All your life you have been exploring with art to "do your work in the world", and even though you might rather use writing to get your message through, I believe that this new medium came and found you. This is it, Hannah. Your message goes through. Your work in the world gets done. Thanks so much for the relevant content you are bringing.

    Have you considered capturing your experiences in a book? Each of your videos is like a beautiful and powerful essay. I can relate to what you said about clothes and identity. My closet is filled with pieces that reflect who I want to be. Perhaps focusing on what sparks joy (some pieces immediately come to mind) will make my wardrobe a reflection of who I actually am.

    Having an edited wardrobe helps you to identify gaps as well. I went from having three closets full of clothes to half a closet about two years ago. After two years I was finally able to identify what it is that I constantly wish I had but didn't. For the last five months I have found myself looking for a tweed blazer, a gray, lose-fitted, structured jacket that is knee length, cropped, black dress pants, and leather loafers. I decided to buy them this year and have them be the only additions to my closet other than basics that might need to be replaced.
    What I like about my system is that I often felt that I had gaps in my old wardrobe but it was impossible to tell what I was really missing and what was a passing desire. But I figured out my style by cutting down and I consistently miss having the same items. Plus my closet feels diverse rather than uniform. I can look like a bohemian flower child or a CEO, I can go goth to socialite without much issue. I have solids, patterns, casual, structured, basically a huge mix of things to fit whatever mood I am in but with an edited closet. It only takes a few key items to alter a look and I was very successful in keeping those key items without even planning it out. I watch a ton of minimalism videos that suggest a color scheme or certain basic style and I knew that wasn't for me so I take on what someone once called a "maximal minimal" closet. Basically I have about 70-80% statement pieces and about 20-30% basics or average pieces and that allows me to have an incredibly diverse closet that fits comfortably in my side of our standard closet space. The added bonus is I have also gotten better at identifying the items that don't belong and have gradually been able to reduce further while making very selective additions.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  5 лет назад +4

      I totally agree with the thing about seeing the gaps! I still need one pair of pants. The ones from Aritiza didn't work out. I also have a balance of basics and statement, that's such a good way to look at it.

      Insert_Something_Meaningful what you have now i my current goal. I am a bit of a ‘late bloomer’ when it comes to fashion (I’m 28) and this year i want to discover my style apart from the basics i know but don’t really love.
      I LOVE statement pieces. I am a sucker for big floral patterns for example. I know after 28 years what cuts suits me and which ones do not. And yet i can’t really figure out how i want to look most of the time. So I just play it safe and wear jeans and a t shirt.
      And while i love some of my shirts and jeans (and also wearing the combination) half or more of it is just bleh.
      And the statement pieces I do have, I absolutely adore but have no idea how to style/wear them. They are nice clothes to cover my body but not an outfit. And to be perfectly honest, they are not that statement/editorial that it should require a great one in a million stylist. I just don’t know what the bleep i am doing 😂
      Soooooo way to long post. Sorry about that.
      Tldr; goals. You define my current fashion goal.

      @@EmmieMaria265 I am a long post writer too, that is why I suck at Twitter. LOL. I had the same problem, tons of statement pieces I never wore because they just seemed like extra work to wear and in the morning I just wanted to throw something on and get out the door. I would default to the easy clothes every time. About two years ago I started getting into minimalism and figured out I had to make a choice with my clothing, either go for the basics I wore all the time and get rid of my statement pieces, or get rid of my basics and wear only my statement items. I couldn't get rid of the statement pieces, I loved them too much. Once I got rid of about 70% of my clothes I had no choice but to wear the statement items and it forced me to style them the night before by laying them out on my bed to see how they looked (saves time in the morning as a bonus). Eventually I figured out what went best with them using what I had. Other times I was finally able to figure out what other item I needed to buy to make the whole thing work.
      By getting rid of the majority of my clothing I just kind of left myself with no other option. I did have to go out and find a few basics from time to time to make the outfit what I wanted but I would go to thrift stores with a very specific list of what I was looking for to get it or if it was a basic I was willing to invest in I would go ahead and buy it new. In the end I spend about 20% of what I use to in a year on clothing because I know what I am looking for and what I want to get.
      Best advice I can give is cut out clothing you default to but don't like so you are forced to use the stuff you love. Plan out your outfit so it is just as easy to put on in the morning and you don't end up trying to make a statement piece work when you are trying to get ready for work and don't have the time. Finally, use pinterest to search for similar items to what you have and see how other people style it. I am 30 so I was 28 when I went through the same thing. I was just tired of wearing clothing I didn't like everyday when I had three closets full of clothing. Also, most of my statement pieces came from thrift stores and antique stores. They are not these elaborate designer items, they are just distinctive for one reason or another. Everyone in my office loves my clothing even though I probably spent the least on my wardrobe. However, because I have limited my clothing and shopping, I find that I am more willing to spend more for the perfect item so instead of buying 20 things that are cute from Goodwill I buy one that is perfect from Free People, Anthropologie, or this local vintage place. Everyone is different but I hope some of this tips work for you and you can find a system that makes you happy.

