I’m so thrilled you’re having so much success with this years epic undertaking of a giant no buy! Very much looking forward to next year and the content you have planned. You’re a genuine inspiration and I’m thinking 2019 might be the year to make it official for me, a year long no buy (with obvious rules so I can still run my business) to challenge myself to really see how my feelings towards things I want change and fade over time. I know they do, but it’s hard to get past that immediate and intense ‘wanting’, but it’s so important that I do. Thanks again and I’m glad you’re feeling better! Christmas cactus for the win! xx
Hi Hailey! Aw, thanks for the comment, it means so much coming rom you. It would be so fun to follow along on a no-buy with you. I've found that ALL spending desires fade over time, they really do. It's going to be hard to remember next year. xoxo!
I LOVE your Christmas cactus! That is totally the kind of cheeky nod to a Christmas tree I have in my home each year. So much more character than a store bought tree that looks like everybody else’s
I just found your channel a couple weeks ago and I'm upset I haven't been here since the beginning of the year! Next year I'm planning on doing a low-buy as a baby step to stepping back from consumerism game. I'm so happy I found you!
9 minutes of "blather" you slay me! I still love watching you chat about stuff, because I find your voice really relaxing - that might sound weird but I do! I am living for the Christmas Cactus too - improvisation at its finest!
I have found it so interesting within myself how much I have been drawn to the no-buy lifestyle even though I have not made the rules to live like that for a period of time. Black Friday through Cyber Monday came and went and I only bought 3 things. It was 2 gifts for my mom and a new journal for myself which I had been planning on buying, but I had been putting them off for whatever reason. I have a lot of Ulta points which I was planning on using weeks ago, but I struggled using them. I am really grateful for your channel and I had no idea that I would ever be at this point in my own shopping habits. Thank you
so true about the transference of addiction, I keep putting so much will power on one aspect only to fall somewhere else, which makes me dig deeper....I love how articulate you are about your inner processes
You have helped bring a lot of changes to my personal makeup spending, but I had that rule of I could get subscriptions. Well I’ve decided to cancel one as I looked at how much I was spending and how much was actually getting used up compared to decluttering. Because I realized what a waste it is for me I decided to take that 25 dollars every month and put it on the side for replacements in categories. I kept one box but it’s a real original one where I don’t have items like that and can truly use them happily. I never thought I would be cancelling, but you have really made me sit down and analyze every bit of the items coming in and going out. It’s really refreshing to go through these changes!
I have been doing a no-buy all year, and I also decluttered a lot. It was very eye-opening how wasteful my old subscription boxes were. At the beginning, they were useful to help me learn what I liked. After that, they were just piles of samples that I didn't need. I am also gearing up to create my rules for 2019. I think I may do something close to what you are doing. Great idea!
ImaTChure like I say subscription boxes can be great, but once we learn our preferences they can be extremely wasteful because we can get picky and see what works. I think also having that 25 a month going to the side will teach me to look for possibly more affordable options for categories that I have to repurchase consistently!
Hannah Louise Poston your so welcome! You have really made me think a lot about my goals and I’m pushing forward with them! It took a bit of time realizing the bits and pieces of what was going on, but it has taught me and will continue to teach me a lot!
You are so dedicated! Not getting a Christmas tree would make me so sad but it's awesome that you made the most out of what you have with the cactus. Also I am constantly amazing by how good your eyeshadow and hair always looks.
The little story of you and your sister really warmed my heart. It's the same with me and my sisters, they always ask me for makeup tipps and I love sharing my knowledge with them and also my decluttered makeup, because they don't have as much as I do. Love your channel, you are such an inspiration.
You inspire me so much. I can’t thank you enough for what your channel has meant to me as far as inspiration ,willpower , and just generally committing to something when gets tough. I made the comment about doing a meetup when you come to NC.. truly would love to meet you. You are a beautiful person inside and out and light in this massive RUclips world
I often crave sweets when I am not being kind/sweet enough to myself and loved ones- the body craves physical and emotional sweetness it sounds silly but sometimes it does help to have a minimal sweet treat and give yourself a moment of self love or a little hug💗💗💗great video!
You should try to maybe buid your own mini christmas tree! Pinterest is full of ideas, my favourite are the little trees made with tea bags, and I think they could fit well woth the aestetics of your studio
Chiara Masia When my kids were young, we had a year with no Christmas tree. I used tinsel and ornaments and the Holiday cards we got on the wall in the shape of a big tree. I wish I had a picture of that.
@@DonnaSimo in my house I have no space for a little tree, so I usually craft my very own mini mini trees with teabags, small branches with homemade paper ornaments, or just the draw picture put on a small pot. I love crafting and I love the results so much, they show all the love that was put into the work!
Hannah, I’ve only followed your journey for a few months, but I thoroughly enjoy listening to you. The way you speak about your behaviors and the way they’ve changed is refreshing. 🥳 (
I had recently been contemplating some kind of "no buy" year for 2019 to get my shopping habits under control and improve my finances. I discovered your channel today and I love the rules you put in place for yourself. I love the concept and that you have made it through the year! I will probably go with rules similar to what you've done. Thanks so much for sharing your journey!
If you had a live Christmas tree last year, then isn’t getting a Christmas tree right now a replacement 🤔 But I admire you being faithful to your rules, and the cactus is adorable 😍
I’ve just discovered your channel and you have really inspired me. I’m going to give serious thought to my no buy list. I have been cleaning out my house and only want to keep what I need and love.
