiting. I wish I could adapt this less is more way of thinking to other aspects of my life too, especially to my closet and makeup collection. They are so cluttered and having all these beautiful things only makes me sad when I don't have time to use all of them. I'm in the first month of my no buy year and it makes me so relieved to know that I won't be bringing in anymore stuff to my life for the next year. Thank you for being an example that it's really possible to do a no buy and change your habits! You truly inspire me!

    I don't think I'd be happy limiting myself to just one, but 2 is a solid number for me. I'm on a sorta unofficial No-Buy right now. I've never been a compulsive shopper, but I've been an impulsive shopper, and I've spent the past 2 days taking complete stock of all of my skincare/body/bath/hair/makeup/etc, and my goal is to have 1-2 of everything. For shampoo, I dye my hair blue, and I use special shampoo after I dye it, but only for the first 3 weeks or so, so I've had a bottle for the last year or so (I only dye my hair like 3 times a year) and I don't mind having my one shampoo, and that shampoo. With things like lotion and body wash, I like to have a morning scent, and a night scent. I love orange ginger Energy from bath and body works, but it's too energizing for bedtime, and I love my lavender products, but they make me sleepy. I have more than just that now, but my goal is to pair down to 1-2 in all those catagories, and if I have 2, it's going to be because of a morning, and evening scent.

    I do find with the one product, but the best product approach there really is a very real sense of luxury. Not only the look which is tidy and sort of classy, but the feeling of being free of scarcity. A sort of, "I'll buy another if/when I need another, I don't need to hoard them I want for nothing." It's almost a statement of self confidence that you are sure of your ability to acquire a new, amazing product when that time comes and so you don't need to worry about it in the meantime.

    Your channel has seriously become one of my absolute favorites I have always had a little bit of an issue with shopping for the instant gratification, but in the last 18 months or so its been much worse(a major loss in my personal life seems to have to sort of triggered it). I had been starting to pay attention to some budgeting type channels because I was well aware that I had to do something but I was still having a hard time making myself actually do something about it. Then I think I "found" you about a month ago, and pretty immediately decided to do a no buy for January, and as the month comes to a close I am getting ready to seriously reevaluate my budget for the rest of the year. I really just want to thank you for being the push I needed to take control where I had lost it, before I managed to cause any lasting damage financially.

    I know its common knowledge and habit to some, to just buy what they actually need because they are completely out. But I think a bigger percentage do actually buy it knowing they don't need it at that given moment. I wonder how things would look in advertising and the retail market if everyone just bought what they needed. With just focusing on makeup alone, I always had more than I needed but they were so different from each other (example- Lipsticks) that I still find it acceptable. My theory is when social media influencers came around, many makeup collections with diverse makeup options began to become less diverse and more excessive. Consumer Psychology runs deep...

    Another very interesting video Hannah.
    I am at the start of a no buy year and I have found myself wondering what the end state might look like for me - a position I could be happy with.
    For some product types I could absolutely see me being happy with one in usage and no back-up until it's almost run out. Something like footcream for example, which isn't very exciting. Or body scrub where I found my holy grail product some years ago and don't buy anything else (It's the REN salt scrub).
    However perfume is something I adore, and though I want to reduce the size of my collection, I don't ever want to restrict myself to just one - I like different types for different times of year, different occasions, even different moods. I also love having a body lotion which coordinates with my perfume. Not necessarily matches - most perfumes I love don't have matching lotion - but something that works with it. So vanilla body lotion to go with a perfume that has vanilla notes in and so forth. So I can't quite picture me ever having just one body lotion, even though the sensible side of me says I could make do with one unscented one.
    However, I definitely want to get to the stage of at least knowing all the products I have and wanting to use them. Shamefully, at the moment I couldn't even tell you how many pots and tubes of body lotion I have and what they are. I do know I have some old ones in scents that I don't really like but can't quite bring myself to throw out either as there isn't anything fundamentally wrong with them. Will feel good to shift those out of my collection during the no buy.

    I get it. But maybe is because I’m in my 1 month and a half of my no buy, but I would’ve gotten the body wash, I don’t know where this road will take me but I don’t mind having 2 things like body wash at once. I love having two scents for dates and on the daily for a few things. 🙌🏻 So I’m asking myself is it ok if I feel happy having 2 things ? Or do I only have to have one to feel successful ! And my answer is I don’t mind it, as long as I am not spending money that I don’t have I’m happy. 😊 ... but like I said maybe later I’ll feel different IT.IS.A.PROCESS.

    This is where I'm getting to and partly what made me start a no buy year in 2019, I have a ton of bar soaps (they're my weakness) that I want to use and I've found two lotions I love but now have all these other ones sitting in my closet not being used because they're nowhere near as good.