    For years I too searched for my identity with clothes but I think it came with time and experience (and also not enjoying shopping and therefore having to rely on what I already had) that I finally discovered my style. I can honestly say that I do enjoy my closet without constantly feeling like I need to add to it. I'm happy to wear the same things over and over again because they're my favourite pieces! Also, can I just say I love seeing you put together outfits on your instagram. You have a great eye!

      I loved the clothing haul video that I saw of yours, Melissa! I think the search for personal style is such an interesting topic. I'm starting to think about how it can be done without going through a phase of overconsumption like I did.

    • @keodi1
      @keodi1 5 лет назад +2

      @Melissa Gold, Same here, I searched for years for my identity with clothing, until I decided to do a capsule wardrobe back in 2014 after viewing the true cost documentary. that capsule wardrobe really helped me zone in on my personal style, I stiff continue with my capsule wardrobe , and I buy quality as opposed to quantity.

  • @JillyC5
    @JillyC5 5 лет назад +20

    I'm turning into such a fan-girl I have to stop myself liking the video until you actually say something i like..lol. I read somewhere about most of us 'saving' our favourite pieces of clothing and wearing things we liked less and it was a revelation to me. I am not short of money, if I ever actually wore something out (never happened!) I could replace it, so I stopped doing that, am still getting rid of things daily that I discover don't spark joy and I have space in my wardrobe, but every day I'm wearing my favourite things and feeling so much happier about my choices.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  5 лет назад +4

      yes, I think that's part of it! I'm not sure I was exactly saving the pieces, but I was thinking of them as more "elevated" and not right for everyday. But when I started wearing them it elevated the everyday, and it was such a revelation.

    I personally love the essay-style videos you put out. There aren't a lot of channels that make video essays about fashion/beauty, yours is a pretty unique voice in this community and I think that's wonderful! I really feel what you described, I dove into minimalism a few years ago and it really confronted me with a lot of identity issues that were tied into my consumerism.

  • @tinastaniscia9057

    Before I had even heard of Marie Kondo, years ago I had read something to the effect of 'you wear 80% of your clothes 20% of the time and 20% of your clothes 80% of the time'. With this in mind, I purged my closet and drawers of most of that 80% that was unworn. It changed my life. In a way, it helped me create a uniform that made dressing for the day easier. Yes, the same clothing items are in regular rotation, but it is okay. Earrings, scarves, and my makeup dress things up or down. My uniform gives me confidence and comfort. As I go through my palette no-buy year, I will work hard to buy much less of everything else this year. I am in desperate need of black boots. Having yet to find my perfect pair, I will happily keep wearing the ones I have although they are VERY worn. Thank you Hannah. You so eloquently make sense in sharing your thoughts and your story. Please keep your wonderful content coming. You have become a highlight of my week.

I can totally identify with your problem. You helped me to see that I was the same. I want to declutter my closet but am procrastinating. I don't even know why. It's full of beautiful clothes, just too many! Today's video was really helpful. You inspire me! I've been shopping my closet which is good, but it is so messy and overstuffed that it's hard to find things. I am in no way a minimalist! Just the opposite! But I've been watching you and the Minimalists and there's a certain appeal that's growing on me. Like they say, it's just stuff. Love people, use things! Thank you.

    This is one of those videos where you so eloquently put into words the things that I've felt and experienced. I related so much to what you said about constant evolution and wanting your style to reflect you at every moment. Something that has helped me a lot is allowing myself to feel more comfortable repeating outfits over and over again - after all, the most stylish people tend to have a signature look! This means I can stop searching for perfect things to wear and just enjoy the perfect things I have until they fall apart. :)

    I can really relate to only realising that you have too much stuff when you've stopped buying. I stopped buying stuff in July 2018 and I had a massive cleanout of clothes and books this January. I realised I owned several tops that had become way too worn out that I still kept but never wore. I realised that I had clothes that had never fit that well that I always somehow wanted to fit into - even when that wasn't good for my mental health, or practical. I still have a lot of clothing! But now I actually wear all my pieces and combine them in more exciting ways.