Christmas cactus had me cackling. Idk about everyone else but I think it looks adorable with its shiny sequin star on the top all decked out in shiny gold baubles. Thank you so much for the giggle, and it's been so amazing watching you this whole year! (I haven't commented on all videos because I'm lame and often forget, but know I've watched all of them). Can't wait to see what you have in store for us next year.
Omg I never really think about you being an influencer but I’ve actually bought at least 3 products because of you (during my replacement only no buy). This means you are actually the most effective influencer in my life that I don’t know personally.
I always think that experiences are some of the best gifts! Instead of asking for "stuff" you could ask friends and family for concert tickets or experience-type things like golf lessons
So Hannah, if you buy a tree every year for your window, then buying one this year would make it a replacement to the ones you had previously...at least in my opinion. I wouldn't see it as breaking your rules. However, I would say that I do not buy Christmas trees or any form of decoration because I don't want to store them or spend the money on them, or put them up then take them down. When I have had Christmas trees in the past, it was more like a Christmas rosemary bush. I had gone to Lowes and saw these pretty sizable rosemary bushes that were all 50 cents because they had frost damage when we had an unexpected cold snap. I cook with a lot of rosemary this time of year so I bought one because it was cheaper than buying it at the grocery store. I decorated it to use as my Christmas tree and I used it to cook with. I wonder how something like that would work into your no-buy because it is technically a plant that you have banned yourself from buying but it is also food. I would say to just decorate your house plants like I did my rosemary bush. Real Christmas trees are kind of a waste unless you have the ability to use them as fire wood after the holidays. Fake Christmas trees require being stored somewhere for the majority of the year and I am so against storing something that big for the vast majority of the year. I have a pretty huge house that we bought as an investment property so we have three spare bedrooms and an extra living room and I just leave them empty except for the guest room which is furnished. Even if I have the extra space, I still can't bring myself to store anything that I don't use frequently. The only things I do store is my tent and my raft and because I am slightly crazy, I told my husband that we must use them each at least five times a year or we should get rid of them. The rule seems kind of extreme, but it does force us to actually go out to the river and camp out for the weekend instead of staying at home watching RUclips and playing video games.
Our house is very festive even without the tree! I agree about storing things. I hate having things in storage that I rarely use. Sending you a big hug! I so appreciate your support and comments on my channel
I love the Christmas cactus!! One year I was really sick for the month of December and just couldn’t bare the thought of dragging all of the decorations out of storage. So my two kiddos and I decorated all of my houseplants with tiny bulbs, ornaments and lights! While the kiddos were overall less than enthusiastic, I thought it was a really fun memory. I love that you are making what you have work for you. Also, I love that you are already starting to process and plan for an influx of products for next year. You are so incredibly engaged in the process. You are #goals!!🤟🏻💕
Wow, I didn't realize that your no-buy year applied to ALL consumer goods! I am so impressed with your resolve. You've truly inspired me and helped me to curb a minor shopping habit (but I must admit I'm lusting after the ABH Sultry palette) and I find that I'm just deleting notifications about hauls from all my YT subscriptions, deleting all Ulta and Sephora ads. All of the makeup organizing and de-cluttering videos cause me such anxiety- I can't for the life of me understand how/why anyone would have so much makeup; I mentally calculate the dollar value of all of it and it boggles my mind.
would you consider doing a video about hooded eyes? I have very similar eyes to you and I've found my makeup has improved so much once I started to figure out how to work with hooded eyes. That being said Im always wanting more tricks and a lot of people who do videos on hooded eyes dont actually have hooded eyes. Would love to see how you work with them!
Ok first of all: How on earth did I miss your Disneyland vlog back in June?! Just watched it and that looks so fun! I am going to be visiting L.A. toward the end of January, and you might have inspired me to go there. (I went to Disneyland once, but it was 20 years ago and I'm sure a lot has changed!) And second of all: Your Christmas cactus!!!
I love your vids, I am on a make-up no buy from November 27th, and a general no buy from 1st January 2019. I am really struggling today with the re-release of the ABH Amrezy Highlighter which I desperately want but will not be buying, so am watching the emergency Black Friday vid you did on endless repeat. Thank you for your help with breaking this habit. p.s. I prefer Charles Prickly III decorated than a Christmas tree in the background, he has more presence and is stoically keeping us on the straight and narrow 😍xx
I am so glad to hear there is someone else who has a houseplant problem. Well, glad and sad simultaneously. I have just started a replacement-only no buy and houseplants are 100% on it. My cat decided to push a plant off the table so there I was, buying a new pot for my plant, on day one of my no buy! Lol
I want to start a no buy and a healthy eating initiative (as I call it) and I have been wondering about that transfer of addiction. I wonder if I will have the will power to maintain both or what might take their place.
I'm wondering the same thing. I have a shopping addiction and a serious sugar problem. I started my year long no-buy on Nov. 24, 10 days in! However, I've noticed I've been treating myself to a Starbucks ice tea/ lemonade or a pumpkin muffin almost every day! This is a new development that I can only attribute to the no-buy. Not sure how I'm gonna deal with it, but it certainly can't continue all year 😯
Elizabeth 2018 have you tried putting fruit (I recommend citrus fruits or frozen berries) into a bottle of water or tea? (I recommend water though as a lot of teas- especially fruit teas- contain excessive amounts of sugar)
I Love your channel, my 3 month No-Buy started Nov 1 and I did great until Nov 21, I broke and spent $61.80 between Nov 29. So I am starting over Dec 1. I went to get my eyebrows done and caved. I guess I will just have to have bushy eyebrows. You inspire me.
