That flash of green every time you blink 💚
I definitely feel you on stress making you backslide. I have been so stressed every day for a couple of months, and I just feel good when I pick up something that I've been wanting (food, makeup, beauty stuff)

Girl, I feel you. Shopping isn't my particular unhealthy coping mechanism. For me, it is desserts. My brain skips right to " I feel bad, let's eat sugar!" And I find that I have zero chill when it comes to desserts when I'm stressed. I am bottomless and I try to fill it with cake. Which works just as well as Sephora browsing. In that it doesn't work at all. When I see that I'm seeking out desserts to comfort instead of for the actual enjoyment of tiramisu, the only thing that works is a dessert ban to force myself into healthier coping mechanisms. I don't diet or demonize sugar, but I don't think it is healthy to rely on pie for emotional support. That's what friends, family, dogs, and therapists are for - not banana pudding.
I will now cease blathering about dessert in your comment section. Just wanted to say: I see you and I totally get that out of control feeling.

I feel you too! I have had a similar relationship with sweet treats that has only been put in check by going cold turkey, similar to my no-buy. Sugar is amazingly addictive. If you enjoy reading long-form articles, this one about the history of sugar in health is one of my top 2 long-form reads of all time: www.theguardian.com/society/2016/apr/07/the-sugar-conspiracy-robert-lustig-john-yudkin

i'm buying 'fun' makeup (stuff other than replacements of 'boring' concealers etc) only twice a year. It's every 6 months - my birthday, and the black friday sales. It means i keep my 'want' feeling for months rather than satisfying it and wanting a new thing. My budget makes me prioritise and by the time the purchase comes it's more of an errand. I'm happy to be a consumer and want stuff, but doing it through a wishlist is free. By the time i buy, i've been and swatched and played in the shop SO many times, I'm never disappointed by what I've bought.

Once again I have to say : how brave of you to come to this platform and be this honest. I had a terrible month as well and shopped way more than I had planned to. The only saving grace is all the things I bought I was planning to buy, but at a more spaced out pace throughout the year. I decided to go from a monthly budget to a no buy for the rest of the year because this abundance of items coming my way and giving me shopper's high is a sensation that can be quite addictive, especially since the things that were bothering me have not improved.

This 38 minute video went by so fast! And I found your critique of your spending habits so interesting and familiar.
I am much older than you Hannah and have built up a lovely nest egg with my husband because we have always been savers.
But a few years ago we suffered extreme stress that lasted over a number of years, and that’s when my shopping habits changed to the detriment of our bank balance.
    And I can’t stop.

The "big spender" feeling! Your reenactment cracked me up, especially because it was like looking in a mirror. I get just the same way whenever I make a big purchase, whether it's an emergency that I was thankfully able to handle or a special item I'd been saving up for. I replaced my iPad earlier this year and it was like flipping a binge-shopping switch. Self-awareness is the all-important first step! My therapist once referred to "letting triggers change into alarms," and I think about that in all areas of my life.
Instead of, "Ooh, I just dropped $300 on an iPad, I'm rich, looks like it's time to buy three new pairs of shoes and also start a new skincare regime!!", I want to train my mind to go "Yay, I was able to replace my iPad! - Beep beep beep, warning, warning, impulse to overspend approaching."

I didn't have an emergency financial cushion and, thanks to you, I have saved over £400 so far this year. I'm now saving £100 a month. Before this year, I was supposedly saving £50 a month but actually always ended up spending it because of my frittering habit. You've been my inspiration and I appreciate your honesty. That glass of wine may or may not have buggered up your laptop, but sometimes the occasional glass of wine (or piece of dark chocolate) helps with stress.

On the idea of putting a harness on Sadie, introduce it slowly, with pets and treats. When I first put a harness on either of my boy cats, they decided they couldn't walk anymore and life was over. After working with them, they now come running when they hear their harnesses being moved. They adore going out on a leash, and I honestly think I could take Loki for a walk down the block if I had patience to walk slowly enough to let him sniff everything. Like many things with cats, you have to work them up to it, but once you do, it's a great form of enrichment for them! Good luck!