    I've realized that if I wear clothes that don't immediately feel like me/fit my mood I feel really bad about myself. That's why I love having a small curated selection of clothes. Everything is 100% me. There are no random items that have nothing to do with my personality and sense of style.

  • @romanticashale
    @romanticashale 5 лет назад +4

    I think purging our wardrobes is one of the most therapeutic things we can do. I used to also collect tons of clothes and accessories, especially when I was in college. I was an avid thrift store shopper and I loved finding old funky pieces. My closet used to be stuffed full of all sorts of things for any occasion. The problem was I mostly just wore jeans, leggings, t-shirts, and hoodies. I like to be comfortable more than anything, and that's always been true. And as much as I loved having all my mini skirts, sheer 90s style blouses, and patterned tights, I rarely wore them because when I did I would get harassed by gross men.
    And I do still love some of those things, and I admire them on other people, but I know myself. Cleaning out my closet and being really ruthless about it felt like a breath of fresh air. I don't think I realized how stifling all that stuff was. I cleared out my jewelry too and that felt incredible. I had tons and tons of it but only ever wore stud earrings, a small ring my mother gave me for my 17th birthday (which has since broken) and maybe a simple quartz necklace I had made. I have no idea why I had such a collection.
    I purge my wardrobe regularly and I think the amount of stuff I have now is probably about a tenth of what I used to have. And it all fits, hallelujah! Definitely not something that used to be the case.
    I'm enjoying these videos about how your no-buy changed certain things. I'm doing a no buy on makeup for 2019 and a low buy on other things, and the only reason I'm doing a low buy on other things is because I've already decluttered so much of my life that I know I will be in need of things as the year goes on and I use up/wear out what I have. I find a lot of inspiration in your channel (it's why I picked my own channel back up) and watching your videos helps me to be more introspective about myself and how consumerism affects me.
    (This was a very long comment and I apologize, I don't know what came over me, over here just writing an essay on a RUclips video haha)

    The way you described everything in this video was so inspiring. This winter and fall season, I've pretty much purchased a whole new wardrobe, because I didn't feel good in any of the clothes I had from previous years. I've lost weight, and exercise so much, but all of my clothes were baggy and brought back all insecurities from the years before I started hitting the gym. Since I've been home for Winter break, I've been wearing the same few things that I took home/got for the holidays, and I've realized that I need to purge every single item from previous years that never made me feel good in the first place. I'm anxious to get back to my dorm room and do so. I finally dress the way I feel inside, and because of it I feel amazing about myself every day. Thank you for this video; I am continuously inspired by you!

    I love hearing your perspective! As I have grown, I’ve had similar experiences with growing more appreciative for what I have and I love having a smaller collection of pieces I cherish. But I’ve had a different experience because I have found myself not wearing statement pieces and instead gravitating towards more simple pieces with neutral colors and patterns. When I’m in a store, my eyes gravitate towards the bold pieces, but when they are in my closet, I reach for my simple pieces. I’ve had to remind myself that I am most confident in basic pieces and I can love and appreciate statements pieces without buying them. I LOVE seeing your outfits because I can do just that! 💕

    I wish I could be this well-spoken... just listening to you is like listening to literature. Those earrings are really stunning on you, I am not at all surprised you have such particular feelings about them :).
    I have never set a particular budget for clothes shopping for myself per se, but I have started to shift in a more minimalistic and more conscious approach to fashion in the past 1-2 years. For me, in a way, it is an opposite to you, but for a similar reason: I found that I love looking at most of the "more interesting" items like art, but I don't feel comfortable in them. One of the main problems was I kept buying items that looked unique and fun and different, but they were not my style. I got rid of everything that I did not feel myself in, and I had to come to terms with the fact that I might not be that artistic fashionista lady that I wanted to be (especially boho clothing... I'm never going to be this aerial natural fashion fairy :D). I still own some more unique pieces. But I had to learn not to buy something just because it is nice to look at it. I also focused on getting items that I would be able to mix well with my other items and would be able to wear for multiple occasions, and also, to buy stuff I actively need because I don't own them (like certain items to complete an office look or a night out look or a special event look). Even though I did buy 90% of my stuff from thrift stores (and not even the consignment types but the ones that sell mostly high street / mall brands), I still save a lot of money now, because now I focus on getting items I am 100% I would actively use on a regular basis. I also had to learn myself, too, how to use my own closet for not just weating clothes but be aligned with my personality or style ow however you want to name it.