I love a bushy brow :) But also, if you get your brows done regularly, I'd consider writing it into your rules as something you are allowed to do. I'm allowed to get massages on my no-buy, for example; experiences and services are allowed, but buying stuff is not.
I applaud you for sticking to your no buy. I would like to know the eye shadow that is on you eyes today....I have older shadows but I love your colors today.
Charles Prickley III saves the day! One more no buy month to go... This is a huge accomplishment! I think it would be really interesting in December or the beginning of January if you did some sort of No Buy New Year check in video where your subscribers can all declare their personal low or no buy commitment and rules together in one place. I think you have affected more people than you realize. I am really interested to see what your new year will bring due to coming out of the no buy. It is wonderful that you can recognize the change in your thought process and shopping behavior!
Love the Christmas cactus :). When I was younger we didn't have a lot of money or space for a tree, so my mother would put together and full-out decorate all our house plants, as if they were a giant Christmas tree. It was different, and it was ok. As adults, my sister and I are not into "regular" traditions, and this is still something we do in each of our homes :)This is our tradition now!
This video truly resonated with me. Especially when you made the comment on how addictive behaviors manifest into other areas. That’s what shopping became for me when I stopped alcohol. Now I am navigating through my shopping behavior and cut back tremendously thus far this year. I wanted to ask if you have a template on how you track your behaviors, commitment to your new behaviors, and safety tools to help you cope through lull periods?
I feel you on the transferring situation... I tried to ban myself from drinking boba tea, and I drank lots of cups of super sweet Strarbucks coffee instead :(
Wow, you're already in Christmas mood, you've even decorated your cactus 😝 I'm so curious of your next year content and ideas. Will you have a new intro? 😉
At the risk of encouraging the disruption of the entire Christmas tree industry, I am SO in favour of Christmas cacti / Christmas succulents / Christmas rubber plants: i.e. promoting an existing plant to the role of Annual Festive Greenery, perhaps even on a rotational basis. I sort of hope you always have a Christmas cactus henceforth, or at least while you're in LA - it makes sense in my bones :D
I will say apartment living is motivation to keep a collection “manageable” (loosely using that) I have a cabinet and a small space on my desk. If I can’t keep it there, I don’t need it.
That is so real for me, too. The amount of space I have is seriously dictating how much stuff I want. I don't want to overstuff my space or buy storage systems, more shelving, etc.
Girl we moved across Washington state 2 years ago and haven't put up a tree since, this will be third year without. I still bust out the more winter themed stuff and lights etc. It's been great. Downright liberating lol. Still festive. (I'm borderline grinch though.)
Here's an idea. What if you try to limit PR to stuff you'd actually buy yourself? For example, if you've already found your favorite moisturizer, and it's a price you're fine with right now, why accept more to try out? Maybe though if you're looking for the perfect primer, and you would pay to try one out, you can accept it through PR, and essentially save yourself a few bucks and maybe the wait time until you run out of the one you're unhappy with. Also, should you accept things that you really didn't even think you needed or things you didn't even really know about? I feel like I am content with what I have until I learn (through RUclips usually) about something new and suddenly I "need" it (*wink*). Food for thought...thanks for being so inspiring. I look forward to your videos all the time.
When you declutter your other stuff (clothes, books, kitchen stuff, etc) will you film it? :) Especially the books. Looking to see what's in your hall of fame vs what's only a one-time-read. Oh and now that November is completely over, I also finished a no-buy November! Didn't even shop online. I thought Deciem's sale was going to break me, but it didn't. You got me through that one. Love you and your videos. I hope you have an amazing month, Hannah!
I’m giving out my own 2018 Favorite RUclipsrs Awards to say thank you. I spend HOURS a day watching or listening to YT while I go about my life (2 hour commute, cooking, cleaning, getting ready for work, etc). I subscribe to over a 100 people...but there’s only 5 that I watch every...single...video. THANK YOU. “My gateway RUclipsr and still going strong” Award - Mr Kong’s Mom “Most inspirational channel” Award - Hannah Louise Poston “Best skincare advice” Award - Penn Smith (Dr Dray and Dr Lim are also great but I enjoy Penn’s down to earth style) “Can watch for hours and never get bored” Award - Tammy’s Ageless Beauty “Feels like we could be BFFs in real life” Award - WannaMakeup You are all special ladies and I’m blessed to have you in my YT life.
I live in Arizona and plenty of people decorate their cactus for this time of year and your little guy would fit right in. Don't beat yourself up too much regarding slipping. It sounds like the last two months have been really intense with work and being sick.
We do have a couple small artificial Christmas trees in storage but a few years now we've just been hanging up lights and burning candles, which are the parts I like the most about this dark, cold but cozy and festive part of the year. Curious to hear your thoughts. About sugar - I find myself drawn to sweets less because I'm lactose intolerant. For the past four years I've been learning from experience and in this last year, I'm really coming to terms with it. I don't like ice cream any more. It's the worst offender for my stomach. Not even tempted, not even when it's hot, because I physically associate it with unpleasant sensations. I'd rather blend some frozen fruit and juice. I have to take my pills if I want to eat a dessert with lots of cream or a cheesecake so I only do it on special occasions. I've gotten used to black coffee even though I work where I could steam my own lactose free milk. Cookies and other pastries sometimes leave a bad aftertaste so I'm left with chocolates that I have to be careful with since too much of that makes me sick and could potentially cause allergies. Instead, my brain has settled on junk food. Big plus of that is that I'd have to go much further to get said junk food than just going into a local shop and picking up pre-packaged pastries or sweets. Lately even the bite of chocolate with coffee is starting to feel weird. I still do it but I think I'm close to actually eliminating that. I'm hoping this continues because it would be the best, to naturally stop wanting sweets as much.