I bought Erin's faces as I was out of sunscreen, excited to try it out! Also, i read your essay on 'about fear of horses. As a musician, reading the section about teaching, the quote about how it's like bleeding out and some people catch and some people just watch you bleed, was so....ahhh it was just one of those moments where the key clicks in the lock for me. And then to read about that moment of joy, that "noncreative" dude that expressed so beautifully how he took in your poetry, made me tear up. Because yes, the torturous art of bearing soul onto page is rewarded so infrequently and in such fleeting moments yet somehow it is Redemption with q true capital R. I just...I get it, and I appreciate those words on the page so, so much. Not only in their content, but in their musicality as the words splay across my brain. Thank you for that essay, it touched me. Sorry this has zero to do with your video lol

Yeah, that accountability thing. I recently needed some clothing for summer and even though my husband genuinely does not care what I spend or what I buy, I showed him everything, showed him everything I ordered that didn't fit and was getting returned, and added up the total for him. It was just a protection against resuming binge shopping behavior. So yeah that accountability helps me a lot too.

I had a similar experience this month. I was doing a no buy and I made it a good 6 months pretty well. June was very stressful and I had a lot of things going on. I ended up buying a few things and that pretty much opened the flood gates. The more that I bought the more I wanted and the easier it became to just buy the thing. I think that is need to move on, get back on the no buy, and learn from my mistake. This video came at the perfect time for me. Thanks!

I feel the EXACT same and this video hit me hard. I've been on an unofficial low buy since January just because I didn't feel like buying makeup and I also recognised the behaviours you talk about. I was doing so well, I had only bought one replacement and didn't have an urge to buy makeup but then I got my birthday money... I bought a pair of boots I needed, and then did a small looxi haul of four shadows and a highlight. After that, I found myself constantly window shopping online, looking for things to want. When I know that we need to be saving to move. It sucks but your video helped me also snap back to reality and recognise those bad behaviours! Thank you for always being honest with us ❤️

This was amazing and I love that you reaped the reward of all your hard work of a no buy year and then moving into your budget. Love your “ya I got this, I was able to buy that!” One thing that has helped me not buy so impulsively is to use the wish list or favorites that a lot of websites have now. It is interesting, when I go back later to look at those items, almost all of the time I am wondering why I thought that item was so attractive to me. All of this content is multi layered of our emotions.

I feel like you were talking about me when you explained about pressing the shopping dopamine button when down or overwhelmed. I used to have an addiction, which I’ve tackled quite well I think. But recently, work has been crazy and I’ve two young kids so when I’m not working I’m giving all I have to them. I found myself “wanting to want” for the same reasons you explained, but also it’s something for me. It’s an unhealthy form of self care, and quicker and easier than trying to find the time and childcare to do something better like exercise or get a massage.

What a thought provoking video! In my recent experience, what has seemed most bizarre was how deeply the feelings of eustress and distress have felt interconnected; I love school and was so excited to hand in my Bachelor Thesis and present it, but at the same time, the process weighed on me so heavily that I've been having nightmares about the final exam (despite having passed with flying colors weeks ago) and have observed how the shopping mindset (like online browsing but not buying) seems to have persisted past the distressful work period. I think the way you describe the stress related to high-stakes events/accomplishments is on point. Before this past month, the no-buy felt effortless, but suddenly I was tempted by drugstore products and almost dropped a lipliner into my basket without thinking! 😂
On a more optimistic note, I am so excited about your new project, I wish you the best of luck!!!!!

Life of the mind... I love that. As an introvert I live in my mind. I work things out like you. I think and think and think. I analyze the why I do certain things. Shopping is certainly one of those things. Old patterns are hard to break because our brains want to go back onto that off ramp when we should be gliding down the interstate going to where we need to be. Just when we think we have things under control those old patterns pop up. I just got back from a trip to England in which I spent a lot of money to go but it was an experience of a life time and I spent a lot of money before I left getting ready to go. When it was over, I cried because everything I had done for the last six months was prepare for a big adventure. Now it is over and I am home. My idea was to go on a no buy like you to cut down on spending. I had to go buy a vacuum cleaner today. It is a necessity and I went to the mall. I do not live in a city like I used to and I have to drive an hour to be at one. I looked at all the sales and saw pretty things but was not tempted because I had bought so much before my trip. I went off my weight loss program and I have to get back on. I have to remember the reasons and motivations behind it to begin with. I do not want to lose ground. I have to work my program. It's hard being a grown up and telling ourselves NO. We do need accountability. Sort of a mom to say, Did you need it? My mom always said, "Spend wisely". Don't beat yourself up. Honey, we were born to shop. Just pick yourself up and get back on the interstate. Find your center and the whys you are doing things to begin with. You're ok. You're going to be ok.