    Hannah, I found your video three weeks ago talking about no-buy year. As a recovering shopaholic, (who has spent the last two years purging a ton of the unworn fast fashion in my closet for two years), it was the perfect push to kick it up a notch. It coincided with my renewed commitment to consume and waste less.
    Truthfully, I did the panic buy immediately before (as you predicted) but then returned all three items. Also purchased the one exception in my rules and found I didn’t love it as much as I thought. So, that too went back. Purging for me is now a DAILY activity that gives me a thrill! I literally examine each article and identify if it suits the current me. I have no problem letting go of all the things I’ve purged. I’ve donated dozens of bags of clothing to friends and charity, but still have tons of new, pricier items I’ve set aside to sell (though the task of selling is still overwhelming, yet something I’m excited to delve into). I just want them all gone NOW!
    Since then, I’ve been good at sticking to my rules. I’ve taken your advice and attempted to do those alternative activities and it’s still a work in progress. I have finally touched clothing items I meant to alter for years, purging many of those too. In addition, me telling everyone about my no buy year has been super helpful for accountability. Most of all, your continued sharing here has been super motivational and I thank you immensely. Xx

    I’ve been heavily considering a major closet declutter also. What stopped my fast fashion buying over the last two years or so has been a combination of two things. First, being broke. But second and almost more important, I started working at the Renaissance Faire and focusing all my fashion budget into hand made period clothing. After seeing how incredibly well my hand made stuff that looked amazing held up in heavy use and mud week after week I’ve not been interested in wearing my cheap old navy clothes anymore. It changed me from wearing tight yoga pants for comfort to realizing they were actually itchy and opting for long skirts. Now I wait until that specific week of the year to get my one $200 dress and I’m done.

    Thank you for an inspiring content. When I listened to your story It rang a bell. I was interested in beautiful fashion from the age of 12 years old. I sewed some dresses and skirts for myself because growing up we were not well off. I was into art and creativity from a young age and always paged through magazines for inspiration for my dressing style. Now I am in my early sixties and still enjoy beautiful clothes and always get comments from people how well put together I am.
    In the past I did the same mistake of compulsive shopping for fashion and now I only buy what really makes my heart sing, and also got rid of at least half of my closet.

    I studied fashion design in Paris, and all my friends work in fashion design, so style is a big part of my personality, and also for me, a kind of language. But as I will soon move to Canada, I had to get rid of a big part of my clothes. I experienced the same shift as you said, the second shift I mean (because I didn’t stop shopping!). I realized that I was keeping some clothes because I loved them so much in the past, but now they were not really my style anymore and I was just used to the idea of loving them. I got rid of clothes that I love but didn’t wear and I didn’t want to keep them just because they were beautiful. I’m happy I can give them to somebody that will love them maybe more than me. Now I have the same goal as you, I want a very specific wardrobe with my most loved pieces, and I can’t wait to pack my suitcases with my favorite items.
    I no longer have attachment to things, and I could almost get rid of everything, but I want to keep the pieces that are the most close to « my language » of the moment. And sometimes I still have some conflict, like, if something suit me very very very well…
    I embraced the fact that my style is something evolving, and I love to see my clothes coming and going. And that is also why I didn’t stop shopping, it is because I love the change. Having new clothes give me a feeling of evolution, and I need to work on that now!!
    When I will be in Canada, I think I will make a no buy on clothes, as I will have new goals, and anyway, my habits won’t be the same, and I won’t be able to find as easily as in France the brands that I love second hand. :)
    I really love your videos, I’m watching them while painting, and it’s always a delight!
    Sorry for the long comment, I have many thoughts on fashion and style, and sorry if my English is not perfect ;) love !!