Hannah, I'm feeling a lot of the same sentiments as you. something else I've been really thinking of is stuff like value is terms other than money. for example, I really want the Kevyn aucoin sculpting powder, but its $44. thats a concert for a bigger artist, or two smaller concerts. thats almost a whole tank of gas. that's groceries for the month. when I think about it like that, it makes me really not want to spend my money on something as trivial as makeup, which has started to become a fading hobby anyways
If you're worried about your collection growing too much from gifts/pr you keep, maybe consider a quarterly declutter. That way you can enjoy what you keep with the knowledge that there is something keeping your collection in check.
Hannah, have you considered the possibility that the model of willpower you apply so productively to consumerism might not entirely translate to other kinds of consumption? I'm thinking about the differences between shopping and food-I always have to skip your segments about food because of my history of eating disorders. I'm not telling you that your approach is necessarily disordered-I just trust your thoughtfulness about theoretical understandings of desire, appetite, etc. and their practical applications enough to want to ask you if you've considered the issue.
I do think there are some differences, but for me the "treat" mentality or the indulgence mentality is so strong across all categories that it helps a lot to apply them to each other, if that makes sense. I actually do think that in my life it can be considered one big issues. But I can totally understand how my struggle with consumerism wouldn't translate to someone else's experience with food. I appreciate the feedback, I'll try to mention this in a future video!
I'm glad I'm not the only compulsive house plant buyer out there. Honestly I had to ban myself from buying plants of all things 😒 now I'm propagating all my existing plants to get more 😥
I don’t know if you’ve talked about this video idea but maybe you could do a summary of how much money you think you didn’t spend when being conscious about your spending!
You know, this is something that I'm not great at- sticking to my rules! I feel like doing so promotes a sort of necessary discipline. It's like, once you make one exception.. you're more likely to make more exceptions, ones that might not even have been ones that you wouldve written into your rules as exceptions has you thought of them.
ALSO omg! I want to do this for 2019. You inspired me so much. I could be so much better at focusing on what I already have and I feel like over the past year I have really narrowed on things I allow myself to purchase. But I think a no-buy goes much deeper, to allow myself to stop engaging in those shopping behaviors as you put it.
As a viewer, I am also concerned about how accepting PR might change this channel. It would be interesting to know what the intention is behind the decision to accept PR is.
Hannah has said several times that one of the things she was most excited about doing on her channel are product reviews. Given that she is on a no-buy and transitioning to a low/thoughtful buy, continuing to not accept PR would be to stymy her opportunity to continue to review new products. I think it would be pushy and self serving of us to demand (or even request) she not accept PR because we like her content. The main message of her channel will continue , she’s not suddenly going to become a hyper-consumer haul channel. She has been so rigid and firm and SUCCESSFUL in every rule and parameter she has set for herself thus far, so I’m sure we can trust that even when she accepts PR, the message will remain the same. I say, get it girl! Get all the PR, purge every bit that doesn’t bring you joy, and celebrate the success that has allowed the offers of goodies into your life!
@@Puglover130 Actually, if you'd given your statement a bit more thought, you'd realize how wasteful this kind of attitude is ("Get all the PR, purge every bit that doesn’t bring you joy, and celebrate the success that has allowed the offers of goodies into your life!") You have probably no idea how much waste is generated just by PR packages (let alone how bad all that shipping around stuff is). I am talking of influencers actually having to hire people to sort through their empty packages because companies are trying to outdo each other at impressive packaging (and even include electronic waste like screens to play videos promoting the stuff inside). And even if the stuff she (or any influencer) purges doesn't get thrown away but handed down to other people, you're swamping them with stuff eventually, too, and they end up with much more than they need or even want in their lives (speaking out of experience here)... which means there is tons of stuff no one gets any use out of. I honestly have to say that I'd also be disappointed if Hannah started to accept PR. I am not really interested in any review content - that's not what makes her channel unique - but I found her journey and experience along the way interesting. I'd much rather hear about what makes her buy certain stuff with her own money now that her attitude has changed than get regular reviews of random stuff companies send her. I'd enjoy content about things and experiences that bring her genuine joy (books, to name just one example). Given what Hannah has told us about how the no-buy changed her view and attitude, I think she'd have to twist into a really ornate shape to justify receiving PR. I'd really be interested in that line of argument. I understand that it's difficult to grow a channel that has an expiration date by definition (no-buy year), but if that's how it's going to continue, I will sadly have to unsubscribe.
I know people are concerned about this. I'll be going about it tentatively and in a thoughtful way (and also, no big companies are banging down the door to send me PR, if you know what I mean!). Also, if it gets out of hand, I'll just stop accepting it. As I said in this video, I'm going to make a whole video about this decision next month, so everyone can be on the same page. Thanks for the support, Tara--you are right, there is no need to fear that I will become a hyper-consumerist haul channel!