Hi Hannah. I just want you to know that because of your recommendation I bought the sunscreen from Erin's Faces. I love it. I've had skin cancer and so you can imagine how important a good sunscreen is to me. Every time I apply it I hear your voice saying "it is so cosmetically elegant" I love it. I just received an email from Erin's Faces about their Monoi Tiare Oil. I read the article they posted about it on their page and bought it right away. Thank you for bringing Erin's Faces to my attention.

It took me all day to finish watching. So many thoughts. Forgive me if this comes across as disjointed, but I don’t want to lose my train of thought. Stress/anxiety=fear. What were you afraid of during the stress of the month? You spoke about how you distracted yourself, but from what? Sit with that and see if you can find an answer. You might be breaking some boundaries into unknown territory and growing. Plus, moving so recently, is also a factor you managed and it isn’t to be dismissed. The moving was actual and symbolic. I don’t know many people who can take much “extra” in their lives without some kind of blow back. Lastly, be kind to yourself as you do your work in the world. On any particular day, we could be various versions of ourselves, therefore be kind to the version that shows up. Incorporate some quiet time, or music, or reading, or something that is pleasurable that nurtures your soul, a bath, some nature, to ground yourself. Life is not a race, or projects, or even accomplishments. The joy you recognize for yourself you have already and I wish more joy for you in the stillness of just being.

I've been extra stressed and sleep deprived because I'm helping my hubby recover from surgery. I'm working 2 jobs and everything else he normally does and I'm *tired*. I, too, have been looking for stuff to buy, to escape, etc. Everything you mentioned. I'm also working on consumer debt and other loans. Great video. IDK if you bought your cat a harness but I had a very funny experience with that. My cat Chloe wouldn't get up so I picked up my phone to take a picture of her. She decided to walk around the couch with the retractable leash attached to her harness. The handle got caught on the leg of the couch, pulled out, released from the couch and rapidly retracted toward the harness, scaring the living crap out of my cat. I tried to get to her but she started running around the couch, retracting, releasing and the handle was flying wildly as this happened. I basically covered my head and backed away. Finally silence. I looked behind the couch. The harness was empty. My cat hid under the futon for hours until I pulled it out and grabbed her. Nope. Haven't tried it again but it was pretty hilarious! Anyway, keep up your good work. You are an inspiration. Having the support of others makes it easier but ultimately, you are only accountable to yourself. We accept you as you are. That's why we enjoy your channel.

"Spending money breeds spending money." RELATABLE 100%. I get the same way: when I *have* to spend money, then I *want* to. I still have that desire and it drives me crazy. But unlike my 20-something self, who would just spend the money anyway on anything that she thought was cute, my 30-something self has the self-control and foresight to not give in to that desire...although, I am so, so tempted to because May was a hard month for me as well :/ and the retail therapy thing is real.

I do the same with food/exercise. I usually stay within a weight range but I do fluctuate. Every once in a while I’ll gain weight outside of my norm and then I’ll refocus and go on a strict diet to get back on track. Usually with a strict diet for a month or so. Then I get back into my normal weight range and loosen my rules back up again.

I don't have a shopping addiction, but I recognise so much of what you talk about, and for me it's screens. I deal with way too many things, much like you with the sawing the modeling, youtube, writing, dancing, and every other thing that comes up in life as a goal or social commitment etc, and sometimes feel like I'm crushing under it all and can't enjoy the good things that come my way, or the process leading to those. I broke my no buy / low buy plans that I had early on in the year. I felt very ashamed at the time, I even felt guilty watching your videos after I did because I told you about my plans. I did manage to get through about 3 months of a no buy and I do see the progress in my mental state regarding shopping. I have since been spending much less than I was before on makeup and I do not feel the compulsion to buy things like I did at the end of last year but I do think I could use a no buy again. I think I'll plan for it to be from July through September. I was about to say I would start a replacement no buy only now but I do want to pick up a couple of lip glosses. Otherwise I think I'm set. I might buy a replacement tinted brow gel and a back up mascara but otherwise I think that will be it leading in to my no buy beginning in July.