    Those earrings ARE fabulous! Fashion has always been my main vice. Makeup is more recent and now that I have "everything" it's all just more powders and creams in different packaging 🤷🏾‍♀️. I thought cutting back on buying makeup would be hard but I haven't bought any makeup in months. Fashion, on the other hand, has been on an extreme uptrend. Lately I've been focused on making sure everything is comfortable AND stylish. No more 4in stilettos and wedges meant more kittens and flats. I'm also transitioning into leadership roles and needed to step things up. But I'm almost done and ready to conquer the beast. But first I gotta find those earrings!😱😎

    Please continue speaking eloquently in an essayist style about consumerism - it's wonderful! My shopping obsession also started with clothes, cutting back on clothes shopping is what got me to spend more time/money on makeup. For the past several years I've cleaned out my closet two or three times a year, each time getting rid of more than I brought in since the last purge. It's helped me narrow down a lot of the colors/silhouette I enjoy wearing. I did this last week but only got rid of a few items, I'm not in a place where my wardrobe is perfect, but I'm also not in a place where I can be truly ruthless and honest about what is worth keeping. Hopefully your closet clean out video will be inspiring!

    The earrings are gorgeous - something to save up for and keep forever, knowing that you can switch up outfits and go from day to night, just by adding a few accessories. Likewise, the top is an excellent wardrobe staple, without being samey, due to the elegant flared sleeve. Combined with formal trousers, jeans, long skirts, short skirts, full skirts, form-fitting skirts - endless possibilities. You would never know it was the same top and the quality would mean years of use. What you say about identity is something I experienced in the past, but now I think I just become acquisitive, for the buzz of getting novelties. This is the essence of consumerism I guess. I allowed myself a few purchases in the January sales, because where I live, sales are controlled by law and there are just two a year. I made sure I was very selective and got things that I knew I would need throughout the year, or something I loved and was reduced to at least half price. I already feel like I have no space and my wardrobe is stuffed too full. A few things are going to go to textile recycling this year, because they are just damaged or worn out, or else not really appropriate for my current lifestyle. I totally get what you are say about enjoying what you have and being creative with that. It's about taking time to smell the roses, live in the moment and enjoy living in our own skins. The fashion designer, Vivienne Westwood has a motto: "Buy less, choose well, make it last." This is the opposite ethos to the fashion market, but she's not the first designer I have heard say stuff like this.

    Hannah, have you ever heard of dressing your truth? You might think it’s silly, but it solved the existential question of does this top represent who I am at the core of my being? It basically divides people up into types based on their overall energy, facial features, and movement. My friends tease me about it because I’m so obsessed, but it has basically changed everything for me because now everything I have in my closet goes together effortlessly, and I am no longer overwhelmed by too many possibilities. I felt that the more I went through 2018 and disentangled myself from my love of shopping, the less and more my fashion was entwined with my identity (schrodinger's fashion sense: both struggling to show identity and not). What I mean is that I identified less and less with what clothes I wore, and as such searched less and less for the perfect item to showcase 'me' to the world...and when I did buy, I got so picky that I only bought pieces that did, but did not actively sought them out. Anyway what I'm trying to say with this word salad is that I really relate to this video, as usual, and I love it.

Is that something you’ve ever had to take into account with your edited closet or have you figured out your own routines around your body? As I think about editing my closet, it’s something I’m a bit concerned about. And I do love following your Instagram. Thank you for your words on fashion and identity. They struck a chord with me.

      I have had to deal with that from time to time! My weight still fluctuates but usually not enough to change the fit of most of my clothes. I also gravitate towards flowy, drapey things so that helps.

    First that top and earrings look absolutely stunning on you (I hope you get to keep I). I have a conundrum in fashion styles; should I wear classic, vintage, trendy, artsy, drama and romantic how do I know? How did you know? I am taking you more for a dramatic/Sexy style. I love that quote” I like to celebrate and sing my song.” I am going to steal that quote especially when people comment on my shopping. I wish I had your lovely smile and voice that would seal the deal for them to mind their beeswax.

    Hi, my name is Maggie, and I am an identity-seeking fashion lover 🙋🏻‍♀️ I have been going through similar closet revelations, but stretched out over 3 or 4 years. I so appreciate your eloquence and I cannot wait to see more about your closet on your channel. Do you find that you *care* for your clothes better now, like washing and storing with care? Have you done any mending or repairs?
    On another note, you are one of those youtubers who makes me want to start my channel back up... kind of like reading Plath or Lydia Davis makes me inspired to write... so I just want to say THANK YOU for all you do. I’m curious to know whether your intro ever trips you up the way we sometimes keep writing the old year at the start of a new one... do you ever accidentally say “and this is my no-buy year” instead of beauty budget? Haha.

      I definitely do better with storing my clothes and treating them more carefully now! I love it. I've never said the wrong thing in the intro for filming but I keep WRITING "my no buy year" in the video titles and title cards. I've had to go back and fix it three times.