Grid X yes I’m aware that it has become our of control for some bigger YYers, and watched Samantha’s video. I’m actually a low waster and that much packaging makes me cringe. I also agree that reviews are not why people are subscribed to Hannah.. it’s almost the opposite- a refuge , a safe place from all the haul/review/consumerist channels. However don’t you think Hannah already knows this? She knows her audience. I still think it’s incredibly pushy and selfish to try to strongarm and guilt someone into doing what you want ( ie practically calling her a hypocrite, reminding that’s not the core of her channel, and you’ll be disappointed and unsub) ughhh. Also with all due respect to Hannah, she’s not suddenly going to be swamped with hundreds of packages from companies banging down the door. And even when she grows to that point... I think a SELECTIVE PR acceptance would mitigate 80+% of the excess. The YTers who talked about all the excess mentioned about 80% is trash. Not even in the category of good to give away. Just pure trash from small crap companies dying for you to review something on your channel so you can get the free press. I don’t see how you couldn’t weed out MOST of the crap by having a PR requests email instead of broadly accepting all PR. That way you could stop a large majority of stuff from being sent in the first place. All that said I think people are forgetting Hannah is also a person, a makeup lover who is curious, likes to try new things and enjoys reviewing (even if it’s not your favourite content). I don’t get how it can’t be like other YTers - they have certain videos that may not interest us- newsflash, you have the power to not watch that video. It doesn’t have to be an all or nothing, do as I say or I boycott.
With regards to the PR thing, I feel like brands who pick you to send things will sort take advantage of your no-buy habits, as in: “this is something even someone who doesn’t shop a lot, likes”.
You should do a Ted talk girl. It is more than just makeup. It is so much work keeping up with every day of new releases. I am addict. I have been a my life. I transferred it from my drug of choice to makeup, furniture, TV, coffee makers, clothes, etc. My drug of choice was shopping. I was addicted this past year on getting Fenty products and I felt like I needed everything. We just consolidated our credit cards to pay everything off. Then I maxed out our credit card because I felt like I needed. I would try it and not like it. I made V.I.B at sephora this year and in Sept 2018 i was $150 away from V.I.B rouge. That was a wakeup call. I spent $850 on makeup. Wow. I am a good candidate for a no buy lifestyle. I love your videos. Thank you. 💖💖💖💖
I have the hourglass edit from last year and I like it. But the edit 4 is more cool toned which matches my skin tone better but I just can’t justify 80 bucks for basically the same thing I have. It works and looks good but I’m very tempted. I know I don’t need it and I don’t use my other one enough to make it a necessary purchase. I think when you do start to get PR/buy stuff you should put it in a box and after your family and friends go through it donate what you can to local shelters but also local colleges or places where women without expendable income can look through it. I also read a comment where you can send mascara wands to animal rescue projects because they use it to clean oil off birds. Maybe find alternative places and share with us! I have a box of things I no longer use for various reasons and my friends are tapped out so I’d love to send it to someone in need or in more need than me.
Great video as always! Do you think this change in thinking has affected your love language of gift giving and receiving? Also, I think that your channel has really been impacting me recently, I made a several large Sephora and ultra orders in preparation for a 2019 year no buy. I am also going to be traveling to Thailand for 2 weeks and wanted to get some travel size appropriate makeup and and skincare items. I received some of the items in the mail yesterday and I had the stark realization that I just wasn't as excited as I previously would have been. I looked around at all the items before me and had a harsh realization that these are just things. I have been obsessing over objects. Its such a strange realization. I have truly realized that I don't derive joy out of it anymore. I did not expect to feel this way, yet I did. I even happened to discover a holy grail base product and yet it was still just a THING. It no longer has that affect on me. Interestingly enough I found myself feeling sad at the loss of feeling that immense joy I normally would have felt, yet simultaneously feel grateful that it no longer has such a hold over me. It no longer affects my joy. This is all from just watching your channel and really taking into account what you share. I cannot wait to see even more change in my attitude during my no buy year in 2019. I want you to know that you have truly made a positive difference in my life and I'm sure in many others. Thank you for all that you do!! Thank you for your long videos and insightful thoughts!!