    Without meaning to I whittled my soap collection down to 1 last year as well. I recently bought an additional small body wash (from Lush incidentally) for when I need to shower before bed. I dislike showering at night but sometimes need to and having something special to use that helps me relax. I would still rather shower in the morning, but showering at night occasionally is no longer quite as awful.

    I've never had a problem with buying too much shampoo or other hair care products, but body wash and lotion is another story! Bath & Body Works is my weakness, and with the way their sales are I tend to stock up and buy quite a few things at once when I go there. They also discontinue scents pretty often, so when I find one I like I feel the need to buy backups of it. I don't spend exorbitant amounts of money there very often, but still I have a large drawer in my bathroom full to the brim with bottles of lotion, body wash, hand soap, hand sanitizer and body spray! Not to mention all the candles in the other rooms... I also tend to get their products as gifts a lot, so that doesn't help. I do use up these things eventually (well, not so much the body spray...), but I know I have bottles of lotion in there that I bought 2 and a half years ago. I tend to see what I need to stock up on every time they have a sale, but maybe I should focus on just working through everything that I have this year!

    I WISH I had the problem of too many bath/body/household products around, it sounds absolutely lovely lol. With 6 people in the house, I just can't keep up with everyone and we are always low or out of something or everything, and I'm really not a big pleasure shopper. (Of course I know these are different issues and I'm not being serious, but my opposite end of the problem is actually stress in my life.) Much love as always! 😙

      Really the main reason though I think why I don't shop a ton and have a large backstocks is simply because I don't have time. I work alot of hours and I have my house and family, but mostly I just work. 😜

    I get you on skipping out on the Sol de Janeiro bath cream. I bought mine in the summer of 2017 and am babying it because I love that scent. I use it as a final wash in my bath care...just so I don't run out because I know I'm not buying another one. I have enough half bars of soap to finish.

    I have been on a " No Buy" since last August when I discovered your channel. I just read Robert Lustig's book, "Hacking the American Mind" and got a lot out of it. I have decided to have a Beauty Budget, too. But in the spirit of not searching for that elusive product that is going to change my life, I have compiled a list of Holy Grail products. Over the next year, I can only buy from my list. I think that will free up a lot of time and energy that I spend researching and shopping.

    great video as always hannah! saw this from another comment here and think it will be a neat idea to do a video on what you would shop for a new make up/skin care/body care stash on a $100-200 budget each. i know you have mentioned your favourite products here and there but a video touching on each category of items will be informative.
    also wondering if as part of ethical consumerism, would you be inclined to use more environmetally friendly products? bar soaps instead of plastic bottled shower gels, reusable cotton pads instead of disposable ones, menstrual cups/reusable pads instead of tampons/pads, etc?

    I have to say that while I see the point of minimalising how many products you have, I will buy another product if I already have one and if it’s on sale. I don’t see the price of paying full price when you can organize yourself, have some self-control and buy what you need a few times a year. This will also cut down on transportation costs, packing, and if you buy enough to last six months, you’ll usually get free shipping.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  5 лет назад +1

      I think it's a matter of opinion and lifestyle! I don't like having backups in my space, I would rather pay a few dollars more at the time I need something than have extra stuff in my closet. But it's all about what makes YOU happy and if you know yourself and you are doing what you love, that's perfect!

    I often have 1 shampoo in use, and 1 in back-up. I buy a new shampoo when I start using my back-up (or I forget and I buy one when the old one runs low). But I have so much body soap, I recently got some from my mom and from a give away, I don't have to (and am not going to) buy soap for at least a year

      @@HannahLouisePoston yeah definitely! February here I come. I was going to start over earlier, but then something really personally earth shattering happened, and just felt like there was no point to anything. And then as I've slowly been finding my footing Ive noticed that my tendency to buy things recovered faster than the part of me that wants to get this under control. So though last year (thru a low buy/thoughtful decluttering) I got my makeup and skincare spending under control (as much as the many many things I still have at home can be considered under control) clothes still aren't there... Probably because I have had health troubles and because of that it's been tricky for me to figure out my wardrobe, and the identity I'm comfortable with projecting to the world. I feel like I'm using clothes shopping in a way to explore and develop a new identity that I can live with in this new life I'm navigating. Flawed logic, but emotionally it seems like it fills a void. Anyways. February here I come, with a budget, and whole new plan for accountability... I have an Instagram account where I try a more minimalist approach to life. Going forward, I'm going to list all the things that I've bought on my Instagram. Embarrassing or not it will force me to come face to face with my spending... Inspired by your JAnuary spending breakdown video 💕 :)

      I just watched that video today! I'm casually rewatching some older videos to see how much her mindset has changed, and that particular body wash struck me! She said in the older video that after running out of body washes, she would consider repurchasing the Rio one despite all the negatives (price, packaging, etc). I got so excited when she said in this video that she wouldn't even accept that in PR! Such a huge change in mindset from the beginning of her journey!