I feel where you're coming from so much. My editor sent me an email letting me know she was almost finished compiling her developmental edit letter for my novel, and I'm girding my loins for the work coming. As a result of this good stress, my bad habits are resurfacing -- sugar cravings, carb cravings, and the urge to shop. Even though this work is going to bring me closer to my life goals, it's still triggering my tendency toward bad habits.
And yes! Creative people need our downtime to process and ruminate in order to do our best work. It's hard when you feel pulled in so many directions. I go to Big Sur when I need a recharge -- that place fulfills my spirit. Thank you for the insight and validation. • @sarahwalden178

I have so many things that this video has made me think about, but I’ll try to keep it to this one: what about going on a no-buy but not limiting PR or gifts, then seeing what that does to your shopping behaviors? If the issue is how PR/gifts interact with your budget, then it would be interesting to change one of those things, but not the other, sort of like a science experiment where one factor is the control and the other is the variable. Instituting a no buy and restricting free things may not tell you much about how the two interact, because you’d be restricting both. But I’d be very interesting to see what happens to desire when you can buy nothing but do receive things. Maybe then a few months later you could switch them-back to a budget but no PR. Then compare notes-what were the results from these different experiments in moderation?
I’m sorry you’ve had such a rough month. My March and April were like that-I felt like I was constantly booked and never had a chance to stop and breathe. And my shopping behaviors also grew far worse than they had been at the beginning of my low buy, and I’m still trying to get back on track. I’m glad things are slowing down for you.

Yes! Last year I really enjoyed hearing you talk about such topics, and I am glad you decided to talk about this again. There is a void of such candid talk when it comes to no buy or finance videos. I relate to your experience so much. I had a busy and exhausting month as well, and found myself engaging in the same activities. Browsing Amazon, looking for something to want. In the midst of being overstressed and exhausted, I found myself procrastinating and slow, often sabotaging my productivity. And then I would misplace something and waste loads of valuable time to look for it. I had to step back and allow myself time to decompress and do what I love, even if it comes at a cost of taking time away from other things, like housework.

Great discussion! I am currently in counseling for anxiety and we’ve been talking about self-soothing behaviors like being glued to RUclips anytime I’m alone or eating sugary foods and how to decide if a soothing habit is good or bad longterm. You didn’t use the term self-soothing but that compulsive online searching sounds similar to my habits. Gave me more things to think about. I think my main question when you put your hard stop brakes on like a no buy, do you just sit with the anxiety/stress feelings or do you have an alternative activity to calm yourself down?

Also, I love planner stuff (stickers, washi & note pads), I have a lot!! But; I still want to buy more...I have more on my list, but; these 2 things are on the top...I found your channel through another RUclipsr...

The struggle continues.....recently I experienced big time wanting to want something when Sephora sent me a one time use 20% off...online coupon. It would expire in about 10 days of receipt. I looked and looked online...at my favs list (no, I don’t really want that after all...don’t need this or that). There was a Sephora eyeliner pencil on sale for $4...really now...waste a coupon on that? I put things in cart...took them out. Started over every day. My day of reckoning, Hannah. The deadline day. I did order something...a Charlotte Tilbury flawless and finish I 🤔 it is....not sure I’ll like it. We will see. If not, I’ll return it to the store. But for sure I don’t need it.
BTW I had a cat Ruby we would let her out in the third floor hallway to roam...neighbors would pet her...at least the ones she would let come near her. She was particular about who she let come near her. 😆

May was a strugglebus month for me as well. Fortunately, I decided to do a no buy for May and that made the spending easier, but everything else was insane. It is the busiest time of year for my business, I am helping another business get off the ground, and I’m trying to start my blog. I need both of the first two things in my life right now financially. Unfortunately that means the blog, which is a passion project, only has one post and is temporarily put on the backburner until things simmer down which makes me so sad. I am still writing and have 9-10 posts in the works; Im just not happy with them to post them yet. As you mentioned my days are completely packed and I’m not having time to “inhabit my mind”. I’m hoping that things simmer down by the end of the month.
Even with the insanity in my life my no buy went well because it’s easier to not buy than to regulate buying. I did spend a lot of time with shopping behaviors but when I consider the insanity my life is I’m trying not to beat myself up too much. So I very much agree that going back to your base rules can help to ground you. It did for me.
I’m excited about your videos about PR. I think it’ll be interesting and insightful. I think a lot of “normal” (non youtuber) folks receive PR in their lives in their own way. For example, my MIL often gives me beauty products as well as an esthetician friend, and it definitely does not “keep me from wanting to shop”. So I’m very very much looking forward to these videos.
I’m so so PROUD of you for having and being able to use your Emergency Fund. Having an EF is one of the only things that keeps my anxiety in check.