Argh! I just had a not so awesome experience while bring in magasin (huge store with a small shop-in-ship Sephora and Half a floor full of makeup and beauty)... I went in to buy a gift on behalf of my boyfriend for his sister, and I figured I had some time to spare so I looked around (completely for amusement, still on a no-buy, and I didn't break it).. At one point I noticed that I felt really comfy and that i wanted to buy quite a Lot of things (though all were in my wish-list at some point).. I'm slightly worried because of it - not so much wanting stuff, but the really Deep realization that felt in a bad mood when i left even though, or maybe, BECAUSE I didn't buy anything... I have No idea what to do with the uncertainty about that feeling of "bad-ness" when I don't buy the things I want... It also really started to sink in, how much money i have saved this year just by not buying makeup; her i still want to😱😅
I'm so sorry this was a struggle, but it sounds like you are paying attention to your feelings and actions and that is what matters! It is hard to make change, you are getting there :)
@@HannahLouisePoston thanks for answering👍 the support alone helps😊 My boyfriend tries to help but he doesn't seem to understand it particularly well 😅
When you said “illegal Argentinian drugs” I thought.... OMG. I always wanted to be an international drug dealer. Kidding. Kidding. Colds have kicked my booty this year too and I’m so normally not like this. It’s been bizarre. However, those magical orange pills make it a bit better. I’ve been doing smashingly on my Whole30 (Day 12) and I’m really starting to feel all the no dairy, no sugar and no gluten affects. My hair and skin is so much healthier, no bloat, better energy. Reminds me of why I need to move back to paleo. I have been indulging a little more in coffee than usual the last two weeks, so I’m working on getting that in check. The only thing I really am craving/missing is hot chocolate with how cold NorCal is right now. I’m proud of you for making due with the Christmas tree. I live on a Christmas tree farm, literally, and I wish I could send you one of our babies, but I don’t think it would ship well. Oh and your Christmas cactus has so much character. Love it. November was an easy no buy month for me. Though to be honest, I started Christmas shopping in the last few days and I could see the flood gates opening. So I’m going to stop for now even though I have more to go and do NO MORE of it online. Online shopping removes the friction and that’s bad for my no-buy. I’m in month 4 and I’m finding in general the no buy is “starting to settle”. I just have to keep the Christmas shopping in check. I recently rewatched your September check in because I was having some of those feelings about life. That check in is pure poetry I tell you. Thanks for your real ness XOXOX
Hannah Louise Poston my friend told me she doesn’t have a tree because she doesn’t have the space to store it when they aren’t using it... so why try to fit yourself into a box and predetermined traditions when you can just make your own or be happy with what you have
CHRISTMAS CACTUS!
:)
It's going to be hard to remember next year. xoxo!
For a Christmas gift for us would you please consider posting you and Joe performing a tango in one of your creations?
swisslions yes this!!!
I don't think Joe and I will be performing any time soon, but you can find some videos of me by searching "hannah poston tango" on youtube :)
That cactus sounds like it has a better life than I do
LOL!
Maria Vazquez 🤣🤣🤣
I LOVE your Christmas cactus! That is totally the kind of cheeky nod to a Christmas tree I have in my home each year. So much more character than a store bought tree that looks like everybody else’s
:)
Charles the no buy Christmas Tree is adorable. 🎍🌵🎄
thanks, Donna!
Donna Simo gguu
Hey! A book Christmas tree would be a bomb idea 😍
love it!
I think you’re One of the only no buy people on RUclips that actually doesn’t Break their rules within three weeks!
LOL!
I just found your channel a couple weeks ago and I'm upset I haven't been here since the beginning of the year! Next year I'm planning on doing a low-buy as a baby step to stepping back from consumerism game. I'm so happy I found you!
Thanks, Natasha!
9 minutes of "blather" you slay me! I still love watching you chat about stuff, because I find your voice really relaxing - that might sound weird but I do! I am living for the Christmas Cactus too - improvisation at its finest!
:)
Thank you
Similar thoughts here...I have been trying a low-buy for 2018, and Hannah's videos have been so motivating to push me to do a no-buy for 2019.
so true about the transference of addiction, I keep putting so much will power on one aspect only to fall somewhere else, which makes me dig deeper....I love how articulate you are about your inner processes
I think also having that 25 a month going to the side will teach me to look for possibly more affordable options for categories that I have to repurchase consistently!
thank you for sharing this with me! xo!
Also I am constantly amazing by how good your eyeshadow and hair always looks.
thanks, Lucia! xoxo!
You are a beautiful person inside and out and light in this massive RUclips world
I would love to meet you too, Faith! I hope it will work out someday! Thank you for this sweet comment
Hannah Louise Poston I hope so too 😊
I often crave sweets when I am not being kind/sweet enough to myself and loved ones- the body craves physical and emotional sweetness it sounds silly but sometimes it does help to have a minimal sweet treat and give yourself a moment of self love or a little hug💗💗💗great video!
I've never heard this, it's beautiful!
I love crafting and I love the results so much, they show all the love that was put into the work!
lovely idea!
The Christmas Cactus is the cutest thing ever! You inspire me so much! 😊💖
:)
Hannah,
I’ve only followed your journey for a few months, but I thoroughly enjoy listening to you. The way you speak about your behaviors and the way they’ve changed is refreshing. 🥳 (
Hi Reese, thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comment! xoxo!
I'm so glad to hear that, Hilary! xo!
If you had a live Christmas tree last year, then isn’t getting a Christmas tree right now a replacement 🤔
But I admire you being faithful to your rules, and the cactus is adorable 😍
:)
I love hearing your reflections, Hannah! Its been such a help in my own journey/struggles with consumerism :)
thank you, Amelea!
I’ve just discovered your channel and you have really inspired me. I’m going to give serious thought to my no buy list. I have been cleaning out my house and only want to keep what I need and love.
I'm so glad you are inspired, Wanda! Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much! xoxo!
Omg I never really think about you being an influencer but I’ve actually bought at least 3 products because of you (during my replacement only no buy). This means you are actually the most effective influencer in my life that I don’t know personally.
I never really think of myself as being an influence, either! I'm starting to try to be more careful about it.
I am happy with the purchases though! My acne-prone skin is 1000x smoother since getting the Mario Badescu Glycolic Cleanser
My no buy is going well. My empties video and update is this weekend. Thank you for talking this out.
I always think that experiences are some of the best gifts! Instead of asking for "stuff" you could ask friends and family for concert tickets or experience-type things like golf lessons
yes, experiences make great gifts!
Charles Prickly is the cutest! Looking all festive!
Addiction transference is so real. It's a constant battle.
so real!
Ah.. and I like your Christmas cactus btw. It's cute and creative!!
thanks!