    I know you have been doing KM (KonMarie) and have wondered if you have followed her instruction of removing visual clutter in your shower by removing labels or decanting things into a dispenser or have any plans to do so now that you can buy things to help you accomplish this? This was actually one of the first things I did in my bathroom! I bought a 4 pump dispenser for the wall (one holds shampoo, conditioner, and 2 bodywashes (one's my husbands, I too only use one at a time). It even sparked joy for my husband! I used to have a thing for packaging too, and took a strange sort of pride in the luxurious products on my tub edge, but now I feel more bougie having something dedicated to dispensing them instead because my shower looks so much more streamlined. Something to think about anyway. I'll link the dispenser if you or anyone else is interested (not affiliated/sponsored/owner; just love product!) amzn.to/2HxTShq

    I've got lots of shower and hair products (some do double duty) and body moisturisers. I think they'll last me longer than the year so I'll just keep using them up. Minimalism in this category is a long way off for me, but I'll get there in the end.

    I think the most body soap I have ever kept around is 3 drug store bottles, unless I got soap for Christmas. I do normally just keep 1 shampoo and conditioner around, 2 at most.
    I'll be interested to see a hair product declutter from you. I feel like you are so knowledgable of these kinds of products, plus I know you like luxury, so if you like it, it should be good.

    Yay for having just one! I recently discovered that Nioxin is the best shampoo for me and so I gave away my big old bottle of Tresseme to my sister. My big un-glamorous bottle of shampoo will last me at least a year and it's so nice to not have to think about buying a new one any time soon.
    I have a small question about your hair that I don't think you addressed in your hair routine videos. Since you rarely brush your hair, do you find long stray hairs all over your house? I did when I had long hair, and I'm just wondering about your experience. Thanks for everything you do!

    • @rebekahkasper953

      Sal Murdock obviously not Hannah, but I have curly hair so I don’t brush my hair regularly/daily. And YES hairs are everywhere. I try to gently run my fingers along my hair each morning and pull the loose ones out to catch them. I find they stay in pretty well considering, because of my hairs texture. But yes... they still get everywhere.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  5 лет назад +1

      I do get some loose hairs around, but I also find that a lot of them stay on my head in amongst the other hairs. not brushing has the benefit of keeping my hair grippy and gritty and a bit tangled so it sort of holds them in. When do brush it, they all come out at once. I think it might be more of a struggle if my hair were more naturally silky.

    Thanks for inspiring my no buy year! I have wayyy too many body products, especially boy lotion-esque products because I rarely use them. I bought them because they smell good, but I am a bit scent sensitive, especially when I go to sleep. I also happen to be a nighttime shower type of person. So how does this fit together? It doesn't! Why do I have so many of these if I can't use them?! It makes no sense at all.

    I used to work at Whole Foods and would take advantage of sales. The last time I moved, I kept finding paper bags of bar soap that I had bought on sale. This was 2015 and I kept taking advantage of $1 a bar fancy soap.
    I moved in September 2015 AND I STILL HAVENT BOUGHT SOAP SINCE. I had 30+ bars of soap. WHY? That scares me. That I would keep buying stuff despite having so much already.

    How do you find the dyes in the lush body wash?
    I got one of the Christmas ones the year before last - and it smelt divine, but it was BRIGHT red and every time I used it my shower looked like a blood bath! It actually stained my shower for a while, and I had to declutter it. I couldn’t deal with having to clean the shower everyday, and I’ve been scared to try another one ever since, even though I really want one!

    I would have accepted the body wash. I have one in my shower and another one in my cabinet. I can't think of the idea of running out of essentials like body wash, tooth paste, floss, deodorant etc... When my shampoo is a little bit less than half I keep an eye at sales and restock, even though I'm also not buying as much as I used to. If there's a crisis or sth I'll have some for a while lol Maybe I'm a bit crazy lol

    I don't know if it's been covered in a video I haven't seen (I've watched a lot, but not all), but what do you do when you get a product and then don't like it? For instance, I've been suffering from dry, itchy scalp and bought a bottle of "moisturizing" shampoo, but then it ended up making my hair and scalp feel even more dry. In that situation, do you power through?

      I have psoriasis on my scalp - and the only thing that works for me is the ‘soak and float’ shampoo bar from lush. It’s amazing, I honestly suggest trying it. 👍🏼

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  5 лет назад

      I didn't end up with this problem much during my no-buy because I was afraid to buy new-to-me things in case they were horrible and then I had to use them up. But if something was really bad for my skin or hair, rather than "just ok," I would not have kept using it. At that point it's not really skincare or haircare, if it's not "caring" for you, does that make sense? I talked about it at some point but I can't remember which video.