Funny I’m prefilming to visit my family in North Carolina for Christmas as well 😂
I’m excited to see all your wrap up/reflection videos in December 😊
Aw, awesome! Where does your family live? Mine is in the mountains!
Hannah Louise Poston Mine is near Fort Bragg. My brother in law and sister are both military. 😊
Christmas Cactus 🌵 😂 You’re the best Hannah!!
:)
Transference of addiction is an interesting topic, I’m really interested in hearing your houghts on it in the future!
it's ever-evolving!
I just had to pause the video to come here and say that I'm so obsessed with your eye makeup. 😍
thank you!
Would you be able to do an eye makeup tutorial for hooded eyes? It would be much appreciated!
I'll try to film more, but you can also check out my past demos!
Excellent point of addiction transference! It can be an involuntary reaction unless you realize what your weaknesses are.
it's hard!
Sultry looks really pretty to me, too, but the desire has faded already! Thanks, Kim!
would you consider doing a video about hooded eyes? I have very similar eyes to you and I've found my makeup has improved so much once I started to figure out how to work with hooded eyes. That being said Im always wanting more tricks and a lot of people who do videos on hooded eyes dont actually have hooded eyes. Would love to see how you work with them!
I'll try to film another demo soon, but all of my past makeup demos show how I work with them!
I love the Christmas Cactus! I felt super unobservant once you pulled him from the back!
:)
Ok first of all: How on earth did I miss your Disneyland vlog back in June?! Just watched it and that looks so fun! I am going to be visiting L.A. toward the end of January, and you might have inspired me to go there. (I went to Disneyland once, but it was 20 years ago and I'm sure a lot has changed!)
And second of all: Your Christmas cactus!!!
I recommend Disneyland! It was so fun!
My family has a Christmas yucca this year! 🎄 non traditional holidays are the best 😊
yay!
CHRISTMAS CACTUS 😍🌵🌵🌵 what a quirky idea!! 😆
:)
Technically a new Christmas tree would be a replacement for your old ones?!
:)
You are very inspirational. I really like watching your videos and listening to your ideas.
thanks, Diana!
Thank you for your help with breaking this habit. p.s. I prefer Charles Prickly III decorated than a Christmas tree in the background, he has more presence and is stoically keeping us on the straight and narrow 😍xx
yay, congratulations on sticking to your no-buy!
Also love love love the Christmas cactus!! 🌵🌟
:)
Lol
ahh! the cat knew :)
@@HannahLouisePoston she definitely did! That and I think she enjoys pushing things off surfaces so she gets to watch me clean up/suffer!
I want to start a no buy and a healthy eating initiative (as I call it) and I have been wondering about that transfer of addiction. I wonder if I will have the will power to maintain both or what might take their place.
it's hard! I think making super clear rules that are good but not too strict/unrealistic is the key.
I haven't, but I will now! I've reduced the Starbucks visits to once a week, but still, I'd like it to be down to 0 times a week lol.
I would like to know the eye shadow that is on you eyes today....I have older shadows but I love your colors today.
it's just a shimmery white/cream with some blacks and browns in the outer corner! Very simple. I think the shimmer was a tarte chrome paint.
Good idea, Lisa! I'll try to find a way to fit in a place for people to talk about 2019. Thank you for all of your support!
Love the Christmas cactus :). When I was younger we didn't have a lot of money or space for a tree, so my mother would put together and full-out decorate all our house plants, as if they were a giant Christmas tree. It was different, and it was ok. As adults, my sister and I are not into "regular" traditions, and this is still something we do in each of our homes :)This is our tradition now!
love this!
This video truly resonated with me. Especially when you made the comment on how addictive behaviors manifest into other areas. That’s what shopping became for me when I stopped alcohol. Now I am navigating through my shopping behavior and cut back tremendously thus far this year. I wanted to ask if you have a template on how you track your behaviors, commitment to your new behaviors, and safety tools to help you cope through lull periods?
you might enjoy my videos "should you do a no-buy year" and "how to do a no-buy year!"
you've done an awesome job with your no-buy year. congrats.
thanks, Kristina!
I feel you on the transferring situation... I tried to ban myself from drinking boba tea, and I drank lots of cups of super sweet Strarbucks coffee instead :(
It's hard to find a tea drink or tea latte that isn't sweetened! I've mostly just been making my own at home for the past few months.
@@HannahLouisePoston That's what I'm planning to do this month..Fingers crossed!!
Wow, you're already in Christmas mood, you've even decorated your cactus 😝
I'm so curious of your next year content and ideas. Will you have a new intro? 😉
stay tuned! it won't be too different :)
Where is that beautiful piece of knitwear from?😍
it's by the brand ATM. I think it was $$$...a friend with a very good job gave it to me after she decluttered her closet :)
Hannah Louise Poston I have a small channel. I’m working on a yearlong idea 💡 I think it would interest you. If you’d be open to a collaboration?
why don't you send me an email to mynobuyyear@gmail.com
Hannah Louise Poston sent!
When I was studying for the bar exam, I never shopped!! I was so crazy busy.
yes, a full life helps!
Girl we moved across Washington state 2 years ago and haven't put up a tree since, this will be third year without. I still bust out the more winter themed stuff and lights etc. It's been great. Downright liberating lol. Still festive. (I'm borderline grinch though.)
Not a grinch really, just anti consumerism and anti lying to children with pointless ridiculousness and I don't have any religious affiliations. 😉
I love lights! And I can get kind of grinchy about the overconsumerism of xmas, really :)
I will definitely be limiting PR to things I actually want to own!
I hope you have an amazing month, Hannah!
yes, I'm going to try to film it! Congratulations on you November!!!!
THANK YOU.
“My gateway RUclipsr and still going strong” Award - Mr Kong’s Mom
“Most inspirational channel” Award - Hannah Louise Poston
“Best skincare advice” Award - Penn Smith (Dr Dray and Dr Lim are also great but I enjoy Penn’s down to earth style)
“Can watch for hours and never get bored” Award - Tammy’s Ageless Beauty
“Feels like we could be BFFs in real life” Award - WannaMakeup
You are all special ladies and I’m blessed to have you in my YT life.
oh my gosh, this is SO cute. Thank you for the award!
Small random thought: every single time you say ‘gird my loins’, all I hear is Stanley Tucci in Devil Wears Prada.
I live in Arizona and plenty of people decorate their cactus for this time of year and your little guy would fit right in. Don't beat yourself up too much regarding slipping. It sounds like the last two months have been really intense with work and being sick.
thank you
We do have a couple small artificial Christmas trees in storage but a few years now we've just been hanging up lights and burning candles, which are the parts I like the most about this dark, cold but cozy and festive part of the year.
I find that the less I eat sweets, the more that natural aversion develops! So much of what's available to us is too sweet for our taste buds.
Charles Prickley III is adorable!
Hannah, I'm feeling a lot of the same sentiments as you. something else I've been really thinking of is stuff like value is terms other than money. for example, I really want the Kevyn aucoin sculpting powder, but its $44. thats a concert for a bigger artist, or two smaller concerts. thats almost a whole tank of gas. that's groceries for the month. when I think about it like that, it makes me really not want to spend my money on something as trivial as makeup, which has started to become a fading hobby anyways
it helps so much to think of what else that money could buy.
If you're worried about your collection growing too much from gifts/pr you keep, maybe consider a quarterly declutter. That way you can enjoy what you keep with the knowledge that there is something keeping your collection in check.
I'm sure I'll keep decluttering, and I think "Hannah's reckoning" will also help!
I love watching your vids😍😍
thank you!
omg we are getting so close to the end of the year! i can't believe it's been already a year!
I KNOW!!!!
12:41 - 13:04 Girl that's how I feel about asking guys out.
Hannah this lip situation is stunning on you!
thank you!
Giveaways will be a great way to share the PR gifts :) Also you can be selective with the PR lists you ask to join!
yes, if I end up with anything I don't want I will definitely give it away!
I'm going with you in 2019. Subscribed.
yay, welcome and thank you so much for watching!
Love your Christmas cactus.
:)
Honestly I had to ban myself from buying plants of all things 😒 now I'm propagating all my existing plants to get more 😥
:)
I don’t know if you’ve talked about this video idea but maybe you could do a summary of how much money you think you didn’t spend when being conscious about your spending!
that video is coming soon! keep an eye out! xoxo
Do a meet up in North Carolina !!!
that would be fun, by my family lives way out in the mountains!
Also love the xmas cactus haha
ALSO omg! I want to do this for 2019. You inspired me so much. I could be so much better at focusing on what I already have and I feel like over the past year I have really narrowed on things I allow myself to purchase. But I think a no-buy goes much deeper, to allow myself to stop engaging in those shopping behaviors as you put it.
yes, sticking to your own rules is so empowering once you decide you are going to become a person who does it! I believe in you :)
As a viewer I'd prefer it if you didn't accept PR as I do not come to you for reviews on the latest and greatest but to actually get away from it.
You could join a "no buy" group on FB for your neighborhood and ask for one. The one I'm in is called Buy Nothing Valencia, Santa Clarita.
nice!
"the baby in my brain is such a jerk"...hahhhahah! so funny! :)
she is though :)
With regards to the PR thing, I feel like brands who pick you to send things will sort take advantage of your no-buy habits, as in: “this is something even someone who doesn’t shop a lot, likes”.
interesting!
Thank you. 💖💖💖💖
you can do it! awareness is everything! xoxo!
I'll definitely find good homes for things I'm not keeping!
I think it makes sense to grieve for the way new things used to make us feel. But evolving will always bring new joys!
Cute substitution xmas tree!
:)
@@HannahLouisePoston thanks for answering👍 the support alone helps😊
My boyfriend tries to help but he doesn't seem to understand it particularly well 😅
How are you reasoning about gifts? :)
gifts have been excluded from my no-buy since the beginning of the year. I am allowed to give and receive them.
You could make a tree out of the lights
true!
"The baby in my brain is such a jerk" oh my god Hannah i luv you😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
:)
Love the cactus 😀👉💚
Thanks for your real ness XOXOX
you live on a christmas tree farm??!?!?!? that is amazing. thank you for trafficking illegal drugs for me. I'm glad your Whole30 is going so well!
Laughing at Xmas cactus. If I had a surviving plant, I would do the same.
:)
Can we tweet joe... like hint hint nudge nudge 😂😂😂 I’m so happy you are staying strong.. the holidays are what you make it 💚
yes, it's fine with me! I'm happy with little charles prickly :)
Hannah Louise Poston my friend told me she doesn’t have a tree because she doesn’t have the space to store it when they aren’t using it... so why try to fit yourself into a box and predetermined traditions when you can just make your own or be happy with what you have
